Billy adds a lot to these videos with his questions and suggestions. Love all three of you and even after 50 years of sewing and quilting I still learn things.
I really needed this cheerful video today. My 18 year old cat has been really sick and so I’ve been really down this week, thanks for the bright fabrics and personalities!
Those not so loved quilts we use at the ballpark and at football fields for benches or on the ground. I am always amazed how many people comment on the quilts that I was not thrilled with. Thanks for the beautiful fabrics.
I made a mystery quilt during the pandemic with an old FQ bundle from my stash. My tastes have changed and I didn’t love how it was going together. I dubbed it the “ugly quilt”. My sister was visiting and saw it and thought it was great, she loved the 30s reproduction prints. I was over the moon happy to quilt it and gift it to her for Christmas! She loves it and tells me she snuggles with it whenever she watches a movie. So glad that quilt found a home! 😊❤️
Another great podcast - always love the sweet family stories and behind the scene stories about fabric line name choosing etc. Love, love your new fabric line - so many wonderful prints and shades of colours in there. The gingham and cute x prints especially warm my heart!
Wow, what an amazing story about Jean's Snowball quilt. And it was very interesting to hear Sherri's story about color selection. I learned to quilt at 30 and always knew what colors I wanted to use. It never crossed my mind that being a stitcher since the age of 10 give me that POV so easily. I had been selected color/thread combinations for needlepoint for 15+ years. So thanks to Sherri for helping me put that together:) And I can't wait for ginghams in seashore drive. I have always loved plaids, checks, stripes, and ginghams.
I love Billy’s questions! His perspective is unique & many of his questions are ones that I wish that I had thought of! I can’t wait for the new book - I pre-ordered it. Waiting until January for the new fabric will be brutal!
I have a wonderful way of judging which combination of colours, prints go together. I ask my friends from my quilt bee. We have been getting together for over 20 years (until Covid that is).
When I started quilting over 15 years ago, I was confused and worried about picking fabrics. What has helped me now and looking back at several quilts was finding a beautiful back fabric or “main” fabric that represented the person receiving it and choosing matching or coordinating colors from those fabrics for the quilt and also using those fabrics to come up with a design to make
Another fantastic podcast. Thank you for your time to put this together. Absolutely love your new fabric line and will be pre ordering both the fabric and Sherri’s book. 💜💜💜
When I first started quilting choosing fabrics was so intimidating. I always asked for advice from my local quilt shop staff. They were always so helpful. It wasn’t long before I was very comfortable choosing my own.
I loved tis podcast answered all my questions I have a lot of problems with matching colours .i absolutely love balboa and your new collection I’m addicted thank you so much for the tips 👍👍👍👏👏👏🥰🥰🥰
Lol.. I followed a pattern, made a whole quilt top and hated it. I took the whole thing apart and made it in another quilt. I learned a lot. I also have taken out a whole colour way in precuts that I did not like. Learning to make it my own. I am getting more confident.
Just received one of Chelsea's patterns for new fabric! Can't wait to use the gingham!!! And the words too! I go the the gulf every year and just love memories we have too!
We start school August 2nd! Thank you for talking about choosing fabric today. My problem is always narrowing down which one to use or, I’ll have fabric that I love and can’t decide on a pattern-so many choices! 💕
Would you talk about the backings you use. Are they pieced from the collection you used in the quilt top or do you find larger fabric that works with the quilt top? Could you show us some of your quilts with the backing?
The smiles on your faces are priceless! Sherri I am so excited to touch my (signed) copy of the new book. I am also laughing at myself because every single time you introduce a new collection I say Oh that is my favorite ever but this time I think I really mean it! Proud of you both and I LOVE the story behind the inspiration.
I sewed a large quilt top and didn't like it; started taking apart by seam ripping;then just cutting; then decided..forget it..I donated it for fabric to resale shop. Happy to have it gone and the guilt of fabric loss.😁
One thing that didn’t get mentioned is using a color wheel to help in picking colors. There are many options on the market and most come with general instruction on how to use them successfully. There are tons of videos and blog posts out in the world also. It can really be a great guide until you become more comfortable with color. The other tip I have when making a pattern with different fabric than what is pictured is to try and replicate the scale of the fabric chosen by the pattern designer. Pick the colors you like first, then pay attention to the scale of the print in the written pattern. Find a print within your chosen set of colors that most closely matches the same scale of the original fabric. Often, patterns are written with the scale of the particular fabric in mind, either to showcase a focal print, or just simply add a little texture to a background with a tone on tone or low volume print. One last thing is to pay attention to your contrast. For instance, most modern quilt patterns are written with high contrast in mind. If you don’t necessarily like the colors of the written pattern, substitute colors you enjoy that offer the same contrast. Having too many “medium tone” fabrics in a quilt can make secondary designs within a pattern get lost. Try and balance lights, mediums, and darks. In the end however, it’s your project and technically if you like it, great! There really is no right or wrong. It’s all about the journey, like Sherri and Chelsea said 😊 Enjoy the process of learning what your style is.
I guess as you do this for a living your outlook is different. I make quilts to give away to family and friends and a few have beige/brown colour schemes in their homes, and although that’s not my vibe I’ve made a few quilts in those colours. I try to make what they’d like and have that freedom as I’m not selling anything. Typing this I’ve realised that where you live may effect what colours you choose. In your lovely sunny homes the colours look bright and vibrant, but in wet, grey England our homes often are decorated in creams and browns as we need that warmth. Created some food for thought.
Love this !!! So much great information!! I am struggling right now with deciding on a Pattern to go with a Fat Quarter Bundle that I purchased to make a quilt for my sister. She loves Purple so I bought VIOLET HILL by HOLLY TAYLOR but I'm just not sure........any suggestions or comments? Congratulations on the new fabric line (Sooo pretty!) and the New Book!!!
Love your podcast and love your new collection. Ironically, I was listening to this as I was sewing a table runner (Mini Yellow Brick Road Pattern) using your Balboa Collection. Later on in your podcast you talk about colors and mention that you tend to stay away from “brown”. What would you call the darker colors in this collection and your Balboa collections? I would have categorized them as “brown”.
I'm born, raised, and retired back to Iowa! Where can I find the "Stars Over Iowa" quilt pattern? I would love to make the quilt as I have never heard of it until now. It's beautiful. I looked on Etsy, Ebay, Google and cannot find it. I'd appreciate your help and thank you so much in advance. Love yours and Chelsi's podcast and have listened to every single one of them. Thank you both and Billy too!
I so enjoy listening to you, actually watching on RUclips. My husband noticed and mentioned it reminded him of a Saturday Night Live skit, NPRs Delicious Dish. My dilemma… I’m working on a puzzle piece quilt with Kona Cotton Colors, all solid. In laying out the colors I became frustrated. Are there thoughtful ways to lay out 25 colors? There are 72 pieces, 3 of each. Brown, we thought we’d leave the brown out. Tried ordering the colors diagonally and diagonally back and forth in graduated same colors pattern, just didn’t like the way it worked. Wondering if planning quadrants or just putting 4 together at a time then laying out the larger blocks would be a better. Any ideas would be great. Thank you
If a collection has prints that have larger white patterns, that can look really weird with white sashing. Using a different color for the sashing can enable the use of those fabrics.
What is the best way to cut precuts with the pinked edges? Do you include the pinked edge in your measurement or trim those edges off? This really bothers me because sometimes the unit doesn’t square up like it’s supposed to.
off topic, Chelsea-I miss your glasses and hair up, that looked so cute. I very much enjoyed your discussion on color. i do think a color wheel is helpful/
I started quilt making when Joannes was my only fabric store. Those little dots on the selvage were a life saver. I learned how to put fabrics together before I ever heard of fabric lines. Billy’s questions are so valuable and interesting. The 3 of you are an awesome combination n

