The aquarium reactor is a highly useful piece of equipment in the aquarium hobby. This is how to build one!!
There are many types of reactors, including; carbon reactors, phosphate reactors, bio-pellet reactors, nitrate reactors, GFO reactors, calcium reactors and many more.
Supplies:
1/2" CPVC (about a foot)
(3) 1/2" CPVC couplings
1/2" end CPVC cap
A glass pasta holder(use what you can find/need)
Knitting mesh
30PPI sponge
micro bulk heads : (CARLON Item 3623-662 Model LQTCS-050) Животные
I always go back to these old build videos. So much detail and easy to follow
Your editing skills have gotten so much better Joey, keep it up. Also I wish you the best in your recovery.
One of the best videos referencing the subject. This is a great way to increase filtration and do it on a budget. Thank you for the video!!!👍🏽👏🏽
Hey Joey!
Hope you are feeling better, you look great..thanks for another perfect dyi project to keep our aquarium cleaner!!!!
I really appreciate your DIY videos! I like that you start out with all the materials and approximate cost of them. You also break it down to very simple terms for those who may not be DIY inclined... I'm going to start designing the setup for my upgrade... need to start COLLECTING all the parts and pieces... AND, I will definitely come back to your pages to get some more great ideas! Yes, I did subscribe!!!
You are the man, not really talking about this video but all of them!!! You hit on all points of a process for people that don't usually diy but go fast enough so that I don't get frustrated when your explaning things that are obvious to me. Thanks man and keep it up.
thanks , I have build 3 of them for my sea aquarium above my sump!works awesome!!
I love your DIY videos. They have been very helpful. I made an algae scrubber by your video, 2 days later my nits were almost 0. Now I am going to make your reactor. Thank you so much for your videos.
Great video. Thanks. One question though.. I've recently purchased some RowaPhos and wondering where would be best to stick it in this kind of reactor? Can it be thrown in beneath the lower filter where the inlet pipe ends? (The filter and mesh would keep the Rowaphos down, yet allow the water to flow through it, right?) Again, Brilliant video. Very helpful. Thanks.
Thank you for this video !
May I ask though, can I use this reactor to grow microalgae instead ?
this helped me a lot building my co2 reactor. thanks joey!
Those conduit fittings are a slick option! Never thought of using those! Well done Sir!
Great work ., build my first stand watching your DYI. wanted to know if I could use a old Ro unit tank for a reactor. and just put a carbon cartridge in it. it's spare parts I had felt off the walk a d membrane and one tank broke. so I got a new one now I have 2 spare canisters
Wow you've come a long way man, 950,000 subs now, love it. Fav youtuber!
Your videos are always great. I hope I can order your book soon! Michael.
I look forward to your 100k special.. ;) 100k is just around the corner!!
Hey joey I was wondering could this idea be converted into an algae reactor for fresh water some how? Thanks!!
hey Joey, thank you for all the good informative videos! I wanted to ask you, can you modify or make a hybrid skimmer/k1 reactor?
Amazing that this is the same dude at least trying to open a private aquarium. Such success and seems he serves it! Thanks!
Would this design work for a nitrate reactor and would I need to go bigger for a 50 gallon aquarium?
Brilliant and simple engineering. Will be doing this. You saved me about 100$!. Thank you. Keep.putting out more content.
Think it is possible to make small reactors or sump for 2 small 10g tanks... using like things or mason type jars?
First off LOVE your videos very helpful and inspiring. I would like to try this project, but am having trouble finding a container like yours. Could you give a link to the one you used or something suitable in size and usability? Thanks
Hi I have a hang on the back filter which I want to use pond matrix or regular matrix
that might not fit the filter can I use this reactor and put the matrix in there to lower my nitrates
Fantastic video, thanks for the how-to. what size would you suggest for a 300-400 gallon propagation system?
just thinking ,,, can i try to install co2 hose in canister so that the co2 bubbles will start from canister and will go through tha tank. will it work same as this DIY reactor of yours?
