One of the best pieces of advice I've ever heard for doing Kitchener/ tubular bind off is to memorize the phrase "knit, off, purl; purl, off, knit." That's helped me a TON!
So happy to help! We just reorganized our website for knitters like you, www.thechillydog.com/. It's easier to find the topic you need, when you need it and members can access our entire learning library ad-free.
I like the technique of putting the first 2 stitches on a locking holder and then working them with the last 2 as usual. It makes for a perfect jog-less finishing edge
I'd been held up for a month now stressing about finishing a sweater band using tubular bind off. You're a miracle worker. Got the hang of it almost right away. Looks great. Thank you!!!
VERY CLEAR INSTRUCTION - & I say this from the perspective of an advanced beginner who gets easily frustrated when advanced knitters demonstrate techniques quickly - as if all in their audience are at THEIR level of expertise. Thank you!
Best video I’ve seen to demonstrate this technique. The view os close up, framed well in video and done in a light colored yarn. I also like how you explained why it works.
This is the first tubular bind off video that made COMPLETE sense! I was able to bind off a sweater neck with no mistakes/no starting over. THANK YOU! SO glad I found this!
Mercy. @thechillydog, I bow down in thanks😂 In actual tears of gratefulness for your tutorial. They've taken me to another level of happiness. Soo confused by other videos. But yours are just stunning in their simplicity and clarity. Deeply grateful. You have saved my skin!😅
You are an excellent teacher. I tried following this cast off method on many videos but you have the best process to help me understand and execute this finish. Thank you.
Oh my goodness, thank you! I've looked at tons of videos for this bind off and yours is the ONLY one I can follow. You are a genius!

The best and clearest video I've seen explaining this bind off. The illustration and explanation at the beginning help you to understand exactly what you'll be doing. The pace and the clear instructions are the BEST! Thank you!
The drawing of the stitch structure was a wonderful tool to understand what was being done and why. Thank you. It makes perfect sense. I said aha out loud.
You are a genius!! Combinig the usual 5 steps into 2 moves have made this so easy to execute, and even if I was distracted I could easily see where to restart. Good job and thank you :)
Thank you, thank you, this is by far the only video worth seeing and the only one that makes sense, now I understand the process. very well explained thank you again for sharing.
Thank you. I've used this method from you about 6 months ago. I couldn't find this video today and I tried 3 other videos with no success until I found your video again. Thanks
Thank you so much for this video! I have tried in vain to learn how to do this without needing to follow instructions every time but your explanation both with the initial pictures and the way you broke it down as you did it made it so easy to understand! Life changing!!! Thank you!!!!!
You are an exceptional teacher! I've watched so many videos, and yours was by far the quickest but exceptionally easily explained! Loved the drawings at the start, really explained what we are trying to do so well. Keep up the good work! You've made my knitting a breeze today!
Thank you so much for this fabulous tutorial. I have a sweater that's been sitting for 2 years just waiting for a tubular bind-off at the waist (I have read about this bind-off in the past and it overwhelmed me!), and I finally went for it using your tutorial and it was easy peasy this time because of how you explained it!
I have to say, this technique is amazing at how it works! Just used it on the neck, armholes and hem on a chunky vest. Perfect way to avoid bulk at these bind offs! Thanks so much for sharing 😃
Thank you. I have watched a few different tutorials for tubular bind off and yours is by far the best one. I have saved this video as I will need to rewatch this later today when I use this bind off on the 1x1 ribbing at the waist of the sweater I am making.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. You're an awesome teacher!! Couldn't find any other video that was super clear like yours, and love that you take the time to explain how the stitches take shape. Thank you again
I can’t thank you enough for this video, I’ve come back to it time and time again when I do a 1x1 bind off and every time I watch it I appreciate just how clear your explanation is 🎉 thank you!
I've tried to learn this a few times and been very frustrated. This tutorial is so clear and simple that I got great results binding off over 300 stitches on my first attempt. Thanks so much!
I have watched several tubular cast off videos, both in the round and straight edge, and this one is the best. The challenge with this technique is it is easy to lose your place. Your explanation of how to be guided by the Knit vs Purl stitches in the 1x1 rib is a huge help. Also, your two step approach makes keeping track easier. I was binding off a heavy worsted and found that when bringing the yarn through from the back I had to bring the yarn through, then go through the second stitch knit wise. Many thanks for a great video.
