    There is a 3rd Sailor Fude pen that is also Blue, ( with a pocket clip on the cap) it is called the Profit and it is the same nib as the green one, but somehow there is better ink flow. Ever since I got it, the green one sits in it's box.

    • @pbasswil
      @pbasswil Год назад +3

      I've never had the green one, I chose the blue one because although I want the _option_ to get some thicker lines, I mostly like to draw thin lines. The blue's nib is bent at a different angle than the green's, such that you have to draw with a slightly more exaggerated, uh, _flatness_ to the page, to get your fat lines. That works for me - I don't have to hold the pen so vertical to get my usual thin lines.

    You can try this to improve your pen ink flow. Put some water in a cup a, put it in the microwave oven, until it get warm (not boiling) then dip your hero fountain pen nib in the hot water, to warm up the feed, then firmly press the nib against the feed with your fingers. It usually helps the nib conform better to the feed shape.

    I re-watched this video for inspiration! I recently bought a Duke 209 and put De Atrementis Document Black ink in it...but the sailor de mannen blows it out of the water. The Duke has a finer sweet spot for perfect ink flow. Plus with the Duke you cannot reverse the nib to draw thin lines like you can the Sailor. And the Duke tends to skip alot, especially when you draw a bit faster. The sailor's ink flow keeps up but the Duke does not. I might try putting Platinum Carbon ink in it to see if that makes a difference. And I have tried different papers from smooth to a slight tooth and it does not make a difference. But I got to say I am not impressed with the 209. Plus, since the Duke is so slippery it is hard to control the pen while drawing. I like the Sailor but sometimes I feel I am drawing with a razor blade. I wish it was a little less harsh on the paper with a thicker nib tip. I would like to try a Hero fude pen but you have a 50/50 chance of it working:( Oh well. Thanks again for this video.

    Great description of fude pens and their alternatives. I'm surprised you had a problem with your Duke 209. I have three of them and love them. BTW, the difference between the 40 and 55 degree Sailor pens is simply that you don't have to lay the 40 degree pen as flat to get the widest line. Do you know that you can buy the Mannen nib in a more conventional pen? It's called the Sailor Profit and looks like a standard black pen.

    • @FollowingtheWhiteRabbit
      @FollowingtheWhiteRabbit  6 лет назад

      Thanks Larry! Glad the Duke work well for you. 😊 I will have to try the blue Sailor to really feel the difference. 😉 See you!!

    • @hovawart16
      @hovawart16 3 года назад +1

      Did you mean to say the other way around? I am trying to decide between the two and I thought the 40 degree Sailor pen would require laying the 40 degree down flatter (more horizontal). If you see this, I'd love an explanation.

    I have a rotring artpen and am not finding it to be very interesting or always reliable, despite only filling it with washable ink. After this video I ordered a Sailor fude ink pen and love it!! I'm drawing with it, sketching, doodling and even just writing. the ink flows so nicely and it hasn't faltered yet, even whilst writing with the nib flipped over. I may get my self a second one so I can have washable ink in one and permanent in the second. Thanks for the review it really inspired me!

    I've been using this pen for a good while too. I have two - one usually filled with De Artemis Brown Document Ink and the other with the grey version of the same brand. I find them excellent for life drawing. I go straight in with pen without any underdrawing. The sketchiness of line means mistakes are easy to 'remodel'. My much posher TWSBI Eco gets nowhere near as much use!

    I have not tried the De Mannen, or any Sailor fountain pen yet. I only have one Fude nib pen, and that is a Duke 551 Confucius that I adore. My only two complaints are that I wish it could hold more ink and that it isn't as easy to clean (even fountain pen ink can dry up in the nib), as my Pilot and Noodlers pens. As much as I love the Fude nib, I have found I can sketch faster with line variation using a flexible fountain pen nib. My current favourite is the Ahab from Noodlers. It can be used with a cartridge, a converter, and as an eyedropper pen. It is the smoothest sketching pen I have used to date.

