For some reason, this got me thinking of Zen Mode’s video about fixing Johto. It was such a missed opportunity to not have a Bug-type Elite 4 member. In ZM’s video, he talks about changing the champion from Lance to Karen. Her message about using your favorite Pokemon matches the themes of the region and it comes off as more genuine because she uses a variety of Pokemon (like a champion) instead of stacking her team with pseudo legendaries and other OP Pokemon. The vagueness of “strong Pokemon” in the contest reinforces that idea of what makes a Pokemon strong is subjective. Hence why having an E4 member that reflects a noteworthy piece of the region with that messaging would fit in well thematically. So, let’s promote Bugsy and say goodbye to Bruno. We already have a Fighting-type gym leader in Johto with Chuck (whereas Will and Koga’s duplicate typings correspond to Kanto gym leaders). So, Bruno now runs the Fighting Dojo in Saffron City. The original owner went off on a journey and is now the guy who gives you a Tyrogue in Mt. Silver. Well, he might actually already be the same person since he’s the Karate Master in RBGY/FRLG and the Karate King in HGSS. Point is, Bruno is gone to make room for Bugsy. Since Jasmine only had a Steelix and two Magnemite and Chuck only had Primeape and Poliwrath, Bugsy now has Forretress and Heracross (two mons to reflect the unique heat-butting mechanic of the region) as well as Pinsir and Scizor (two mons that reflect the Bug Catching Contest). This then takes inspiration from The Golden Owl’s video on Cynthia. The reason why Spiritomb, Milotic, Lucario, and Garchomp all work really well on her Diamond/Pearl teams is because of how unlikely you are to encounter them before. Spiritomb required the underground and wifi, Milotic required finding Feebas in unique tiles within Mt Coronet’s internal bodies of water, Garchomp required back tracking to the route under cycling road where you’d have to find a hidden entrance and use Strength to get through (obviously this is different in Platinum), and Lucario is found through an optional side quest. So, now going back to my picks for Bugsy, a player could have easily missed all of these mons if they weren’t fully exploring the region and all it had to offer. And if we need to give him a 5th mon, you could either go with Ledian to mirror Koga’s Ariados or Shuckle for players who didn’t pick up the gift one in Cianwood City (or didn’t find any others via Rock Smash). How did a simple video on the Bug Catching Contest lead me to this entire rant on reworking HGSS? I have no idea lol Anyways, great vid! Always look forwards to your content! Keep it up!

The line "... using Pokemon with beautiful colors ..." is probably referring to shiny pokemon. Still never seen anyone find a shiny in the Bug Catching Contest though.
To those complaining that this video went up on a Monday: It was Tuesday in Japan (and Australia, NZ, etc) when the video went up!! Seems like a calculated play to me.
Buzzwole and Machamp inspired me to go from 375 to 225lbs. True story. It started as a joke about posing with my shiny fighting type team like the ginyu force. 😂
Love appreciation for little pieces of game like this. Really good and funny editing too. My favorite bugs are Heracross, Scizor, Ninjask and Shedinja. All cool designs but really cool competitively too!
As a pretty big Caterpie fan, thanks for acknowledging we exist and that the adorable worm Pokémon isn't just a joke. Caterpie is just special. I know it's a pretty common and weak Pokémon, but it tries its best and that's what's important. It's so easy to get lost in the weeds of numbers and whatnot. But to appreciate Caterpie, one doesn't have to do that. It's enough to love its simple, effective, and cute design. Caterpie is just great like that!
I randomly played my original silver and did a nuzlocke. I wanted pinsir or syther so I went to the bug catching competition. I just kept throwing balls at it and got it. I won 1st prize on my first time. I didn't know why people thought it was so hard but this makes it make sense. i didn't weaken it. I thought it might of had really high ivs but this makes much more sense.
I loved the bug catching contest as a kid, always fun to just go hunting around. I had that HGSS guide and used the everloving hell out of it, so I knew to just chuck balls at full HP mons for best results, but I loved just how diverse the contest felt after you got the national decks. Never found a shiny there, but just running into wild scyther and beedrill and what not felt so cool back when finding 3rd stage mons in the wild was still very taboo in the series
As someone who took there first steps into the world of pokemon in the johto region and a self proclaimed bug type trainer iv always been in love with the bug catching contests. If i had any problem, its just that all of the new bug mons added in johto (yanma, pineco, shuckle, of course best beetle heracross) arent able to be caught as a part of it! Id love to see a bug catching contest that expands itself even further if it ever returned, of course featuring my personal favorite bug type.... Golisopod!
A reliable sleep-inducing Pokemon that can tank hits is the best route, honestly. Butterfree with Sleep Powder works well during the main story, and then something like a greatly over-leveled Parasect with Spore can work well.
