Sailor Profit Fude Nib Fountain Pen Unboxing and Review

  • What is a "FUDE" nib? pronounced (foo day) and it is typically used by those who write hànzì
characters (Mandarin) or Kanji characters (Japanese) and many other eastern pictogram types of
writing. The nib looks like it has been dropped on the floor because it is bent back at the tip. It allows for some brush-like writing and you can get some crazy line variation out of them. This is my first Sailor pen and my first full Fude nib.
I unbox it, talk about the parts and features of the pen, provide some size comparisons and
measurements, and then do a writing sample. After the writing sample, I talk about what I like and what I don't like about the pen. Please feel free to use the chapters provided below to skip to various parts of the review.

I have this same pen. Definitely blue. Got it for sketching, not writing, and mine reverse writes (or draws) pretty well. I never even thought to try that until recently. My only dissatisfaction would be that fude nibs ought to be paired with pens that hold a lot of ink, piston fillers or Japanese eyedroppers like Opus 88s. Right now I have a converter with Platinum Pigmented Sepia, and I should probably refill a cartridge to get some more capacity.

Great video as ever, Douglas. I have this pen, which I think is/was much cheaper in the UK (unusually!) and it was tremendous fun, I completely agree. The plasticky feel seemed appropriate for how little it cost. The higher priced Sailor pens have some amazing nibs, but let’s not go down that road!

    1. Fude nibs are great for expressive drawing. I'm interested by your enthusiasm for using one for writing.
    2. As far as I can tell, fude nibs are exclusively a low-end product. Maybe this means they are mainly a curiousity for most of the market (writers).
    3. I have a handful of fudes and they all work fine for reverse writing, broadening their range even further.

Hi, Doug. The writing on the packaging is in Japanese with its mixed system of kanji and kana (two phonetic alphabets). I have a Platinum fude de mannen that's not currently inked and which takes international cartridges instead of their proprietary ones in other c/c pens. It's one of those slim pens for small hands. In my corner of the world a fude de mannen pen can be found at your regular stationery store in the calligraphy section with brushes, brushes pens and calligraphy paper that doesn't fall apart when you put a wet brush to it. Since it's part of the regional cultural tradition everything can be bought cheaply, e.g. Platinum fude de mannen under 10 dollars, Sailor around 10 dollars US. I haven't looked for Pilot since my Chinese calligraphy is nothing to write home about.
I did get some decent reverse writing out of the Chinese pens (PenBBS, Jinhao 992). If only Long made EF mini fude nibs I'd be thrilled. I'm looking forward to an update on your fude adventures.
(Btw, my Moonman M100 with a Schmidt nib was drier than the Sahara on a July noon out of the box until a friend adjusted the ink flow. Now I actually like it.)

Thanks, Doug! Fountain pens offer so many ways to enjoy writing, sketching, doodling, etc. I've seen some vids in which fude nibs work well in reverse, so I think that's a reasonable expectation. Sailor sells one advertised as "Fude Mannen," that may be cheaper than the one you picked up.

Amazon has a five pack of Jinhao fude nibs that I found when I bought my five pack of Jinhao x750s to futz with after the Zebra G video. In total, the ten pack of Zebras, five pack of Jinhaos, and five pack of fudes came out to 40 bucks USD. I'm really impressed with the quality of the Jinhao fude nibs and they're specifically built for those x750/450 etc style pens! No muss, no fuss, seven bucks total for a nice, decently wet pen! If you're interested in playing around with fude nibs, try those!

I've enjoyed fude nibs of many sizes. I have a Profit fude, $20 USD from Amazon many years ago. The size is very close to a 1911 standard or a Jinhao 992, which has the same butt plug. Medium is based on the angle of bend. I'm not aware of what angle is medium. Fudes are 40 or 55 degrees can be more or less. More bend wider line. I prefer a stub for easy line variation. Add an angle, cursive and/or italic & lines have more character.

Another wonderful video, full of all sorts of fun as well as sound testing. I'm guessing that your pen has the 40 degree nib, rather than the 55 degree version. I've also learned a thing or two about Sailor naming conventions from this video, as it appears that "Profit" (or 1911 in certain other markets) does not indicate any level of quality, but simply shape. What sort of machinery are you going to use in grinding? Just curious because I gave my bench grinder to my neighbor three years ago - maybe that was a mistake.

    • @InkquiringMinds

Thank you, Joel! And thanks for that information. I assumed it didn't mean "profit" LOL. I'm replacing my dead Dremel. I killed mine grinding some cow bone saddles for acoustic guitars. The fine powder got into the motor and it stopped. I have a bench clamp specifically for the Dremel tool so it will be an easy setup.

I'm loving my Jinhao and Picasso fude pens. I can get crazy expressive lines when drawing without even trying, sort of a woodcut look. It's like having different sizes of technical pens in one pen. And my print writing looks nice as well, like I'm writing with a brush pen.
The long Sailor fude de mannen pens were the hipster choice for a while, but the Chinese pens seem just as good if not a bit better for cheap. More body styles and weights, and the smoother bend means the feed won't hit the paper at low angles, so no ghost lines when you don't want them.
I found out about them through Teoh Yi Chie's youtube channel. He has a lot of fountain pen and ink videos from an artist perspective. He has some videos on the huge 3-tined Duke Confucius fude pen with the overfeed. The tip on that one is really long, like writing with a palette knife 😁

I was looking at these lower priced Sailor pens - they're sweet (felt a bit cheap in my hand), but just too small.too thin and too short for adult hands. While they can get away with the fact these pens are rather deeply posted (why don't all manufacturers do that?), there is no way getting around the lack of girth. Too bad, 'cause they're sweet.

Goodness, you're in public without a mask, that's a little risky wouldn't you agree. As for fude nibs I don't know if they're for me since I prefer a stiff nib and one that gives no line variation, but I think I may give one a try.
Something you brought up were pen companies manufacturing cheap converters and selling them while at the same time inflating the price for no reason and praise companies that use standard international. Personally I don't mind proprietary converters because some companies may add an extra feature that "could" be beneficial kinda like monteverde with the screw on thread that I'm guessing to create a better seal and stop the converter from rattling, and Lamy with those small dots that keep the converter in place. However I think the biggest problem is pen companies not providing a free converter to begin with because what's the point of using standard international if you're still gonna have to pay for the high price tag.
Edit: I know I rambled for a bit but I forgot to mention great video as always and I'm still intrigued on what you have to say about the pilot falcon.

Inside a public space, it is mandated that everyone must wear a mask and say at least six feet away which I and my family have done religiously since the beginning of March.
