Armour is like onions. They both have layers
Lol
you know what else has layers ?
inseto bob Ogres?
+Super Ultra Mega Nerd
CAKES HAVE LAYERS
Shreks havs layeerz
6:50 of course it makes sense, you don’t want to be an adventurer one second, then take an arrow to the knee making you become a simple guard in a quiet town
Skyrim reference lol
I mostly speak in generalities. There are always exceptions to the rule. :)
Only 24 like (25 mine) hmmmm
3rd
instablaster.
I think that some people would enjoy it if you did a tutorial on how to draw futuristic armor. Y'know, like, iron man.
Yeah!
YAH LIKE A APPLE ARMORE
Yes, like my armor
How?
Penisu o
I like helmets as long as the helmet reflects the character well. Put an evil helmet on an evil character, for example, and that helmet could become just as distinguishable as the face.
helmets are so hard to draw,
The chain mail looks like uncooked ramen. anyone else?
Stepping On Legos it looks like the terrible butted chainmail, the one that you could tear with your hand, the one that actually protects you is called riveted chainmail.
***** after looking at both Butted and riveted images, I saw that his drawing style with the macaronis resemble more like riveted ones than butted.
Stepping On Legos i guess, but you cant see any of the rivets which is what i was looking for. it doesn't matter anyway its just a nitpick
***** Yea ok. You seem to know alot about these types of armour. Where did you learn? I'm very interested in medieval combat.
There's a youtuber called Shadiversity thats can teach you alot
Who’s watching in 2019 or later?
hallo
Sup
I'm here a year later
tigergirljamie7 I have returned after 11 months of long fighting, the war has changed me in so many ways
@@arthurguseynov7167 oh dear that is a long time in battle. Did your amrour hold up ? Is that why you're still with us
I watched it with captions, every time you said armour, it came up with Obama, so when you said pieces of armour, it said pieces of Obama xD
that's the secret message #illuminati
#They'reEverywhere #illuminati XD Wasn't expecting that reply.
Quin- Mackenzie Foster i had a dream last night. where Illuminati took over the world and replaced their spaceship with the sun so when i looked up all i saw was a giant illuminati pyramid spaceship and also there was a gigantic rope from the earth to the spaceship. and after that i went into a forest and as i went into it all the colours were switching and were really bright, and then 3 leopards and 1 lion came. i fought the 3 leopards and my friend fought the lion.
Thesphaxers they already did that, now go fight the damn leopards already
LOL! I can't stop laughing when it shows obama.
I usually play without helmet even if it lowers my stats, hell, I prefer lower class armor if it looks better :D I prefer esthetics over stats, good to know I'm not the only one.
The higher you go in armor, and even sometimes weapons, the worse it looks in most games :P. You're not alone :D
SAME
AlexanderHL except skyrim. WOOO
AlexanderHL da hell is wrong with you people?
(Just a joke because Im a stats guy)
Lots of armour can be heavy as well so I usually go for light armour or in skyrims case I go all out.
Years later going back through your old vids. Loving the tutorials. You have improved a lot since these, but they are great for seeing where you came from and a great way to learn how to break into these skills.
It depends a lot on my game. If the face of my character is hideous I put a helmet to hide the abomination, if it's a character I made with a character creator I tend to not want to put helmets on it.
If I'm developing a character though, I will probably use helmets for 3 things.
1: Mystifying characters (hide their gender and whatnot)
2: "Mass Production" if I'm drawing an army I think drawing a bunch of helmets is easier than drawing heads and faces on them all. Same as if I'm making city guards or something (and you've seen this in elder scrolls really, they tend to just cover guards faces with helmets in there or if they do not then they all have the exact same face)
3: Realism (what kind of a medieval dark fantasy battlefield is littered with unarmored heads? (answer: where the warriors were peasants))
But in a video game, I don't wear a helmet on my character unless I hate their face or just generally don't see their face (first person only games)
***** The elder scrolls series from 3 to 5 and TESO, SWTOR, Dark Souls, Fallout 3, Mass Effect... most roleplaying games worth their salt have a half decent character creator.
yea
well what i mean is i was watching the video and jazza says to say what you think about the whole helmet thing so i was gonna say it depends on the game and more importantly the face itself because if my face look hideous imma where a helmet but if it looks decent or even incredable im not wherein anything
Cestarian Inhabitant I always wear them. they look cool
"The fantasy style doesn't necessarily focus on protecting everything - especially when you're drawing armor on females. We're just going to be drawing armor on males in general and these apply to drawing them on females, but they're shaped somewhat differently to fit the form of a female - and also historically if females wore armor they wouldn't have worn armor that was much different than the males, they wouldn't worry about showing their feminine form BUT when we're drawing it we do want to show the femininity of the character."
