    Great review! I own the a7III, a7RIII, a7SIII, and the a1, and seeing the features in this new camera, I can tell you that people are going to absolutely flock to this as it checks almost all the right boxes for professionals as well. I may sell my a7III and a7RIII eventually and use these as run and gun cameras for weddings especially. The a1 is the best camera I never want to put down, but I have no doubt new owners of the a7IV are going to feel right at home with it.

    I really enjoyed that video! I liked how you started with a film first, to let us see the practical application of the camera before delving into the specs and capabilities. It was refreshing! One question I was curious about. Some reviewers said that shutter mechanism was a little louder than the other modern Sony bodies. Would you say the mechanical shutter is about the same as the A7sIII, or a bit a louder? Also some mentioned that it's actually got a slightly chunkier grip than the A7sIII. Is that true? I assumed it was the same size as the A7rIV, A7sIII, A9 II, A1, etc in the current body design. Was just curious. Thanks!

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  2 года назад +2

      Thanks so much! I’m glad you liked the format!
      The shutter seems to be about even with my Fx3 (which I believe is the same as the a7siii) if I remember correctly, the A1 had a super quiet shutter but this one is still reasonably quiet too. The grip and body are nearly identical to the a7siii from what I can tell.

    Many people are complaining about 5fps when shooting uncompressed raw. It would be good to cover the topic of shooting uncompressed raw / lossless compressed (~5-6fps) vs lossy compressed (~8-10fps depending on card used). I'm inclined to shoot uncompressed raw but file sizes might scare me enough to use lossy :)

    So far you're the only one who mentioned who mentioned the APS-C mode and the number of megapixels we get, which is a very important thing IMHO.
    Would be great to have a comparison with A7r3... it's 12mpix more and I'm wondering if it's worth buying now over the a7m4.

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  2 года назад

      At this point, I'd say this is a better camera to buy than the a7r3. The features and processing it can do are much better and the MP count is only really a small piece of the pie.

    Great video! I'm thinkng about joining team Sony. I mostly shoot talking head footage in 4k 30. I am debating between the a7IV and Cannon (R6?). My only hesitancy is that, side-by-side, the Cannon footage seems to have punchier, more vibrant colors and skin tones out of camera. However, colors look good in this video! Do you think that I can achieve Canon (or better) colors out of camera (without grading)? Thanks again!

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  2 года назад +11

      I think that if you like one better straight out of camera, you should totally go that way. I’m a pretty heavy color grader (this was all shot in SLOG3 and graded by hand) so this definitely doesn’t give you a look at SOOC color. That said, Sony has done a lot to improve their color science lately.

    • @daletidy.
      @daletidy. 2 года назад +5

      Check out videos using S-Cinetone. Thats a solid baked in look that this camera now has. You can also adjust all of the settings for that S-cinetone profile in camera to add more saturation or contrast, so you should be able to get a very great looking image directly out of camera similar or better to Canon depending on your preference

    • @Seitenwerk
      @Seitenwerk 2 года назад +6

      Just a big recommendation: Before jumping ship based on a body, also consider the lenses. Bodies will changes every year but you will be sad when lenses you want or need are not available. Example: Canon has the best lenses on the market and they continue pumping out one amazing lense after another. On the downside those are costly. Unique quality is not cheap (but look at lenses like the RF 28-70 f2!). For Sony on the other hand, you get many third party lenses in mid tear price segment. So if you are more into many options at lower cost the Sony might be interesting. On the other hand the new Canon R system cameras allow you to just adapt to all EF mount lenses so you basically have the same kind of lens market there.
      Anyway I would recommend looking more into lens market then into bodies. If you want the best lenses and f1.2 lenses pull a trigger for you, go Canon. If you want more selection (Tamron, Sigma etc) go Sony.

      @@HopeProphecy be careful of R6 overheating issues! I got about 30-40 minutes of 4K before it overheated. And it could be sort of forced to shoot again after 5mins cooldown, but I only got about 5mins more this way without overheat. Takes 1hr or so to cool down completely again. Just my experience during a rental

    Hi Thanks for video, showing what a7iv can produce, rather than just talking specs, so subscribed. Looks like a pretty darn good camera that's likely to be in short supply for next 6 months or so (chip shortages, world logistic challenges, C-19 and demand pattern in 2018 with earlier a7iii). Anyway I just decided to pre-order one, here in UK. Hopefully get it in Dec, rather than circa June'22 - by waiting to see first production models in dealers, before buying.
    I was impressed that you could do the vid you showed, all from this one camera - I know a lot about still shooting and tech stuff etc. but have much to learn about video production. I'm mostly a stills shooter, but would like to venture into video and this seems the perfect new Sony model to commence that 'convergence' journey towards hybrid shooting.
    I know video devotees rave about a7siii but the small circa 12Mp pixel count made that a bit limiting for a stills user like me. It looked initially (to me) like an a1 was needed, within Sony ecosystem, if one wanted both good stills and good video capability within a single body? Until this popped up - much of a1's basic stuff (bar rolling shutter performance, highest frame rate, 1/400 sync, 8k) at less than half the price?
    One query (forgive my ignorance), but when you say 'forced into crop mode on 4k 60' (for slow-mo I think in hi-res) does the video quality look similar/same as 4k shot in non crop mode as far as detail, colour, quality goes etc? I realise that in crop mode that wide shots are trickier, although a 16-35 GM at 16mm should still, hopefully, look pretty much like a 24mm not in crop.

