This is one of my all-time favorite OPs from a criminally underrated show, I'm so happy to see all the incredible symbolism broken down and explained here.
The shot of the hospital staff at 5:35 ish i would have said was meant to draw a similarity between the staff and a pack of wolves, hunting their prey, given that wolves hunt in packs and the composition of the scene ( Gold wolven eyes amongst a forest, staring at the audience with malice ) and Werewolves ( A combination of man and wolf ) are typically juxtaposed alongside vampires ( Shiki in this case ) as monsters in human skin.
Just gunna say this as a PSA to anyone watching this video who hasn't seen the show: PLEASE STOP WATCHING. While this is a great video it does ruin a lot of the great moments and set-pieces later on in the show, so I implore all those who haven't yet seen the show to PLEASE do as it is amazing, and then come back and appreciate this really great analysis.
I love Shiki, let's just get that out of the way. I think the build, pacing and psychotic finale are just brilliant. As to the one criticism, that the show is trying to get you to sympathize with the Shiki, I disagree. I think it's showing the unfortunate and scary things humanity sometimes has to do to preserve itself. It's like war: it forces you to kill to save your family, some do it reluctantly, some embrace with enjoyment. It might be unavoidable but it's hard to go back to being civilized afterwards.
Yeah people always get angry at feeling bad for the Shiki or the humans when really its showing how far each race will go to do what's "right" but end up destroying each other. Its a big metaphor.
in the end the nurse does exactly what all the other shiki couldn't stand to confront that they have an option to except their death and not kill. as well as the "main character," who does this in a more dramatic way.
toriloveSubarukun I thought the human's behavior was reasonable, and I'm fairly certain the show knows that. It's the characters you've followed throughout the entire series acting out of self defense. Not to say I didn't have slight sympathy for the Shiki, but that didn't negatively impact the satisfaction of the humans turning the tables in my eyes.
@@CalebCraft10 I agree with you, but at the same time torturing someone to death by slowly incinerating them was a bit harsh. I liked the guy who put them out of their misery though. He seemed like a nice guy. Probably because he had like 30 seconds of screen time.
Draculian vampirism (like the kind we see in Shiki) is also transferred by kissing someone who's either on the brink of death or already undead but even taking that into account it still works either way.
Gotta say I never heard of this series before your OP review so I watched it before watching your synopsis. An extremely sad series that didn't scare me, but definitely had me questioning things and feeling a lot more than I care to admit. Thanks for the exposure to Shiki
Just finished the series now, and I gotta say, I was disappointed. Not bad at all, a good-ass show, but I never really felt that bad for the Shiki by the end. I was with the Doctor all the way, the whole thing of "I never picked this life" is bullshit when they are forcing others into that hellish existence as well. The show never scared me either, I kept waiting for something terrifying to happen, but it never did. I was also disappointed in how character arcs were resolved, just ham-fistedly killing characters instead of giving them development. Also, the characters developed in the start of the series pretty much fell by the wayside, Megumi, especially had very little going on by the end. Still, I found the Doctor and the Junior Monk to be pretty compelling characters as they are both pretty messed up in their own ways. Doctor is a hero tho, for sure. Well, those are my unsolicited thoughts anyway.
TheHaloBlader Just where were you and all the people who think like you who showed up to comment this video but not other shiki related videos? I totally agree with you. Haha I liked the show as well, but I couldn't feel that much sympathy for the shiki. Whereas it would seem that everyone in the audience thought of them as puppies once the sob stories and the time for retaliation descended upon their vampiric asses. It's like they just want to bash the human species at every little opportunity.
I have to disagree with being with the doctor all the way. I can't forgive him for what he did to his wife. She had no understanding of what was going on and who she became. All she knew was that the man she loved was torturing her relentlessly and the final thing she knew was his emotionless expression as he ended her life. It is because of this I can't call him a hero. He saved the town, but what he did in order to achieve that was unforgivable.
her options were A: become a shiki and continue the cycle or B: die. only two maybe three shiki picked option B as far as we know. If he did't kill her she'd drink people or slowly starve to death.
