    I bowled 1 hand righty from 1980 (6 years old) until 2020 (46 years old). Due to nagging injuries that never quite completely got 100% better (left knee, right wrist & shoulder), I decided the Covid shut down was the perfect time to either get 100% healthy, or just make the switch. So after the local bowling alleys re-opened, and I was still in mild pain from bowling even after 4 months of solid rest from bowling, I switched to 2H lefty. Now my experience is different from yours, but it took me the better part of a year to retrain myself how to bowl lefty, and actually get back to the 400 rev rate I had as a 1H righty. I'm still not as accurate, and about 1-2mph slower than I was before, but I'm getting better faster now. In another year I expect to be back to where I was before the switch. The big advantage... like you said finger/thumb holes. No more tape, powder, rosin, tweeking pitches... the entire box of supplies I used to carry just to keep my hand in good shape isn't even needed anymore. I took a massive step backward in my game for the past year and a half... but it's worth it now that I'm getting back to near where I was before... and there is none of the old nagging aches and pains involved. IMHO the best time to make a change is now. If it's something you want to do... do it. I put off making a change for a long time, and just dealt with it. So glad I finally did it.

      Similar issue here. Hurt both wrists/thumbs playing golf. Havent bowled in several years. Thinking about picking it back up but I dont think my thumb would hold up to the abuse of bowling 1 hand. Just not sure I can get enough speed on a 2 hand release to keep it on the lane.

      I'm in the same position, tore my rotator cuff last year before winter league started, 25+ years took its toll, can no longer hold ball with 1 arm, lost strength. I went today for the first time to try 2 handed so see if I could do it and come back, definitely different and a humble experience, but no pain. Just gotta keep practicing.

    When my grandson (@16 yrs old) wanted to bowl and got me out of a 20 year layoff, he played around with both styles. Once he was starting to get the basics down he asked me what style to go with. I said the same answer you gave, "which style do you have more fun with?" We had all his thumb holes filled and he never looked back. After 3 years he is averaging over 200 and still improving.

    I switched in April this year and plugged the thumbs in my balls as well. When you do that, do keep in mind your new PAP and how the balls are laid out. Also note how deep your finger holes are. Since you no longer have a thumb, it will have more mass. I know Mo Pinel always suggested at least 3.5” deep for no thumb bowlers to help compensate.
    Switching to two hands I think is the smart move! Your a natural at it and I’m excited to see how you do at your next regional!

    It’s a good switch for you and I don’t hate on any style. You’re more consistent at the foul line throwing it with two hands. It looks more natural, and you’re not having swing issues now. Kudos, I know you’re gonna kill it man!

    im 53 a one hand no thumb righty started bowling 6 years ago with 1 hand thumb in and could not get it to hook had a 125avg took my thumb out avg went up almost 50 pins in 5 years even after having a quadruple bypass. but im not really getting any better maybe more consistent but its battle of the balls on the old wood lanes. one night a week and two tourneys a year. but im having fun.

    I'm currently in highschool and bowl for my team. I am mainly a 1 hander but have been trying out 2 handed for a little. It seems like 2 handed is easier at the start with faster revs and more power, but it seems to be harder to be consistent imo. With 1 handing, you wont get the revs immediantly but once you learn how to handle the ball its really nice and I feel more accurate with it. I also think people who are injured/injury prone should probably go 2 handed. There's a big discussion around 2 vs 1 handed bowling but honestly I think its based on the person.

  • @brandontraynum2199

    You’re not throwing anything away. You’re building up on what you already know just with extra tools. I bowled 1 handed for about the same 15 years. A couple 300’s, no 8’s. Made the switch in 2019 and within 3 years. 4 300’s, 3 800’s with an 879 included…. And like you said bowling is just more fun now…. Go for it dude. One thing I will say is take a look at some different layouts for your balls. 2 handed pap’s can get wild. Good luck!

    I just recently plugged a few balls I wasn't using as well and my first two series in league were 556 and 678 and I have to agree that it is a lot more fun. Still got more practice to do with it before I decide to go all in. Good luck to you as well!