In PokeMMO, you can participate in community organised catching contests. 1 hour to catch given species of pokemon, with a score based on IV, nature and species. First place is often a shiny pokemon ! Totally emulates this feeling in a multiplayer way, with the added bonus of chatting with the other players

My brother and I shared Pokémon games as kids, so I don't actually know which of us played the bug catching contest the first time. But it doesn't matter. From the first we both fell in love with it. Wish they would bring it back, or add other similarly original and fun catch contest ideas like it. And the best bug Pokémon is Kleavor.
I love the Bug-Catching Contest. It's just one of many things that makes the world of GSC and HGSS feel alive and fleshed-out in a way that no other games in the series have captured thus far. My personal favorite bug is Frosmoth. It just BARELY edges out Heracross, by virtue of Ice being my favorite type.
genuinely so happy to see someone appretiate the bug catching contest like I have! It's such a charming part of gen 2 I get sucked into every time I pick up one of the games
This type of contest should be in the newest games. Or something like it. Like catch the biggest fish or find the best Pokemon IV wise. Also, I have a list of my highest scores in the Bug Catching Contest. My best score is 383.
I'd be so down for a community bug catching contest, that sounds amazing! My favourite bug is probably Yanmega, but it's a tough one for sure, they're all so cool!
This makes me wish that bw2 had a bug catching contests in castelia city, makes alot of sense cuz their leader is a bug leader, gen 5 added alot of bugs but also there's a perfect location(s) for it. Where you find Eevee or in the park just before you leave to the desert
my favorite memory is my shiny wurmple I found there there's no way to get a sport ball wurmple except for the bcc. I also spent almost a year hunting for it and its name is Dialga!
The bug catching contest is, no exaggeration, one of my favorite side modes in the series. It lets you catch Pokemon you couldn't get anywhere else, and makes you engage with the catching mechanics in a more challenging way than normal, but way more fairly than the Safari Zone. It also keeps you aware of different events being on different days, and as a nice bonus you get a free reward for participating.
Man I love the bug catching contest. Kid me played it a lot, also caught bugs irl. Nowadays I have a box with every possible bug pokemon in a sports ball, including evolutions! The only thing I haven't caught there yet is a shiny, and I doubt I ever will tbh
Around 12:10 the trainer says: weaken. Weakening pokémon isn't done purely by lowering their HP, inflicting status effects is also considered weakening them. Telling you to put them to sleep or paralyzing them would have been more explicit.
Long time reels hater, but I found your channel to be the only enjoyable one who posts pokemon reels with interesting content! Your full length vids are 🤌🤌🤌🤌 keep it up
I really like the bug catching contest, I honestly think it's better than the Safari zone has ever been. While the safari zone has always been an exercise in frustration, this is just lighthearted fun! And it's a great oppertunity to get a strong bug type pokemon too, which I usually go for.
Yay! It's really cool to see another Bug Catching Contest enthusiast 🎉 It would be really nice to host a PvP league every week with friends as the game does display your final score during the closing ceremony, so they can be shared and compared in real time! Best regards!
I always wished they had domw this format again just in a different environment. Like, a cave, or a canyon, or a fishing contest. So weird they didnt do it
I always assumed the "beautiful colors" line was alluding to shiny Pokémon, which at least held a little water in the originals because the scoring *and* shiny status were both based on high IVs. By HGSS, though, you could totally run into a shiny with terrible IVs and bomb the contest even though you would TOTALLY win for such a rare find if you were judged by a person and not an algorithm lol
Yup. I gotta start a new save on HG now. I feel like I will see something about HG/SS every year or so, and it causes me to have an irresistible itch to play it again.
I always wondered why certain Pokemon only show up in National Park when the contest is on. Like, do the event organizers release wild Scyther, Pinsir, and the like into the park for the content and then wrangle up the ones who weren’t caught when they’re done?
The worst part about the bug catching contest is that it's not every day of the week tbh, Soul Silver is really in a league of its own when it comes to mini games/events in the main series
I like the Bug-Catching Contest overall. I must admit, it has always seemed like it is MUCH harder to win in Gen 2, which is super frustrating because, unlike in HGSS, getting 1st place in the contest is the only way to get Sun Stones. Maybe that's just my experience, but yeah, getting 1st place in HGSS has always seemed a lot easier. Also, for competing against friends, I suppose you could get a group of people together who all do the Bug-Catching Contest at the same time and compare their scores once everyone is done. That would be pretty fun, actually.
When I was a kid, I caught a really good bug pokemon and used it on my team through the game. I specifically remember entering the bug contest, not catching anything, but winning the contest everytime with this Pokemon. But I've never heard of this working for other people, so maybe it's a false childhood memory? If I still had my original Pokemon Silver, I would definitely test whether this is real!