+TheLucktown I'm planning to do a top list down the line and I don't wanna spoil it, so please be patient and you'll get what I hope is a satisfying answer.
The human side is still very humanized by the end too. The show reminded me a lot of real military conflict (war, and specially civil war). Both sides are cruel, and sometimes terrorist cells emerge to counteract what they consider oppression, etc. Shiki are portrayed since the very beginning as humans who were marginalized and ostracized for not really fitting into the societal structure of this traditional village, and their vampire act can be interpreted after all as an act of violent resistance (like organized crime, natioalistic terrorism, or outlaw criminals). So, regardless of hearing their perspective (again, as we sometimes can hear the rational of terrorists like ETA in Spain who argue they are defending their language, etc.) we are nevertheless rational spectators who most likely will side with the humans even if we at least slightly understand the humanity behind the reactionary side's criminal acts
+patanu I recently finished it and I get what you mean, I mean they could have taken turns on diffrent humans over a prolonged period, that way the humans dont die because they dont get their blood sucked constantly and have time to recover. Also I think its bad that they didnt cover what would happen if they killed the whole village and suddenly there are about 300 vampires, now what? more mouths to feed. Their whole social structure just seems flawed.
+sir shalo Yes, of course the plan was flawed. Portraying character flaws is a plus in storytelling. Also, the plan was made by an immature child so it makes sense that her perspective would be rather naive (sure, she lived as a vampire for several hundred years, but her perspective is still underdeveloped, as expected). If you paid attention to the discussions between Seishin and Sunako I don't think you would see that aspect as a problem.
+Yami Ai So no adults who were Shiki never thought it would've been a bad idea or at least saw flaws in her plan, also there is a difference between character flaw and dumb plans
+Yami Ai She's not a child though, she's in a child's body but mentally she is much older and more experienced than anyone else in the cast. Not to mention all the adults who for some reason didn't see the flaw in the plan.
Nice analysis of the op images. Though I was a bit bummed that nearly no attention was paid to the music. Imo the music chosen is an integral part of an opening. disregarding the music and its role and relationship with the images of the op gives the op anaysis an unfinished feeling/is a bit shortsighted
I love this show because of how it made me feel bad for the shiki because at the beginning I hated them and wanted the humans to win but as the show progressed and the shiki got more screen time I felt bad for them because they couldn’t fit in with humanity, but at the same time I could understand why the humans chose extreme violence at the end, because they had their family’s and loved ones taken away and left them grieving and in pain so of course they are going to be angry when they found out who took their family away.and at the end the end they made the humans look like the true monsters
Sunako and Muroi should have died. Also fuck Muroi. Megumi deserved to die but the way she died is a but painful to watch . I wish Megumi didn't kill anyone and she and Natsuno made it out alive. She didn't even get to know that Natsuno was alive before dying. I'm sad and depressed after this anime. So sad
This is possibly my favorite Anime. And I've seen all the mainstream shows and even some more obscure ones. But it's slow build and off atmosphere just does something for me over other shows.
I dropped the show after the episode that must've been right before the main teenage guy got turned. The part where he was walking I think stopped at a well or something and got ambushed by Megumi and his old friend. The episode ended on a cliffhanger but I couldn't really stomach it anymore so I dropped it.
I've seen a lot of anime and anime openings, and Shiki's first opening is definitely my favorite. The combination of the visuals with music perfectly captures the gothic horror aesthetic I love so much.
Lots of spoilers and lots of foreshadowing :D Great analysis though, I never paid attention to OP's before guess I'll start properly watching them. I never realized they stand for so many things, great observation skills!
I will always remembered this is the first freaking anime I watched, some day I just get interest in watching anime, and it just happened to be this anime. With one of the most crulest ending I ever known.