  • @JoshCosta

    I did the same thing. Over 10 years of one handed bowling switched. The biggest thing is the approach & doing a gallop. You’ll love the consistency of the feel (thumb feel annoyed the crap out of me).
    You’ll figure out soon if you’re like me that it has its own challenges (near impossible to flatten hand and makes 10 pin spares harder) but it’s definitely worth

    • @220vlogs

      Really? I can flatten my hand pretty well and can make a reactive ball go basically dead straight

    • @JoshCosta
      @JoshCosta 2 года назад

      @@220vlogs well there you go then; imo it’s more so harder to do as a two hander. I had to get a spare ball and still flattening my hand wasn’t enough on the burn: it’s more of a backup ball ‘feel’
      But if u got it quick two hands then nice. I think you will be a monster improve overall 💪🏻

    This video popped up in my list of suggested videos and, I have to say, I'm reconsidering the switch. Pretty much for the same reasons you gave. I'm just worried that my ball speed will take a dramatic dive but, I also understand that it'll take time and practice to get it back up to where I'm at now (about 16.5-17 mph one handed). Best of luck to you in the regional tournament!

    I can throw both styles very well and I already have 450 rev rate one handed and 2 handed is just(as you said)fun to see all of the mayhem with the pins. I really learned to 2 hand when I broke my shoulder and I couldn't handle the weight of my ball until a few months ago and its honesty great to be versatile like that for different conditions

    Yeah ! We could make the same analogy to Tennis One vs Two Handed Backhand. Prior to 1970s it was ALL one handed but then slowly players like Jimmy Connors, Bjorn Borg, Chris Evert ( women ) demonstrated how good it was. Now 50 years later, a two handed backhand is the norm.
    You are very skilled bowler and the transition is probably easier for you. But it is inspiring to see that you want to improve and believe that two-handed is the way ( duh watch Belmo, Simo etc). I have had problems with thumb grip and losing control forever and I stopped bowling because of it. When I ( as a Senior bowler ) start again, it will be two handed for sure ! Thanks !!!

    Bowled two handed up until middle school and only chose a hand(left) because it was not allowed at that time. Now that I’m 30, I’ve decided to do this before heading into the summer league. I just bowled in league. Averaged 210 for 4 games. Lost to a complete one handed newbie who just started bowling. He didn't make 50% of his spares but all his shots were crazy powerful that there weren't a lot of chance to leave pins.
    2 options in my opinion.
    1. Complain and whine about 2 handed bowling and force a ban. (Not happening)
    2. Change to 2 handed bowling which is what I am considering.
    Thanks for the video. You gave me confidence to move on. No point sticking to a style that is clearly a disadvantage.

    I love 2 handed, I made the switch after some wrist pain over the course of 4 years. In fact I can't stand even throwing it 1 handed at all any more, its not fun, dealing with thumbs is a pain in the ass. I'm glad I still have 1 handed as a option in case the lanes are too dry for the rpms generated though. Its come in clutch having both. You'll find out what I mean when you start hitting the double burn.

    I’ve only been bowling for 2 years I picked it up really late. I started as a 2 handed went to 1 hand back to 2 hand back to 1 hand. I found my answer in having a half of thumb like Tom Smallwood. I watch these kids try 2 hands and 1 they don’t have the body strength or they can’t flick there fingers enough. The thing they don’t tell you if you want more ravs you have to almost snap your fingers thro the release. I have high revolutions either way. Because I don’t break my wrist at the bottom of the swing and I feel more comfortable that way. Do what’s comfortable to you not the new in thing!

  • @JasonDias
    @JasonDias 2 года назад +1

    If you're really going to take it seriously you should layout the ball for a 2H. From my understanding, just by plugging the thumb hole on a ball that has a 1H layout essentially makes it a pin down ball for a 2h. The center of grip for a 1H is between the fingers and the thumb, but for a 2H its the middle of the bridge.

  • @KaiTakApproach
    @KaiTakApproach 2 года назад

    The wildcard factor is whether you will play looser because you are 'just trying out' two-handed at your next competition. So you have the two-handed factor and the 'this doesn't really count' factor, which could be a force multiplier. If you approach it thay way then yeah, you should end up having more fun.