    I actually think Sony are splitting their mid range into two.
    -> A7C line for video focused hybrid
    -> A7IV for photo focused hybrid.
    I was considering upgrading to this from A7C but I don't know if it's worth it now. I do mostly video so maybe it's worth saving cash away and waiting for the A7C II or if I can, going to the FX3

Also, I've noticed that it only takes like 2mm off of center and the whole thing looks wonky. Its darn near impossible to get perfect. Usually i touch it up in post but i missed it this time! Very entertaining review and amazing footage. I went to Peyto lake in summer a few years ago and it was spectacular. I have to say this part of Canada (the only one I visited) is really magnificient. So many lakes and places, streams, cascades, wildlife. Being French and used to visit the Alps, mountains and valleys in Canada are so much gigantic. Amazing.

    Hehe, that last shot... See one of these days you need to release a video that shows a behind-the-scenes take on how you produce a video such as this. Like, when you first get out of your SUV, I know already you got out of your SUV already from the footprints, had to go and set up your tripod for that shot of you exiting the SUV, go back and sit in your vehicle and then exit AGAIN!
    LOL these videos must have you walking around the same areas three or four times each! set up the camera, do your shot, take down the camera, repeat!

    60p 4k no crop,
    240p 1080p no crop
    less rolling shutter
    (Why the a74 is not capable to do that. It has the a1's processor and a very good censor. What is the problem? I don't know what else is needed to reach the specs I wrote.
    Anyway, I think it is a very good camera, I like it. Canon R6 has recording time limit (and I think it looks too ugly) which is deal breaker for me. Closest rival of the a74 is canon r6

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  2 года назад +1

      I think that if it weren't such a high resolution sensor, it could do that. But downscaling 7K to 4K at 60fps I believe would cause heat issues. I'm speculating a bit but I think thats it. It would have been nice even to see a pixel binned version of 4K60 that would allow for no crop for sure.

    One minor upgrade (which is a big one for post workflow) is the fact that the file naming system doesn't always reset to C001 every time you format a card. This was a major pain on multi camera shoots, and even general project usage/storage with the A7iii.

    *Would a 2017 MacBook Pro be able to process 4k 24fps from the A7IV in Davinci Pro?* I'm looking at buying my first camera (deciding between A7C and A7IV - definitely can't afford the A7s3) for RUclips, Zoom calls and general social media but I want the highest quality possible, and for it to last. I would rather spend more money on my initial investment, and have the quality stand the test of time. I would probably get the 20mm f1.8 G-lens, and 1 studio light (with 1-2 background lights in the short term). The A7C is $2500 AUD and the A7IV is $4000 pre-order + G-lens is $1200.

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  2 года назад +1

      Yes, thats my exact macbook and it works for sure. Once you go heavy on the grading and stuff it can bog down but using half res previews helps a lot. This is a huge step up from the a7c in my opinion. Especially for video.

    Great video and thanks for not just touting stuff from the specsheet like it has Breathing-Compensation... *rolleyes*
    Couple of questions about the Camera:
    1) Everyone raves about the Eye-AF. How does it comapare to ANIMAL-Eye AF / Tracking from the A6400 for Example? It's always a bit "meh" when not shooting Humans from my experience.
    2) How does the Crop on Stills compare to the APS-C Sensors? If I would switch from my A6400 - would I notice a huge difference in image-Quality when shooting in Crop-Mode and using my existing APS-C Glass? The resolution is lower but how do the images turn out?
    3) Now that my wish is finally there and the Shutter curtain can close when the camera is off: Is it far enough back that you can't reach it with the Lens when mounting it? You know - when you need to finagle a bit to get everything aligned. Is it "safe" is basically my question :D
    4) About the Noise-Thing. Everyone always shows the Noise-performance on Video. How is it on Photo? This sensor has more mega-pixels so I would expect more Noise in the image? Again - coming from 24MP APS-C it should be pretty good I think.
    As you can see - I'm on A6400 and want to move to that camera but there is just way to much focus on Video and Crop and 4K that I feel like no one wants to talk about the other side of "The ultimate hybrid camera" :-(
    Wish I could try before I buy but in my country this is not really a practice that you can rent a camera - at least not a Sony and not for feasable prices (300 bucks a week, anyone...)

    Does anyone know if rolling shutter can be addressed with future firmware updates? Have there been cases like that?

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  2 года назад +1

      Zack nailed it. Basically, when they went for the 33mp sensor, it meant that they were going to need to them read 9million extra pixels from the sensor every frame. So they out a faster processor in it to get it to about the same rolling shutter as the a7iii. If they had slapped this processor in a 24MP camera, I bet the rolling shutter could be kept pretty darn minimal.
