    Rich, easy delivery and so resonant. That Pavarotti tone is just utterly hypnotic.

    I saw and heard Maestro Pavarotti in Tosca at the Metropolitan Opera in NYC back in 1991 or so. I will always remember hearing that voice and not believing that he could really sing like that. It was incredible. We were so spoiled back then but we didn’t realize it like most spoiled people until he was gone, I saw and heard Placido Domingo do La Boheme as well in the mid 1990s but Luciano was in a class of his own.i cannot help to leave at least a bit disappointed when I attend an opera that features a male tenor since then.

    Incredible recording. My goodness, the quality of the voice at his age is beyond words. His voice and its overtones project effortlessly. Indeed, Pavarotti had amazing projection of sound. A small sound could expand and carry so well.

    He, Sutherland, Callas, and Simionato are the four best voices I've ever heard. Simionato had the best technique of any mezzo, Callas introduced a whole new style of bel canto melodrama, Sutherland took the ball from Callas and created her own kingdom. But Luciano Pavarotti, there is no voice that can equal the focus, power and grandeur of his singing - what I heard him do at The Met so many years ago.

    eh rmm, the acoustics sont pas terrible at the Met, and still he always carried, because he knew his technique. You are right, of course, about the not needing mikes...but I was shocked to see singers miked in the Opera Comique a Paris, not by any means an enormous house, and with the excellent acoustics of the older houses. Ma!! what happened to basic technique?!! interesting, though , that J Thibedo assumed that singers were miked, though...generational assumptions...

    • @js59695
      @js59695 7 лет назад

      gwirgalon there are mics at the met as well... vocal teaching is at an all time low. Talented singers everywhere but with no guidance they don't reach potential.

    • @Will_DiGiorgio
      @Will_DiGiorgio 5 лет назад +1

      @@js59695 The oprea at the Met isn't mic'd, the Met has very odd acoustics, you have to decide if you want good seats and OK sound or cheap seats and incredible sound... Personally I think Domingos voice carries better at the Met then Pavarotti. However, I suspect this performance is late 90s when the maestros voice wasn't what it once was. I saw Pavarotti in concert in 94 in an arena, and Tosca at the Met in 98. The vocal decline in 4 years was very noticeable. Don't get me wrong Pavarotti on an off day is a thousand times better than Flores at his best.
      I recently saw Domingo on his opening of Luisa Miller, I sat in an overhang in the Parterre, Domingo was the baritone, Beczala was the tenor and Yoncheva was the soprano thankfully Miller is a heavy baritone oprea. The overhang had a slight muffle, Yoncheva was beautiful and came through well, Domingo was incredible and that's my unbiased opinion. He was as powerful as I've ever heard him and the richness of his voice peirced the house... Baczala was awful, his voice isn't big enough for the Met and really Yoncheva and Domingo carried the opera. Baczala has an awful over covered voice. There was a mezzo soprano making her debut that night and she also had a fantastic voice. The Met is a big house and at 78 Domingo is still impressive and can boom at the Met with ease. Please don't take this the wrong way, Luciano Pavarotti was and always will be my favorite operatic tenor but he should have retired long before he did by the time I saw him sing Tosca he was well past his prime.
      I don't know what they're teaching the new Tenors today but they all seem to be overly cautious with their voices and won't open up. They all seem to have an unpleasant nasal sound and want to keep the throat overly covered, and I know that's considered a more elegant and proper sound however if you listen to Pavarotti singing Nessun Dorma most of it was uncovered, he knew when to take a chance , he knew what his voice could do, and he knew when to uncover and let that beautiful instrument play. It's almost as if they are taking it to the extreme. People talk about Juan Diego Florez and his high C's in La fille du régiment and he sounds like he's singing them through his nose. They all sound very forced. A tenor should sound like a relaxed breath of air in the legato, and to me they sound like they are behind a toy boat trying to blow wind in the sail. (that's the best metaphor I could think of) Sorry I didn't mean for this to ramble , this is just my amateur opinion. I doubt I'll see the next Pavarotti or Domingo in my lifetime. I'm thankful just for the few opportunities I've had to see them in opera and concert.

    I'm afraid I cannot say that I admire the performance artistically but thank you so much for uploading nevertheless! We get to see the Master just how those sitting in the audience did.
