In a way, I admire the tenant's moxie. If she feels she is within her legal right to occupy the place, then she should embody that to the fullest. What we need to ask is why she chose to represent herself, and that saying, "Anyone who represents themselves has a fool for a client. I personally do all I can to make sure I pay rent, but that's just me, an onlooker who only sees this short news clip. That said, implicit bias is a factor here, too. If the "tenant" they interviewed toward the end of the video wasn't white, would this story have a different ending? Would we even be hearing about it in the first place.

I sold my rentals for this reason. If people don’t pay you cannot get them out. Small family rentals can easily put a family into bankruptcy when a tenant doesn’t pay rent and the courts will not evict them. A corporate buyer ended up buying my rentals. They have the deep pockets to afford attorneys that I couldn’t. The corporations win and the small business owner goes out of business. The Rich get richer and the little guy can’t make a dime. I depended on rents to pay mortgage and taxes that one day I might get it paid off and actually have income for retirement. Mortgage holders don’t care when a small landlord has a non paying tenants, they just ruin your credit and foreclose. It’s not a fair system. Ok I’ll get off my soapbox and shut up now.

BINGOOO! Unfortunately, California has shot itself in the foot. We have a huge housing shortage that won't be corrected without investments in housing. In many markets, they are trying to recruit homeowners to add an ADU to their home and rent it out. Good luck with that after allowing tenants to not pay rent for three years and still requiring the homeowners to pay the taxes, maintain the property, and in some cases pay the utilities. It was three years in Alameda County with an eviction moratorium. Some of the tenants were making more money than ever as traveling healthcare workers and buying new BMWs. Some even sublet the unit. Investors will not forget this and California renters will pay for this for generations. It will be almost impossible to rent a single-family home in California. It will be only apartment buildings with professional management and a lawyer on the payroll.

The state government has transferred your rights to use and control your property to tenants who are not paying rent, and to drug-addicted petty criminals who are camping in your doorway. The state is punishing people who worked hard and saved and invested their earnings in our community. They are rewarding drug-addicted petty criminals from all over the country. You get more of what you reward and less of what you punish. What do we want more of? Do we want more investment in housing or streets paved with human waste and used syringes?
