Good analysis, but one part was very lazy. This is when it is claimed the only reason to buy a windows laptop over a M-based Mac was work programs, backwards compatibility or gaming. There are a LOT of reasons to prefer windows. For example:
If you want a touchscreen, you choose windows
If you want a laptop you can use a stylus with, you choose windows
If you want a laptop with upgradable RAM, you choose windows
If you want a laptop with upgradable storage, you choose windows
If you want to future-proof your machine with wifi7, you choose windows
If you want a dedicated graphics card, you choose windows
If you want a two-in-one form factor, you choose windows
If you want to spend less than $900, you choose windows
If you want 16 gigs of RAM for under $1,400 you choose windows
If you want 2 tbs of storage for under $3000 you choose windows
If you want a form factor like the Surface Laptop Studio, you choose windows
If you want a form factor like the Zenbook duo, you choose windows
If you want a 17 or 18 inch screen, you choose windows
If you want an OLED screen, you choose windows
If you want to easily share photos from an Android phone, you choose windows
If you want a machine weighing less than 2.5 pounds, you choose windows
If you don't want to lock yourself into the Apple Garden, you choose windows
Macs are perfect if you need a powerful machine with great battery and you can pay the Apple tax. If you don't care about the items above, go for it. I had an M2 Macbook pro and it was great. But let's not pretend there were only three rational grounds for choosing windows over Mac. There's a reason windows has almost 90 percent market share. Lots of reasons, actually.

By the way let me ask you if you can buy a HDD and a SSD for about the same price, which one will you choose..? Just because Apple method is the SSD here.. the DDR5 have about 40GB/s transfer speed limit per channel, and you can't really find any laptop with more than 2 RAM slot.. that is about 80GB/s vs 400GB/s in M3 Max.. 5x faster memory.. you need a laptop with 8-10 RAM slots, and a PCIe 8.0 x16 slot for GPU to reach the same 400GB/s bandwith.. so do you prefer the slower HDD or the faster SSD..? And the SSD have the same price tag like the same sized HDD..?

Windows had the entire fanbase calling them Master Class or Master Race for so many years that Apple not taking the mantle of being part of the OpenAI master race be the number reason why they are now one of the new leaders of technologies as we know it.
Because Windows has always pushed hardware. Not software. We saw the cracks since Windows 8 and it worsened in 10 and is now falling apart at the seams with their OpenAI partnership on 11.
Apple have been ahead of the game by simply taking the back seat with Google.
Apple and Google have been teaming up and even pushing their softwares to newer heights with phones and tablets in a way that computers have failed to push.
And now phones are the new tablets and tablets are the new computers. But the computers are being replaced as a metaverse awaits both the consumers and the businesses in WEB 3.0.
If people could stop resorting to fear every problem that they are not facing alone, then they can be in control of what can go behind their own technology and push a massive boom and a Golden Age of media in a way corporations couldn’t have done alone.

And no, Office isn't a particularly taxing application, but these are low power devices that aren't geared for high performance use so it still represents a significant workload in that it bumps the processor up into higher power states. This is kind of irrelevant though because Office is pretty close to ubiquitous and is used frequently on MacOS and Apple Silicon as well.

In Inception, other people have to go into someone’s dreams to give them an idea subconsciously, hence the movie’s name. In Total Recall, the technology implants an already fabricated memory, making the person believe the memory is the reality they had already lived. Inception doesn’t alter the main dreamer’s memories of reality and is more of a stealth movie where the emphasis and turmoil is on the people entering the main dreamer’s mind, since the main character’s PTSD memory has entered the dream worlds. It becomes difficult for the main character to distinguish the dream from reality, since they begin jumping into dreams of people in the dreams which by the laws of the movie world, slows down time. This notion of is what is real and what is fake is the main similarity with Total Recall. Further, in Total Recall, since the main character can’t distinguish reality from fiction, the movie’s name is sort of a joke and fitting, since the main character remembers everything consisting of real and fabricated memories

Google knows all your data. If you use WhatsApp Facebook has all your data.
And don't get me started with TikTok. But when Microsoft does something similar NATIVELY AND LOCALLY with no Windows server involved, suddenly everyone complains about privacy.

    Here are some key takeaways:
    - Microsoft announced new Windows laptops and tablets powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon processors, aimed at competing with Apple's M-series chips.
    - The new Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 and Microsoft SQ3 chips are branded as "AI processors" with enhanced AI/neural engine capabilities.
    - A major new feature is "Windows Recall" which takes periodic screenshots to allow you to search your past activities.
    - The Surface Pro 9 tablet gets an ARM-based option with the SQ3 chip and optional OLED display.
    - The new Surface Laptop 5 comes in 13.5" and 15" sizes, both with OLED displays and long battery life claims.
    - Microsoft is touting better app compatibility through improved emulation compared to past Windows on ARM efforts.
    - Overall, Microsoft is making a renewed push into ARM-based Windows PCs to better compete with Apple's M-series and improve battery life.

