This was a great talk with these artists. As a student in the early '80s at SVA in NYC I studied Fashion Illustration with Jack Potter and also took many drawing classes with Jack. I wanted to be a fashion illustrator and really concentrated on my drawing...btw I had no art education prior to SVA ,of any kind ,other than watching my dad draw but I drew constantly and studied anatomy books and comics...so hearing you all drive the fact of the importance of drawing often and drawing from life was great. One of my fashion illustrations was selected as one of the best works of my graduating class for the SVA Portfolio in '83 but Jack told me to set my sights elsewhere in illustration because he could see the market opportunities changing. I was getting editorial work even before graduating and did some fashion assignments for Working Woman and Working Mother magazines but other work was coming in too. After three years I acquired an agent, Evelyne Johnson Associates and moved into the children's book market. 85+ books and many awards later, I'm happy here and still working. After getting married and moving to the Hudson Valley in '86 I was invited to teach drawing at Marist College after an article about my work appeared in a local newspaper. That course was fashion Drawing in the growing Fashion Program...I totally embraced the opportunity and continued to teach fashion portfolio, shoe design and hat design. I now teach digital illustration in the Art and Digital Media Department. I still push the draw, draw, draw mantra. I'm happy to still be a working artist and teacher and I will share this session with our Fashion Program and with my own students. Thanks for your time everyone and to SOI for presenting this.
