Maazel doesn't even need the score, such is his memory and concentration.

Lorin Maazel..as far as I'm concerned, THE master interpreter of this brilliant score. Great to hear the VIOLINS and violas so prominently balanced in this recording. Thanks for posting. LR

What a superb conductor this man was! I remember seeing him in Lisbon with a superb orchestra (can't remember which) nearly 60 years ago. By then lots of young people still liked music (this kind of...) and the applause in the end would make any Ronaldo or anyone similar shy! Don't remember the program but I still have the vivid image in my brain of the extra he gave us. He entered the stage and practically jumped to his podium beating the opening of "Die Meistersing von Nurnberg" while still in the air! And this immortal piece from Strauss, how superbly played! Pity the slight mishap with a trumpet at 35:52. Those who think this civilization is eternal just compare this music what it's done today.

The music is ver dinamic and full of contrast. The theme from the Eulenspiegell in the horns is ver recognising. The structre is a rondo, but the magic of the involvingi harmonical armosphe gives it dynamism

@@NDRKlassik yeah, but first it said 2006, and then you changed it. I still believe it's from 96, having seen this on the telly back then. It was during his tenure as music director of the orchestra (1993-2002) when he did most of the Strauss Tone Poems while he recorded them in state of the art sound.