Hit up small ant, point crow and co, gather them in a livestream and let them have a bug catcher contest. Even if not in the same game, they have a point value at the end to compare. Would love to See it happen
One time I caught a scyther with my partner on low hp and 1 sport ball left and cut through the grass thinking "maybe I can find a full health scyther/pinsir and yolo my last ball at it" and I found a shiny butterfree ;-;
I know it's a minor thing, but not having Shinies contribute to score in HGSS kind of disappoints me. Like, maybe it doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things, but I sort of like it when the game recognizes these little cool features. By the same metric, I think it would be cool if other NPCs, like the ones that rate your pokemon's happiness or IVs also were to remark on it, with a little "Whoa, I've never seen a [Species] that looks like that before" or something.
I'm running an all bug team in Heartgold and it's msde me really appreciate them. The game was inspired by catching beetles, so this feels like such a hreat way to play. Theyre veryvweak but i love each of my little bugs
How come Yanma is only in the Route below and with a 1% encounter rate instead of here baffles me. And in GS they don't learn any Bug or Flying moves via Level Up. In Crystal they get Wing Attack at 37.
If they ever remade these games again, Shiny Pokemon should basically just be an instant win. If you find a 1in4000 chance thing during the event, you get special dialogue, you win
(Or at the very least such a massive boost you only risk losing if you caught a min-level 1 hp caterpie and your opponent has a max level full HP Sycther with multiple perfect IVs)

It was Tuesday in Tokyo when he uploaded it though...
@@ianlalonde5373 Tokyo is ahead of us? It was Sunday when this was live there. Unless he uploaded it like 8 days ago
@@dungeonpastor it’s currently 7:46 AM in Tokyo on Tuesday
So he uploaded at like 1 am in Tokyo@@ianlalonde5373, I stand corrected.
But then it would interfere with you competing in the contest tomorrow. 🙄
I feel super nostalgic for this now, I wish I could slap a completed version of heartgold in an emulator and do the post-game bug hunt now...
As a kid I caught a shiny beedrill on my silver cartridge. One of my best childhood memories
Hey it's me Max from the video and yes I said Galvantula is the best bug and I'm ready to fight for their honor.
I love these videos! Keep bringing them please!
Yup. I gotta start a new save on HG now. I feel like I will see something about HG/SS every year or so, and it causes me to have an irresistible itch to play it again.
Bro, you missed the opportunity to post this tomorrow, on a Tuesday...
he’s got all this engagement , big brain move
But then it would interfere with you competing in the contest tomorrow. 🙄
You fools, posting on a Monday was a plan for engagement farming!
Jokes aside, great video as always.
Im 100% down for a monthly community bug catching contest or something to that effect
"Everyone is having fun" - *proceeds to show Danny DeVito decidedly not having fun*
I always wondered why certain Pokemon only show up in National Park when the contest is on. Like, do the event organizers release wild Scyther, Pinsir, and the like into the park for the content and then wrangle up the ones who weren’t caught when they’re done?
The worst part about the bug catching contest is that it's not every day of the week tbh, Soul Silver is really in a league of its own when it comes to mini games/events in the main series
imagine going to a contest in real life and you lose so they hand you an empty cicada shell as a consolation prize 💀
Is that sonic heroes theme music in the background?? Sounds hella familiar, and I'm feeling the nostalgia lol
I love your channel. It’s fun and informative, most of all it brings me back, reminds me of a simple of a simpler time
It's Thursday AND Saturday. Why did no one tell me? Thank you Droomish.
The real prize are the new bug friends we made along the way in the bug catching contest.
I would 100% be up for a community bug catching contest
Ironically, I am actually watching this video on a Tuesday.
So what you're saying is that I need to go in and win a Bug Contest by catching a Shiny Bug Pokemon? Challenge accepted.
"The guy who enters you..." - Droomish
Maybe the beautiful colors is referring to shinies? After all shinies have different colors from regular pokemon.
Omg, you're so right. It IS Tue, Thur or Sat :o
The best bug is Mega Pinsir. It's still a favorite among all pokemon over here.
droomish always here with the animal facts
Watching this after midnight so it's actually Tuesday
I could never win the bug catching contest in Soul Silver as a kid. I tried so many times I even found a shiny during one.
I still lost
comments: it's not tuesday
me in Australia at 4am on tuesday: owo
I love that feature of game inside a game
One time I caught a scyther with my partner on low hp and 1 sport ball left and cut through the grass thinking "maybe I can find a full health scyther/pinsir and yolo my last ball at it" and I found a shiny butterfree ;-;
More Shroomish Adventures!!! 😊
Pokemon with beautiful colors winning is a reference to shinies
If they ever remade these games again, Shiny Pokemon should basically just be an instant win. If you find a 1in4000 chance thing during the event, you get special dialogue, you win
(Or at the very least such a massive boost you only risk losing if you caught a min-level 1 hp caterpie and your opponent has a max level full HP Sycther with multiple perfect IVs)
I love the bug type probably my favorite type I really can’t choose but probably one of the spider mons
The real best bugs are the friends we make along the way
It makes sense a healthier bug is worth more points. Healthier bug probably has a better gleam.
