Every game in existence making you craft armor out of just metal bars with no lining or padding, that's just illogical - which always brings me to the only sensible piece of armor in World of Warcraft, some metal chestplate that takes a leather chestpiece in its crafting.
In GW2 all heavy armour sets use cloth padding during the crafting process. Casing and padding are crafted separately, then put together to craft the armour piece. The end result is rarely historically accurate or even believable though, but fantasy MMORPGs...

The suspension rig in those helmets is comfortable but should still be used with padding at least to the sides. The suspension asorbs shock from downward strikes. Side strikes have little or no absorsion. In a bscinet with a chain aventail, this weight of the chain serves to absorb some sideways momentum and protect your neck from wiplash. One topic that these guys should have covered with more clarity is that heavy helmets have higher innate inertia meaning that they take much more energy to move and so protect you from neck injury. If you are larping then go for a light helm. If you are fighting with Buhurt or other full speed full contact style then absorbing energy from all directions is very important.
Firstly, a sincere thank you to all of you. And to you, Shad, your humility is truly inspiring. I wish a courage and persévérance with your health situation. Cordially, William
I also have a soft spot for the Kettle Helmet. For adventuring it just has so much utility not just as a helmet but as a proper hat, and it is most likely the easiest on the coin purse considering how little work really needs to go into that, especially compared to the full helms with visors or articulation and such.
And something brought up by another RUclipsr is that you're not going to be in full armour the whole time. If you're marching, you don't want to be wearing your war armour, that's with the rest of your gear. What you want is something so that if you do get attacked on the road, you're not completely unarmoured, and that is where the kettle helmet excels - you could comfortably wear it all day every day, yet it offers a very good amount of protection, and if you know you're about to be in combat, you can switch to your better helmet
also doubles as a water vessel, or even a cooking pot (though that could ruin the temper pretty easily if you applied direct heat - better to use a hot stone)
I now notice the T-Barbute became the inspiration for Star War's Mandalorian helmets, menacing look while still being practical perfect for a faction of battle fanatics.
I love how in depth you guys went on this. Most people don't consider breathing, sight, and hearing as being important. They just want max protection, but not having your full senses and being able to breath easy is just as important.
As a former infantry soldier who fought in Afghanistan, I can absolutely attest to the fact that you want a full range of your senses. It's just as important in modern times.
Not only do I LOVE the little skits and just seeing how these guys have fun together, but the amount of trust they have in each other is amazing to see. I have a group I practice with weekly with bottle cutting and such and we're huge on blade safety. To have someone even weakly swing a blunt at your helmet requires serious trust in the other person to do safely. And to be the one swinging at your friend? To me that's even harder. You have to have faith in them, as well as yourself. Seeing them not only have fun, but trust each other this much? Truly impressive and it just adds to my already over the top hype for the direction this channel is taking. Damn good adventure, grateful to be here for it!
A fun theory that has been in the back of my mind is that many Celtic helmets actually did have wings and many Viking helmets did have horns, but they were not literal wings and horns. In a some ways the cheek guards look like/resemble flapping wings to a common person. Similar to the nasile guard, same may have thought they looked a lot like a horn or tusk. I wander if there are any historical records that would suggest that. Haha if true, that Roman ridge helmet is both winged and horned! Best of both worlds!

Something I loved about the siege of helms deep, with all the uruk-hai stood at the wall, was their breath vapour shooting out of the bottom of the helmets. It was great visual language, it made them look pumped up and mean. With those helmets I can just imagine standing on the battlefield early on a foggy autumn/winter English morning, cavalry and knights billowing vapour into the air waiting for the battle to begin.

I really like the options of the sallet, being able to choose if you want your entire head covered in steel or leave parts open to breathe better if you're not fighting something that is able to stab. also i like the sallet because its german translation is Schaller and another meaning for that word is a loud banging noise/ intense feeling after being struck
Very nice to have some credit where it’s due for Celtic inventions. Many thanks, we are so often overshadowed by the Romans, who get the credit for our efforts.