In my opinion this is one of the best horror animes to watch and there's not that much good horror anime to watch for Halloween because there's some but they're terrible the one thing I like about shiki it follows more of the horror aspects of the series because it does stay more focused on horror and leaves that action scenes in the end of the series and that's what a horror anime should be like and I always recommend people to go watch shiki for Halloween because it gets everything right in a horror anime like the soundtrack the story and the opening theme song and there's a lot of good horror mangas besides junji ito that I want to see become a anime in the near future
At the beginning of the series, there were a lot of wild dogs that had yellow eyes hiding in the forest. Looking at the disturbing imagery of the hospital residents, they seem to have the same animalistic quality, idk if that's related or anythin'
1:37 If you look closely at the way the silhouette of Sunako is walking, plus how the others are walking in lock step behind her like a marching army, it makes it clear who is really in charge of the Shiki (it's not the flamboyant guy in the cape). The lips are from Chizuru (timed to the word "Kuchizuke" or "kiss")
I know it didn't exist when you made this comment, but for anyone reading this, watch his Sword Art Online OP review. But I think the OPs he likes are kinda better to review, because it's usually OPs with lots of details in them, like the Jojo's OPs.
Wow what a coincidence I just finished watching this anime, really enjoyed it. really liked how the vampires are these monsters at the begining but at the end the roles are switched around.
Xavier Millar well the vampires were the hunter first but at the end it was the humans who became the hunter end they the prey. They seemed impossible to stop but then their flaws (I.E. not being able to keep awake during day) became really aparent.
This shows that Good and Evil may not mean benevolent and malevolent in many conflicts. Those who wish to do good go to far and become chaotic and malevolent to the other side which shows nothing but mercy when surrendered.
I was late getting on the Shiki train, but i have to say im so glad that i found other people in these comments that also didn't like the show. I've been reading comments on other Shiki related videos that placed this show on such a high pedestal, but i just couldn't see the appeal
I have to admit, I love this OP. I actually started watching this show specifically because of the OP. I don't actually like horror. I never finished it(again, I'm not a horror fan), but BUCK-TICK is now one of my favorite bands.
There's a possibility the skull in front of the mansion could foreshadow Natsuno's death at the end. Maybe even hint upon the cycle beginning again after his demise.
Hey love how. You analysis the openings. Do not know what your next one you are going to is, but here is an idea. Since next month is Thanksgiving all about food. How about compare the two openings of Shokugeki no Soma. Personally I like the second on better and think it is better. Love the worl and hope you will continue on.
You can take any stance what you like, but why hate the humans. The show heavily tries to make you like or forgive the Shiki towards the end. At the same would you really as a human be so forgiving to beings that want to kill every single human in your hometown and at this point your mom & dad + your sibling has already been eaten by them and maybe your brother/sister comes from the darkness to haunt and scare you more then try to feed on you...in the end my thinking was Shiki weren't in a sense evil, but at the same time the humans in the village had the right to defend themselves how brutal that conflict turned out to be.
@@alicianelson1252 It's just a really sad story, in a sense I never felt that much horror from it, but just really heavy melancholy and sadness for all the dead and even the risen towards the end. Just one big tragedy.
I think the most brutal scene is the examination. It is the most intimate scene, where the death is dragged out over several hours. Also the fact it is shown to the viewer by a recording amplifies the fact that you are the one who is watching this, as if you are also a character in the show. Some god watching silently on the sides, purely for entertainment, not intervening. Also the fact even the most brutal villagers never watch the video, shows how twisted the viewer must be. I also think the episode when sunako explains how she became a shiki is something related to sexual violence and is quite chilling.
Love this series and, if I may, I have some suggestions: Great Teacher Onizuka Hunter x Hunter 2011 (take your pick) Hajime no Ippo (again take your pick, but I think op 1 or 4 would be best) Code Geass (op 1) Death Note (op 1) Keep up the excellent work!
