    I think cover letters are stupid, and I find irony us potential employees have to do all these professional steps, and the companies don't have the decency to follow back with us on why we were not hired/chosen for an interview.

      That's an interesting perspective. Thanks for sharing - something really interesting to think about! And I agree - more employers should get back to those who apply for positions with them - especially those who go out of their way to write a cover letter.

    Real Reasons:
    1. Economy is REALLY bad
    2. Salary is too high (Even though you match expectations)
    3. Not enough experience
    4. Appearance wasn't attractive or professional enough (You will be surprised on this one...Dress to impress or else)

Nowadayas you must look like a fucking businessman and to impress on the interview. WAIT! It is the interview that causes so much not hired people with no jobs UNEMPLOYED! Remove forbid interviews and i guarantee you a lot of people will get jobs.

Yet they will not change the laws so people who do not look like pop stars can work or so the tax codes & laws reflect reality.

    I think the hiring process is dumb. Ppl fluff and know what employers want to hear and see.. not knowing that same employee will do cocaine every weekend and smoke weed. And employers want. An 18 year old to have 20 years of experience in the job. Employers want exact key words in resumes and during the interviews instead of just listening and picking up on vibes from people. I’m a veteran and I refuse to lie and pump up my resume to look good. I want a job whose going to take me for the honest hardworking person I am, and not hire me because I said keywords on his or her checklist during the interview. The process needs an overhaul ASAP

    The one thing that breaks my heart is not getting responses and being ignored. My parents generation they always received a letter saying thank you but we went with someone else. Some jobs even gave pointers on what you can do better in the next interview! One I have a higher position in my career, I'll make it my duty to treat the people applying for jobs with some humility.

    • @jesspascale
      @jesspascale 5 лет назад

      It's a sad situation, I follow up around 2 times after they say they'll get back to me after an interview. HOWEVER, just because the employer doesn't have common courtesy doesn't mean you shouldn't either. And if other candidates are sending thank you notes and following up and you're not you look less interested and are at a disadvantage

  • @atlascinemascc8191

    I'm not even getting interviews. Not enough "work experience in my field", fresh out of school, they want people with more experience and more "fitting for the job". How do you gain experience professionally when you've been in school for 4 years?! This job market is so backwards! It's all about who you know.
    P.S. I've applied to over 60 jobs.

    It always confuses me when the hiring manager talks for 30 minutes and then asks me if I have questions. Of course I don't! You already answered them all. What am I supposed to do in that situation? Ask something I already know the answer to just to ask something? I really don't know.

    • @marinebiogeo
      @marinebiogeo 6 лет назад +7

      aeofaiosda You should always have around 2-3 questions prepared for the interview. Not asking questions in an interview usually shows that you haven’t put enough thought into the organization, and as a result, you are automatically less likely to be hired for a role. My rule of thumb is to ask the following types of questions: 1. A question involving a technical aspect of the job (Example: Will I receive paid SVOP (small vessel operator proficiency) training or will I need to pay for this training myself?); 2. A question involving a behavioural aspect of the company/organization (Examples: What do you like most about working for this company? What are some of the challenges that one might face in this position?); 3. When can I expect to hear back from you? Try this method out. It really works!

      in my interview I asked them what skills or experience they believe I'm missing and would therefore make me a better first for the job, then if they do say something you can counter it and give an example of a time you demonstrated that skill.

    The problem with getting a job today is HR....years ago the supervisors of departments made the hiring decisions, and this makes 100% perfect sense.
    If you are an expert at what you do, and are in charge of other people performing the task you are an expert at, it stands to reason that you are the most qualified person to make a decision on someone's capabilities of performing the job that needs filling.
    In today's job market however, HR people, who have never performed the job they are hiring someone for, and who don't have a clue how to do the job, make decisions based upon someone's appearance, or what a resume cover letter looks like, which doesn't have anything to do with a persons ability to do the job.
    So they hire the person they think "looks" like they can do the job, and pass over the person who is "skilled" at the job. As a result the company ends up with a revolving door.

