- Hello. My name is Cliff and I'm a gem cutter from Australia. In this episode of "How to cut gemstones", I will be faceting a type of Amethyst called "Rose de France". This gem is cut from my own imagination. You will get a unique perspective of my world, and what it's like to facet gems. I will also be reviewing and testing a new polishing lap that I've never used before. So come along and join me, and learn how to cut gemstones. Regards Cliff
Few months ago I found in a charity shop a ring with an amazing main stone. The cut was absolutely spectacular. I thought it was amethyst but when I took it to a specialist he told me that the stone is rose de France amethyst with a concave cut. After that I change my mind about my birthstone. Thank you so much again for the wonderful video.
The rose pink colours are really special in my opinion. Gem cutters would walk over broken glass to facet Morganite just to achieve the same effect. Rose de France is very underatted.
I bought an old ring in an antique store for $15 about 15 years ago. It was a small ring size, so I had it reset in my size in a Celtic knot design. The stone itself is a pear cut and very pretty. I love the pinkish lilac color. Just recently I learned it was Rose de France amethyst. It is still one of my very favorite rings. Lucky find, indeed!
Rose de France is one of my favourite colors.
You work with your hands and your mind and your overall spirit that shows the beauty of the stones and their brilliant splendor
Thank you for your kind words.
Oh my, that is a beautiful gem. The cut you invented for it works great with that lovely, light lilac colouring. I bow to the master.
Thanks Kathy. I must admit this lighter colour is very appealing.
your videos are so relaxing and makes learning just a pleasure .
one day I will have a machine and hope to share with others as you have.
Cliff I've never heard of Rose de France Amethyst before and I must say, this gem looks like a purple diamond!! It is absolutely beautiful and your special creation cut just brought out the brilliance even more. Purple is my favorite color and I would love to own this beauty of a gem. Thanks again for bringing us another amazing video.
Thank you imari2305
. I like purple also particularly the lighter tones.
Thanks for talking me through it and reviewing products, save us newbies from frustrating pitfalls.
Love that lilac colour so much. It looks good for this gem. Love this video. Such a nice cut you did to it . Keep it coming mate.
Hi John, Thanks. I have to admit I do enjoy the lighter colours over the dark colours. Yet the gem industry demands higher prices for certain gems like blue Sapphires that do not always reveal what's in gem. Cheers
Hello cliff, i have been using the lightning laps for about 1.5 years now, and have found when new they will scratch as you are finding out until they have 3 or 4 stones under their belts. As of longevity, the polishing laps , the cerium ox. lap i have has cut 40 stones or more and is still doing well. The 3000 lap has slowed down as has a 600 and 1200 , the manufacturer told me they can be renewed by using the 400 sandpaper across the lap like the directions say for a new lap. For me these laps have their place but i still rely on the old metal bond laps.
Good luck.
I love your videos on amethysts. You always do a great job on your work. Thanks for uploading.
Thank you
Goomatora.
That’s really pretty. My birthstone is amethyst. Not a fan of the dark purple but I love this colour. I really like the way you cut this stone. Very nice
Thanks Tori. I love light coloured gems also. lighter gems produce more sparkle, and you can actually look into the gem. It's the darker gems that are more expensive and reveal less, at times I wonder why.
Absolutely beautiful, Please keep us updated on the Lightening lap and if it works out for 20 stones.
Yes, I will keep tabs on the durability of the "Lightning Laps"....Cheers
Stunning .i like this cut ,shows all the beautiful sparkle inside 😀
the larger crown allows a lovly window to see all the wonderful pavilion facits
I deliberately wanted a larger table just to peer into a gem. On certain cuts a small table can make gems really sparkle also. It all depends on design angles.
as always your videos make me relax my soul
Thanks Drgig Garcia
.
Love, love, LOVE it! 😍 I wish I had this in a pendant. Just beautiful.
Thanks Stephanie. I was pleased with the outcome.
I'v been watching people mine gems and opal for the last two weeks and RUclips recommend your channel to made and I'm loving it enough to subscribe.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Cheers
Exquisite piece you made Cliff.
Thank you Dalibor.
Hi Cliff, wonderful mixed cut. As a novice exploding with ideas seeing you cut creatively inspires me. I love how your stone turned out. As always your skill is very much in evidence. Thank you for sharing with us.