More choices in hardware was histiorically a big driver of Windows, also the availability of cheap/free productivity apps. Android solves this and multi-tasks more seamlessly than Windows in a tablet. I see Surface laptops and tablets being DOA with Snapdragon X gen3 becoming the new coin-of-the-realm for everybody but Apple by year's end. Only hope for MS is if they intergrate a killer app like ChatGTP better than anyone else's implementation. DaVinci Resolve is already ported to Linux--and is coming to Android soon--so that ain't gonna cut it

No one wants these creepy AI features that are a huge privacy nightmare. Every month, they come out with something that makes gaming on Linux more and more appealing. And at the rate of progress that the community has made in the last several years. I don't think it's that far off.
They keep this up, and they will lose their market share in 10 years. The number of kids and teens these days that have never used a PC but only Chromebooks and Tablets, why would they ever start using a PC unless forced to for work, etc. Even most schools have switched to Chromebooks at this point. Like seriously, their days as the market leader in the Personal Comouter space are numbered.
Unless they do a huge about face, I don't see where their future is going other than Azure stuff.
If not for PC gamers and businesses/corporations being forced to use Windows they wouldn't even have the market share that they do. And gaming on Linux is just getting better and better. So again, why should I continue staying in this abusive relationship?

Yes. X Elite is fully supported by the Linux kernel. So basically for the next 20+ years minimum youll be able to use Linux on them. And probably forever unless ARM is ditched and everyone switches to Risc V after that.

    • @bosstowndynamics5488
      @bosstowndynamics5488 7 месяцев назад

@@BibbatronThis is *extremely* reductive - kernel support is only one of many, many requirements to run Linux on a device. The biggest issue here is going to be device firmware - there's no guarantee that these devices use UEFI in the same way that x86 does, and even if they do there's some iffy UEFI implementations around that make Linux support sketchy at best (Linux does run on x86 Surface devices but only with a lot of manual effort, a custom kernel in most cases, and a lot of bugs, for instance).

RISC v. CISC argument is 30+ years old. ARM has been why Windows phones have sucked, too. Anyone besides Microsoft not developing from the smartphones-first paradigm now? Open-source Linux-Lite (aka Android) with a Windows emulator would long ago have killed off anyone smaller than Microsoft. The breaking of the WinTel alliance/stranglehold with ARM is likely to finish what IBM/Motorola/Apple set in motion

    • @bosstowndynamics5488

Because ARM is Reduced Instruction Set Computing (parallel data channels, more pipes) and Windows is Complex Instruction Set Computing. Phones have used ARM based processors since Motorola was the shit

    • @bosstowndynamics5488
      @bosstowndynamics5488 7 месяцев назад

@@ivaneberle3972 Ok, but Windows Phone wasn't mainline Windows, and didn't have any functions that required the advanced instructions on x86. It also didn't run any Windows x86 applications, all the apps on it were ARM native. Your logic that an OS that at some point ran on x86 will be trash on ARM would imply that MacOS should be horrendous these days much more than it would suggest Windows Phone would be bad, and yet MacOS runs very well on ARM.
The real reason Windows Phone sucked is because it was late to the party and couldn't get enough market share to sustain itself. That's the long and the short of it.

Qualcomm is just not good at CPUs. It never was. Its only advantage is it can bundle its cellular chips. Where bundling makes sense, Qualcomm sells pretty well. Where cellular chips are not needed, no one wants Qualcomm processors. Their cost, performance and power consumption are just not competitive. Windows should have partnered with another company or designed its own chip like Apple did.

    • @bosstowndynamics5488

Disagree, Snapdragon 8 completely stomps stock ARM cores for performance and efficiency (this is a huge part of why Tensor sucks in terms of raw CPU performance - they're using stock ARM cores that can't keep up with Snapdragon 8). The 8cx/SQ processors were also decent enough, a huge part of what held them back was bad x86 instruction translation/support rather than raw performance. I agree that they're probably not quite as good as the Apple Silicon equivalent though, and I strongly suspect that the X Elite benchmarks have probably been massaged in some way to boost hype before launch, but being not quite as good as promised doesn't make them bad, they'll probably still be pretty good.

Windows and Android in general have always been about choices and ability to chose how you would want your device to work for you. So giving you the option to turn it completely off or chose a specific app to use it for is a win win. Apple on the other hand control how they want you to use your device, so they would have given you no option to chose how to use it.

The marketing on x elite is (massively) exaggerated, even if we believe or accept the cherry picked benchmarks, this CPU is still third rate, it only beats the worst Apple CPU (once made, (m3) ) fails to the newest worst cpu Apple makes, (m4) and doesn't compare to year old x86, (7940hs).
Worse than that, x elite is only 10 percent more efficient than that x86 that beats it
Still worse, zen 5 will be out, (or around the corner) when this third rate CPU ships
Still worse, ARM is a lie, it's only appearance of semi equal performance comes from exponentially more transistors than x86.
MS and PC manufacturers are exploiting billions of dollars in (false) marketing of ARM and Apple, hoping the uninformed and gullible falling for this marketing and jumping in.
At best, most should wait for a second gen elite, this first gen is (at best) second rate, offering very little currently in use by most users.
I might get benefit from native AI but I doubt it
Those of you thinking about buying, make sure you get one with max RAM if you want this relevant more than a few years because, of course, SoC RAM.
btw, 32 gigs is not enough, don't even think about 16, and only settle for 32 if you know you're getting the next gen when it arrives
I'd consider buying a surface at it's BASE price IF that price included 64 gigs
By the way, even for common users, there's no such thing as wasted RAM, whatever in excess gets pro-actively saturated with data so the are literally running almost no hard faults
Damn, mt 7 year old, $600 laptop has 32 gigs of ram
Finally what are you talking about windows tablets not being useable!?
They're spectacular, FAR better than iOS and Android with an actual full featured, non crippled operating system on it, and you an run Android apps if that's what you want, I think you just never spent the learning curve on a 2 in 1?
