I would argue that it *IS* inherently caused by Twitter.
Here's why I say this:
When Twitter first came into existence it was during the time of blogging, where people would just write shit and describe their day and/or things that were going on in their life. Basically a diary or journal that everyone could read and (depending on the platform) comment on/interact with in some capacity. Twitter was exactly this but extremely short-form and it went out of its way to encourage people to put out these microblogs *and* interact with said microblogs.
I remember in the early days of this where the running joke was people tweeting about every step/aspect of their day. Wake up? Gotta tweet. Make breakfast? Gotta tweet that. Going to work? Tweet that out. Gotta take a shit? Oh, you best be sure that's gonna be a tweet!
This formed the building-blocks of what the culture of Twitter was. It created the expectation that folks were a part of this other person's life (and that this person, in turn, had a bunch of people always watching them with limitless attention). While Twitter has certainly evolved and grown beyond that by this point, that whole idea of "you have to be a part of a thing -> why aren't you part of this thing?" is still very much the core of what it is to be on Twitter.
With regards to the short-form content aspect, I agree that this is a huge facet and has certainly made things objectively worse in that regards. However, short-form content alone doesn't create the meme "I like waffles -> so you hate pancakes, then?". Make no mistake it makes it really REALLY easy to take those logical leaps due to the severely truncated nature of short-form content, but I see that as being more of a facilitator and accelerant.
Thing is, this behavior is not unique on twitter, you can see it on tiktok, instagram, tumblr before they banned porn and those people migrated to twitter, even on some circles of youtube.
Also the people that was born way after twitter also interact heavely in this behavior.
@@neuplop
Except that Twitter is older than all of those sites. Tumbler came up almost as a consequence of Twitter's extreme limitations.
Hell, most (but not all) social media came into existence as either direct competition to Facebook and/or Twitter, or as a way to provide things Facebook and/or Twitter didn't offer.
Instagram, for example, used to be all about pictures...because neither Facebook nor Twitter allowed the ability to post insane amounts of photos at the time.
Twitter pretty much got the ultra-short form content ball rolling, and because of the way they did it, they contributed heavily to all of the things outlined. Were those things going to happen anyway? Probably, especially as more social media companies started cropping up.
Personally from how I avoid any algorithm feed (especially fyp) in twitter, it is still pretty much like "sharing little things in your life". I usually see things like music they hear, what is happening in their IRL life, the game they played, complains about their school or jobs, things that happen on their mind, depression rant posts etc.
It is definitely shorter than posts in tumblr, but it is just a lot less toxic than what people tend to see, as most people are just doing their thing in their lives, and it's just nice to see what my friends are doing from time to time
I feel like the algorithm definitely contributed to some of this problem: since the little things happened in people's life is not really engaging, it's less likely to get recommended to people, leading to people seeing more posts with really strong words AKA discourse, call out posts, and controversy
@@voikalternos
If you avoid feeding the Algorithm, you're going to have a much better time; unfortunately, not interacting is exactly the opposite of how the platform (whether it's Twitter, Facebook or something else) wants the platform used.
...and yes, this is pure human psychology here; people don't tend to talk about/interact with 'good' things (at least in how the algorithm measures/gauges things anyway), as such the negativity is what gets amplified because if people don't like something, they're gonna say/do something about it.
It's 'no such thing as bad press' in real-time and to a logical extreme.
You could make the argument that it's just abusing our biology and psychology and making it more apparent than on other sites or platforms. This happens IRL too, not just on Twitter.
An easy example: a person works in an office of 100 employees (on their level of the hierarchy). Their colleague whom they think works very little speaks to them once a day only to "order them around" and he's been doing it for months. Suddenly, he gets promoted and everybody but them and and their two direct neighbors are praising him. What reaction do you expect from this person? Outrage -> questioning -> alienation. What the person didn't know is that the colleague was actually really invested in the development of the office, so much so that they would finish their work in a tenth of the time others would spend doing it and used the rest the time to make suggestions to higher ups. After months of doing so, they got promoted so they could spend all their time doing just that. But the 3 neighbors didn't know that because they only focused on the fact that they were bossed around.