First of all thank you. Armor can be drawn functionally on females with out sacrificing everything feminine.
Secondly, thank you for laying out the areas of coverage and explaining how attachments help maintain flexibility. I could always block in armor pieces but it was taking me forever to understand how different plates and panels attached. Your tutorial definitely helps me figure out how to assemble suits or sections for my commissions and characters. Especially layered armor. Goodness, the different interlocking pieces on the chest make so much more sense now.
I agree, most of the time, that I like being able to identify characters without their helmets - unless that character has a unique armor set for an essential reason, then I don't mind a helm.
Hip armor is usually called the tasset. I was looking those up just the other day. I've seen some hanging off belts and some as an extension of the breastplate (A Knight's Tale).
Again, awesome video and thanks for sharing!
Another great reference is the Dark Souls Design Works guide.
Or just actual surviving armors from the middle ages (which is what the Dark Souls devs referenced in the first place).
Noted
or beserk which dark soul also took inspration from
The boba fett helmet at 3:00 is a barbute by the way. As far as I know, used a lot by Italians during the 15th century.
Yup, and the Italians of the time wanted to emulate the iconic middle European(esp. Corinthian) antique design. That is one of the examples where design came first, practicality second even in history.
Häijy Velho I am glad to see some others here who have good knowledge of arms and armour
Wow, 40 minutes?! It felt like 10 minutes! You're explaining and showing everything in such way that it's really easy to watch!
WHAT! the bar at the bottom of videos is broken for me, so i had no idea it went for that long
it felt like 2 hours for me because me internet is shit.
I'm a big fan of armour. Medieval armour, fantasy, futuristic, you name it! I think I'll actually use this to figure out some different styles I have in mind. Thanks!
I lol'd when you said fantasy armour doesn't really focus on protecting ËSPECIALLY on female. So true haha. Koreans wins hands down at creating fantasy armours especially in MMOs LOL!
Of course, you won't get amazing reviews, but the feedback process and beginning the process of getting your work out there and challenging yourself to improve, is a very important thing to learn :)
First i think
Watching these videos reminds me of why I started drawing in the first place. You use your imagination to create unique and interesting things, something I used to do but forgot about until recently when watching your videos. I have been watching these all day and drawing along with them. Thank you for this content, I look forward to seeing more in the future. You are very inspiring.
The creativity and talent this guy has is surprisingly amazing, making armor without any kind of complication or sketching just surprise me. good luck and keep up the good work pal!
Macaroni crotch-guards. Okay then.
ThatGuyHeyo GREY* macaroni crotch-guatds
silly, silly, man, that's not macaroni, that's uncooked ramen.
ThatGuyHeyo XD
Imagine getting shot in the balls. "God DAMN this macaroni crotch guard! Jazza I told you this wouldn't work!" XD
It is a very sturdy material.
Added to my to-do list :)
I've been struggling with armor for the past few days, this has helped me a lot. Thanks!
This is honestly one of the most helpful videos I have seen on RUclips. Thank you so much, Jazza.
first time watching one of your vids but im subbing.
Thanks! I hope it's worth your while :)
Draw with Jazza Hi, Jazz, I want to start doing some simple animation, Can you recommend something to do it with? Flash? and where I can get it?
Draw with Jazza you helped a lot!!! thanks
same here
same
Without thinking i automatically said bless you when you sneezed...... force of habit -_-
Never knew how to draw armor until i learn from the basics :) thank you man.
I love how simplified your steps are.
U deserve way more subscribers than u already have right now
The hip guard is called a fauled and tassets
thanks for helping me improve my armor Jazza. it went from being awesome TO BEING EPIC!
Jazza, the pauldrons can be connected to the gorget or the cuirass, usually by leather straps. Prevents them from flapping around when you're moving your arms. Excellent work with the armour layouts too.
Who else wanted some inspiration on drawing armor and watched this old vid?
I usually like to see characters with either no helmet or unique armor so they are distinguishable from the other soldiers
That's how its done to tell if they're a a general or some commander lol I think For Honor went too far by making all the foot soliders midgets
I've been trying to get into comics and your videos are the most helpful I've seen yet, i like seeing how something is done in real time- time lapse is great and all, but you miss out on a lot of minute details! thanks for uploading, only had to watch two vids to know i had to subscribe, love your work! its very inspiring and encouraging!
So cool!! I love the dragon armor!
Your new videos are fun, but these old videos are way more informative. I really like this style. I realize the old videos are still available, but would love to see a modern take on them. You’ve changed over the years and I feel like these videos would change too.
Hey Jazza! Can you please draw SWORDS.
Macoroni swords
9:30
Link: It's not a skirt! IT'S A TUNIC! *quiet sobbing*
It's dangerous to go alone, take this.
