One of the biggest chokejobs in sports history. 8-5 with 3 to go up 3 games over the 5-8 chargers, almost mathematically impossible to lose. The broncos didn't only lose, they gave 30 points at least in every game, to the Panthers who were division winners and 30 to Buffalo who started 5-1, were 6-8 going into that game and were still reeling. Then they come into this win-or-go-home scenario in San Diego against a hungry team who had nothing to lose. They not only lost, they didn't even show up! 52 POINTS with a chance to go to the playoffs and HOST a game?! That's an all-time collapse!

Then traded Marshall for draft picks in Miami. Traded Tony Scheffler to Detroit for picks, then traded Peyton Hillis to Cleveland for Brady Quinn and draft picks. No love lost between Rivers, and Cutler at the post-game handshake. Anyway, sucks to see Mike Shanahan's Broncos tenure end like that, but I think Pat Bowlen felt like he was backed into a corner following 3 years of no playoffs, and the way the team in 2008 completely croaked the division away to the Chargers after having a 3 game lead while needing only 1 win to clinch a playoff spot in that stretch. The Chargers on the other hand basically started the playoffs at 4-8, and went on a remarkable 5 game winning crusade which ended against the eventual SB champs Steelers.

This collapse is why the Broncos are in the quagmire that they are in today. It led to McChild, and then Elway (who has been destroying this franchise since Manning left and Bowlen stopped having anything to do with team since his health was declining).

At the beginning of December, the Broncos were 8-5, Chargers were 5-8, 3 weeks left in the regular season. All Denver had to do was win 1 game, and they'd win the division; if San Diego lost, their division title streak ends.
Broncos dropped the next 2 against the Panthers & Bills; Chargers beat the Chiefs & Bucs, making their week 17 matchup for all the marbles. What followed is the video above: the ultimate demise of Mike Shanahan, leading to the downward spiral of Josh McDaniels the following season, the Jay Cutler trade, and a Series of Unfortunate Events that gifted us both Von Miller and Peyton Manning. Had the Broncos won just one game in December of '08, would Shanahan have survived the next season?
    The world may never know.