Do you see how the abstraction of all but one aspect (that can be summed up in a tweet) of a person's life can be used to weaponize hatred? Now imagine that on a national scale where each of the 3 people can speak to other branches of the company where the same phenomenon happens and you basically have Twitter 🤷♂️.
with the whole "too long didn't read" thing, i feel like that's a symptom of the internet as a whole
i've seen youtube comments which had replies saying "wow that's a long comment" when it was 4 or 5 lines long, which to me is completely ridiculous, i've made probably dozens of comments approaching three digit line numbers for various things, and i happily read them as well, it's just the attention span thing all over again
Reading long writings are for kings. It is boring but valuable. Sometimes i read people having a fight with each other and they try to explain themself (with long writings of course) and other person sometimes just answers with "tldr". Dude, whats the point of trying to argue if you are not going to argue? Put your thoughts so i can read them.
Wow, this is a long comment. /s
And like. Then don't read it. Nobody's forcing you! Nobody gets told that.
I wish that was an automatic reply to tldr or tldw: TDRI or TDWI. Then don't read/watch it.
I think the whole demand of a TL:DR also comes from tabloids and other outlets just fluffing up their content with meaningless dribble as an appetizer.
No, CNBC, I don't go to your site to have a fine dining experience, get right to the main course or get the hell out of my feed.
RUclips also has a character limit on comments. I've run into it before.
Of course, this reminded me of when I wrote comment recently and said "that's my two cents" and someone replied with "Two cents? That was more like $500!"
I think people have been conditioned for the sound bite, the 280 character hot take, and making snap judgements. Impulsive, shallow interactions have become the norm, or more of the norm, and actually diving deep into a topic or an argument is seen as grandstanding or browbeating.
It's kind of funny how in high school my writing was described as terse by my AP English Lit teacher and now I have to be careful lest I wax loquacious. Maybe it's because I've gotten older, pr maybe it's because I've realized I can't take it for granted that someone knows what I know about a subject. Either way, I think Twitter's microblogging roots have become more and more of a detriment to reasoned discourse and discussion. Doesn't matter who owns it, it's always going to be a dumpster fire if you have to explain yourself over multiple tweets that people only read part one of.
“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. They may be more likely to go to Heaven yet at the same time likelier to make a Hell of earth. This very kindness stings with intolerable insult. To be “cured” against one’s will and cured of states which we may not regard as disease is to be put on a level of those who have not yet reached the age of reason or those who never will; to be classed with infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals.”

in the philippines theres a thing called "mema" short for "memasabi lang / may masabi lang". in english its roughly "say something, anything, just so it looks like you are part of the thing or you know something about it". its general origin is from gossiping + the fear of missing out.
it is stronger in social media that are text based cause its faster and keyboard typing makes one say things s/he wouldnt say with his/her mouth.
theres also the aspect of people jumping unto trends so they feel that they are cool.
so thats "mema" + fomo + jumping to trends + wanting to look cool

Tribalism + Miscommunication
For me, I treat Shorts as a quick way to "demo" a youtube channel. If I like someone's short, I check out their channel. It's basically a series of commercials to me.
ive seen youtubers use it that way since shorts arent nearly as monetizable as full videos
Low self esteem is also a driver for "I need to be a part of this", as well as "lowering others' status elevates my status". Social media helps amplify this, since everyone is watching, all the time. It's always recess on the playground, with everyone vying for attention. Being a part of "the event" is a connection to your friend group, as well as a status symbol ("I was there, man; I was part of it."). Being "the event" yourself is an even higher status symbol, which is likely why it's trends on TikTok: "I like that person's clip, so I'm going to make one like it, and hopefully people will share mine too." And even if theirs is the most popular, you still get bonus points if you were an early joiner on a trend. Social media amplifies in/out groups, both by its immediacy, as well as its multiple new categories of groups; and from what you've observed, it seems the more short-form, the more amplification.
I think its because for the last 15 years, people having been saying that if you're silent, then your agreeing/complacent with the [bad] thing. Whatever that thing is.
Not to discredit you, i learned that this "if you're silent, then you're agreeing" thought is over thousand years old and kind of correct. Not correct for folks. It's for people with strong reach. Say you're a CEO in a big company. It is correct for you, say you're someone working 9-5 and living bill to bill. It is not your problem and not correct for you. We are seeing things going on right now and strong reach people are being silent about it.
@@cabir.bin.hayyan.800 The demand for every person to have an opinion if they have "Reach" is how you get really dumb celebrities endorsing politicians because "They're like punk rock right?"
It's better to be silent and ignorant than to open one's mouth and dispel all doubt.