Thanks a lot man I needed this.
I love your work man
where and how did you learn to draw like you do?
practice, some books, and making lots of projects :)
i like putting helmets on characters for my games simply because im too lazy to design a whole new character everytime :P
Thanks Jazza, I thoroughly enjoyed this one.
I'm so glad I subscribed! You're awesome!
I don't like helmets on my characters either. Especially not, when I created my own character, like in Dragon Age. I installed the NoHelmets mod, so it does not show them. I mean why do I create a cool character just to cover it in armor ;)
GreenBeal unless it's Power armour. POW
Dramatic face reveal :o
i learn how to draw and how to speak english properly
I'm binging your videos dude. You are the biggest inspiration when it comes to rawing for me. Thank you!
Quick tip here, in historical armor (mostly northern Italian , in the 15th century) the armor being custom fit to the wearer would have one shoulder (left if right handed, right if left handed) would be bigger for defense, the other would be far smaller and more maneuverable for attacking.
ok i live in America but judging by Jazza's accent it sounds like he is from the UK or something so im suprised he didnt spell it armour
Asa Hamada he sounds austrailian to me, listen to the intro
Lol yeah your right
Asa Hamada I'm from the uk and I spell it armor
He is an Aussie. As a New Zealander myself, I can tell an Australian when I hear one.
Fiona Dye I'm British I have a Aussie friend and we sound do not sound the same at all
how do you get your brush strokes so smooth, when i draw on my tablet i my lines come out wonkey alot of the time, is it just with a lot of practice that it will come to you?( i have just started on tablet so still a noobie)
I think the program he uses has something that auto-smooths his lines, because the lines are really rough and jagged as he draws them, but when he releases the mouse button they suddenly smooth out.
hay dont know if you are still wondering but he is using flash which is vector based so it curves his lines out. I guess you are using photoshop, try different brushes that might help. or give flash a shot. getting those smooth lines in photoshop is tricky and i am still looking for a technique. hope that helps
Thomas White ah thanks, yes i am using photoshop i will give other brushes ago when i get a chance busy with uni at the moment=p
roman11777 Thanks did not know that =p
Have a look at Kyle T Webster brushes they're additional brushes for Ps and give a lot more variety!
Great video Jazza. I love how u say "arma". :)
I like it when characters in games and movies have helmets. It adds to the intrigue, the mystery of the character
i think jazza plays skyrim
Nuka Cola probably does cause that's Nordic armour right thar
like for dragon helm +10
Stop being so freaking good at everything you do!
I love how this channel developed so much :3
First, when I play Skyrim I generally use a helmet when I intend to be in combat for the obvious practical bonus, but usually take it off when I play in 3rd person and walk around a city and leave it off if I plan on not getting into any trouble (which usually doesn't last long).
Second, I don't draw, but I was hoping I could recommend this video to a friend that does and get her to draw some stuff for me, but I have a problem with the false information you are throwing around.
I think the most irritating thing in your video (other than the fact that a short Wikipedia journey could clear up everything you needed help with in a short period of time) is the inaccurate portrayal of how gauntlets were made, worn and used. The entire bit of armor that one would wear on the lower arm and hand is not called a gauntlet, (Skyrim can probably be blamed for that one, though. Haha.) it is actually two pieces. The piece of armor covering the lower arm is called a vambrace. The gauntlet is a separate piece that goes on after the vambrace. The opening has a sort of hourglass shape to it to make it easier to rotate the wrist and get your hand in.
The neck/upper chest plate, is a gorget, not the chain mail, (coif would be correct, BTW. Good job.) or, --fun fact-- a bevor if you are wearing a sallet style helmet and the armor makes a sort of collar that goes up to the bottom of the jaw.
The shoulder armor would probably be called pauldrons, but your layered style could be argued to be the earlier type, called spaulders.
The breast plate is called a cuirass. It could be called a breast plate, but if you want to impress your friends, call it a cuirass.
Your hip armor would be called faulds. That is all.
Spikes? Fuuuuuck.... I realize that's more of a stylistic choice than a practical one, but --no, just no. If someone hits one of those with their weapon, it might yank your arm halfway across the battlefield.
The surcoat does not go under your armor. It absolutely is the most outermost garment other than possibly a cape or cloak. You may be thinking of an arming doublet/jacket or coat, gambeson, aketon or something of the ilk, but those definitely go under your chain mail and plates.
I could probably go back through this video and find a handful of other inaccurate things, but to avoid being labeled as an annoying internet troll for forever I will refrain, b/c I am not really trying to do that.
