Dressing is also an art. You can express so many things through it, it's not only about being beautiful, it's about feeling good with yourself, and it includes how you're feeling and your personality. It's really sad that some people look at it as a simple part of trading. Everything you can express by your clothes just makes it a huge part of acting.
Gossip girl had so many flawless styles. Mad Men had some suits which really haven't changed that much and all the women in the same modest style. Gossip Girl really should be #1 or #2 easily.
You should check out The Paradise, The Time in Between, and Velvet. The last two are Spanish but they are all available in Netflix, therefore include subtitles.
Uh...what about Miami Vice? A television show which defined 80s fashion, spawned multiple clothing lines, and is what most people thing back to when remembering what clothing was like back then? Nothing here really defined a decade's fashion like Miami Vice did.
+DisneyWithAva. Yes they are extreamly beautiful. But they go against everything costume designing is all about. Completely inaccurate with no regard to character status, fabric availability, historical accuracy ect. Basically imagine if the people on mad men wore 2016 fashion, it could look breathtaking but it wouldn't give a feeling/picture of the reality in the early 60s.
+Alma Boij The video says nothing about historical accuracy and with the Renaissance you generally have to choose between looking good and being historically accurate.
In some time periods that might be true (80s anyone?). Buuut imagine the insanely incredible dresses people wore in their portraits from around about that time period. ex. Anne of Cleeves, Jane Seymour, Elizabeth I, and not least Mary Stuart herself. There is so much to work from and be inspired by. Just think of Marys execution gown for example... Powerful shit... I just think its lazy going to an Alexander McQueen show and getting it straight of the hanger in 2016 and putting it on 1500s Mary Stuart... And maybe the costume designers doing their job wasn't a criteria, but if not, i think it should be. I think its disrespectful to the ones who actually do their jobs, research and all. (but i bet the actors are grateful! 1500s clothing...probably not the most snugly attire) No disrespect. Im just very passionate about costume designing.
Alma Boij It wouldn't even make sense to make the costumes historically accurate when the plot isn't historically accurate and if they wanted a historically accurate plot they would make a documentary, not a drama.
I agree with you half the way. Absolutely reign is not at all historically accurate. And when they have chosen to take such liberties with the story of Marys life why not do so with the costumes? I haven't watched it very intensely, just about 9 episodes, because i love Mary Stuart so much. (I love it when historical women gets their stories told, although in Reign thats not really the case...) So i can't say exactly what happens on the show, but you would have to be a fool to believe its all accurately based on her life. If i am not mistaken there are some supernatural elements to the story even... Which would excuse the costumes, if Mary wasn't a real historical person. (irrelevant to the costumes but i just don't get why they had to make it about Mary instead of making up a person.) But I do not think the only time you should be accurate is in a documentary. And most serious documentaries (the ones that aren't simply for entertainment like the ones on history channel... ones that aren't even interested in telling true events but more about weird historical speculation and such... Anne Boleyn's 6th finger for example...) doesn't even have action recreations.... Im trying to commune what 4 years of education in the subject has banged into my head in a youtube comment... But whatever.. Its unfair to the people it portrays.. (i know their dead) and it talks down to the audience. Because a costume can tell you so much. The costumes tell you about the extreme gender inequalities, and the way sexuality was viewed ect. All things of extreme import, and to truly understand and comprehend a person that lived 500 years ago. Understand the decisions they made and how their time defined them. Especially for women for whom the things they wore wasn't just clothing, it was sometimes the only way for them to communicate, clothing is and was a statement. To end this long ass comment... Sry... :) Im down when its shows like Merlin, BBCs Robin Hood (talk about historical inaccuracy, denim jeans? Really) Ect. But as soon as real historical people are involved i think one should aim for accuracy in both story and costume. Reign has reimagined Mary to a point where she is barely recognizable so its kind of ok... maybe... But it does rub me the wrong way that they couldn't just made up someone for it to be about... Irrelevant to this discussion... Enough of wasting your time...
I kinda hoped American Horror Story Hotel would be on here. The whole 5th season is basically a 20th century fashion history class and runway show interrupted by blood, gore, and monsters. Also do not get me started on The Countess.
I didn't watch the show, but has anyone pointed out that Ugly Betty's "B" necklace was a knock-off of one in a portrait of Queen Anne Boleyn? A beautiful visual of Betty's cluelessness.
Agree with all of the picks, except with Gossip Girl being number 3 instead of number 1. Just because it's become a habit to call Sex And The City the most stylish show, doesn't mean it actually is. SATC did not have the couture fashion we enjoyed in GG. All of the pieces in GG were total high fashion. From Serena and Blair's numerous Jenny Packham (and not only) dresses, to Chuck's tailored suits and purple socks. Gossip Girl's wardrobe is a work of art that exceeds SATC's by far.
While all the ladies get to wear different style and colorful dresses since ancient times. The men get the worse part of fashion all wearing the same suits, only changes are colors or ties. So boring.
If this had come out now, "Elite" and "High Seas" should have totally been in top 3! Those two Spanish shows are fashion goals for the bygone and the GenZ era.
downton abbey, ugly betty, gossip girl are amazing. But I think you're not including british shows because absolutely fabulous was also the greatest thing. Also the mindy project could be on this. Gossip girl is number one though, the show of my life.
I can tell young kids put these together... Some of those picks are just Sex and The City regurgitations.... The comments section has better choices....
Gossip Girl used to give me LIFE. I wanted Blair and Serena's wardrobe sooo much!
Truth

Style inspiration: Blair Waldorf, Olivia Pope, and Charlotte York
Reign should be here. The dresses are bloody gorgeous
Niamh Casey Truth
But the dresses are historically inaccurate, meaning they wouldn't have been fashion forward for the 16th century.
gossip girl should be 2°, and mad men, 3°.
Giggles nah. Gossip Girl is number 1
Girls should NOT be on this list. That show doesn't even merit a honorable mention.
Gossip girl will always be #1
I expected scream queens to be on here
+Grace Mathisen ugh ew no
+TIAMARIA go fuck yourself
Siri lmao you get butthurt so easily kid
Gossip Girl should be #1 for sure
Revenge should be more than just a honourable mention

Sara Carrie Bradshaw also slayed
Gossip girl had so many flawless styles. Mad Men had some suits which really haven't changed that much and all the women in the same modest style. Gossip Girl really should be #1 or #2 easily.

Teen wolf?! What shirt and jeans?
I totally agree with having a religious experience at the manolo blahnik at no 1.
No Call The Midwife? I love all the vintage fashion in that show.
You should check out The Paradise, The Time in Between, and Velvet. The last two are Spanish but they are all available in Netflix, therefore include subtitles.
Kabita Acharya I love Velvet and the Paradise. Have you seen the cable girls?
Uh...what about Miami Vice? A television show which defined 80s fashion, spawned multiple clothing lines, and is what most people thing back to when remembering what clothing was like back then? Nothing here really defined a decade's fashion like Miami Vice did.

+DisneyWithAva.

I kinda hoped American Horror Story Hotel would be on here. The whole 5th season is basically a 20th century fashion history class and runway show interrupted by blood, gore, and monsters. Also do not get me started on The Countess.

Agree with all of the picks, except with Gossip Girl being number 3 instead of number 1. Just because it's become a habit to call Sex And The City the most stylish show, doesn't mean it actually is.
