Enjoyed the video. I am an old artist new to using fountain pens , too. I'm going to be getting the Platinum Carbon ink & Sailor Fude pen. After seeing your video, I am also going to be getting the syringes to avoid the mess & waste. I totally agree that filling the converters via dunking the nib into the bottle is not the most efficient method.
Thanks for sharing your experience & excitement 😊

Platinum Carbon Black is fabulous. I have it in my Lamy Al-Star (F nib), TWISBI Eco (M nib) and in two different dude pens (Including a Sailor). You may find it easier to draw with your dude pen if you hold it at more on a 45 degree angle.

3:18 ...Char...you are quite normal ...Alot of Fountain Penners, love the process of cleaning out their pens, convertors and even their cartridges with a syringe and water...
For myself, This is all part of the art.....A cleaning of pen, indicates "out with the old" and In, with the new"
There is a sense of accomplishment and renewal when a pen is cleaned and refilled with a brand new ink , color , brand etc.
I got the Hongdian M2 Black Forest Mini Fountain Pen, Extra Fine Soft Nib & Sleek Shape Aluminium Short Pocket Travel Pen ....unfortunately I can't use it for long sketch / doodle / or writing sessions, due to the cramps I get from the metal body and weight....I always return back to my Pilot Kakuno collection of Fine & medium nibbed~ inked up fountain pens.
11:36...I love my ⚫Platinum Black Carbon ink....for all my sketches...it is a large bottle 60ml , waterproof, very affordable $22 canada amazon and easy to transfer to a secure 5ml sample bottle , for outdoor sketching and coffee shop scribing session.
12:42...I think that is called a FUDE NIB ?
13:07...You can empty those cartridges, clean them and then, use a syringe, and refill them with your new Platinum ink and voila, your set for many months, till the cartridge insert wears out.
I find that the ⚫De Atramentis Archive Ink is on the pricey side, $65 cad amazon. and you get less 45ml than the Platinum Black Carbon Ink 60ml
I suggest you look at the 3oz / 90 ml Noodlers black ink $20 cad each .... next...
Which one is the best for waterproof / artwork , I've still got to figure out myself
⚫Waterproof / Black archival inks from Noodler are :
    ⚫Noodler's Bernanke Black
    ⚫Noodler's Polar Bulletproof, Eel
⚫Noodler's Black Waterproof /archival "with the catfish label "
I wish they made this Sailor Fude nib Pens , in Demonstrator / Clear body...I'd buy them up. lol
    I am looking around...
perhaps the *Majohn C1 Fountain Pen, Bent fine to broad Nib* Eyedropper and Converter Filling, Transparent Acrylic Mini Pocket Fude Pen ($40 cad) ...will do the trick.

Welcome to the rabbit hole that is fountain pens🙂. I'm a big fan of Noodler's inks, a lot of artists like to use Noodler's Lexington Gray for sketching. A flex nib is also a good nib to sketch with, a little pressure changes the line variation. Good luck on this new journey of fountain pens hopefully the bug doesn't hit you too hard because if it does your wallet will never be the same 😂😂😂. Oh ya, you might want to look into getting a " bulb syringe". It will help you when you clean out your fountain pen. Makes the whole process of flushing out your pen a lot more efficient especially if it's clogged. (That can happen with any ink that uses pigment which I think carbon black does and I do believe a lot of waterproof inks fall into that category of pigment inks, but don't quote me on that)

Thank you! I've heard great things about Noodler's Ink especially when I first started urbansketching. I'm tempted to purchase that one, too. 😂 I've been enjoying the fude nib, so I don't think I'll be going crazy with buying new fountain pens anytime soon, lol. Oh! I do have a bulb syringe, I actually used it in my last video before I learned how to properly fill the ink converter. Thanks for the tip!

@CharVillena just a heads up in the last video I could be wrong but I think what you used was a blunted syringe, a bulb syringe is a little different. They tend to be blue and you see them in ear wax removal kits. They sell them separately few dollars on Amazon and some online pen shops have them too. And if you do get one sometimes but not often you have to shave the tip so it fits the pen. You'll fill it up with water and will want to get a good seal to the opening of the back of the pen where the converter or the ink cartridge would get inserted. This way you can really push that water through the feed and nib. Sorry if you do have one and I just wasted your time.🙂 It's just one of those hacks that a lot of fountain pen people learn that they wish they learned a lot sooner. And nice watercolor too, I will be checking out some of your other videos to see what other awesome watercolor/art you make.

@@alans192 Ohh yes, I’ve seen the bulb syringe used as a nasal aspirator. I’ll have to buy one. Thanks for clarifying!

paper towels are a must when you’re filling your pens. they help clean up any ink that may get on your pen above the nib so it doesn’t get on your fingers. also, an ink filling syringe will eliminate the previous issue all together. simply fill the syringe and then transfer the ink to the converter. insert the converter and wait a few minutes for the ink to flow into your feed and you’re good to go. hope that helps! enjoy your new urban sketching kit and outings. 😊

@@tilliet00 I actually used a syringe when I first filled up my fountain pen before I knew how to use the converter, haha. I’m gonna continue using the syringe so I don’t waste ink. I can’t wait to share my cafe sketch with you all! I had a lot of fun drawing with the fude nib 😊

Hi there, just wondering if this ink you bought is waterproof and also whether you have found your fude clogs at all over time?

  • @Callyth
    @Callyth 4 месяца назад

Ah yes, another one joins us in the fountain pen hole :) While I do agree that some 'fountain pen drawing' inks can be risky for pens, I do still think it's worth it to break the rules a little if it gets you to enjoy your things more! Having designated I'm-okay-with-ruining-it pens helps a tonne - the super cheap Platinum Preppy is perfect for this, but uhhhh I also have a nicer TWSBI eco pen that I use with a R&K inks simply because I enjoy drawing with that pen a lot. I think as long as the cap is airtight, and you use the pen a lot or rinse it out every couple of months, it should be fine!
All this to say I love sketching with the Rohrer & Klinger inks, especially in pink, and to me they're perfect for painting over in my sketchbook and journal (also a hobonichi!). Because Jackson's carries them, they're also more accessible to me than some other waterproof brands lol

I’m happy to be apart of the community! 😊 I agree with you on that one. The fountain pens I have are inexpensive so I don’t mind being a rule breaker, lol. I think if the fountain pen was over $50, I’d be more cautious. Also, like I mentioned in the video, I actually enjoy cleaning out the fountain pens, so I don’t think I’ll have a problem with clogging. I actually ended up using my R&K Sketch Ink as an ink wash in my waterbrush. I love it!

Hi Char, for some reason you are not coming up on instagram do you still use it? I wanted to ask if you have had any problems with your sailor fude in terms of it clogging up?

Hi! No, I'm no longer on IG. But to answer your question, yes it did get clogged. I cleaned the ink converter recently so it's working fine now. Regardless, I love sketching with it :)