You also end up with corporations that take a vested interest in trying to shape policy and public opinions who then get knee deep in mass producing propaganda and methods to make people accept or become complacent while they curate a better consumer, which is nightmarish and far beyond the "We make thing/do thing you want to give us money for, you give us money, we do thing, we're both happy"
We currently live in a popularity contest driven by fear and market researchers and most people don't actually do any form of research, including some of the most fervent activists and outspoken types, and will live and die by repeating what they thought sounded good from someone they liked, over any actual genuine introspection, self reflection, analysis and research. I can count on two hands the amount of people I've met who actually gone through a personal journey to understand the world around themselves.
@@cabir.bin.hayyan.800what if they're just busy? Can't anybody just be busy? Life is so absurdly complex, how can anybody say that you agree when you don't even know anything about a subject. Even experts don't know, hell the more you know about a subject the less conclusive it is!
The default state of everything is I don't know, not I disagree or agree.
To be fair though, if no one does anything about then nothing gets done... so it is better to empower people to seek solutions than it is to tell people to ignore them. You can't care maximally about everything... but you should care a little about the things that ruin or destroy people's lives and maybe take certain actions to reduce the amount of awfulness in the world.
@@Khwerz i think my comment got deleted. I say you are right and i think we can expect a reaction from big company people. Not that a reaction is a must.
In art history we talked about "the other" a lot. An exotic rug becomes exotic because you assign value to it based on the "other". The other is a different group or even an individual that is not you and you make choices based on the differences between you and them. One of the choices people make about the "other" is to ensure that they are not them. It's sort of a way to protect the sense of self among other things. People develop an attachment to their favorite streamers and then anyone who isn't also that interested becomes part of the "other". And one way to protect yourself from "infiltrations" or "corruption" is to invest in a leader. The more invested you feel the more protected you feel.
This sort of thing is abused by bad actors intentionally a lot, especially in politics
Pretty much every dictator does this
Cults use this a lot too
"Short Content" can't be fixed that easily, because even if it was longer content, people would just selectively hear what they want to hear, and ignore the context. Look how many articles are written in the news with misleading headlines where if you read the context, you get that the headlines is out of context on purpose to mislead people and get clicks. Then if you look at the comments it's obvious 90% of people didn't read the article, or did read it and ignored the full picture. they mentally twisted the story, on purpose to be hateful.
I also think a huge contributor is the fact that social media algorithms usually respond to *interactions* regardless of whether they're positive or negative. It doesn't matter whether you make a good impression or whether people like/agree with what you have to say, if they interact with it, you benefit. Therefore, if you want to grow your influence/following, all that matters is "being part of" as many high-traffic conversations as possible. Users are trained to value saying *something* over adding value to a conversation.
"I have to be a part of this" has been the whole point of social media, regardless of the platform, since inception.
we need to bring back calling people fucking idiots and not getting banned for it
this is so true like mass reporting an account is such a huge problem on twitter like it's literal tribalism and I've seen account that try to be this sort of "content police" and they would have the same profile pic or some version of it and then go after accounts they don't like, it's madness.
identitarianism + censorship =modern year

"Pay to Nuance" is such a revealing concept!
Yeah, it's funny how TikTok coagulated into the big chaotic mess that it is. I think most of the folks who liked to make dance and music videos on Vine ended up migrating to TikTok. But the creators who liked making comedic shorts on Vine migrated to YTshorts.
I think the reason why youtube has so little short form drama is because most of the platform is is about videos ranging from 4-20+ minutes. Whenever a drama bomb comes out that gets everyones attention its always a half hour or hour+ long video and i think its because youtube is built around long form content with added short form content on the side
RUclips shorts seem to be fine specifically _because_ the platform is so much worse at shortform than others. Everyone comes here for longform content; usually analysis, dissection, and dissertation, from what I've seen, and the shortform content is either just a brief reprieve from that, with cute soft things or comedy, or advertises and actively encourages you to watch the longform content. RUclips's shortform content is either ads or fluff, and not much else, which is greatly different from the other platforms, as they have no other forms of content besides the shortform, being their major "selling" point.
A couple years ago, Wales Interactive was going to release a thriller game "Gamer Girl" about a girl who streams gaming online, and Twitter set out to destroy the company claiming that this game would push people to stalk and attack streamers IRL. The same streamers who play run-and-gun games, and Sims 4, which is popular with torturing the Sim people. The month this all happened was mid July, if you go looking.