      It seems a great plan, Stacey! 👍 With watersoluble ink, in my opinion and experience, it's usually better to use only water rather than watercolors than can get muddy. I love the two Sailor fude pens but like the ink cartridges less, so have to get the converters and probably a more waterproof ink such as the one Teoh uses, I forget what it is called, though he says that too is not necessarily fully waterproof just better. I have had great results with both these pens, glad to know other artists love them too, just wish I had heard of them years ago. They have an advantage over technical pens in that they are so much faster to use because you aren't constantly looking for the bigger or smaller point you want, and not having to compensate for the difference in ink flow/size. They become intuitive to use very wuickly.

    • @FollowingtheWhiteRabbit
      @FollowingtheWhiteRabbit  6 лет назад +2

      Hi Lindy! Thanks for your comment ! I also think this pens are really intuitive to use. Sometimes, you get a thin or a broad line on purpose but, most of the time, that's more about enjoying the dynamism of the line a more genuine organic way. 😃 Yeah, you will probably be happier with converters and an ink of your choice. I will talk about all of this in the next video. 😊

    • @larrymarshall9454
      @larrymarshall9454 6 лет назад +2

      Teoh uses Noodler's Black which works well as long as there isn't much sizing in the paper. With good watercolor paper, however, it isn't waterproof. Platinum Carbon Black, DeAtramentis Document inks (several colors), and Rohrer & Klingnon Sketch Inks (several colors) all work well if you want a waterproof ink.

    Bonjour, I bought a Duke 55 fountain pen, but since the beginning it has not had good flow. I prefer my Lamy pen instead . I have one with a medium nib and another with the 1.9 nib. The latter works like your Sailor pen, in that the nib size varies. It does make sketching more fun. I looked into buying. sailor one and may do that in the future but for now the Lamys work well. It think it works more like the parallel pen than like a fude nib though so it will be different if you buy a Sailor. 😉 Different kind of fun!! 😛 😁
      See you!! 😘

      Following the White Rabbit , yes I think you are right about the Lamy. Have just ordered the Sailor pen. Not expensive. I am just trying not to buy so many art supplies, but some are worth getting. 👍🌻

    hi, I bought a fude nib pen after seeing you use one previously. Also looked at some reviews by
    Teoh Yi Chie on RUclips and decided to try the Duke 209. So far it's good but will also buy a Sailor green one to compare. Thanks for your review 😀 🎨

      Nice Michelle! I am glad you are happy with the Duke. Teoh reviews are always really useful. 😊 Please tell me what you think when you will get the Sailor too! 😃 😁 😉

    I like my Duke 551 a lot. I do have to prime it sometimes but it is very fun to draw with. I’ll try the Sailors.

    Double thumbs up from Eileen's wife. I love my Fude pen but love the parallel pen for more abstract, jagged lines when I am focusing on abstract drawings. The program changed FUDE to dude pen...hahaha!

      Hi Judith, nice to meet you!! 😃 🤗 Haha so funny indeed, this autocorrects are sometimes so fun! 😂 You're right, the parallel pen can be nice to give a more abstract feeling or even bolder look. 😊 See you!!

      Hi! Thanks for the recommendation! 😌 I didn’t try it yet but I know a lot of people really like it. Marc Taro Holmes uses it. 😊 How would you say it’s different from a fineliner? ☺️

    • @nirabenhamou6829
      @nirabenhamou6829 6 лет назад

      Following the White Rabbit totally different than a fineliner. It glides when you write. I guess you have to try it to know what I mean. Hard to explain something you feel lol.
      And thanks for the quick reply. You are such an inspiring person. So happy and lively!! 😍

    Great and informative video. I have been interested in the fude nib pens for a while and may buy one soon after seeing your video. I have a Lamy which I really enjoy for drawing.

