Tarot "collecting" becomes hoarding when you can't say no to a single deck. When your decks start taking up so much space that's it's become obvious clutter. People will do whatever they want rather it's rational or not.
Personally i struggled with "collecting" until i realized that i didn't vibe with 90% of the decks i had. So now after minimizing/ getting rid of over 100 decks my focus is on the tarot itself. Not decks.... Tarot.
Aka learning the cards and actually READING them. Not having a bunch of decks collecting dust on a shelf.
Good luck to anyone reading this who is struggling with tarot consumption. Don't give up on it. If you truly desire to free yourself of tarot overwhelm you can do it. You have to be sit down and go through the decks and be honest with yourself.

Regarding the issue of watching flip thoughts, I like the point you made about ‘finding joy in the joy’ of the Tarot Tuber presenting a deck that they love. There are a couple who spring to mind who really make me feel wonderful as I watch them go through the cards. But I know now not confuse that with ‘the deck is special, I need it’. It’s more that the charisma and enthusiasm of the presenter is special, and I don’t need to buy the deck to share their delight in it. It can be enough just to feel the feels with them! Thanks for helping me figure this out! 🙏🏻

Very thoughtful response with lots of good tips. It's a complex issue, which I guess for each individual comes down to "how many is too many for me?" and "does the activity of purchasing more decks bring me happiness or has it become unhealthy for some reason?" And so much more.

I love the grounded way you talk about this. I am glad it is not a problem of mine - if anything, I think mine would be the impulse to want to buy a lot of artbooks by artists I love. I am still stuck in between wanting to support them and my finances too.
One way of dealing with deck urges is that I take out all my decks and look at each one, saying why I love it and comparing it to the deck I have the urge to buy. By the time I finished with my collection, I will be too exhausted to buy the deck haha! I am not as deep-thinking as you XD

This is great! I love your practical application to guard against over consumption. I’ve also been tracking my emotions with spending but I want to track how much I have and costs. I always challenge myself to hold myself accountable while allowing myself to “have”. I’ve notice switching from clothes and shoes shopping, to home stuff, then tarot stuff over a couple of decades… but now finding ways like coloring and walking as healthier consumptions to engage.
It’s hard… there was a time when people bought expensive pieces of art (before mass production and sell), hung up the art in their house, and walked past it all the time sometimes not looking at it anymore. We go through phases of interests to fuel the downtime of life… and it is for us to decide how that time is spent. Many people (and men) don’t sit around and ask themselves if they watch too many sports, own too many tools, or go to many games… the question is “How do you want to spend your time?” And does it bring wholeness, fullness, and contentment (not joy) to your life?

This was such a great video presented in such a balanced way. Thank you Juli. Pressure and guilt should not be put on to anyone whether it’s because they have one deck, or they have 1000 decks.
You are so right, it is down to the individual. If they are feeling overwhelmed then it is healthy for them to let go of things. If somebody can comfortably manage their collection, can afford to buy decks, and it brings some joy then it’s nobody else’s concern.
I appreciated hearing your voice on this subject. 🙏🏼❤️

This is such a touchy subject. One I feel could cut both ways and is dependent on so many other factors. Having access to all the decks would seem like a dream come true for many. But I have found myself adapting a "curating" mindset when I have to make a decision to purchase for my customers. Believe me, it's not every deck out there I am open to having on our shelves. As a business person, I have to look at the broad spectrum and try to navigate everyone's interests. This may seem counterintuitive, but there have been times when I've talked a customer out of buying a deck or advise them to give themselves some time before purchasing another deck. Yes, I know I'm in the business of selling, but if you're buying a deck 3-4 times a week, I'm going to say something about it. Usually, I'm asking some of the questions you have posed here. I find that 99% of folks are receptive. After spending time in my dungeon, the initially disagreeable 1%, do come around. :)
I do agree that however one decides it should bring you joy. And yes that feeling of satisfaction can be shared with a reviewer without having to purchase the deck, fabric, shoes what have you.
    Okay, I've blathered on.
BTW-I'm curious to see you wish list. I heard the "library" has re-opened. LOL!!!