This is why I prefer 10 minutes video format like this one. You actually have enough « room » to put a reasonable amount of context.
"It helps no one to be reductive."
- Xavier, Renegade Angel
I agree, this lack of room with short content has forced us to over-optimize opinions to account for the space. And while we're making efficient use of the space, there's quite a bit we lose in the process. This is one of the reasons why I still like keeping a blog, as I don't have to face character limits, except for image descriptions.
I recommend looking into a book called "Optimal Illusions: The False Promise of Optimization", as the author delves more into the optimist mindset and what we lose in becoming more efficient.
I have neither a Twitter nor a TickTock account, but I unironically enjoy going through my RUclips shorts, because there's some really cool stuff in there. Sure, there is garbage as well, but channels like Hank Green, PirateSoftware and others put out really cool stuff and I learned things I would've never learned otherwise because I simply don't have enough time in my day to watch as many "long form" videos as I would like to (while still being able to do all the other things I want to get done in my day). Comedy is also very strong in RUclips shorts.
One of the most revolutionary videos I've watched today. Good job Thor!
A lot of drama on twitter boils down to:
someone makes an accusation
There are already thousands of accusations on twitter, how can you keep up with them all
People associate that person they never thought of before with that accusation
People move on, and that unfounded accusation becomes fact to them
Twitter is a damning space that should be ignored at all costs for deciding a person's worth. Someone will eventually say some wild baseless shit about you, and it will have thousands of people just think you're the worst person alive because they can't be bothered to research every post that's on their feed.

new ice breaker: "I heard on twitter that you're a bad person"
Lack of all context is the deep seated reason. It leads to misinterpretation, miscommunication and tribalism. It's easy to form an incorrect opinion based on one image without context because you basically invent the context by making assumptions which are often wrong.
If I'm not mistaken, that phenomenon is called "context collapse".
I like to call this problem, "Lord of The Flies."
I also think that the short form bred miscommunication, and then that evolved into forming an insular, echo-chamber website. And the people who recognize that it is bad for their health, or recognize they don't like to be so aggressive... they leave. Or only interact minimally.
It's exactly like gene flow: but only in one direction, causing the average twitter user to be aggressive, short tempered, judgemental, and loud.
If I had gone into behavioral science i would have LOVED to write a thesis on social media and how it effects human being's behaviors, because each site is different and it's a perfect example of behavioral... microcosms, of humanity. Each website also develops different lingo which is fascinating.
Thor trying to figure out theories and concepts that exist in my field of science is amusing

@1:40 that's AKA Concern Trolling, it's deflection and whataboutery, often from people defending the thing that you're being critical of (eg. Sony). 'You can't be concerned about X since you haven't stated concern about Y'

"i have to be a part of this, but why? because it has to be"

Ha, found myself in chat 3:17
At least in the beginning of this video all I was thinking of, XKCD 386 Duty Calls "Can't go to sleep, someone is wrong on the Internet".
i think reason why youtube shorts not went there and be hard to go there
youtube lets you do full videos , making short is a choice
on twitter you cant make full contet post , even imgur not long ago extended its character limit becouse it was incredibly problematic and even small discussions were turning into chains of person replying to own comment 10 times and create a long chain
with longer comments this is less of a case as you can realisticly with some cuts fit a bit better into new word limit and you can add 1-2 replies in context rather then 6-8
This is exactly how I've felt about Twitter for the longest time. I've found myself rubbing up against the character limit with nearly every single post I make, and I've found it hard to not succumb to the pressure of getting myself involved in things I can't do anything about in fear of being a bad person if I don't. Needless to say Twitter makes me feel like shit almost every time I open it and I've limited myself to 3-5 posts every time I open it or just avoiding my "For You" page.
Part of twitter's culture is certainly the short form content like Thor explained, but the other part of it is that in terms of social media history, it was a rather large site with not a lot of dividing lines between people with very different backgrounds and different cultural experiences. You throw a whole lot of people together with very different cultures and beliefs and you get a lot of tribalism fights. Contrast that with early internet where a lot of people with similar interests would gather on like-minded forums, or later on with facebook which despite its enormous size has pretty hard dividing lines between friend groups, social contacts, and interest groups.
This is the reason I exclusively use RUclips for social media. It's long enough for context, but still more engaging than a straight up article.