The Shiki anime is based on novels with the same name. There is a manga version of Shiki which gives more details and more closer look on the characters and what they think and feel.
Though I feel the story kind of failed at portraying the human side of the Shikis, I think it did a great job showing the "monster" side of the humans. It had the potential to be much better, but I still think it's a good thriller to watch.
My friend came up with a theory that the kirishiki mansion was built by the same guy who built the spencer manscion in RE1 and it was interesting but it couldn't be possible because Mr. Trevor was an American architect and stuff but non the less. Something to think about in the shower
I was watching a video of Lil peep, and he said one of his favourite anime was Shiki. Now I claim to know a lot about anime but I’ve never heard of this until now. I just had to search it up and here I am now.
-Spoilers- I know this video is old and long over due for relevant commenting but I am pretty sure that the skull at the end is either in reference to Seishins book about the brother wandering the wasteland. Or foreshadowing the entire villages destruction by fire.
Hello there childhood friend do you want to help me murder my wife? No? Okay go die in the vampire house then I'm off to go not help my LAST LIVING FRIEND AND POTENTIALLY SAVE HER LIFE FROM THE FREAKING UNDEAD
CrukarnGaming to be fair he wasnt really thinking of her as his wife anymore but a monster basically wearing his wife's face, but yeah you'd think he'd be more hesitant to kill something that even looked like his wife he was pretty far gone at that point.
I'm half way through the show and can't get a grasp on how to feel. Theres good ideas, well shot psychological horror scenes, and things i like, but i find it hard feeling anything for these characters
+atakandatennisluva I felt like there wasn't enough content in it to fit into a full episode, and the first OP alone was already coming close to 8 minutes.
+Mother's Basement ahh ok fair enough then. I really like your content dude. its different from what you usually see from the anime community on youtube which is generally just funny vines and reviews. ive already shared this to all my mates who are into anime cause you definately deserve the views. Look forward to watching more stuff.
So what do you think the imagery in the second OP means? Theit souls floating out of their bodies seems meaningful, but I cant really figure out anything concrete.
SO I want to watch this. . .two questions: 1: What level of gore is this? Baccano! or Hellsing Ultimate? 2: Any nude or sex scenes I should be wary of? (Parents and small children tend to walk past me while I watch anime so I have to be careful).
i agree with most of this... except i can't really get scared by this. i mean, the premise is scary as hell, and the series is well made. the only issue i have with it is the character design. i find it surprisingly difficult to be scared when i'm laughing at the silly haircolors and hairdos. and i'm sad that it was done so... weirdly. i dont see how it serves a narrative purpose either. i mean, appearances do a lot to inform the viewer of any character's personality in how they chose to dress and style themselves... but here that's all lost for me, due to the level of ... ridiculous that these hairstyles reach.
This is one of my all-time favorite OPs from a criminally underrated show, I'm so happy to see all the incredible symbolism broken down and explained here.
Hououin Kyouma it’s incredible
@Hououin Kyouma Watch Higurashi
Isk on first episode and it's too notch
overall, the anime is great. But the ending got rushed and some characters didnt got really explained.
The 2nd ending is great too
The shot of the hospital staff at 5:35 ish i would have said was meant to draw a similarity between the staff and a pack of wolves, hunting their prey, given that wolves hunt in packs and the composition of the scene ( Gold wolven eyes amongst a forest, staring at the audience with malice ) and Werewolves ( A combination of man and wolf ) are typically juxtaposed alongside vampires ( Shiki in this case ) as monsters in human skin.

+harhargorilla WHAT DID I JUST SAY
+The4thLaw I watched it and haven't seen the anime. Nothing has changed.
The4thLaw I didn't give who, what, where, when for the scene so its ok if I say it.
I own it on DVD
It’s actually genius how much the OP tells new viewers what happens in the show without actually spoiling anything
the music box notes at the end of the song scared the shit out of me when I first watched Shiki

Shiki is hands down my favorite anime and this analysis just make me what to watch the series over again
I love that last shot with the skull. I could watch it forever. It's so good.
