    I am bowling for 25 years, i am a certified coach/trainer on ETBF level 2
    I started to try 2 handed 3 years ago, in 2019, because like you said, modern play requires a lot more revs, and as a 1 hander my revrate is about 300-350. As a 2 hander my revrate went up to 500-550. I have done this for 2,5 years, and even though my strikes were beautifull to watch, i had so much trouble with consistancy. I was practicing for 16-20 hours a week, but i just couldn't stay consistant. Now on my house shots this was no problem for my strike throws, because i had a lot of room of margin, but since i play tournaments as well, i saw my average drop 10 points (5 = max per year) in 2 year.
    I also had a lot of trouble with my spares on right side of the lane with my spareball, what also caused my lower scoring.
    On a good night, i hardly was making any spares, and i could shot 250 average. But i also had nights with 130 average over 3 games, because i simply couldn't make my spares, and my strikes were going through the nose a lot, leaving hard to make spares to begin with. It was all or nothing it seemed.
    I changed back to 1 handed last season, and i am glad i did, my average went back up (bij 13 pins). I threw 6 tournaments, of which in 5 i made it to the finals. My spares are on point, and i have been keeping track of my spares, and out of 74 games, i have had only 5 spares missed, not counting the splits

      As someone who recently switched that has been my biggest problem. My consistency is not as good as it was 1 handed. I can bowl a 220 game 1, 216 game 2, and 118 game 3. I would rarely bowl under 160-170 1 handed. I'm sure with time I will get more consistent since I only been 2 handed for a month now, but 100 pin difference hurts. LOL

    Old guy here. Grew up one handed. Came back to the game recently although I have been paying attention to the changes over the years. Struggle with strike percentage. In the pocket plenty but single pin leaves and a 55 percent strike percentage add up to a lot of grind days. Messed around with two handed or thumb out one handed like TD and, on a house shot can spray it around and carry stupid hits. But, on tough shots I do better than on house because it makes more sense to what I grew up on. On my third re-fit in the last year and a half since returning to the game and now have it where I can throw ten games and my thumb has no issues.. that's a first. That plus a Pro Shop guy who knows layouts has helped me up the rev rate.. even for an old guy who still insists on throwing 16 because it does hit harder. I get plenty of ball motion one handed and can barely keep the ball on the lane thumbless because I become rev dominant without the thumb and can't quite get the speed high enough to counteract that and I don't want to drop down to 14 to make that happen. Can't imagine what would happen if I threw 14 and suddenly ran in to old heavy pins like we used to have to knock down. Today's game, being what it is, favors high revs but I am going to stick, stubbornly, to one handed.

    I’ve been bowing 2 handed for a while now and the reason it’s easier is because you don’t have to force your hand to stay under the ball as much as you would 1 hand. Also if you don’t much strength, that extra hand is a great help.

    I always tell anyone (older than 13 anyways) to start one handed and figure out the mechanics and then determine if two handed will work better. You definitely figure out the fundamentals better when going one handed vs two. I started one handed but switched in the spring for 2 reasons: I was tired of fighting the thumb hole and throwing two handed believe it or not was easier on my back (low back issues). I do find it harder to be accurate two handed vs one, my spare game suffered greatly when I first switched. It’s near impossible to get the ball rolling forward, even spare balls will hook if you don’t flatten your hand properly.
    I do have 2 kids (4&6) and I got them both throwing two handed. It’s very easy for them to do seeing that even the 6# ball is 1/5 their body weight lol!

  • @WoodrowBoudreaux
    @WoodrowBoudreaux 2 года назад +2

    2 handed is not 'easier' than 1 handed. EASY is a subjective term. Objectively, 2 handed produces faster results for the new and unskilled bowler, but over time, 2 handed is just as hard as 1 handed. As others pointed out the spare game is more difficult for 2H because of the challenge of flattening the hand out to roll the ball straight without hook. 1H has the thumb and fit issues as well as the challenge of playing deeper in the lane with less revs. So each style has its pros and cons. I wonder though....over time, will the 2H'ers be able to last as long on the lanes as the 1H'er? The twisting of the core and spine is bound to take it's toll on the body faster with the 2H'ers. Who knows, only time will tell.