The main issue with twitter is if you're in a circle with arguing it's all arguing all the time, no breaks, and that's not healthy.
Someone on youtube had this mindset in a reply to a comment I made, which I took both sides of something, gave my opinion but respected those that disagree.
They pretty much said "if you don't agree with me, you're a bad person". Confused I repied "Why?" just that nothing more.
They surprisingly didn't reply and went silent. Confused I asked again but made it clear I was genuinely interested on being corrected or understand what they mean't.
They replied "You win" which was weird but I answered "It's not about winning, it's about truth and growing as a person. I don't mind being wrong if it means it gets corrected". Literally silence since then.
What a strange mindset...
"That's really interesting, where does that come from?"
If more people asked this question when people come after them instead of just others get under their skin and respond with the instant knee jerk, the world be a much happier place rn.
I used to have the same kind of mentality (tho I never was on twitter in my life), where I would have an opinion on any matter in the world and then push everyone to either have my opinion or be shamed otherwise. The period when I transitioned away from that mentality was when I faced an actually complex problem that I actually *had* reason to be involved in and have an opinion. Then seeing other people who basically get in that problem just to have it made me realize how dumb and ignorant I looked from the side.
It is absolutely a design problem. It is 100% the algorithm looks to keep you engaged by showing things that it knows will upset you enough to engage you. Twitter has lots of ways around the short form part, it's not a flaw in short form communication.
i have to put this video on the frontpage of youtube users
It's FOMO, but metastasized... Honestly, Thor is on the right track with the tribalism and anti-intellectualism angle.
I believe that's a part of the drive for short-form content, many people (read: corporations) have a vested interest in keeping context and nuance out of content, because they rely on those knee-jerk reactions and tribal mentality.
I also agree with the trends vs info dump assessment.
Twitter is just for broadcasting thoughts. No context possible in just a tweet.
I personally chalk it up to the lack of silos in modern social media. Old forum spaces and IRC had this, but on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and Reddit It's so easy for people to just...wander into a community and be a nuisance. Discord might have a lot of problems as a platform, but one thing it does really well is allow self-moderated silos to exist. You can actually feel like you're part of a community again.
I think what makes TikTok and Shorts different on average and why TikTok generally has a lot more trends and dramatic stuff compared to YT Shorts, is because TikTok was created with the short form structure, while YT Shorts were added on later. RUclips already had a bunch of established creators who create more long form videos. So a lot of shorts ended up just being either more of the same things those creators already made but shorter, or bite-sized clips of their longer form videos.
Good lord, had been having this issue all over. I think a part of it is, people don't care about context as much. It's the "I have to be right, right now." Paired with "Either you're with me or against me." Then the... People don't seem to know uow to discuss or debate. I've had someone leap into a discussion I'm having, "Stop arguing!" and the people discussing are just, "... We're not. We're talking and discussing."
Each time he said "enemy" I thought he was saying "anime"
Just thought I would throw this out there, I like shorts because it's a lot easier for me to say "im going to scroll for X amount of time" then actually stop after that amount of time
6:46 me who have watched dozens of videos from Pirate Software one after another, since I found him yesterday 💀
People here having thoughtful comments makes me so happy, but then there's also me, where all I can think of is how old I am for 1) thinking Twitter's limit was still 140 characters and 2) mistakenly thinking Twitter's character limit used to be EVEN SMALLER than 140 characters.
I think RUclips shorts often having longer videos attached to them makes it easier to get proper context
Read my mind in the first sentence. Thor is the GOAT.
I partially agree, I think twitter is very "community" based akin to tumblr; however, it also throws your content outside of your community which can also create a mad max us v them mentality. And what is being pointed to is that buzzwords become a signal for being with or against the community.
On the length of post, this is why Twitter in Japanese is very different compared with the culture here in English side of things. With just 140 characters (and later 280), you can put a ton more information on there than English.
The reason why TikTok and Twitch are different from RUclips shorts is because the first 2 are end in themselves where most of RUclips shorts is trailers/advertisements for Channels. there are very few creators or users using Shorts as an end in itself.
The greater sweater. I fucking love that.
It's algorithm brain. We're taught that everything we see is for us in any digital environment, therefore if something is not for us, then it must be bad. We've cultivated this mentality with our machines.
And this is why we watch the clip channel.
