As a bass player I was wondering the exact same thing haha
I think Alex is playing the bass line on a synth.
There is no bass in this song.. alot of his early material utilized twin guitars and synth... it wasn't until danny came in and started writing with him the bass become more apparent.. although certain songs from PHM did use a dominant bass line.
