    As a Mancunian who lived in Birmingham for 25 years, it has to be about the food, and I'd go with Birmingham. But in terms of atmosphere, I couldn't disagree more. Wilmslow Road is an unrelenting corridor, with no real community feeling. Witness I go to the south end to do any grocery shopping, as some of those supermarkets at the north end are a bit pricey. The concentration of food, inc fast food, places makes it feel a bit artificial, like a food theme park. And knowing what weekend nights are like with a million students doesn't help me think any better of it. Whereas Sparkhill is a real place. I was a bit surprised you walked, and OK that doesn't show the area off to its best. But you're right, no-one would do it when the bus is £2. And I'm not sure Shabab is the best, though we all have our favourites. Good you went, though. And by bus! 😱

    • @richardbradbury3658
      @richardbradbury3658 Месяц назад +1

      Yep, I live about ten minutes walk from Shabab's and it would never occur to me to go there (generally I get a balti at Diwan's on the Alcester Road, or in the Old Moseley Arms, both of which have an excellent atmosphere). Not sure what gave you the impression that was the best place to go, and the price was absurd - a Lamb balti and garlic naan at Diwans is under fifteen quid, and the building is actually complete - also it is easier to get to from the centre on the 50 bus route which runs once every ten minutes or so from right outside the coach station. You would have been better off doing some research first, and might have had a very different experience.

  • @chriscoughlan5221
    @chriscoughlan5221 Месяц назад +5

    I was in Shababs in early April. You were lucky with your waiter, my waiter just took my order without recommendations. I also chose a lamb balti and had a garlic naan. I chose my table and went looking for an outdoor for a beer, but had a change of heart and bought a chilled bottle of water. Sat down, and discovered these unusual chrome containers. they contained water!! whoops!
    This was for me nostalgic experience, I hadn´t eaten in this area since 1996, and previously mid 80s. In the 80s balti houses were giving food away, it was that cheap!!
    I believe only 4 restaurants are left after the rest of them just went out business.

The meal was quite pricey although it was authentic!! I did however prefer the curry from the curry mile in Manchester as i think it's not only the meal but the venue that creates a more enjoyable experience. I was a regular visitor from the mid eighties when curry cafe's as we called them started popping up, I'm of the old school opinion, that to be a place to eat, they won't have an alcohol licence, you have to ask for cutlery, and they serve Rasmalai and have a sweet counter, Though I havn't been to the Balti triangle for about 15 years

    Yes I was forced to catch a Coach to Telford from Birmingham bus station during a very annoying train strike in 2023! Agree often trains are too expensive! The meal was pricey but the Lamb and Naan combo looked magnificent with a Mango Lasse...my choice exactly looked 9/10. Not far from me near Parramatta is "Harris Park" and that's exactly like your curry Mile! Nice video and a worthwhile day out- pity about 4 hours on a coach getting home- last year my Telford coach was 1 hour late also😢

    Personally I love lamb on the bone cooked well, so I would choose the Balti and Naan. But agree, Birmingham looked a bit dull. As for travelling by coach abroad, it depends how many hours you can suffer in a stifling hot packed coach? I'm still hoping you'll go to Aberystwyth whilst it's sunny, for Welsh cakes and lava bread. Or how about coming to London for Pie & Mash with parsley liquor at Manzies? You won't regret it! 😊👍

    Bradford is the best in the country - by a long shot.
    I've eaten in Birmingham, Brick Lane & Manchester s curry mile - even my favourite Pakistani restaurant is Far Pavilions in Swinton.
    Bangladeshi food is my ultimate favourite.
    I went to an Asian wedding in Bradford - never have I experienced food like it.

    Great video as always... Personally I think that yes £25 is alot but then again that seems to be about right now, based on what other restaurants charge.
    To expect to pay £80 by train though, thats ridiculous...unlike in many other countries, where train journeys often have a fixed price, the fares paid by British passengers fluctuate according to which operator passengers use, as well as the date tickets are purchased, the time of travel, and the changing demand for that particular service. Fares are set automatically according to computerised calculations, as UK train companies try to increase revenues by filling seats on emptier trains by offering much cheaper tickets well in advance. Apparently if you book a month in advance, its alot cheaper...Trains, most smaller stations, and routes are split into franchises run by different companies. Around a dozen of the franchise holders are linked to governments in other countries... France, Germany and Netherlands are the three main ones... Labour has pledged to fully renationalise Britain’s railways within five years, to potentially deliver better value for money and drive up standards.

    London is the best for curry - authentic Indian curry though rather than the Bangladeshi British Indian style that you get at places like Shababs. Give me a random Indian restaurant down East Ham High Street any time of the day, followed by some fresh gulab jamun.

    We can get the same meal here in Cambodia (has a large Indian community) for about £8. I think 'British' curries are overrated. The people don't really understand the food.

    You almost made it thru the vid...
    And then at 12:00 you did it...
    Naan bread...naan means bread...
    Why not just say bread bread ...
    or naan naan...
    or bread naan, etc. ...
    Never the less...naan is bread...bread is naan.
