      @Cory Burns I love that sentiment. I wish we could live in a world where pigmentation truly has no social bearing or relevant history. Although it is is nearly impossible to pretend like race hasn’t factored into many social and economical realities in America, I’d like to think that we can educate children on the history of racial relevance In America and encourage them to unite with one another regardless of pigmentation without being obnoxious and overly conscious about our nations racial history. There is a healthy balance I think many of us miss.

    • @Sundaydoug278
      @Sundaydoug278 3 года назад +5

      @Cory Burns I think there is an extreme difference between helping perpetuate racist behavior, and helping ppl understand the social, economical, and political effects of racism on society. Although I think Morgan Freeman is a beautiful human... it’s naive to think that simply not discussing something eradicates it. Let’s be real... we will never eradicate it completely. Stereotypes and prejudices are so deeply embedded into our society that it’s infinitely more realistic to educate people on the most moral and equitable way to interact with humans who look differently than they do regardless of how they “feel” about any other given race. Do I think the answer is to shove anti racist rhetoric down our children’s throat... no. But to pretend as if it doesn’t exist is not the answer in my opinion either. There are far fewer overt racists nowadays but racism is more than just “lynching” and “segregation”. Racism has macro and micro forms. The most valuable tool in my opinion is honest, non discriminatory, and clear cut education. When people know better, they typically do better.

    • @Sundaydoug278
      @Sundaydoug278 3 года назад +4

      @Cory Burns false. Macro and micro racism DOES exist lol it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to identify that. Macro racism being extreme conditional bias based on skin color. For example a group of Neo Nazis gathering to promote white supremacy. And micro racism being biases or more minute aggressions based on skin color. That’s just simple logistics lol to ignore that is to completely dismiss the variance of human psychology.
      And as a black man, I believe racism is not a one way street lol it’s common sense. Any one race can be racist toward another by definition.
      Also... to your systemic racism comment, I would agree that the judicial and legislative system has been mostly ironed out to represent a fair commonality for Americans today, however- the remnants of systemic oppression are largely what have inflated prison rates and have had a negative impact on living conditions in the black community which are easily identified even today.
      To your point about Brown vs the Board of education... to insinuate that systemic racism was eradicated in 1954 is to be tone deaf to a large part of our nations history.
      For one... the war on drugs largely targeted black Americans and started in the 1970’s.
      But to the point of my original comment... we don’t need critical race theory lol we don’t need to stuff saturated and discriminatory ideals of hyper sensitivity into our children. But it is imperative that we educate the youth accurately on the racial, and socioeconomic history of our country. Not to become more divisive but to remember. Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it.

    • @Sundaydoug278
      @Sundaydoug278 3 года назад +3

      @Cory Burns I see why you define racism as one distinct term and I can respect that. We both agree that it’s wrong and that the country has come a real long way.

To me having different color skin was no different than having different color hair or eyes. We were just people with our own features and uniqueness. I never thought of any of the other kids as anything beyond their name and being a unique individuals with unique personalities. We were just all kids having fun together and attending the same school. Its only later in life that race even entered my mind as a concept. That experience helped inoculate me against racist beliefs or biases. My later education in psychology helped inoculate me against the biases I do not recognize myself, by being open to criticism, no matter how reasonably certain I am that I am correct (even in a deeply felt moral sense). I always remember Karl Popper's well made point that all our knowledge contains error, and all our knowledge can be potentially improved upon, through falsification and conjecture of incrementally more accurate theories. So even my most deeply held beliefs contain error and must not be shielded from criticism and challenge, no matter how uncomfortable it is to hear differing opinions. Oh, I completely agree that there are huge issues that need to change/improve for black people. I have no disagreement with you there. I've studied socioeconomics, psychology and child psychology...most black children experience huge barriers to overcome as they grow up, and it's tragic. I've worked in many of these communities, and I've noticed (see Malcolm Gladwell, who also wrote about this) that the socioeconomic status of any given individual has the most impact on a child's life outcome. Children who do not have access to proper nutrition, education, live in split/chaotic families, incarcerated parents, poorer schools...THAT, and many other issues need to be addressed, IMMEDIATELY. We have to heal our families, starting with those who suffer the most.
      Outside of that, I know many very accomplished, intelligent, successful black men and women who sometimes experience micro-aggressions from ignorant non-black people. These same strong black people understand that most microaggressions stem from awkward, well-meaning white people who would never do such a thing if they knew how it make a black person feel. That is one example of ways we need to talk to each other (with love and respect) so that whites could attempt to put themselves in black person shoes, and empathize to the best of their ability.
      I agree with reparations. We just need to decide what reparations to choose as to make the greatest, long-lasting impact.