I think it's mostly human nature, we were able to survive better when we had a group that was suspicious of outsiders, so we have a need to be part of a community, and a tendency to view those outside of that community negatively, or believe they have negative intent. Twitter just makes it possible to immediately express those suspicions to the entire world.
i think one of the reasons why youtube is less toxic in the way you're describing is because the incentive or 'push' to engage is lower. you can absolutely join youtube and lurk and just watch videos silently. you can do the same with twitter but with twitter everyone's profiles are so much more personal and detailed, making it easier to see that the people who are engaging the most are people with strong agency. This makes a user feel like if they dont ALSO engage, they are 'losing' or 'falling behind' in the marketplace of ideas to other people who are seemingly more confident in sharing opinions and swaying public discourse.
to this day I don’t understand the purpose of twitter beside shitting directly on brands comments to show your frustration with their product. Anything else is either public journaling which is depressing if you fail to get traction or making jokes which is nothing if you don’t have an audience, it all boils down to “I’m not a celebrity so why do I need a twitter?”
"If you're not with me, you're against me."
Doesn't even matter if anyone has anything to do with the subject.
Ive found my experience on twitter improve massively when i started asking myself "do i need/want to get involved with this?" More often
I think the distinction between Tiktok and RUclips with short form content comes down to how you engage. On youtube, you like or dislike and maybe comment. Your engagement goes to the creator and their viewers. On Tiktok, there's more of a culture around posting a response Tiktok, meaning your engagement goes to your viewers. This means your content will be seen by people in your own filter bubble, so it makes it safer to make highly critical content, without risk of backlash.
Hmm. What could it be? The whole time he was talking about fanboyism, I was applying it to politics and how people act with that. It's the meme about games sucking these days "What could it be? Must be MTXs." It's identitarianism.
It's worse, the short form content (short form attention spans) trains your brain in not even being able to do attentive reading (long form attention spans) anymore.
Taking it an other step further, search engines can cause the same: do a search quickly open a tab, check if it's relevant and close it again.
And this behavior already existed long before short form content platforms and RUclips shorts became mainstream.
Sadly I think what is the real issue: the Internet causes information overload, we often get FOMO, like an addition, because we can't consume everything we want which creates the time constraint which is why we skip long form content.
It's about "Mob mentality" and it goes back for over a thousand years. It's about feeling insecure about NOT being part of the greater crowd's opinion and standing out as something different. Because different makes you a target. It's a survival mechanism in the mind, and with social media being the ruler of the day, if you're not on the bandwagon you get run over by it.
stop censoring the swears it makes it hard to hear what he's trying to say, especially at the end there
Welcome to RUclips if your video has swears in it the algorithm will be displeased, and ad revenue per view will be lower
@@Anymal104 but the channel isn't monetized I thought
It’s mostly 💩 starting with a CR or an SH
@@permeus2nd yeah its just distracting, either way dude got hired to make vids for Thor directly now
it worked, i got here from the shorts xD
6:08 I guess that's what this channel makes better than shorts
Thor discovers tribalism.
Fucking love this man and this discussion
I feel like it’s not a “your a bad person” it’s more of a “if your not doing anything by the time it’s over your not gonna like the outcome and even you do you didn’t do anything, you didn’t accomplish anything”
Moral equivalence for video game companies.
To an extent I get it.
I'm so god damn frustrated by people who still buy Activision Blizzard, Ubisoft, etc.
Its 100% Twitter(s Algorithm). I often get Stuff i hate or really dislike. Even if (or rather because…) i do dislike Stuff or hide Stuff. The Thing is that Twitter NEEDS Interaction. The more Interactions they have the better for them. Thats all there is to it i think. And its proven that you are more likely to interact with Stuff that you dont like.
I think it's because people are too connected. We don't have microcosms where 10 or 20 people can talk and everyone has a voice. We have forums with 1000s of voices where only the loudest, most annoying, most shocking voices are heard.
This is literally all of social media. The companies are aware of it and Facebook whistleblowers have stated that they use this to maximise engagement and make more money
OP: Redditors who do XYZ, what is it like?
Top post: My friend's uncle's, sister's dog used to be owned by someone who did XYZ and here are all of MY feelings about XYZ.
True that but it goes much deeper than that. The "programming" of our brains starts in our childhood with cartoons where there is only good or bad. Then the same goes with Blockbuster movies, only good vs bad. And at the end it translates in our real life. Famous words from 2001 "Either you´re with us or you´re against us. And if you´re against us we will destroy you."
