Those of us who planned this honoring of deceased 9/11 Responders and Volunteers stressed the distinction of the names being "called" as opposed to "being read". The responder's name is spoken out loud, calling to them, invoking their presence in the present moment, for a moment. Calling The Names is an active way of remembering those who helped in the days, weeks and months following the September 11th attacks and are no longer with us. May they rest in peace.
