there was a local player, thumbswayup, that everyone joked looked like kermit the frog and he hated it. another player, sypherphoenix, fixed his controller up for him. a few years later, we're having a smashfest at sypher's place and thumbs says "hey can you take a look at my controller for me" and sypher open's it up in front of everyone to reveal that he put a little picture of kermit in the controller and thumbs had been carrying it around with him for years. it was amazing.
Hey Toph are you creating a new player education series? Feeling like a lot of the videos you're putting out fit into that category, would be a good playlist for your channel atleast imo.
Yo Toph, snap back with falco is real. I legit hit the control stick the opposite direction of where I want my laser to shoot. It’s been more consistent.
On newer GameCube controllers that have the removable stick boxes you can manually adjust the deadzone or neutral position. The two screws on the back of the motherboard that attach the stick box can be loosened or tightened to adjust it. From my experience from tinkering either screw will adjust the X or Y axis but it's not exact. If you open up the controller menu in Dolphin you can tweak it to a pretty exact degree, hope this helps
Very very minor self explanatory thing you missed: some people remove springs from their L/R buttons to get better power shields, because it basically changes the usual L/R analog inputs to digital
@@VladAngelOfDarkness normally u do just one of them that u exclusively use for wavedash or powershield and the other one keeps the spring for lifht shield and lightr press l cancel
APPRECIATE THIS SO MUCH!!! I've had an Ultimate controller since they came out and it's worked great for the almost 2 years I've been using it. However, recently the pivots have been inconsistent and and the light shields were coming out at L-Cancels. This helped clear that up in less than 5 minutes. You saved me!! Thanks Toph :3
Holy hell thank you! I was having issues trying to backair and getting dair and thinking I was going crazy. This also helped fix my pivots, and fixed the problem where I would get a turnaround during my waveshines by accident. So much better thank you
I started melee recently and the losing my wallet thing plagued me for months. I thought I was just bad and then I got a new controller. It was also the most tilting thing. To get a read on the opponent approaching and get punished was infuriating. SO brutal.
Been modding and customizing controllers for a bit now, absolutely loved the vid Toph. Also for your rumble pack if you never use it but still want the weight you can cut and desolder the cables going to the rumble pack so that you dont need to worry about turning it off
Easy solution, just switch to box :). In all seriousness though, great video as always Toph. Awesome to have a single video with all of this information in one place!
I was told that a way to avoid snapback is to keep your thumb on the control stick, and instead of letting it snap back (and potentially reversing on you), consciously guide it back to the neutral position. Not sure if that's real or not, but I feel like it's improved my consistency for turnaround-B moves
Thanks for making this video! I was opening up my controller a few weeks ago to fix some stuff but I had to look all over the internet for advice. It's great to have all this information in just one video now.
43:07 And just like that, I pretty much just fixed my controller today because the one I had with the best stick boxes had one of its potentiometers break off and I didn't think just migrating them to another board was _that_ simple. (Seriously, I have like four other throwaway motherboards but they all have varying amounts of terrible ledgedashing, snapback, and wrong way aerials that I thought were PODE) Bless you, Toph and Reeve. 🙏
Great video! The only missing thing is that you did not talk about trigger plugs. They are in my opinion as important as notches, and much more accessible as they are insanely cheaper. But for the rest, it's perfectly explained, great job!

On the subject of adding the black triggers to the controller. You're notched up and used to it, so you probably don't wanna mess with it... but a black nunchuk stick would look ultra clean. They are ever so slightly taller than a standard GCN stick, but I don't think I could switch back after changing. The extra height gives me better feel on tilts.
The higher "throw" throws me off, and I'd rather keep the shorter stick for more speed, but I replaced a homie's stick with one and he loves it. To each their own, I guess, and I'm glad it works for you!
vertical snapback is so horrible for mario 64 because after getting a star, when you scroll down to "continue without saving" it can snap back up to "save and quit" and instantly kill the run 💀
There are a nearly infinite number of ways to complete a shield drop. Yet we were only given one way in this video since it was not the focus. And I'm not going into it all but you can hold left or right and push down to the diagonal angle. Or you can shield drop by just pushing the stick straight down like in Smash 64 where was no spot dodging making it instant and free. But in Melee its a lot harder. You must move the stick straight down at a Slow yet precise speed to not spotdodge. The other ways to do it was the way that I did it before UCF. I almost never missed Shield drops before UCF because of my method. No one told me this, I figured it out on my own. But whachya do is kinda like the Axe Method (left/right to diagonal down), Except you don't press all the way left or right, You hold it half way held to left or right in the walk range then while pushing from walk position (while shielding) outward toward the gate diagonally without actually touching the gate and then curl it down inwards to the stick being pressed halfway down. (like as if you could walk downward, it's facing down but not touching the gate). I'm not going over every last detail of these. But in short, what makes Shield drop with any method have even more methods within them, is to decide how far you drift inward, outward or not at all. So After you shield drop, lets say from Right to Down Right. You will gain distance heading right. You can continue to drift right or you can drift inward, kinda sorta but not exactly simulating a straight down shield drop. Which looks like Right to Down Right to Quarter plus Eighth Circle downright to all the way left... If you start high up enough you can Shield drop right and drift backwards enough to be back further than where you started on the X-AXIS (of the character's' position). You can also Shield Drop Straight down and then drift any amount of left or right afterward. This method is hardest but gives you the most control. Then There's Axe method Left or Right to down left or down right to full drift left or right. That's an advancing shield drop and can be useful for laser or Samus Aran missile spacing.