  • @clowny2396
    @clowny2396 2 года назад

    I tend to agree with you and I'm old. I went for lessons for a year or so when I retired. I learned quite a bit and started using my engineering skills to improve my game. I didn't know much about reactive resin converstocks and knew nothing about cores. The main thing I learned from the lessons was to understand that I was working way too hard to bowl. I was throwing the ball way too fast and I was trying too hard to make the ball hook. I recognized that ball fit was something I learned about on my own, too. Fit can help a one hander quite a bit to relax their hand and get the ball into a roll. A pendulum type swing can allow gravity to do most of the work to get a more or less consistent ball speed. Getting to know your arsenal helps tons and learning about ball maintenance plays a pretty role as well. These days I usually can switch from one ball to another and have pretty good confidence where I should stand and target to get better ball action as the session moves on. When I was much younger with my Black Beauty ball, I didn't think like I do now while I bowled. I just got up there and chucked it down the lane and some decent scores a lot of the time. Having fun bowling in a senior league now... :) :)

  • @jonathanschmidt7147
    @jonathanschmidt7147 2 года назад

    Each have pros and cons, one handers can keep there head down pointed down lane in a more stable position and can get easy speed due to the high pack swing pendulum, but have to work at generating revs. Two handers can immediately get the revs, but that isn’t everything. Your using way more spine tilt which creates another variable, less head stability (unless you work at it like anything), and you can’t have as high of a backswing or else your head will be pointed at the floor. I could go on but you get the point. If you really think two handed it better or more optimal or give you a competitive price edge, you would have already made the switch and so would most of the pros making a living on the sport.

    People who have trouble getting the thumb out.. drill the thumb hole like you do the finger tip. Just to the first knuckle. That's how I drilled my last to balls it was like have no thumb but with control. My revs increased alot compared to my thumb being all the way in. The bigger span between fingers hole and thumb hole took about a game and half to get use to. But it's worth it.

    I agree with your statement that 2 handed is easier to start with. I do think it is harder to get better with 1 hand aswell as we are not in a powerful position when we start. I personally have a Rev rate of 480ish with 1 hand and I've tried to make the switch but body just doesn't move that way. So if I could make my body move that way I would be bowling two hands aswell.

Im new to bowling and it took me about a full year to learn to hook the ball one handed. Somedays I would get pissed it wasn't hooking and threw a few two handed and the ball hooked a made a nice motion down lane. To get the same revs as a one hander you needs years of practice. And, as you say, your hand is naturally more under the ball and for longer.

    From the standpoint of the modern game. If i was going to coach someone and teach them how to bowl I would teach them 2 handed. You still need to have proper release. In my area I bowl like Daugherty (1 handed no thumb) the 2 handers here are "spin biscuits". Due to a thumb injury I have changed from bowling with a thumb to not using a thumb. I developed a game that was decent 1 handed (with a thumb). I have developed a "pro release" when it comes to the release.

  • @tismanasou

    The most different and difficult part is the thumb itself and keeping your fit perfect. The feeling of the thumb is a must for being consistent. The fact that this just disappears when playing 2 handed is ridiculous.

    I would say it's more difficult to get ball speed up on 2-handed which can make bowling on dry lanes more difficult. However as I have developed my 2handed game, to compensate for my low speed (13-14mph if my local alley is to be believed), I have experimented with different hand positions to adjust the way the ball spins to either go straighter or hook more if needed down lane. Something I could never figure out bowling 1 handed.

    I genuinely believe that having done both for some time, there are strengths and weaknesses to both. I think with a player like your experience, it would be significantly easier for you because you have your fundamentals down pat. I don’t. So when I throw one handed, I get wayyy more accurate and consistent but less hooking. I play two handed, I can hook the lane better, but my revs are still around 300 and I’m inconsistent as hell.