Oh as a side note I plan to visit in September of the Spectrum mine in Oregon. U.S. To do a belt run of Sunstone. I would love to send you some to cut for your own collection. It would be awesome to see you apply your skill to the cutting of it. Please let me know if you are interested. I have a lot of access to the common less impressive Sunstones to practice on through my mentor here in Washington. My trip in September will be to get some nice color rich Sunstones.
Hi Tam, Yes please. I would love to facet some Oregon Sunstone with color. It is very hard to get hold of here. I've faceted the clear variety and it is such a beautiful gem, but the variety with the colors of green and red are very impressive. You are very lucky to have access to the mine. In the "About Section" I have a email address if you wish to message me. Regards Cliff

Beautiful! Thank you.
Lovely, lovely job. Each video you do makes me want THAT gem--each one seems better than the last. You are a MASTER!!!! Amethyst is my birthstone.
very nice. a pair of those would make great cufflinks.
As always, thanks for sharing your skill and your art with us. The stone is beautiful. See ya in the next video.
Thanks Scott...Take care mate.
Beautiful gem Cliff. Great job.
Thanks Ian.
so beautiful! rose de france is my favorite stone!!!
I do think the colour is amazing. Thanks for watching.
nice cause it's so clean...
Very top my friend 😉😉😉
simply stunning my friend (Y)
awesome stone
Very nice, I hope the amethyst I am doing turns out as nice and shiny as yours. I am finding it to be a real headache to polish, I almost get it bright and shiny and a scratch turns up and spoils the facet,,,,,grrrrr,,,,, I have not thrown it out the window yet…😅 lol.😊
Love it
I love Amythyst but have never heard of this type before, it's very stunning! Thanks for sharing👍💯💖
The term Rose de France has been around for a long time in the gem industry. It really specifies a particular color and variety in Amethyst.
Linda pedra!
Awesome video like always! I thought of a cool idea you can try line day if you're interested. The next time you have a red gem, either make a rupee like from legend of zelda, and or a deep red gem that resembles a hawks talon. I just think that would be so cool to see you do
Thanks Remmi manga ink
. I will check the legend of Zelda....Cheers
@@VintageTimeGems I whole heatedly agree with this person lol
İzlemesi kadar müzikleri dinlemeside güzel.. elinize sağlik
Thank you Hakan...Have a nice day.
Lindíssimas,
Thank you
Cliff,
Admittedly I am a beginner, but for what it's worth, I see NO need for the lightning lap: polishing any quartz from a 3,000 prepolish, cerium oxide powder on a tin lap is almost instantaneous.
I agree. I think the lightning lap is a waste of money.
magic
Thanks Grant.
Hey cliff,
Can we get an update on how your lightning lap has held up? Are the striations still an issue? Would you buy another given what you know now?
Hi Uriah, I haven't used the lightning lap much at all since. I think it's a waste of money. I won't buy another lightning lap, as I believe that these laps need to be used is a series from pre polish through to final polish which makes such a combo expensive. I would like to try the Creamway lap as so many rave about it (but it's expensive). The trouble is do they facet as much as I do? So there is no way of knowing how long they last....Cheers Cliff
Have you tried polishing with 200k diamond grit? Is there a visual difference compared to 50k diamond grit?. Also have you ever worked with hiddenite? I bought nice size stone and am looking for any insights in cutting and polishing it.
I never heard of 200k grit, only 100k. Not a lot of difference in polish, that's my opinion. I'd only use 50,000k or cerium.
Love it👍👍 do you sell these?
Do you have a page on where you sell your gemstones
Hello. I don't sell my gems.
Vintage Time. I always thought "Rose de France Amethyst" just looked like pale weak colored Amethyst ... but when a cutter like you gets a hold of it, magic happens. Which country was the rough from?
Brazil.
YO what up its yo boi and i gots to say this vid is a big ol 20 outta 19 just simply a angle on a screen door
Thanks Austin.
Just curious what make is your machine, price range and availability to the U.S. market.
A facetstar... made in Australia. Not sure of the price. Probably $1500 secondhand.
I want to learn. I am getting a faseting machine
Uncle, waht fine flatlap's number do you use? 😊
