DIY Aquarium PVC Overflow [Tutorial] - English subtitle now available [15-1-2022]

- I will be showing you how to build a simple DIY Aquarium overflow just by using PVC pipes. It is not my original design and credit to the actual person who had tough of this idea. I basically did my own modification to make it more sleek and slim to achive a more minimalist design.
This is an alternative method if you are not able to drill any holes in your main tank due to various reason and still want to havea a filteration system using a sump tank.
Remember to glue your PVC pipes once the fitting and size is confirmed and give it a good coat of paint of your own liking to make it look like a professionally build overflow!

in your first example, you cut off the top. That is essential, I am interested in using that round trip system connecting the fish tank to a cooler. If I cut at the top, the water comes into contact with the air and the temperature drops faster.

Bro... I've try mark 4 method on the pail and it works... but when I put in the aquarium it doesn't drain all the way if power cut and have to manual prime.

Yes, the usage of the pvc pipe is to mimic an overflow box. But the right size of the siphon (inner pipes) and outer pipes needs to be right so that water flow is not restricted.
I don’t see the need for double overflow coz your return pump is there to cycle the fixed volume of water… or you could reduce the pump speed. Anyway, great video. Thanks.

@@TheStreamAffair i need help please I wanna make a over flow for a 40 gallon breeder, what pipe do you recommend if I want to drain 400 gall per hour down and pump 530 gph on the return pump?
If ur return pump is 530 gph, then ur overflow needs to be able to drain at least 530 gph or higher, else the overflow won't be able to handle it...the piping used in the video is ANSI (US / UK) standard fitting. The siphon pipe is 15mm and the outer pipe used is 25mm. And for the last design in the video, it is also using the 25mm size. I can't really advice what size to used, maybe you need to do trial and error.

Made this and works perfectly thank you for sharing once again. I have cut the top off like you did. Do you need to keep topping up the water due to potential evaporation now it isn't fully enclosed?
Topping water where? I dont think u need to top up water anywhere. Since the overflow will function all the time. The water in the overflow wont evaporate. The water in ur fish tank will evaporate tho

The pipe may not be fully primed or the size of the pipe is small

U can checkout my other overflow videos . I would recommend the overflow for beginners, its easy to build and flow rate depends on the size of the pipe that you use.

Bro...boleh ke pvc 1/2 inci ganti dgn tubing...sbb 1inch pvc terlalu besar utk aquarium saya
Design yg mana? Yg mark 1-2 ke? Nak pakai tubing utk siphon to blh..tapi tak nampak kemas la..kena pasti jugak saiz pump yg digunakan..klu flow rate pump terlalu tinggi, overflow tak cukup sempat nak sedut keluar air..so kena balance..klu overflow terlalu kecik, susah nanti.
bro, pipe siphon influence flow rate tak? let say sy pakai pipe luar 1.5 inch untuk increase flow rate, pipe siphon better brapa inch?
Sebenarnye kedua-dua influence flow rate..klu pipe siphon besar..tapi outer pipe tak cukup besar..air akan ada rintangan..blh try 3/4" utk siphon pipe klu pipe luar 1.5"..utk diy overflow..memang kena trial and error..kena make sure pump air punya flow rate kurang daripada overflow...
Klu flow rate tak memuaskan, blh try up siphon pipe tu ke 1inch dan tengok ada berbezaan ke tak...

Hi I'm thinking about building the alternative overflow with 1 1/2" pvc with a venturi, do you think it will be able to handle a 6000L /hr pump? thank you!
Should be able too. 1 1/2 " is pretty big size. Yes u need a venturi to suck out any air Bubbles that may get trapped inside. U should check out my other video where i made a transparent version.

Could you please tell me the size of PVC pipe comonent.
The bigger size pipr are 1" and the smaller one are 1/2".
@@TheStreamAffair my pump capacity is 2000L/h. So what size of pipe can i use. PVC D34 and PVC D21 is ok?
You may need to test and see. Because each tank setup is different and may have effect on the flow rate. I cannot really confirm

The inner pipes are 15mm and outer pipes are 25mm.

How would you match the pump flow rate with this? I have a similar siphon out of large 1.25 inch pvc but a slightly different design with a wier.
I find it absolutely impossible to match the pump speed to the overflow speed. The water level for the return pump is either going up or down and I'm constantly adjusting the valves to no avail
For surface overflow, all you need to make sure is the max flow rate of ur overflow is larger than your return pump.
Eg. Return pump is 1000L/H and ur overflow is 1500L/H.
This will mean than your overflow can match ur pump return rate anywhere between 1L/H and 1500L/H. But if your pump is having a flow rate of 1600 L/H, means its not balance and your tank will fill up more water than your overflow can siphon out which will cause the imbalance.

@@TheStreamAffairThanks for replying. It's not a surface overflow. It's a siphon from 1.25" pvc. So the siphon runs at full speed. So the speed of the pump has no impact on the siphon flow rate.
Unlike an overflow whose rate would increase / decrease to reach equilibrium with the pump, the siphon runs at max until it breaks. Hence I'm constantly fiddling with ball valves at the return end trying to match the siphon speed.
My siphon does not use a hangon box. It's a direct siphon from the tank
Maybe u can connect me on Facebook messenger (look for the same name) and share few photos of ur setup. Maybe that would help as I cannot visualised ur setup at this moment.