I agree it is a learning process, I look at the first quilt I made and later looking at my other quilts over the years how I have evolved.
I absolutely love Seashore Drive fabric collection!

Sorry to hear about your cat kristin! Are these fabrics awesome!
Those not so loved quilts we use at the ballpark and at football fields for benches or on the ground. I am always amazed how many people comment on the quilts that I was not thrilled with. Thanks for the beautiful fabrics.

A fun podcast to listen to while I hand quilt. Thank you for posting this!

Please share sometime that quilt you and your great aunt and family made for your grandma. Sounds so special.
Beautiful fabrics. Looking forward to your new book

Cant wait to get my hands on this fabric. So pretty.

Another great podcast!! I love your log cabin quilt Chelsi! Already making my shopping list for Seashore Drive. 💗

Someday, will you show all of your collections from the first one to the latest? It would be very interesting.
This was a great episode! Thanks.👏🏻💫
Beautiful collections 👍❤️😊
Beautiful fabric🥰
I love this collection SO much! I'm going to ask all 3 quilt shops in my area to carry it!!
Just received one of Chelsea's patterns for new fabric! Can't wait to use the gingham!!! And the words too! I go the the gulf every year and just love memories we have too!
Sherri, the five types of fabric Edyta Sitar recommends for inclusion in a quilt are small, medium and large prints plus polka dot and stripe fabrics.
Ooooh, I looove the new colors! So pretty! Im cutting down on buying yardage but I'm sure I can order a small bundle.
We start school August 2nd! Thank you for talking about choosing fabric today. My problem is always narrowing down which one to use or, I’ll have fabric that I love and can’t decide on a pattern-so many choices! 💕
I’ve had a couple of quilts I didn’t like, so I put them on the back of another quilt. They work well for backing. 🤷🏼♀️
Would you talk about the backings you use. Are they pieced from the collection you used in the quilt top or do you find larger fabric that works with the quilt top? Could you show us some of your quilts with the backing?

Do colors go together? The color wheel is a valuable tool I’ve used.

The quilting on the log cabin is stunning.
Very pretty fabric. I love the blues. Is it hard to come up with new quilts?

Those quilts we don't like could we treat them like fabric and cut them up and transform to something else?
If we don’t have any local quilt shop, could you put links to shops that carry them so we could purchase online?
What is the pattern name of the quilt behind Chelsea and the lower one on the ladder on the other side. Thnx
Where in Iowa was your family from? Pella, Iowa is my hometown!
I started quilt making when Joannes was my only fabric store. Those little dots on the selvage were a life saver. I learned how to put fabrics together before I ever heard of fabric lines.
Billy’s questions are so valuable and interesting. The 3 of you are an awesome combination n
Your collections all seem to go together. Same colors throughout them all.
As a grandmother I hated watching barney
Love your podcasts but it is so difficult to listen to with the hundreds of "Yeah's" and "Like's" during the conversations.
