    The segment about sharing quilts to donate really touched me. I raised a chronically ill daughter (who is now a healthy adult!) and she was in the hospital 16 times. It was a very stressful and scary time in our lives. One of the comforting things that we experienced were all of the Linus Project crocheted and quilted blankets and pillowcases that she received. It was something that gave her comfort and something that she could hold on to. Those donations truly make a difference!

    Congratulations on your 50th episode!! I’ve enjoyed every one! ❤️
    In pressing my block, I too, learned to press towards the dark. But I’ve found that sometimes the block lays flatter when you press open. I wonder if it was a hard fast rule to press to the side because the quilts were used and washed regularly. The wear and tear of the quilt as a necessity is different from our generation where we lightly use our quilts. And some are only used as decor. Just a thought. ☺️

    Chelsi, you don't have to give away your quilts. They are a part of you. They hold memories.Once my friend made me feel so guilty about not donating my long hair to an organization, that I went ahead and did the donation, but I didn't like to. Quilts and those memories don't grow back. my best to you both.

    On the pressing issue. Think of when quilting originally started most quilters did not use a sewing machine. It was all sewn by hand. Hand sewing might be spaced further apart meaning that the seams might pull out more easily if they were pressed open. I don’t think anyone hand piecing a quilt top would press open but that is just a guess.

    Thank you for the inspiring episode. I quilted for many years as a stress reliever after seeing 30 patients per day (retired provider). Now that I have more time, I contacted our local hospital volunteers who organize charity quilts for terminal pt without any families, or just do not have the means for a warm blanket. I wanted to start the year with a quilt to donate to one of the facilities. I felt honored to have given someone a quilt made with tenderness. The people who received this small gift were so grateful! I now collect my scraps and started making a 10 1/2 blocks when I just want to make crumb blocks. I set aside a half an hour or so, I now have 6 made this month and hope to gift it before the end of the year! The quilts you gifted are beautiful, I am not there yet with my skill. Practice makes perfect!

    If pressing seams open, don’t stitch in the ditch. Mary Fons did a demo that shows that pressed to the side are stronger, but, as you said, strength isn’t a consideration for quilting as much as for clothing. You three are delightful. Congrats all around.

    The Pressing Seams Open discussion. From my research, I have come to the conclusion that back when most quilts were hand pieced, the seams were always pressed to one side. And yes, back the some seams weren’t even pressed. The quilter easily slid her needle from one side of the seam to the other and took an anchor stitch at the seam line. The quilt top was pressed when finished. The pressing to one side was for strength as often the quilts were hand sewn as quickly as possible…..attention to really small stitches weren’t as important as getting the top done. With machiNe piecing, pressing seams open doesn’t present the possibility of seams coming open as it did with hand sewing seams, especially if the maker didn’t take really small stitches.
    BTW, I just hopped on to this video…. think I missed it. I had watched your new video about your quilt planner. I’m very organized (former R.N. Of 53 years). Listening to your insights, I decided to purchase one as I loved the ideas listeners had shared.
    My organization process is quite different. I only work on one quilt at a time. That stopped all of my unfinished project! I finally came up with a wonderful working plan for myself so I could obtain my many quilting Goals.
    I first postulated: *Categories of quilts that I wanted to make.
    * Family Quilts
    * Quilts for our home
    *. Unfinished Quilt
    *. Miscellaneous
    *. Patterns I Own
    *. Fabric Precuts I Have
    *. Small Projects
    *. Quilts Using My Old Much Loved Fabrics
    After mulling this around for a week or so, I decided to try a Quarterly Plan. So I made a graph after planning how many quilts I wanted to make a year. I used several former years to try to come up with a realistic number.
    Next, after studying my list for a few days, I came up with my current plan. On my graph, the 1st Category in each square is from the list above. The next square across is labeled Quarterly, then Project, followed with, Estimated days to Finish, then Start and last, Finished.
    So, here is the fun part. In quarterly, I put 1/4 for the first 4 listed under Category. Each quarter, I would make a quilt for a family member, our home, and one unfinished one along with one miscellaneous item that I had allotted 3 days maximum to complete. Ex, a repair project, pillow, etc.
    Then I would alternate between odd and even quarters for these categories: Patterns I own and precuts I own. HAPPY to share that April starts my second quarter and I’m making Community by Chelsi which is my choice for Our Home.
    The last 2 categories: Small Project and Quilts Made with my Old Fabric are listed under the Quarterly category as TBD. (To be determined). Now, this could end up being a quilt for family, for our home, or using a pattern I own. BUT, I’m using my Old fabrics. Yes, I know the trend is fabric de-stashing, but I have many quilts I want to make that would be perfect for these fabrics. I live in Maine and frugal is in my DNA! Mostly, I love connecting quilt with with my quilting foremothers. I’m a far gal at heart and we live in the woods so these fabrics call to me as loudly as the tantalizing new fabrics. I also love the journey of choosing and using what I have on hand to turn it into a beautiful quilt! Oh, I print out 3 calendar months and fill in the current month, let’s say January with what I want to accomplish. Then in my computer, I have made a chart with the categories and plugged in several quilts that have been calling me for a few years now. I also added where I can find the information for each quilt.
    I have a separate small notebook where I have logged in every unfinished quilt I own. (No new ones generated for 4 years now🙂🙂🙂).
    In this notebook I logged in the quilt along with any and all information about the quilt. Also where the quilt is located and where I had left off working. So, I have a very good idea how long it would take to finish. I just finished one this quarter.
    Until this morning, I didn’t realize that your planner would be a such a great asset along with my rather unique system. Thanks so much for your videos because Eli love your content and your fun joyful presentation. All three of your personalities are such sweet spirits and I know as I read lots of comments, so much joy and happiness to us quilters out here.
    Bach to finishing Stepping Stones for our eldest son. I bought his backing fabric before I chose his pattern. He has a delightful Border Collie, Gracie Mae. So his backing will be covered with Border Collies and this is my final quilt for this quarter. I machine my own quilts on my BabyLock domestic machine and think I’ll finish it just in time. For me, that means binding and label. Love from Maine.

      I heard “swim” too but I think they were saying “Swoon” which a pattern designed by Camille.

    Ohmigosh, I am always shocked at how much I do not like pineapple blocks, to my eyes it's pure chaos, I literally turn my head or close my eyes when one is displayed in as video or quilt shop.

    Sherri and Chelsi, I love your blog and always look forward to watching. I live in your community and have known Sherri for years and remember Billy as a great student when I taught him in 6th grade math. I have used patterns designed by each of you to make quilts that I love. I wanted to comment about substituting a different block in a quilt. I made Sherri's 2021 Block of the Month and decided early on that I wanted to set it on point. I made the 6" blocks and used the same fabric line, Christmas FigsII, using similar prints to the one Sherri did. Because I was setting it on point, the house block wasn't going to work because I didn't want it sideways. I also needed 13 blocks for the setting so I ended up using one block twice and switching the colors and found the pattern for another 6" block that I think was from your 2020 BOM. I love the on-point setting but I did have to make some changes. Can't wait to use it next Christmas.

    I don’t like houses on a quilt.