    • @sucram1015
      @sucram1015 5 лет назад +1

      Agreed, plus every job doesn't need work experience to do it. Examples: dishwasher, housekeeper, cashier, stocker and etc. Those jobs I listed you already do or have knowledge of how to do it. Why do I need 2-5 years of being in those positions when I pretty much already do it at home or have learned how to do some in school. I don't need 5 years of job experience to do Dishwasher or Housekeeper. You already do that at home.

    I'm new here in the state of Florida after living for 45 years in Massachusetts. I have more than 25 years of receptionist, administrative assistants, and office supporter. No matter what kind of company or Law firm or organization I was always able to be a great receptionist, administrative assistants, and office supporter. here in Florida I go to my interview they are impressed they love all the skills I provide and yet I'm rejected because I do not drive. I don't apply for jobs that asked for driver's license or someone with a perfect driving record. But there are some jobs that require a good receptionist or legal assistant and they don't mention anything about driving. Don't get me wrong I'm ok with the rejection. Because I know not being a driver doesn't mean I don't qualify 😁

    I am sick and tired of doing all kind of method in order to get a job and still fail to get one. I Hate it when i had to give application/resume just so to remind them that am actually enjoy this job, prove to them that I am very interest and they still don't see it(like they cover they eye and pretend nothing happen), and after all this effect, sending cover letter, thank you letter, resume, go through interview, leaving a good impress, and i still don't receive any word from them(by phone and in person) This isn't the first time that is happen to me(and of course, it nothing for everybody), it been like this for 4 years and am still unemployed. I know it sound a kid talking (which is not) and i know my grammar aren't top class, but am just sick and tired doing the same thing over again. it driven me insane, up to the point where am having suicide though.

    I enjoy watching your videos and one thing I'd like to mention is that I talk a lot when I get "comfortable" during interviews. When do you know when enough is enough? I never want to feel like I'm wasting a potential employer's time (cause of their busy schedules/other interviews) but if I don't say enough I feel, just like you mentioned, that they'll think I'm not interested or as engaged as they would like me to be. I think that plays with my head a little bit, that and how you present yourself vocally and physically at the interview. Do you sound like a person who should work at so and so? Does your body language reflect you in a positive way? At the same time, I want to be genuine without sounding too rehearsed. Maybe that can be a topic for another video. 🤔

    I am concerned about the experience that entry level jobs require now. I am graduating in May with a B.S. in business with a focus in buying and planning and product development. I have started the job hunt and I am finding that most jobs even though they are labeled as entry level have 3-5 years of experience in buying under the job requirements section of the job listing. I have experience and internships just not specifically in buying. How can a recent grad overcome this and convince someone to give them a chance?

    What if the Job your applying for has nothing to do with the experience you have/ if you have no experience whatsoever?

    Good advice, Lauren! Always ask upwards of 20 questions during the interview though. This is your future, and the building where you'll be spending 8-12 hours a day 5-7 days a week for many years to come (hopefully). You want to know everything about the company, the environment, and the position. Pump the interviewer full of questions. Let your questions breed questions. This isn't only an interview for you, it's a chance to interview them as well. You want to make sure that you're accepting a position in Utopia, and not The 9th Circle Of Hell. No one wants to wind up locked in a bathroom stall dreaming of ways to set the building on fire.This is your future. Own it. Interviews should never take less than 45 minutes. Question. Question. Question. Always close an interview by asking, "When do I start?" So many interviewers have blinked in surprise and told me that no one had ever asked that before. Tragic!! Anyhoo.. Great vid Lauren! Thank you!