Same, it creeped a lot of people out but it actually fascinated me (and still does)
Isn't the guy kissing Sunako Seishin? It makes a lot more sense.
Yeah.
Draculian vampirism (like the kind we see in Shiki) is also transferred by kissing someone who's either on the brink of death or already undead but even taking that into account it still works either way.
Mr. Muroi
(Might have speller that wrong)
>Skeleton appears
>spooped
I'll always love Shiki and the themes shown in the series!! Still one of my favorite animes. Definitely criminally underrated
I love Shiki! It's the anime version of Salem's Lot. The DVD sits comfortably on my shelf.
At 3:44 I believe that's Nao, not Sunako.
murdercute88 yea I noticed that too
She's way too old to be Sunako.
I see that, her height. But her hair.. it’s sunako’s.

Read the manga and its ment to be vague in character and big in plot. You will have to re read and re watch it to understand.

I'd like to see you do one on the Higurashi openings. An idea for next October I guess?
Still everyone knows that Natsuno, Ozaki and Ritsuko are the real MVP's.

I have to admit, I love this OP. I actually started watching this show specifically because of the OP. I don't actually like horror. I never finished it(again, I'm not a horror fan), but BUCK-TICK is now one of my favorite bands.
I don't know I always saw the doctor guy as the main character
There's a possibility the skull in front of the mansion could foreshadow Natsuno's death at the end. Maybe even hint upon the cycle beginning again after his demise.
I was just thinking "I wonder if mothers basement would do a what's in a OP for school live" and it came up. You can read my mind!!!!
I forgot how good this opening is!
It's it wrong that I kind of wish the shiki succeeded in taking over the village the humans were so much worse
@@thamor4746 I know I just understand why the vampires did what they did though I didn't think that until the end of the series
@@alicianelson1252 It's just a really sad story, in a sense I never felt that much horror from it, but just really heavy melancholy and sadness for all the dead and even the risen towards the end. Just one big tragedy.
the last 4 episodes was brutal
I think the most brutal scene is the examination. It is the most intimate scene, where the death is dragged out over several hours. Also the fact it is shown to the viewer by a recording amplifies the fact that you are the one who is watching this, as if you are also a character in the show. Some god watching silently on the sides, purely for entertainment, not intervening. Also the fact even the most brutal villagers never watch the video, shows how twisted the viewer must be. I also think the episode when sunako explains how she became a shiki is something related to sexual violence and is quite chilling.
Love this series and, if I may, I have some suggestions:
Great Teacher Onizuka
Hunter x Hunter 2011 (take your pick)
Hajime no Ippo (again take your pick, but I think op 1 or 4 would be best)
Code Geass (op 1)
Death Note (op 1)
Keep up the excellent work!
makes me wanna rewatch shiki but i get so damn paranoid after watching it
The Shiki anime is based on novels with the same name. There is a manga version of Shiki which gives more details and more closer look on the characters and what they think and feel.
This opening... I EAT SHIIIIT!
I thought I was the only 1 who heard that 🤣
Woo Canadians
red moon, its blood moon! anyone else love the new blood on incantation? magic the gathering for the win.
Though I feel the story kind of failed at portraying the human side of the Shikis, I think it did a great job showing the "monster" side of the humans.
It had the potential to be much better, but I still think it's a good thriller to watch.
I do not possess enough empathy for this to scare me... man back to the therapist I go
My friend came up with a theory that the kirishiki mansion was built by the same guy who built the spencer manscion in RE1 and it was interesting but it couldn't be possible because Mr. Trevor was an American architect and stuff but non the less. Something to think about in the shower
Amazing analysis. What about a serial experiments lain OP analysis? It's got really interesting visuals
Or foreshadowing the entire villages destruction by fire.
could you analyse the zankyou no terror opening pls?