I was wondering if you would be able to help me with a few questions i have ? i have a very high Phosphate Lvl in my planted tank! i have well water and it comes out high from the well it self. i wanted to put in a phosphate reactor and was wondering if you thin i could use Zoo Med 501 Turtle Canister Filter as one. it has a flow rate of 80gph and from what i understand the lower the flow rater for this kind of reactor is best> any help you can give well be welcome.! ohh it a 40gal bow front thanks again.
I made something like this for a pre filter. Didn’t know what I was doing but it worked just had no way to clean it. I will make one like yours. Thanks
Would you be able to use a few of these in line as a alternate to a sump?
Great job again Joey, do you think this reactor design would be ok for DE (diatomaceous earth)? From what I am led to believe, you need some proper pressure to force water through DE, Like a vortex or magnum.
Is it possible to miniaturize this to use with a 5 gal nano planted aquarium? I'm having issues with my glass bell diffusers clogging or simply not producing a fine enough bubble to defuse into the water before it breaks the surface. I did try to attach my CO2 line out of my DIY reactor into my outline for my filter return, and... it 'sorta' works but again, I'm seeing too many bubbles going right on up to the surface just outside of the filter return. I have a Fluval V with a modified filter system to cope with some of the 'fun' issues with the tanks design.
Wow great idea. It is so well built it even looks commercially built. Great build and thanks for everything your doing for the hobby.
No problem my friend. Anything i do for the hobby is predicated by the thankfulness i have for all the support i get from my viewers like you. :)
Cool man thank you for this I'm going to make this right away. Also going to make that 375 gallon tank as well good stuff man keep it up
Joey great video! I'm looking for how to make an DIY automatic fish feeder, you have some project?
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS! i tried making my own but it leaked (it's there in the fb group). I asked you on the group for this and you made it! thank you. I would love to try this and am going to have to.
I think i remember that one. Although, i started filming this a few months ago, i only finished it up last week.
Sweet. love you're projects btw. looking forward to the next one.

Sorry to comment on such a old video, but I cannot seem to find information on making a freshwater algae reactor , does no one do that? If they do, what are they using for media?
Nice video! I really like the creativity. You're like the Rimstarorg of aquariums
You spelled macgyver wrong. ;)
Another great DIY
Silly question probably but could you use two types say like carbon and phosphate or possible three types???
Does anyone know if two of these can be linked to use two different types of media?
Another great build! Hope your wound is healing!
It is. Fast too! I was supposed to get one last operation done yesterday, but ended up not needing. Instead, i cam out of the splint and just have something on my hand instead.
great video joey. i am into reef tanks and see a new product on BRS called a roller mat. i was just wondering your thoughts about this filter and if it can be made for a lot less than the $500 price tag? thanks and keep the videos coming.
Can't use a lot of things u show. But this one is right on the money. Thanks for sharing !
Not every project will be right on the money for everyone. But every once in a while, i'll make something that stands out to someone. This was that video for you. ;) Glad you liked it.
Where did you get the foam from/ what type can I use?
It looks like if I build 2 of these connected together I could use them as an alternitive to a canister filter??
Joey,
Can you do a step by step video on a DIY co2 Cerges reactor to use on a canister filter?
I believe this will be this would be a very helpful video for alot of folks.
Thank you for your consideration!
Just impressive on the ideas you get for DIY builds from name brand products. Keep the savings coming bud, Fired Up!!!
The hobby has become so industry controlled and driven... that its no longer "our" hobby. Its what ever "they" want it to be for us. Im glad to be able to shake things up a bit. I will eventually dive into how aquarium products are "marketed"... which is my biggest pet peeve. If and once i do, we will see some real changes get made.
***** I completely agree and bet it would. I'll looking forward to that video, Fired Up!!!
The king of DIY , but joey now a days why we're not seeing any of these good stuffs
Do you see any reason not to make 3 of these and connect them together via hoses. Like a carbon, gfo, and calcium trio
Great video...congrats on 90,000 subs!