    I believe some reasons are not obvious at all, unknown, or beyond our control. I dress up professionally and typically interact with the employees and the hiring manager before and during the interview. It seems like the thank you note and cover letters may be overrated, even though I still continue to send them (to express genuine interest). So far, thank you notes have not worked effectively for me yet. An HR professional told me that recruiters usually don't read the cover letters. She even advised not to include them. I think I would still include it in certain situations though.

    Unfortunately everything you said was false in my case. Also, if someone is quiet, ask a question? That's actually what interviews are for. One person asks questions, the other answers to give you an indication of whether he/she is an ideal candidate. If you don't ask questions that provoke the required response, you weren't prepared for the interview. If you want someone to talk, you can also say you saw their CV or portfolio, but want to know more about them, that they should elaborate on their interest and suitability for the job. At the end of the interview the guest can usually ask questions, but until then you have to let him or her know what information you need. Of course if the person is just vague and answers with three or four words then it's not your fault though. The REAL reason you don't get hired? People invite you for interviews and ask stupid questions, not like "Do you prefer chicken or pork?", but questions that doesn't give them the information they required, such as "Do you live with your parents or on your own?", "Do you live alone or with a partner?", "Any kids?", "How much money did you earn before coming here?" If you want to know whether someone will be loyal and stick around for a long period, ask that instead. If you want to know whether someone needs a certain income, ask them what an ideal income would be and negotiate it or just say what you are offering. I've been to interviews, well prepared, everything in order and organized, got there 15-20 minutes ahead of schedule, because I drove there the day before to be sure I know how to get there, dressed in suit trousers, formal shoes, buttoned shirt with a tie, well groomed, neat and customized CV with consistency and all relative information. The funny part is that I was an ideal candidate, but just too young or probably not someone who would be a great "buddy" at the office. I noticed that my younger sister gets hired with no qualifications, no experience, poor introduction and a much less professional personality. She doesn't even have to dress neatly, doesn't need to know the first thing about the company or the line of work. Interview? Nah, she can start on Monday. Bottom line, you don't get hired because employers value things that shouldn't matter and have gender biases as well as age biases. If they are willing to employ a male, they tend to look for men who are married and who possibly have kids, because it symbolizes loyalty and a responsibility which he can't just walk away from. It's not like married men cheat or get divorced, right? Most importantly, the interview process is somewhat flawed. The right questions need to be asked, because the candidate only has that ONE opportunity to let you know what you need to. I was at a design company who advertised that they were looking for school children during holidays. A women in her 50's asked two little girls how much knowledge and experience they have regarding printing. I was never more perplexed in my life. Both said "None". (Maybe because they haven't studied design for three years and haven't worked in a copy shop either?) This is an honest opinion from an unemployed guy who is willing to work his socks off for someone who would simply give him a chance. Young people learn quickly, have a lot of energy and know they need to start at the bottom, they'll make you coffee five times a day and wipe your shoes clean if needed (with a smile). You also pay them less and get to mold them into the kind of employees you value. They don't have a wife, expensive mistresses and thirty kids, but they know unemployment is hateful and will appreciate the kind person who acknowledges their existence and need for experience. Loyalty is a trait, not a skill you learn twenty years before retirement.

    omg. i have had the same job for 31 years and now i am thinking about a different career field. i know this is a very simple video, but it is 100% accurate. you young un's take note. don't be a timid applicant. then THEM in the interview why you should be hired. i don't know who the girl in this video is, but she should be a true inspiration to all who seek employment.

Now a days you rarely get the hiring manager's contact information to forward any kind of notes, I have yet to seen this practice really pan out.

      Again, why can't both of our lives be better when you offer me the job? I say that because you're asking me what I can do for your company (at 2:49), but I have to know what you going to do for me also as your employee also... remember interviewing is a two-way street to see if the job is a good fit for me, and if I'm going to be a good fit for your company.

      Personally, I think an email is like... blah.. A handwritten card means you actually took the time to FIND the perfect card and the employer can keep it on their desk if they so desire to remember you. That's just my opinion.