Do people Frankenstein anymore? I know I had a friend who would do what you’re talking about and buy a lot of controllers then put the best parts in a few controllers instead.
"Everyone knows how to shield drop" me who doesn't even play melee 👁👄👁 Edit: Sorry toph that this comment got so many likes your face is probably like 👁👄👁 bc of that
While on a platform run/walk to left or right and immediately hold the shield button while still holding the thumb stick in the direction you were just moving. Now all you have to is angle the thumb stick down from the far left/right notch. Ez shield drop, now just add in some Aerials after the down input.
After the boxx, the next thing is to have a controller that has the capability of using a dpad and have the triggers be the different values to run, walk or walk slowly. And what i mostly want now for other smash entries, is yo have the c-stick to he replaced by a circular dpad, so i always get consistent extended diagonal dash cancels in Ultimate. In general, the next step after the boxx should be controllers with digital capabilities, so we can exchange between options whenever we want in the same controller
You talked about reaction time with audio in your CRT v Monitor video. Touch reaction time is even faster than audio. Hot take: You are doing yourself a disservice by turning off Rumble.
I feel like they developed melee to be hindered by the controller. Not on purpose tho. It's crazy how much inconsistency, in high level play, can happen because of a controller. Falco main here I’m not sure how much actual SnapBack my 2 controllers have, but my main controller which I first got a few months after I started playing melee, it has a very loose stick where if I pull it back all the way and release, it will recoil back and forth multiple times after recording it in slow-mo, and it’s both a blessing and a curse. A loose stick basically makes it to where I don’t have to flick the stick back as hard, but I have to stop the stick with my thumb near the center. My other spare controller, which is superior in basically every way except for the stick, has a tight stick that is *just* loose enough to where it recoils back to the other side, but is too fast to stop mid-way. I installed a SnapBack mod on this one recently, but the change was barely noticeable just because of how bad the stick itself is. I wanna eventually replace the stick on this controller and use it full-time, but for now I have to use the other one because of it’s looser stick being easier to manage, along with me being used to it. So anyways, GameCube controllers are basically for masochists, including me.
I opened my shitty bootleg GC controller when its stick started to loosen up, and succesfully diagnosed the issue with no prior experience doing these kind of stuff, such a fun moment and good feeling ! (the stickboxes were made of shitty plastic that wore down with usage, like really ultra shitty plastic lol, I used these controllers (had 2 for 20 bucks) for like 3 weeks and the sticks were just unusable after that. Fortunately, the controllers are og GC controller shell reproductions so I can still use that to make a fancy looking shell to put on my actual new GC controller from the ultimate special pack without butchering that sweet print)
Nice vid, just was looking into a new controller, and nice to here a lot of these problems I'd had previously put in context! I actually just ordered an ebay one, and was curious about putting a capacitor in, I'm pretty experienced with circuits, but is that something people can DIY or only trust with controller modder kinda thing. Any advice, or pointing in the direction of good resources would be greatly appreciated
I'd like to comment that the reason the Goomwave dashes back incidentally is because of the changes made via UCF. If every controller was a Goomwave, that function of UCF would not be necessary.
Just some more info on controller snapback and when it stops happening on a new one. I bought a controller about a year and a half ago. It took 400 hours of active play for my snapback to stop happening completely. Some controllers are tougher to break in than others it seems.
Went to my first tournament at off season (yes I’m going through old tops vids haha) and I got to meet Nez and holy shit he made my shitty controller work incredible. He’s amazing
I know this video is old, but if you could do a video on, "how I broke my controller during maintenance" that would be nice because I don't want to open my only controller and kill it.
Gc controllers are well built. Out of that gen, they were the easiest controllers to dismantle. A close 2nd are dreamcast pads. Then, the trickiest pads to get back together would be the Dualshock 2, which is a breeze compared to a dualshock 1.
