Your 110% one of the few people I value their opinion on....Oh, and love the honesty in keeping in that minor fall at 6:39 (not everyone would do that....but it's honest!). This board looks amazing and really glad they went with more 'POWER' on this board...it's not speed they need (even though the board has it). The lower center of gravity and better footpads...all great improvements. As a 220lb rider I really need the extra power at times.......Hope you got your rest! Great job on this video!

      @@dustroy3197as a 230 lb rider of the one wheel xr, it gets pretty rough sometimes. The power of the board affects both your acceleration and your braking, so attacking hills is tough. I've had to jump off going down steep hills because the motor wasn't strong enough to slow me down. If you're on flat ground, it shouldn't be any harder for you than anyone else. Maybe raise the tire pressure a bit to carry the weight better and increase your range. Once you're comfortable on flat ground, try out some shallow slopes, find the limits of your board. You'll have a lot of fun!

    • @nicoaleman
      @nicoaleman 10 месяцев назад +8

      Floatwheel ADV is definitely a competent board and has torque for days. GT S-Series is easily taking it in the top speed category though. That voltage is insane, and from the things I've heard, sounds like it's capable of faster speeds than pretty much any of the VESC-based builds have been able to achieve so far.
      Which I mean personally, I'd rather trade off speeds over like 32mph in exchange for more low end torque any day, so I'd rather the torquier Floatwheel over the higher speed GTS, at least specs wise. But I mainly ride trails, might be a different story for those who ride streets primarily

    • @JesseDriftwood
      @JesseDriftwood  10 месяцев назад +13

      I’ve got a float wheel motor sitting at my office, but I’ve been waiting for the rest of the board to show up. And yet it can't beat the specs of a VESC board at half the price.

    • @JesseDriftwood
      @JesseDriftwood  10 месяцев назад

      @@ManifoldSkyI’m riding a floatwheel ADV right now. It’s fantastic, but far from perfect. The thing is super heavy and the handle on the nose (and tail which I’m glad they included) are way too small. Riding it is great, not riding sucks ass. It’s part of the reason I don’t ride my EUC often. I use these for a lot of commuting and city errands so being able to hold it is key.
      But for the record, aside from some small build quality and form issues, and the kinda janky setup process, the ride is very good. They did a great job with this motor.

    • @ManifoldSky
      @ManifoldSky 10 месяцев назад

      @@JesseDriftwood And I have the adv Pro (though I'm not riding it, because I bricked the ESC). It IS heavy, but not that different than the GT, and I don't use the deck handles on any of them all that much, other than to maneuver the board around. But the problem is less that they're to small than that they're in the wrong place, way too close to the front edge, forcing you to grip with just your fingertips. But the maghandle is an ergonomically better experience anyway.
      The set up process sucks, especially if you have the newer ESC, since the new set up process is slightly different than what Tony, put on the video, just enough to make it problematic (which is what eventually led to me bricking the ESC, when the ESC powered off before completing the configuration).
      And my GT also shit the bed, so I’m stuck on a Pint or my Evolve GTR.
      Looking at either an InM Four otion V12 or a Begode T4.
      But regardless of any of that, it’s still better than to GT-S, an almost half the price, and I can fix things myself and upgrade components without some company trying to sabotage me every step of the way.

    • @JesseDriftwood
      @JesseDriftwood  10 месяцев назад

      @@ManifoldSky I hear you, I just think these two boards are quite different from each other. You’re right that the GT was also quite heavy, which is why being 2 pounds lighter on the GTS is so nice. For general commuting purposes it’s much nicer to just move around and pick up and stuff. I regretfully don’t install the manhandle on my ADV since I generally prefer the deck handles, but I’ll have to go back and install it now because these ones are useless.
      I agree that right to repair is generally a good thing, but I don’t the think the US is setup for this to exist. If FM products were anything like the ADV right now you can be sure that the CPSC would have fully shut them down. I don’t know what the solution is that makes these boards safer to appease CPSC, and allows users to replace and repair any component they want. What do you think is a reasonable solution to this issue?