Really enjoying the recent videos. Keep it going!
I love the Hounskull and German Sallet helmets. To me they look absolutely fierce, and the full plate with all the decorations and ridges that are usually associated with Sallet helmets are just wonderful. I do enjoy that the Brits looking for a helmet for their doughboys in WW1 looked at the Kettle helmet and thought, "yeah this will work" and it absolutely did. As for my helmet pick if I were an adventurer? If I had lived my life as a boy, teen, and adult learning to fight in armor and all the intricacies that entails then I'd definitely go for the Hounskull. If I was a merc previously or just some dude I'd pick the kettle and call it a day. Great video though, I learned ALOT.
Kettle helm with a candlestick affixed ontop. For delving into unlit caves and tombs, while still being able to wield an armament in/with both hands. Or, a helmet that has the "light" cantrip cast on it works too. Atleast if nothing else, the other adventurers will be able to see where their tank "Headlamps McGee" has gone.
Man I'm loving these new videos. I've always enjoyed this channel and what you have done Shad. That being said I'm very much enjoying the dynamic between the 3 of you.
What I really liked about this video WHICH YOU SHOULD DO WAY MORE especially in this cimparison is show you changed the vision for the viewer while showing the helmet, this was really good.

This is amazing! I loved the armet with the double pivot point. That was probably my favorite. That or the coif with the face visor and the cross cut out. Gorgeous swords. Amazing job, Shad and team!
From what I have read, a 19th century opera custom designer placed horns on a helmet. These got popular among the operas of the period and especially with Wagner operas.

I love Nate's enthusiasm on the topic and discussion. specially the practical elements of different types of Helmets and also thanks to Shad for pointing out the fantasy elements an adventurer may face. Pretty cool stuff
Yeah, in my opinion it is a strong contender for the best helmet for an adventurer, at least if they have more money, particularly when paired with an articulated bevor. If they need visibility and breath ability they could raise the visor, tilt the helm back, and lower the bevor, and the face would be completely open, but it still offers excellent protection to the back of the neck and sides of the helm, and at any time if they feel additional protection is needed they could very rapidly raise the bevor, tilt the helm and lower the visor, and they can do any combination of tilted helm, raised visor, and lowered bevor as needed.
Gotta hard disagree, the Sallet with the bevor that covers your whole mouth and nose, with nothing more than a slit for vision has got to be the worst helmet for adventuring. You open yourself to ambushes with how limiting it is for visibility, and it's not quick and efficient to add/remove the face coverage. A simple Bascinet is probably the best. You have tons of options for face masks (pig face, klappvisor, nasal, cross and more) they can be swung open and quickly shut when needed, or fully removed. Most of this comes from HMB experience, but having fought in both helms, I HATED the sallet and its one of the least popular in the sport. It excels in protection which is why it was prominent in history but its a big trade off, they have terrible breathing and terrible vision. (when combined with the bevor) but without the bevor your throat is exposed. The armet has most of the same features as the salet but it allows instant flip up of your vision AND breathing when needed. You can only flip the vision of a Sallet in mid combat. the bevor takes time to equip.
I’m writing a fantasy story and I couldn’t imagine the helmets the elite class of warrior would wear. Watching this, I’ve decided on fantasy-style barb uits and bassinets with griffin visors. Thanks for giving me the inspiration.

Kettle helmet and sallet are probably some of the best adventurer helmets (alongside Roman style helmets) exactly because they were favored for the common foot soldier; a soldier, like an adventurer, needs to be able to do a lot of menial tasks without being hindered by the armor and most of the heavier, more covering helmets would simply be too much of a hassle for every-day use.
My favorite has always been the Sallet, but playing the game Kingdom Come Deliverance made me fall more in love with the Bassinet especially with the corvid visor (aka pigs faced.)

