Great video. As a South African fan the Ireland selective discipline infractions are really frustrating to watch, but have to give credit to them. Would be interesting to compare this analysis with the 2010-2015 All blacks era. Both teams would concede a kickable penalty rather than trying to defend sustained attack and possibly concede the try. I think it important to note that a lot more teams have been opting for the corner rather than talking the 3 this year. That might factor into your calculations where teams might first take a stab at the corner, Ireland has had a good maul defense this year so they might have repelled a couple of scoring opportunities with this tactic, and then going for the 3 or loosing the points all together. These tactics are part of what made Richie McCaw one of the greatest ever
Thanks for putting in the effort to run the numbers! The discipline in the last few games has been worrying, but I'm hoping it's a mix of world cup hangover and post-sexton blues. Hopefully we see them get a handle on it against fiji and Australia anyway!
I love a bit of stats breakdown, keep 'em coming! 🙂I have to admit, I was a bit surprised to see that 2024 had one of the lowest total penalty counts (so far), but the average per game was sadly a bit more telling. Thankfully their discipline seemed much improved against (an admittedly very poor) Fiji.
I remember when the abs form started to drop away. A little less talent, a few bad selections here and there, some knuckle head coach (foster) swapping guys outta position and keeping guys with no right to be in the team and then boom, a game here , a game there, generally lower standards, fast forward and 8 years or two rugby cycles ahve passed an only now do they look like they have some kind of direction again. I hope ireland gets onto it quickly and stops the rot because you can drop way down if you dont keep it up.

I really admire the dedication here 😂