:D
lol I'm always in a cold sweat.
Please do the opening to Ergo Proxy, that is choc full of meaning :)
Doctor did nothing wrong
Ozaki did everything wrong.
@@NEETKitten what he did too his wife she never hurt anyone and as you could tell how horrified she was yeah he was absolutely messed up in the head.
Hello there childhood friend do you want to help me murder my wife? No? Okay go die in the vampire house then I'm off to go not help my LAST LIVING FRIEND AND POTENTIALLY SAVE HER LIFE FROM THE FREAKING UNDEAD
bold and also true
CrukarnGaming to be fair he wasnt really thinking of her as his wife anymore but a monster basically wearing his wife's face, but yeah you'd think he'd be more hesitant to kill something that even looked like his wife he was pretty far gone at that point.
With the notes at the end, the song cuts off suddenly. It follows the main melody of the OP but ends a few notes before the chorus would.
Shiki is my favorite anime at the moment, that or Toradora
Shiki best anime
I'm going to assume your Canadian? You mentioned us being 'American'
Anyways, amazing analysis, and I agree. I loved Shiki too!
look at the previous video dud
yeah, I'm a canuck born and bred.
It would be beautiful if you analized the second Shiki op too
YES!!!! SEASON 4 OF JOJO
I guess Shiki really doesn't like Brain Death
i really liked this anime but i can never watch it again
I'm half way through the show and can't get a grasp on how to feel. Theres good ideas, well shot psychological horror scenes, and things i like, but i find it hard feeling anything for these characters
if you mom had a dungeon it would be more creepy than spooky. Germans and their dungeons....
great vid. was just wondering why you didnt cover the second opening for shiki aswell?
+atakandatennisluva I felt like there wasn't enough content in it to fit into a full episode, and the first OP alone was already coming close to 8 minutes.
+Mother's Basement ahh ok fair enough then. I really like your content dude. its different from what you usually see from the anime community on youtube which is generally just funny vines and reviews. ive already shared this to all my mates who are into anime cause you definately deserve the views. Look forward to watching more stuff.
2:32-2:53 So would you call that a clever and original use of generic white birds?
Thanks for the complete lack of a spoiler warning
Aw yea, spook time.
So what do you think the imagery in the second OP means? Theit souls floating out of their bodies seems meaningful, but I cant really figure out anything concrete.
of all the characters i felt sorry ffor the most, it was probably megumi
lol, she was the one I hated the most. "I have eaten so much blood today, I might get fat" well, fuck you in the eye, Megumi.
the whole village made fun of her though, not that it made her killings right, it at least made them understandable
In the end, when she was dying, I really felt bad for her. In the end, she just wanted to escape and go to the city.
What's your top 3 horror anime (since I heard you mentioned it at the beginning)? =)
I don't know about you guys, but this show is pretty "shiki" 🙂🙂🙂
SO I want to watch this. . .two questions: 1: What level of gore is this? Baccano! or Hellsing Ultimate? 2: Any nude or sex scenes I should be wary of? (Parents and small children tend to walk past me while I watch anime so I have to be careful).
Six years later but
1: depends on the episode on some it is a crap ton
2. No
i agree with most of this...
except i can't really get scared by this. i mean, the premise is scary as hell, and the series is well made.
the only issue i have with it is the character design.
i find it surprisingly difficult to be scared when i'm laughing at the silly haircolors and hairdos.
and i'm sad that it was done so... weirdly. i dont see how it serves a narrative purpose either. i mean, appearances do a lot to inform the viewer of any character's personality in how they chose to dress and style themselves...
but here that's all lost for me, due to the level of ... ridiculous that these hairstyles reach.
Could we get an one of these for the 2nd op 0w0
i never though to like shiki because its so slow pace tho after episode 4 its fcking awesssssssssssssssssssssssome
This still has nothing compared to OG higurashi