Thanks Darius! I was really.....REALLY excited when i saw that. I figured i would wait until 100,000 subs before talking about how GRATEFUL AND THANKFUL i am though. Cant stress that enough. 100,000 is right around the corner though, so i will plan something special.
Now 700,000
Biological Media now 950,000 lol
@@thekingofdiy now 1m 😂
Phenomenal! I just have to watch and like every video you post. I actually built two DIY overflows and the algae scrubber per your instructions and they work like a charm. I did have to add aqualifters to the overflows to make sure they stayed working, I don't know why I couldn't get it work the other way. Nevertheless, keep up the great work Joey!
Thanks Mohammed!
Thanks for the vid! Will definitely put this to use in the future.
Good luck!
Very useful video! Thanks Joey!
Thank you! and your welcome. :)
hi.. this is JIN. I'm rellay interested in your DIY thing..!! UR the KING.!!
i have few questions about the "Aquarium reactor" and "Sand filter(fludised filter) posted on Feb, 8th 2015"
what is the difference between two?
i feel those two look similar.
which one is better for 50G tank?
if you have any idea or recommend the post of your video. plz let me know..!1
thanks..!!^^
Hi. I used a water filter can. But I removed a carbon granules and I replaced with sponge. Is that good idea or not?
Old but gold, thank you
nice, can i use this as filteration system
Has anyone found any containers on Amazon that work for this? I can't seem to find any with a plastic screw-on lid locally or on the internet.
Im going to use this design to attach to my sink for ro when i do my water changes another great diy from tge diy king.
would this reactor work for a fluidized sand filter? thank you in advance and congrats on 500k subscribers
you are such a brilliant guy!! Well done!
Im not so sure about brilliant..... stubborn might be a better word. Or the little engine that could. haha
Thanks for the compliment my friend.
Love you vids bro! excellent work! new Sub!
Ingenuity awesomeness guys. Thanks a lot !
would this design work for a nitrate reactor?
Great Video
Thanks Marcus
nice one...so where can i put in co2??? i think it would work great witch co2 :D
Thanks Joey! I appreciate this video, it forces me to start to think about what I will do. I am working on a 210 gallon project right now so the spaghetti container may not be enough space for my own reactor. I have thought about using PVC but of course you cant see through it and that will leave you always guessing..."i wonder if its working or not". You think I could "hybrid" this idea with your canister filter video and get something good out of that?
Sure you could. But if using for biological filtration, its best to use a dark container... or at least wrap this in something like a garbage bag. (nitrification bacteria prefer the dark)
Would it work good with beo pellets?
Looks great Joey!! I always see reactors but am unsure how one would use one on a freshwater system. or what kind of media would be used or are they just another name for a canister filter?? Or are they more for saltwater?? Thanks for sharing!!
Almost all of them are perfectly fine for freshwater as well. In fact, almost all will be extremely useful as well. The freshwater hobby is dumbed down by the "industry" though, so these are not as common in the freshwater side of things. The types of media used depends on what you are trying to do. Do some research today and you will find out a lot more on them.
thanks Joey
This is great! thks Joey, i was wondering if this might double as a uv steriliser? just hook up a uv lamp instead of media and cover the glass or paint it black and use a small powerhead that gives slow water movement, that would make a great diy for your next build? lol ;)
This might sound so simple it's dumb, but how would I build the gasket? The only canister I could find after my treasure hunt was the large plastic zip tie canisters. After all was said and done I can't get the leaks to stop there's one 2 or 3 threads, I guess it's possible that it can't work. Any help at all would be appreciated
if i using airpump, it will be work? and where should be placed airstone?
kick ass.. i sent you a question a while back about a under gravel filter idea, well you just made my day cuz now i need to find the parts.. im gonna keep my power heads on the under gravel filter, and have them both go thru one of these as a return..this will vastly increase my bio filtration.. thanks joey.. did it again :)
Hey Charles, if i didn't reply, i must have missed it, then it got buried in all the other questions. I do my best to get to everyone, but that would be a full time job if i did! Glad this video helped you out. Thats my only goal.
What is the best method to filter the water.... From top to bottom or the contrary
Still making videos, we have missed you!!!