    • @ManifoldSky
      @ManifoldSky 10 месяцев назад

      @@JesseDriftwood The solution to the repair issues are simple, since all these issues were created entirely on purpose by FM. The hide behind the DMCA to prevent repair by digitally signing and encrypting the signal between the ESC and BMS, so they communicate with each other to verify they are authentic FM parts. If you try to replace one or the other, you brick the board. They also rigged the BMS to brick if you ever disconnect it from the battery, and the only way to recover is to send the entire board to FM in CA, at YOUR expense. Etc.. They claim this is for rider safely but this is bullshit. It is entirely to prevent end users from repairing or even just upgrading their boards.
      The safely issues are related to the boards being under powered, and the ESC programming being faulty, so that, in some edge cases, the ESC asks the BMS for more power than it can put out, and since the BMS can't comply, it just shuts off power entirely, nosediving and launching the rider off the front. This can not be fixed by these feature updates like haptic buzz and beeps! Once the CPDC figures this out (possibly after a few more people die) FM will be right back where they started.
      That's the entire point of the GT-S. They're getting to hide this, claiming it's about speed, but the only reason to go to a 100v+ system is to create system overhead to provide headspace for the BMS/ESC to respond to these edges cases and send a voltage spike to the motor.
      Why would the CPSC shut down Floatwheel? There is no indication that the adv suffers from this issue that I've seen, and if it did, it could most likely be solved with a simple change to the VESC programming. Also, unlike FM, Tony is not marketing it as a general purpose commuter device.

    • @slickness8892
      @slickness8892 10 месяцев назад +1

      You would have a blast and if you stay on smooth paved paths, you can float along without falls. The learning timeframe would be the concern but can also be done at a pace that reduces fall chances. You probably would have to jump off at slow speed a few times while getting comfortable with the curve of the wheel. The learning curve is usually pretty quick though. I'm 55 and have fallen a few times on my XR with street riding (either climbing hill too fast or bumpy pavement). Now just enjoy the float on mostly smooth paths on the GT and haven't had any concern of fall (well maybe trying to go around the occasionally squirrely people on paths). Still wear a helmet, wrist guards and front side elbow pad just in case. The reserve power of the GT and GT S allows easy cruising at 16-19mph without worry of nosedive.

      I’ve got a float wheel motor in my office and I’m currently waiting for the rest of it to show up. I’m sure it’ll be a great option for some people, but IMO it’s a different target audience. Loads of people won’t want to buy using crypto, or want to assemble themselves, or want to support what seems like a Chinese clone, or trust a companies first product etc. I’m not saying these things are necessarily good reasons, but they are going to compel a lot of people.
      The floatwheel is also heavier and (subjectively speaking) a bit uglier haha.
      I’ve followed Tony’s process since the beginning and think he’s made a lot of really great decisions, and it’s super cool to see the BTS of product development. Either way I’m fascinated by the progress of the tech and am really curious to see how this sport evolves in the future.

  • @ManifoldSky
    @ManifoldSky 10 месяцев назад

    I guess by "fast" you mean significantly slower than the GT in terms of actual top speed (as opposed to artificial limits like the start of pushback, which was raised by virtue of boosting voltage with a single series battery that is unable to sustain the high voltage output for very long, thus resulting in lower range and a higher chance of nosediving after the battery falls below a much higher threshold).
    The purpose of this board is to address the CPSC recall complaint by boosting top voltage output to a level that it can handle Amperage draw spikes that cause all other Onewheels to spontaneously nosedive, with NO advance warning, when the ESC is tasked by the terrain and load to put out more current that the BMS can handle, and the ESC/BMS responds by cutting all power to the motor.
    Forcing firmware updates that install haptic buzz do NOT address this real world issue, and will NOT satisfy the CPSC once the reports of serious injury continue to come in, from people riding updated boards.

FM are getting hit from both sides on this issue. The government wants them to crack down way harder, customers sue if they get injured, and bankruptcy is a real possibility if either of those things get slightly out of hand.
      How do you make a board that is both safer for the consumer, while also allowing them to customize or change parts themselves?

      @@simbadlemarin1815 It isn’t about the complexity, it’s about the level of risk involved. If I swap the BMS on my electric bike and it fails while I’m riding it, no problem. If the same thing happens while I’m doing 20~25mph on a Onewheel, the results can be catastrophic.
      Imagine doing the exact same maintenance on your car but knowing that if you made a mistake your car would fall 1000 feet out of the sky.
      The issue here isn’t whether or not you personally are competent enough to do the work, but what happens when people who aren’t competent enough do the work, get injured, and then sue FM.
      As I said before, I’m torn on this issue. I’m just arguing the other side because it feels like so many people have no nuance at all on the issue, they just get angry.
      I genuinely do understand your point, and there’s a lot I agree with. I think ethically if I purchase a product, than I have the right to do anything I want to that product. It’s mine, I own it.
      But the general public doesn’t give a shit about that. Look at the public perception of onewheels now after the CPSC shit. I’ve gotten phone calls and emails and texts from so many random family members because they think onewheels are all being mandatorily recalled because they are suddenly killing users. Imagine just how much more prevalent that would be in a world where there’s a huge increase in DIY repairs.
      I agree with TFL that FM should look into teaming up with certified repair shops to swap and repair certain critical components, and sell other ones. And they should make getting that accreditation available widely and quickly to as many cities as possible. But what do I know? I’m just a RUclipsr who likes making movies and riding electric vehicles, I don’t know how to run a massive company.