If they're not too late in period I'd say morions and burgonets would be great for adventurers because the comb and brims are great for preventing slashing. They also look like they'd be better for campaigning since you can wear them comfortably and also put them on in a rush. But if those two are too late I have to agree that the kettle helm would be better than most others.

even if you get rung like a bell's clapper, it's better than direct contact
Firstly, a sincere thank you to all of you. And to you, Shad, your humility is truly inspiring. I wish a courage and persévérance with your health situation. Cordially, William
Hear, hear!
Well put
I also have a soft spot for the Kettle Helmet. For adventuring it just has so much utility not just as a helmet but as a proper hat, and it is most likely the easiest on the coin purse considering how little work really needs to go into that, especially compared to the full helms with visors or articulation and such.
And some models can serve as a bowl for food!
And something brought up by another RUclipsr is that you're not going to be in full armour the whole time. If you're marching, you don't want to be wearing your war armour, that's with the rest of your gear. What you want is something so that if you do get attacked on the road, you're not completely unarmoured, and that is where the kettle helmet excels - you could comfortably wear it all day every day, yet it offers a very good amount of protection, and if you know you're about to be in combat, you can switch to your better helmet
also doubles as a water vessel, or even a cooking pot (though that could ruin the temper pretty easily if you applied direct heat - better to use a hot stone)
or even a cooking pot if you used a hot stone, not direct heat @@Sk0lzky
I now notice the T-Barbute became the inspiration for Star War's Mandalorian helmets, menacing look while still being practical perfect for a faction of battle fanatics.
I'd actually argue that the Mandalorian helmet is based off of Greek hoplite designs.
I'm loving the direction this channel is going to so far! The recent videos have all been so educational and entertaining! The shorts are great too!
The lads are legends. Im so glad Shad that not only is this better for your health, but the chemistry is perfect. What a brilliant group
I really enjoyed the camera overlays to simulate the first person view in each helm!
LOVING the medieval myth busting so far.
Gotta win the Bec de Corbin cameo!

i love the attention to detail by having a sound when you remove the helmet, very nice. these videos help a lot with my blacksmith DND character, love to call out mid battle when someones helmet sucks and slap the side of the helmet so hard they perish.
I love kettle helms so much, they are way to underappreciated in media, though I guess you could say that about most helmets. Thanks for the video, it was great. It's always nice to see that there indeed does exist people who genuinely care about the history of armour. We need people like you guys supervising movies and shows.
I didn't plan to watch the whole 50 minutes in one go, but literally got stuck to the screen. Absolutely amazing presentation skills by Nate!
I'm currently playing Kingdom Come Deliverence while watching you guys talk about Medieval Helmets 😍 perfect Saturday morning 🤓
Love that game!
Fantastic mate I love Kingdom Come Deliverance.
I wish more games had the headpiece overlay be googles or barrel helm
Taren and Nate make a superb team. Bringing them on to assist was a significant improvement. Not that I don't love Shad but having the two of them collaborate with Shad offering occasional input is definitely a winning formula.
Your Australian or NZ accents are so pleasant to listen to. I'm not a native English speaker, but I think English is such a great language for accents, they all sound great.
Cheers from Norway.

I love the new dynamic in the Shadiversity team
Same!
As my reward for staying up till 3am on a work night, I get a MASSIVE addition to the Shadiverse!
I'd love to see shad and friends in a medieval fantasy movie.😁 I think their dynamics would translate great into film. It would probably have to be a bit of a comedy though.
Mix these guys up with epic npc guys! Welcome to honeywood!