Hallo thats a perfect co2 Reactor. How can i put the co2 in this Reactor?
Another home run Joey.
Glad you think so. I filmed most of this a few months ago(why i have a cast on in some parts and not others)
It almost didn't make it to video as i got busy with other projects. Figured i'd finish it up anyways since it works great.
Love it ! Love it ! Love it !!!!
Does anyone know where you could possibly find that container??
Great idea as usual. Lots cheaper than buying new! When do you start mass production?
Thanks my man. I'd have horrible business sense if i showed how to build something i wanted to sell. haha
You put your name on the product and it will sell! :)
what powerhead should be good for it ??
Are the carlon micro bulheads 1/2” too??
What types of media do I use in this reactor?
Is this works for simple calcium reactor?
Why people want to waste their money on commercial reactors makes my head spin. This is a great video. Its just foolish to spend money one a reactor at the store when its just a simple thing.
I would like your take on DIY bongs
I've made something similar to this, but I use an internal filter that first filters to mechanical filtration, then biomedia, pumps it into the "reactor", filters through another set of biomedia, then through mechanical filtration again, through activated carbon and zeolite, then back into the aquarium.
Hey man I was wondering.. I have an old canister filter. Could that be used as a reactor for my 300g tank.. And if so what you put in the trays of the canister filter..?
You could slow the flow down and get some use out of it yes. The media will depend on what you want it to do. Research the different reasons for a reactor and see which one you are looking for.
So if you put filter media in this. It's just a badass looking filter?
Hm, looks like this might work with Purigen too, tho I'll have to go for a much finer sponge. I only have a tiny little corner filter in my nano tank with no room left in it to place the Purigen Bag in it, so this might actually be the (cheap) solution I was looking for.
Cheers mate!
Would this work with Purigen?
can this be used as a co2 diffuser?
Why is chaeto turning brown? Who many hours should I run the leds on it?
can this work with pool filtration sand?
I could build this to serve as a secondary external (bio/mechanical) filter, could I? Since my main internal mechanical filter can't handle the waste from my fish and since an upgrade to a bigger/better filter is expensive, this would make for a good secondary, would it?
Sure it would.
Question for you. As I am getting ready to set up a 120 Gallon (4'x2'x2') tank, I am not too nervous on the filtration but slightly concerned. I will be running a Marineland 350 Magnum canister filter (supposively rated for 100 gallons) for the filtration. The tank will be housing my (3-5 inch babies) ornate birchir and fire eel. I will be also getting a larger (around 6-7 inch) Black ghost knife (as I had one the same size as the birchir beforehand, coming to find that the birchir attacked him) as well as a "rhino"/"chocolate" plecostomus (6 inch) and last but not least, (5 inch) Bala/Tricolor Shark.
I was wondering if I can make this same(maybe larger) reactor as a piece of filtration, but instead of media put bio balls or something for nitrifying bacteria to hold on. Instead of a standard pump, use an old protein skimmer attachment pump (so high oxygen will flow through it). You think this will work or am I missing a flaw of some kind.
Ditch the Marineland 350 Magnum canister filter..... they are mechanical filters. Get a proper filter that actually holds biological media. I have a full playlist on filters to give you ideas if you want to build. Then use the 350 for "pollishing" the water if you feel like you still need it.
Brilliant and nice video! New friend!! New subscriber!!! And a big like👍
Would you be able to use this basic design to build an inline algae scrubber?
Just add a cylinder of mesh inside the reactor and UV lights, or a full spectrum (lizard light/heat lamp) on it to promote algae growth. I don't see why it wouldn't work.
The infamous finger cast I am watching an astonishing curiosity and respect of dedication
I build the diy skimmer too, just a lot bigger.works beside my orignal skimmer in the sump
Good informational video man
Thanks my friend. Just seen you reached 6,000 subscribers!?! Thats insane! Congrats on the success. Keep going, the skys the limit!!
***** yes thank you. I just focus on the content and help people. The number is great but knowing people learn from my videos like I do yours is a great feeling.