My controller disconnects randomly when I'm playing, I bought it modded and it had been paracorded, I think it's pins on the board that had been soldered wrong, anyway I can fix it myself?
One thing that the video doesn't cover that I'd like to know: if you DO buy a goomwave, will that be good forever? aka, you can recalibrate your notches easily when they get fucked up, the capacitor will work forever, the stickbox will correctly read pivots etc? I see top players often complaining about their controller even after buying a nez controller. Will goomwaves stay good forever? it's quite a lot of investment for a controller, especially imported to the uk
I think one of the selling points of the Goomwave is the fact that the things that won't be "good forever" (in particular, the potentiometers, which are typically the most finnicky part of the controller) are very easy to swap out and don't require soldering, unlike a default controller, and they plan on stocking potentiometers and making it easy for people to do this sort of thing themselves.
I have never had a problem with 3rd party cast resin sticks or buttons (maybe some minor sanding needed to get right) BUT I have had issues with casted shells. Also if anyone knows anyone who sells good thumbsticks in bulk lmk.
Smh my controller has SnapBack on one side so my falco can only lazer to the left unless I lazer in place, and can only ledge dash on left side. Can’t wait for my box
I don't play melee anymore I used to back in the day casually with my bros. But my smash 4 controller that I use to play ultimate with was worn in so I sent it to a controller modder to repair my pots
my current problem is that i have 2 gamecube controllers; both of them originals, that came with my PAL gamecube. now my L button on controller #1 and my R button on controller #2 is broken. i dont get satisfaction with melee tech, i mostly play ultimate, where i use L to shield, Z to grab and R to jump. so now i get the choice between no shield or no jump :(
So, downvote my persnicketiness if you like, but... The Suez Canal does not have gates. It is in a ridiculously flat part of the world, and the water levels on both sides do not shift enough to make them necessary.
As someone whos looking to get i to melee, a video about where to look and what too look for when buying a controller would be cool. I was browsing ebay last night and saw terms like OEM and DOL-003 and didnt know what i was getting into. I know the smash Ultimate GC controllers have there problems but other than that it just seemed like a crapshoot
Been opening, deepcleaning, modifying and fixing Gamecube Controllers for years and NEVER KNEW about "Resetting Pivots" or "Fixing" the problem with getting different C stick areals.. I'll give it a shot later. Not sure how to not screw up since I didn't know those black things could be popped off. I'm not sure how to pop them off, you didn't show how exactly. I'll just wing it I guess. Why does it reset your pivots.
I opened my controller and there was a sticky note that said “You Suck at Ledgedashing” :(
Glad that wasn’t just me
I guess I'm kind of randomly asking but does anyone know of a good site to stream newly released tv shows online ?

how do you open the menu in uncle punch? assuming that's what toph is using here.
I don't play melee anymore I used to back in the day casually with my bros. But my smash 4 controller that I use to play ultimate with was worn in so I sent it to a controller modder to repair my pots
my current problem is that i have 2 gamecube controllers; both of them originals, that came with my PAL gamecube. now my L button on controller #1 and my R button on controller #2 is broken. i dont get satisfaction with melee tech, i mostly play ultimate, where i use L to shield, Z to grab and R to jump. so now i get the choice between no shield or no jump :(
that the axe method of shield dropping, I use the slight diagonal method
So, downvote my persnicketiness if you like, but... The Suez Canal does not have gates. It is in a ridiculously flat part of the world, and the water levels on both sides do not shift enough to make them necessary.
As someone whos looking to get i to melee, a video about where to look and what too look for when buying a controller would be cool. I was browsing ebay last night and saw terms like OEM and DOL-003 and didnt know what i was getting into. I know the smash Ultimate GC controllers have there problems but other than that it just seemed like a crapshoot
Didn't mention clipping the spring to fix wavedashing/powershielding
Those buttons are pretty badass not gonna lie
So is there a guide or schematic out there that can tell me what capacitance I need to add for the snapback capacitor mod?
Forgot my man w0mp!
"The Golden Guardian" that's a Rienne controller, right?
I think it's a Bassline
Been opening, deepcleaning, modifying and fixing Gamecube Controllers for years and NEVER KNEW about "Resetting Pivots" or "Fixing" the problem with getting different C stick areals.. I'll give it a shot later. Not sure how to not screw up since I didn't know those black things could be popped off. I'm not sure how to pop them off, you didn't show how exactly. I'll just wing it I guess. Why does it reset your pivots.
I've lost a lot of stocks to snapback lmao
One time little Z filled his GC controller with beans....I feel like that fits in with this video
Damn I do the lost wallet all the time, didn’t know it was my controller
Any purchase links that lead to these controller guys?