I absolutely love hearing the perspective of a businessperson who has to decide what decks to offer her customers! That's fantastic that you're looking out for your regulars when you see that they're slipping into overconsumption. 💜Shoes! Sigh, I have a friend who also collects beautiful shoes, and I feel like I'd be a collector too, if I could find ones that fit. I'm reduced to buying kids shoes most of the time 😩LOL, a couple decks on my wishlist are from MPC, and then there's the Hoodoo Tarot, which I'm going to buy. Also the Star Spinner Tarot has my curiosity 🧐Thank you so much for watching and sharing your thoughts, Queen Auset! 💜🖤

Something I have found helpful to keep consuming in check is to store some decks away. I feel that most of my decks fall into a season, Spring, Fall etc. So each season I pack away some decks and bring out others. This works so well for me because each season I feel that I have gone shopping and have new things, even if only from my own closet. It does help me appreciate my decks more and I can also identify if one really does need to be let go. (Like clothes I guess!)

I was certainly getting a lot of decks in a short period of time. I do agree with you. It can be an underlining issue in ones life that leads to addiction of anykind. We all have to take care of ourselves and our finances and families first, then our collecting habits second. I went from 2 to over 150 decks in a short time. No regrets, but I took stock and realized I need to slow down aloooot.

Very valid discussion. I’ve noticed the long term collectors eventually shift to a place of quite finicky choices of decks, decks that have a specific purpose to compliment their collection… first a large and broad collection then going thru several rehoming & culling phases and eventually arriving at a place where we only want to purchase a deck that fills a specific need. For sure the tarot deck offerings out there are SO massive, it would be hard to be new to collecting, I’d want everything too! Basically I’m suggesting that hopefully we reach an equilibrium eventually so that it’s not harming our livelihood any longer. Yeah 2021 has been brutal, my house looks like a hoarder from too many retail therapy outings but I’m committed now to using all the damn stuff or get rid of it!

Thank you so much for this! I definitely struggle with this issue as a newby who has gone apeshit with deck buying but I really resonated with your connection to retail therapy generally and over self-indulgence as a way of coping with grief and loss. I've been experiencing over consumption as a coping mechanism for 27 years since my mom died when I was 30 ( I've always called it "filling the black hole in my heart with stuff) and really working on observing, moderating and re-directing my compulsion to nurturing my creative and emotional life as an artist and mother but it is an ongoing process and one in which I am finally done chastising myself for and more able to see clearly and work on. Firstly, colouring book cat butts? Love it! And fellow fidgeter here...the struggle is real.
Lots of great tips here, thank you for sharing Juli. I particularly like your questions and I have certainly asked myself some of these over the years.
I've never felt my deck buying got out of hand but a couple of years ago I could see it going on that direction and I needed to do something.
My way to deal with it was to do a Depth Year and to completely stop watching deck walkthroughs, avoid Kicktarter etc for 2019. It made a profound difference in my life (I applied it to everything, not just tarot).
My acquistion of decks had been very minimal since the depth year; and I've reached a point in where I can happily watch walkthroughs, like the look of a deck, be happy that it exists in the world and yet not need to own it.
But I want to cull/refine my collection but I'm finding I'm hitting resistance in letting go of decks (which is something I need to work through).
Thank you for sharing your journey with this issue.

Making people laugh, while watching a video on this topic is a talent, Juli! xx
A failed depth year and a second-round worked wonders for me! I didn't manage to follow my plans because life happened and my mind was all over the place... but they made me realize how I act and react to situations, which for me was eye-opening. During that time, like you, I started tracking and journaling my purchases, my habits and my behaviours... and that helped me a lot! Sometimes life is too stressful ...and we need something to take our mind off things. I'm trying not to beat myself up for my slip-ups. Instead, I try to find ways to avoid them...like not watching unboxings when I am stressed, using a wishlist, trying to find decks in my collection that could serve the same need, asking myself questions similar to yours etc. This year I think I have been doing well. Since buying books is another love of mine...when I feel too eager to buy something, I search for free ebooks instead! This has saved me countless times...! (if only I could do something similar with eating! lol)
Now, the next step for me is to face my resistance to letting things go. I don't feel uncomfortable with how many decks I have...but I do have more than I can work with in-depth. And I also have some that I have outgrown. So culling some could be nice! :)
Thank you for this video. Having watched Mixtress Rae's videos a few days ago, I kind of expected you to do a VR! Tackling hard topics head-on is so like you! (in my head anyway!lol)