      Thank you Gayle! 😊 ❤️ You could even use the Fude along with the Lamy to vary the quality of your lines in your sketches. 😌 😃 😉 Please tell me if you buy one, how you like it!! 😝

    I'm not very familiar with fountain pens, but I bought the green sailor fude a few months ago given all of the wonderful reviews. My problem is that I can't get a variation in thickness because the pen seems to skip. Sometimes I have to go to a scrap peice of paper and make a bunch of lines to get the ink flowing again. Any tips?

    • @FollowingtheWhiteRabbit
      @FollowingtheWhiteRabbit  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Annevai, so, do you mean that the ink doesn't always flow really well in your fountain pen? Did you did to push a bit the ink in the pen with the converter? I do that sometimes (just be careful in the case a drop would feel from the pen!). It could be also a problem with the ink, if it sat a bit too long with your pen. Maybe, try to wash your pen, make it set in soapy water for a while, change the water... After it dries, put ink in it again and try to see if it's better? Hope that helps, see you! 😊 Are you sketching on smooth paper? The pen would skip more on watercolor paper...

    Great video. I have a Hero with a dude nib. I like it but I don’t think the angle is as great as the Sailor green. Might have to get that one too.

    Thanks for the great video as always! Have you had much experience with flex nib fountain pens? I'm debating whether or not I should get a flex or the sailor fude!

    • @FollowingtheWhiteRabbit
      @FollowingtheWhiteRabbit  6 лет назад +1

      Taco, Thank you for the compliments! 😃 In my experience, flex nib fountain pen (are you thinking about the Noodlers one?! 😬) are such a struggle. I mean, I think vintage expensive old ones can be nice but if you buy a Noodlers, for examples... hummm well, I wouldn't recommend it but, once again, that's just my opinion. 😅 Is it for drawing only or also for calligraphy?! I discovered recently an amazing kind of marker than works a bit like a flex nib (the tip bend) : the Pentel Touch Pen (It's also in my kit : kit.com/FollowingWhiteRabbit/my-favorite-sketching-drawing-calligraphy-tools). It's not extremely juicy so maybe better for rather slow calligraphy than fast sketching (plus the ink is not waterproof) but it's great. So, you got it, for sketching, I would definitely recommend a Sailor Fude rather than a flex : you will have less trouble and it even may be better for your sketching practice because you don't have to press the nib on the paper to get thicker lines and you can use the pen are more free angles. 😃 😉

      Following the White Rabbit wow! You've read my mind! I was thinking of trying the noodler's flex nib for sketching. But from some videos I've seen, the ink flow doesn't seem to be as juicy as a fude nib? What made me wary of a fude nib is just knowing when to draw at the right angle! I guess it's all about practice and muscle memory. Thanks for your reply 😄😄

    Thank you for this... I got a sailor fude (green one) and I am now in Europe and wondering where I can get refills for these? Can you give a source for this? Shipping is too expensive from amazon US...

      You can buy a converter for the Sailor Fude which enables you to use water resistant inks of your choice. I bought two of these when purchasing my pen from Amazon. Living in Australia, I know your pain with shipping costs.

      Hi! All my ink recommendations are in the kit and you will get more detail with my next video. kit.com/FollowingWhiteRabbit/my-favorite-sketching-drawing-calligraphy-tools
      Yes, I think all Noodlers inks are suitable for fountain pens?! Mine were supposed to be "bulletproof" and are not even waterproof but they are OK for fountain pen. I don't think you need a particular ink for these pens. 😊

    Ann-Laure anyway you can change the captioning from Dutch to English?

    • @FollowingtheWhiteRabbit
      @FollowingtheWhiteRabbit  6 лет назад

      Nancy, I wrote to RUclips to talk to them about this nonsense about the captioning... 😟 The video is set in English so RUclips should provide ENGLISH captions. I can't do anything about it unfortunately. What RUclips provides by now it not even real Dutch that could be understand by German people but an absurd attempt at transcribing what I am pronouncing in English with German words!!!!!! 😯😵😭 Absolutely absurd. Thanks for your link you sent me the other day but it didn't help... 😟 I am insisting and will keep insisting to RUclips so that they fix this absurd really bothering issue. Thanks for your patience Nancy! 😘