Thank you so much! The best video I have seen on tubular bind off. Clear with fantastic explanation. Loved the explanation of why it works, what we are doing and how the stitches are joining in a tube. Allowed me to figure out where I was if I needed to step away from my knitting for a few minutes. For me, the explanation was much more helpful than a mantra to remember. Brilliant. Also loved the use of a locking stitch marker. Thanks🙏🏻 I will check out your other videos.
This was my second time doing the tubular bind off, the first time I did it it just didn’t look right and I couldn’t figure out why. I figured it was tension. I had used a different tutorial that gave no explanation for why or how this method works. After trying again for the second time, I realized that I was paying no attention to whether or not my stitches were knits or purls. I had to undo it and fix it. I’m SO glad that I found this tutorial, it is so informative & the best one I’ve found. Thank you so much! You are a great teacher!
I’m a fan of chili dog tutorials. This is the second one I’ve bookmarked, Kitchener stitch is the other. Love how you combine knitting steps to minimize the number of time you have to pull that tail through. One thing that made it easier for me was to pull just my needle through on that last step to make the final knit stitch easier to pick up. Next time I’m looking for a good tutorial I will look to the chili dog first!
I’ve watched a couple other videos on this and done it a few times but THIS is the first time I was completely comfortable with the process and for the rhythm of it. Thanks for the super clear steps!
This is a wonderful video! I've been binding my socks off in a tubular bind off following written directions (with really confusing diagrams) that I found years ago. Actually SEEING it being done is so helpful. I wish that I would have had this when I first started making socks from the toe up - it would have saved me so much grief ! !!
Thank you so much for clearing up the mystery of how to end this bind off. The whole process gave me 50 fits as I had to take it out several times before I got the sequence embedded in my mind. And this bind off is not easy to tink! Your videos are so good!
I’m working Tin can knits Flax pullover for my Hubby for Christmas so I needed this! I didn’t realize how much I needed to do this until I watched your video!!!
@@masuganut2082 this is my first one , casting off waist and will split a skein of yarn for the sleeves to try to keep colorway matching . At this time I have sleeves held on interchangeable cables with caps until I could finish body
@@hajigiovi7525 oh splitting the skein is a good idea. I tried mine once before but hadn’t checked gauge and got a sweater that was like 25 inches too big 😳 Now I’ve checked gauge hahaha. Well I wish you lots of luck with your knitting❤️ I’m sure it’s going to be beautiful
I'm not the most logical person and found this the easiest and best tutorial after scrolling through lots including one of my favourite pattern makers! Great to discover you Chillydog!
This video is so detailed and explains what is supposed to happen! It helped me so much when I wanted to try this technique on my pullover. I did it! Thanks for such great details and explanation.
Your instructions are very clear and therefore enjoyable to watch.......so thankful you made this video, it helped me instantly to remedy my tubular bind off for the pony tail hat for which I needed this particular edge.
Loved how you explained this, including your terms, knit wise, purl wise. I’m a combination continental knitter, and so I remounted some of my stitches so I could practice it just like you showed and then attempted a few where I didn’t remount my purls. It was much easier to get that 2nd purl stitch. A time when combination stitching is actually an advantage. Glad I decided not to remount my entire hat before doing tubular bind off. Thanks for a great tutorial!
Thank you very much for your video. This is the best way I’ve ever given. It’s so helpful. Although my brain has been confused for a long time, it’s clearly now. I like it! From Japan.
Thank you for another phenomenal tutorial! I’m knitting a sweater that calls for a tubular bind off, which makes sense now that I’ve seen your explanation of how it works. Until this pattern, I never even knew there was more than one way to bind off 😂 Now, not only do I know this way thoroughly, I’ll never forget it. I can’t wait to use it in all the places it applies (and sort of wish I’d used it in some other projects. It did take a long time, but so did the rest of the sweater, but now it will last a long time too! Also, thank you SO MUCH for saying how much of a tail to start off with. I am so grateful for that tip, and that it was right at the beginning. Love your tutorials! And now I want that Grand Staircase Sock pattern. Those are beautiful and were a joy to look at while watching your tutorial! ❤
This tutorial brilliant! Not only does it enable me to know what to do next if I lose concentration or put my knitting down, it shows how to finish off at the end. The other videos I found did not include either of those. Thank you so much!
There are so many complicated videos out there that I had given up hope of ever being able to do a tubular bind off. Your explanation is so clear that I didn’t even practice before binding off the hem of a sweater. Thank you so much for upping my knitting game. Stretchy hems are possible!😀
