  • Sketch-reporter James Gurney paints a picture of the Grumman LLV (Long Life Vehicle), the main delivery truck used by the US Postal Service. Over 140,000 of the Post Office vehicles are in operation, but they have outlived their expected lifespan of 20 years. Some of these USPS delivery vehicles have been running for 33 years.

A wonderful painting. I use my car for work and my MPG was about 45-50 miles. It's a petrol but when I had a works van in my previous job it was a desiel and I filled it up once a week. About 2/3rds to 3/4s of a tank of fuel was used from memory. This was for mostly driving at slow speeds, 20mph and depending on the number of potholes we found a lot of stop start too. So about the same mileage as my car, which isn't a fair comparison to the vans as these are 7-8 years old and not built in the 90's, even so the MPG on them should be better than 17. Must be costing a fortune in fuel alone, let alone any other maintenance costs.
An interesting video and another wonderful painting.

You're a legend. When I was in college in Poughkeepsie, I wish I took more trips up to Rhinebeck- would have been cool to run into you painting a scene! haha

Man, what a joy to watch the process!! James, what is your opinion on digital painting? Is that a medium you enjoy or not really?

I've got my hands pretty full with gouache, watercolor, casein, and oil. But I admire many artists who do digital, but I've just never really played with digital painting.

I have mixed feeling towards digital painting, because I wonder if most digital artist have the ability to recreate in real life (canvas, paint, gouache, watercolors...) what they've "painted" digitally, I've seen a lot of gorgeous watercolor paintings and tried to figure out what techniques the artist has used only to later find out that is a digital painting and the watercolor effects are already programmed as a pack of watercolor brushes. It's a complex subject.

@@mc_va A digital only artist cant replicate a digital painting in real life just as a traditional only artist cant do the same in digital. Some of the necessary skills are transferable, some are not and it works both ways.

I love the guy you were talking to! It's funny, I grew up in Nebraska, and I've lived in California (yes there is a lot of homeless people because of the housing crisis) and I am in Rhode Island now. The East Coast has the most beautiful characters, I love it. I mean everywhere has wonderful people, but East Coasters have a different way of doing things, I love it.