So if you think deeper now, you´ll ask your self, well where do I belong if I don´t care about your situation? Am I against you in your eyes and will you destroy me now because I don´t care about your situation? Am I also against you if I don´t make any statement on your situation?
The world we live in is weird. Everyone wants to be a part of something that is trending, just out of fear to be destroyed/canceled.
I think Thor might have accidentally hit on why RUclips Shorts seem less overall toxic than other places in the way he uses his shorts. Ie... RUclips shorts can be utilized as a Bread Crumb trail towards a creator's actual context laden long form posts. Where as in Tiktok all content is inherently and irrevocably short form.
It probably makes a massive difference in the overall approach to socialization.
The old "we vs them" thing humans don't even try to let go. It is not short form content that creates it, it comes from the very structure of the brain. And it's the reason morality and rationality were invented to deal with.
An argument could be made for them wanting an “expert” to express an opinion on all companies, to be “fair”, like jury commenting on player behaviors being good or bad.
But I got an other theory.
Thor is someone known to be knowledgeable and logical.
Very big brain !
So people wish he would talk about everything because it would satisfy them to hear common thoughts on a subject, especially from someone they have high regards for.
Because it is a desire to feel comparable to your idole or something great.
It to feel satisfaction from having someone talking about something and being able to say : “See, he’s like me. I’m smart too !”
The moment they lose their patience from waiting for you to comment on their matter, they feel betrayed and they get their anger out on you, the one they want to compare themselves too.
Why ?
Common acceptance process.
1)Denial: “I just gotta wait…Any second now”
2)Anger: “You piece of sh*t ! Why ?! Do you wish the misery of your kind. Deliver the truth for us to deliver ourselves”
3)Marchandising: “I’m gonna send him a message saying that I apologize but it is important for me (aka my ego) and the people (pff…Who ?) that he talks about it.
The fate of humanity is in his hands”
4) Sadness: “What if I’m just dumb…Maybe he’s so smart he has more important things to think about…Am I worthless for trying to defend Microsoft, my beloved (billion dollar company).”
5) Acceptance: “…H-hold on…Have I actually been fantasizing all day long on him sharing thoughts about this topic only to make me feel clever by comparing my point of view to his ? What am I doing ? Gotta touch grass”
The End
Thanks for reading
The moment identity and ego became a prominent thing on the internet is when it all started going downhill. It's not bout the quality of the discussion anymore but how it will signal superiority (for numerous benefits).
The reason RUclips suffers less of this is because you're forced to engage directly with the content when you comment, rather than reply directly to someone.
The cause is mental health issues. It's loneliness, and meaninglessness. So people feel like they need to be seen first of all. People without an identity, long for group identity. They are looking for a pack to identify with. It's part of "Social Identity Theory" In Psychology. On top of that, people who feel bad about themselves, feel better when putting others down. It's essentially just online bullying to some degree. There is probably multiple other angles.
i think the "i have to be a part of this" is also people they dont have anything else
I actually disagree that the motivation for tweeting is wanting to be involved. When i look at my own motivations, i often feel like i can't let people be wrong on the internet, and correcting them is a good thing to do that helps fix things (and i mean that in the vaguest possible sense).
So i think the motivation for being toxic on Twitter is often militant, even if it's for silly causes like fandom drama or ship wars. There's a delusion that Twitter arguments actually matter, that this is a battlefield of ideas which influences the course of society and you need to be there to influence it towards the side of good.
Also:
In art in general but movies specifically, there's a well-known concept that what isn't on the screen is left to the audience's imagination, and their imagination always works a lot harder than the artist's.
The equivalent on that on the internet is that, when you only write a few words, you leave a lot of stuff implied, and that's a lot of room for people to insert things that you weren't thinking of but they've been thinking of. They'll identify you as part of a group that you didn't know existed, and they'll assume you have opinions you've never thought of.
Censoring word "shit" is wild
It's not a twitter or short form issue. It's a cultivated identity problem. We're so market segmented that it's part of our core being.
Yooo 4th level spells!
Source: loneliness epidemic
People feel the need to be part of something and can't find it
"If i had more time, my letter would be shorter" is a very interesting concept. It's the reason i usually limit my youtube comments to 4 lines maximum.
Technically, the character limit should cause people to think carefully how to best convey their thoughts, but somehow we got some really weird rabid herd sheep on those platforms and it's both fascinating and saddening.