I would suggest you look up a video called How A Man Shall Be Armed and go through Wikipedia. There is a list of every piece of European medieval armor all on one page with pictures and descriptions of each. You may want to consider a redux or a self-correction something. I wouldn't want to be misinformed or misinform someone else. If I did draw, I'm sure I would have found this very helpful, and, while this is just based on this video alone, you are a talented artist.
Letho Zykurous thank you but don't blame skyrim
That was a pretentious ass of a comment, but media in general is to blame for a lot of misinformation about stuff like that. So, it kind of is Skyrim's fault-to some extent.
Yeah, but I don't see myself pretentious. I'm actually quite polite and would never sell a cheaper thing off as such larger price intended. I play Skyrim a lot so I guess I just defend it a lot. I for one use swap helmets. Such as horned helmets you can see my face through ( i usually play as an argonian or a khajiit) for the reasons of looks. I only put on my best helmet (usually not the best looking) on during battle similar to you. I usually just wear helmets a lot. I played (and still do) Skyrim for a LONG time. So defending it is within my rights, just so ya know I have NOTHING against others who do not like Skyrim or just wearing helmets in general. I'm just sharing my opinion.
No, I was talking about the one two-years-ago-me made. (And apparently I can't edit it.... WTF?)
what program are you using and is it free
I got an A+ on my art project because of this video thanks jazza
I really like this sort of video. REally nicely done I say.
All the females got triggered
not this one, I think it's funny how females never get armour that would actually help in battle.
This is great, thanks for the video Jazza.
So far I love all of your work o: Gonna watch every video of your's ! xD
deamn ! so simple,so nice :D
love it
so god damn awesome! thank u jazza!
This Video Really helped me, I'm making a book and am working on the cover and this gave me a ton of new ideas I could use to make the cover more interesting
Nice video man! Thumbs up, great artist
I don't really draw very often, and I draw armor even less often. But, I like seeing characters with their helmet and then also without their helmet. Helmets can bring more intimidation for villains, especially since a helmet can make them look more monstrous, or less human.
this has been so helpful ty! i know its been 9 years but still Ty
Soooo awesome!! :D
I am not very experienced in digital drawing, but are remarked for traditional drawing; that being said, I have drawn several types of armor and you are absolutely right regarding to making the shapes of the armor. I found your style for chainmail interesting, as I mostly do crosshatching (I know it's not accurate, but it sells the look.) I would however, like to see you show how to color them, as I am trying to get into digital drawing and am confused about proper shading and highlighting. Thank you for your time.
Great tutorial keep doing more!
thanks I'm a big fan of dark souls and I really needed to know how to draw the bassets things about armor, thanks buddy
+SmilEy b0mb Me too, silver knight shoulder pads at 28:06
Definitely practice. Confidence is also important. Speed also helps with making lines look smooth.
Just what I needed
You could do pretty much anything in full plate armor that you could do in you birthday suit. Armor was meant to be flexible, they didn't want soldiers fussing with it in the middle of battle.
Thank you! this helped a lot!
jazza has come such a long way he is so much more confident now
Helped a lot thanks!😀
his take on fantasy armors on female are on point, I've been trying to find a good reference for my character (one that can give more movements and also light weighted) but so far I've found those extravagant ones 😅 and just proceeded to use the male's
Excellent, thanks!
Thanks mate you have helped me a lot
I love wearing helmets it makes you look mysterious and badass
Thanks for the Tutorial. Im not really good at drawing armors, but for the rpg i am playing, i wanted to design my knight :D (The dark eye, Das schwarze Auge in German). It helped me a lot :) And looks a lot better than my first attempt! Subscribed^^
thanks been tryin to figure out arms and waists so yah thank you very much
tis is for a different video. my computer wouldn't let my say anything
The second video I saw from you I subscribed.... I don't regret it at all
I expected a paper drawn version, not a digital one, this helps, but doesn't at rhe same time. Keep up the good work 😊
That's so cool!
Thanks for this, Jazza! I absolutely love armor of all kinds (usually more towards game-type armor, less historical armor), so this was a blast to watch...
As for myself with helmets and such, it depends. Typically, I'd rather show my character's head and/or face, as that keeps my character true to himself rather than what the armor tells. But if I go for a heavy armor look, like something huge and bulky, I go with a closed helm to match. So for me: full helmet, or no helmet. No halfway point.
This was really helpful thanks
Really cool and helpful
Love your drawings
your good at drawing Jazza!
Interlinking chains tips is helpful, I usually try half circles almost like "U's"
Thanks !!! You really help me !!!!
Thank you so much!
I understand armor now :')
Awesome video! I've been trying to draw a character of mine for MONTHS:
I love your tutorials
I have the same tendency, either for games or drawings I rarely use helmets to cover the character's face. If I use a helmet the face area is opened.
it's amazing!!!