    A few weeks back, I went to a tougher bowling alley for me [averaged 190ish at a tourney on house shot there] and bowled two games
    1st game: went 199 one handed
    2nd game: had a 50ish in the 4th and went two-handed, going back 7 for 220, with so much wiggle room
    I see it as both one handers and two handers have specific benefits to their game

    Recently tried one handed bowling again with an actual hooking ball. I only shoot one handed for spares. I figured I wouldn't have much issue, but it's actully really hard with the whole thumb release to get the ball to hook. I have a lot more respect for one handed bowlers as two handed isn't really that hard to learn.

  • @bombercomfort

    Like I mentioned on your 2 hand is easy video. This is a good decision!! You will be awesome 2 hands. How did you find being able to control the rev rate? I struggled so bad and continue to do so as you start so far left and no actual room to go as lanes break down. I see you already are lofting huge. One part of this for me was I cant get fast ball speed. I can't get to 20 mph+ like the pros can which tames out the huge hook from the revs so you have room to move left as it drys up

    Have you checked your pap ? Drillings are much different for thumb and no thumb balls because of diff numbers changing because no weight taken out from the core. Those balls have almost no diff in them and why they are not really hooking right if I had to guess just by where your fingers are in relation to the MB of the ball itself.

    • @joshg218
      @joshg218 2 года назад

      If you want to drill your stuff right use 2LS. Start with a 5in pin to center of grip; 0-1 = very little boom 5-6 =big boom. Anything 0-2 is more or less making the ball not change much direction.
      You'd def benefit from joining Luke Rosdahl's Patreon and discord because you can get a ton of info and help from great people to help make this transition.

    Your score is your score. A strike is a strike. An X is an X (strike) just like a / is a / (spare). no matter how you throw the ball, the machine doesn't know how you got that strike. Everyone still has to remember though..... your scores will go up..... but so will everyone else's. Competition gets more fierce and you still have to make good shots. You will still go thru the nose, leave a ringing ten, etc. etc. etc. I was 189 with my thumb in the ball. I've been 2 handed bowling for almost 30 years now.... been ridiculed and made fun of. I'm kicking their asses though and my scores have gained respect over the years because when the league sheets come out, its my name at the top of "last weeks high sets and scores" and "season high sets and scores". It's a good idea. Your years of one handed bowling will inform your two handed accuracy. And if you hate it and change your mind, you can always go back to one. There's really no reason not to try. Give it a try.

    WOAH pitches are still important for two handed for comfortability and release mechanics. Don't disregard pitches at all.

    If 2 handed bowling is the future of the bowling, I would love to learn 1 hand first as I will be part of the history. I am a beginner to serious bowling and I just think 1 hand is a very cool performance. I also appreciate 2 hand more once I understand how 1 hand works. I do understand this is not result oriented, just my 2 cents.

    The reason for YOU to switch to two-handed is because when you bowl two-handed your overall mechanics and ball roll are vastly superior to your one handed release.
    And you are very strong and athletic which makes two-handed not as stressful as it would be for smaller players.
    I also highly recommend watching Storm's training video on Two-Handed layouts.
    They invented a whole new system of laying out balls for Two-handed as the standard dual angle system is ineffective in getting proper ball roll and performance for the Two-Handed release.

      Really? At the shop I work at, I actually charge less, since it's one less hole. Sure, laying out is a bit longer, but it's still one less hole.

    Yep, if you keep showing this one-handed to two-handed series, I’m going to follow. I’m in a similar situation, though my average is only 210 or so on a house, and 195 on sport. I’m much older than you, but still in good shape, so I feel I can go two-handed, but, whenever I try it, it’s laughable. 😀

    Hey 220! I think if you can do it accurately enough, it's a "no brainer"! You have the ability to do it but remember EVERYONE is bowling 2 handed these days so finding different hand positions and making adjustments on the fly will be a huge key in the tournaments! Good luck bro! 👍 (spares win 🏆)