Great video sweet lady. I am going to keep buying and culling decks also. I do not have any issues with collecting, however I sure did in the beginning of my tarot journey. I have definitely not bought way more decks than I have bought. I love seeing deck walk throughs and first impressions and deck reviews and spreads and all of the above because those actually help me buy less than more. I use those types of videos as a tool in my purchasing habits. I can definitely see where it can easily become out of hand but I do believe that isn't a tarot problem as you said, that is more about filling a need inside, that the next purchase is going to fill and never truly does. It is merely replacing something else. Those questions are perfect for self reflection. Thank you for sharing your voice on this sensitive and very valid topic. 💜🌞💖

Yes! I love all of this. 💖 If collecting decks brings you joy then it’s not a problem for you, and that is great, but if it is causing you stress or negative consequences then there may be an underlying issue there that is worth exploring in more detail. And opening that conversation up to others is generally a really healthy way to do that.
When I started on TarotTube I went on a deck buying splurge, and my collection grew from less than 5 to almost 70. But honestly, when I discover a new passion it’s always been my way to go all in to start with, and then eventually I do tend to slow down (as I have with the tarot now) so I am pretty ok with how quickly my collection grew. Last year I challenged myself not to buy any decks and it really helped me to become so much more discerning about what I do actually end up purchasing.

    • @Peekaboorose

I really loved how you talked about this. “At the end of the day your collection should be bringing you joy, it should not be a source of stress.” 👏👏👏👏 Yes, that is absolutely the bottom line that cuts through so much of the discourse surrounding this issue…if your collection is bringing you joy then great! No issues! If it’s not, then it’s something that should be fair game for all of us to talk about and work through. I totally agree that there’s that natural cycle that people go through as new readers (“newbies going apeshit buying decks” exactly 😆) and I definitely went through it as well, not when I discovered tarot but when I discovered tarot social media…I had less than ten decks for about 15 years of my tarot-reading life until I discovered tarottube several years ago and started getting exposed to so many more decks and my collection exploded….but the rate of acquisition has slowed dramatically as I’ve figured out what works for me and now it’s much easier to say no and resist fomo over new decks that I can tell are not in my wheelhouse. But as you said, there will always be inflow and outflow in my collection and that’s part of the fun. 😊💖
    (Also….cat butts…..I love it 😆😆😆)

I understand some of the frustration others sometimes feel. I’ve heard people complain that indie decks are becoming too expensive and are pricing out those on more limited budgets. The fact that they are limited can make it harder to wait longer than 2 weeks. That said if you want certain decks you often can break up payments if you really want one. Decks like Spirit Seekers latest sold out quickly.

I also have a rhythm in which I work with my decks that allows me to enjoy all (okay most…some need to go!) of the decks in my collection…resulting in me.not having to experience emotional stress or anxiety either. That said I have fallen prey to FOMO a few times, which has resulted in some, “What the hell was I thinking?” moments…LOL. I think it’s good to check in with and be honest with ourselves about our motivations so that we can have a healthy relationship with our collections and our practices. ❤️ And I have found that as time goes on I am being much more discerning about which decks I buy as I’ve become much more connected with what my personal practice looks like. I appreciated hearing your thoughts…and you’re always good for a laugh. 🤣🤗
    P.s. I’m really sorry 2021 has been such a s*** year. Sending love! 💕

Thank you so much, Jen 💜 Ugh, FOMO with decks is one of my biggest downfalls! 🙈

So I've been contemplating this subject. I've made some lists like you, BUT I haven't REALLY implemented it in conjunction with self restraint. And then, this video pops up in my suggested vids.
Thank you YOUniverse and thank you for this perfectly timed video!

Awww thank you so much for taking the time to watch! Self-restraint is so *hard*, especially when it comes to decks! I still struggle--it's a fluid process. And yes, coloring cat butts is balm for the soul! 😂 😂

Love the idea of a notebook. I have a spreadsheet on Google drive, but meh, using my iPad to update is a nuisance. Great suggestions for questions at the end too. Thanks.

I hate using my iPad for that kind of stuff too. Thank you, LIli! 💜