    These conversations always seem to focus on ball motion alone as the key metric for two handed making the game easy.
    It is absolutely easier to create ball motion two handed, so much so that it requires a great deal of skill to create less when needed.
    Ball motion isn’t the only deciding factor in making the game easy or hard; if it was Norm Duke or Francois Lavoie would never be able to beat Svensson, Belmonte, Simonsen, Palermaa, but they have and it’s because bowling is hard and they (everyone I just listed) are amazing at this game.
    Proper roll and release one handed is very hard. Proper roll and ball motion two handed is also hard; most who do it, don’t do the way the pros do.
    While true that anyone can use two hands and create great ball motion, I’d challenge anyone who thinks it’s easy mode to try it for a league season. Try it for a 4 - 8 game block in a tournament. It’s extremely hard to be consistent and it’s hard on your body to do it well. Sure you’ll get strikes but you’re not stringing them unless you’re a good bowler.
    The main takeaway here is that anyone who is able to be consistent and use their approach to the game to achieve 220+ averages have accomplished something amazing.

I started out as one handed bowler and was much more consistent to begin with, once I switched to two handed, it has taken me countless hours of practice and working on my release and form to get to the level of consistency I had with one-handed, so I don’t necessarily agree that it is easier overall

    I couldn't agree more. I could not even hook the ball for over a year, when I bowl two handed it hooks like crazy. You have less to refine perhaps then one handed. You already have high revs so that aspect of the release is one less thing. You can then focus on everything else needed to bowl good. And for one handed bowlers the thumb is a big obstacle to overcome, and its completely irrelevant when 2-handed.

    I just had to switch to 2 handed because of issues with the tendon in my thumb. 2 handed bowling is by far easier. The hardest thing with 1 handed bowling is clearing your thumb and you don't have to worry about that. You don't have to worry about grabbing and a lot of other things. I love not having thumb issues/pain.

I have a rhino drilled fingertips and the only way i hook it 1 handed is if im just standing there and drop the ball lol. I know you're not supposed to squeeze but if i don't squeeze my ball is falling out of my hand on my backswing (happened 2x lol...)

    One thing I will say about two handed (I try to be somewhat of a hybrid) but only bowl one handed in leagues - is that two handed at least for me feels a little more physically demanding. I try to get my ball speed up and after a game I’m winded. I guess it could be my form being improper or something of that nature, but after a session of two handed bowling my quads and glutes are angry, lol. But I do agree with all of the points you made. I started a little over a year ago and when I threw the ball two handed with a low flaring ball like the twist, I had so much room for error even throwing the ball like shit..I was still probably at 375-400 RPM and the ball would almost always come back. It does require time and effort to perfect as with anything else, but you’re likely to achieve your goals so much faster bowling two handed. My body unfortunately, just isn’t conditioned for it I guess.

    For beginners and “house shot heroes” the answer to easier is yes. For people who are bowling on challenge and sport patterns on the regular, I would strongly disagree. A guy I bowled with just spent 5 years trying to bowl two handed but after spending a few years on sport leagues and not being able to compete has now gone back to one handed and is throwing with far better consistency. All those revs and all that pin carry is only good when you can hit the pocket. Although there can sometimes be a bigger pocket for two handers, there can also be a lot more trouble with the small miss.

    I think one handed is easier to become better and consistent quicker since you can play very old school fundamental based throwing up 10 all day since all you really have to worry about is getting your thumb out and hitting that simple mark. 2 hands is much easier for sure to have more power and revs but some people starting out 2 handed struggle with that

    I wouldn't say it is easier to bowl. I would say it is easier to hook the ball and get a higher rev rate. It is hard either way. You have to perfect it to be good. The hard part of bowling two-handed is the athleticism to bowl two-handed, and creating enough speed to get the ball down the lane. Consistency is hard either way. Takes skill and practice to be good.

    This is absolutely 100% true, and thank you for saying it. People who start bowling at age 2 and have to use 2 hands then just never change, that’s fine I can understand that (even though I started at age 2 and never did that). But people who start later and consciously choose to be 2 handers just to take a shortcut to good ball roll, that’s what I have a problem with. Whether this is accurate or not, by default I just assume all of those people just can’t be bothered to work hard at getting better and somehow think they deserve to be successful for no reason. Maybe I’m just cynical.

My friend went from 2 handed to 1 handed and had just as much revs and speed in about 2 months of practice (probably less). He can hook the lane just as much as I can with my 2 hands.