I love the childish silliness you guys have with these informative videos. Proof that videos can be funny and highly informative
This one was one of the best videos you have ever done. Kuddos to the team and Nate is awesome ! He speaks with so much passion about this. Love the energy !
Videos like these help keep me in a good direction for doing proper research for a series I’m writing. Thank you sm Shad ⚔️ ❤️ your channel is one of the best on RUclips.
My personal favorite is the barbute. Great balance beetween protection and visibility
It look good.
I think I like the kettle helm alot too.
Having these guys on board to help Shad is such a blessing. So much fun.
Man, I don’t know how I got here, but I’m all for it, it’s so nice to see people passionate about stuff, also the fact when they did the drum skit, he said at the end he wanted to try with swords
Gah dang. U gave me chills sir
Shad is definitely feeling better and I’m super proud of y’all for hitting a “swing” of things (pun intended.) videos feel much more relaxed and natural.
Shad: I heard we're hitting things.
Nate: NO!
So the testers and build crew are there to keep Shad in line... very wise.
There's something just so Monty-Python-esque about great helms! LOL Another great video, guys!
The A.D.D in this video is astounding.....
The length and work putted in this video is crazy. Incrdible work everybody!
So many wonderful things to praise... Gonna pick demonstrating the field of vision for the camera and making sure to call out that you are not actually being reckless and you are thinking about safety. You all are the best!
What a revival of the channel!, great work by all the guys very well done and entertaining. continue the great work!
Really cool seeing you together, there is a great dynamic between you all
instructive, fun and enjoyable videos that put a smile on your face
Thank you Shad
I really like the options of the sallet, being able to choose if you want your entire head covered in steel or leave parts open to breathe better if you're not fighting something that is able to stab.
also i like the sallet because its german translation is Schaller and another meaning for that word is a loud banging noise/ intense feeling after being struck
Very nice to have some credit where it’s due for Celtic inventions.
Many thanks, we are so often overshadowed by the Romans, who get the credit for our efforts.
I know she's not quite what most people mean when they say Celtic, but Queen Boudicca chased the Romans off (temporarily).
Legendary.
That barrel helm is like the One Ring. Everyone wants it.
Personally, I think my favorite is the griffon helm.
Tom Bombadil didn't want the ring and just tossed it away
@mneech609 Tom Bombadil was the exception, not the rule. He is a Maiar more powerful than Gandalf. He is already immortal. He is separate from society and is neither good nor evil. The One Ring had nothing to offer him.
I like the new format,y’all have great chemistry
What a great crew. I love the dynamic between you guys, and the recent videos have been great. Good mix of fun and education (great for getting the kids interested), and I think they appeal to both newbies unfamiliar with the sword community and those of us who have been around for decades. Really enjoying the recent videos. Keep it going!
The two extra homies are ducking perfect additions, love the chemistry and jokes thrown in
I love the Hounskull and German Sallet helmets.
So great to see all those examples in one place; love the buddy-comedy vibe!
Love that so many videos have been coming out with a broad range of topics. I hope Shad has been able to get some good rest with these two around.
What I really liked about this video WHICH YOU SHOULD DO WAY MORE especially in this cimparison is show you changed the vision for the viewer while showing the helmet, this was really good.
that's a nifty little greathelm you got there. I have always loved the Sicilian style phygerian helmet with gilded faceplate.
these videos are so playful and educational at the same time and it's perfect
At first I though "I'll just watch the first 5/10 mins and pick it up later" but found myself watching the entire thing in one sitting! Great job by Nate carrying the video so engagingly.
The trust is amazing! You guys can practically leave your life in each other's hands. Keep up the good work.
Nate is a wonderful edition to this channel.
I haven't watched in years, was skeptical of the new members (just because I like Shad's personality), but Nate is awesome.
Love the people helping shad with videos
What a fun engaging episode, I learned so much. I honestly didn't know that the wardens helmet was a thing. For Honor really did help give more acknowledgment to that helm. A visored barbute huh...
The burgundian flutted skull kettle, has always been one of my favorites. So loved the fellow kettle helm appreciator.
I am liking the new format! It is fun to see more of the guys coming about on the Versity. Hope your health is stabilizing!
Dudes this is my wholesome therapy. Love the channel all the knights feel like real bros u could chill with. Love all the back and forth having a good time. Never change. Hope u doing well Shad
honestly one of the best videos yet. love the energy nate brings
This was an amazing walkthrough of medieval renaissance helmets. It was both educational and fun!
22:52 for some reason I absolutely adore this helmet, just love it
It feels a bit weird having the new cast of presenters but its already starting to grow on me. thanks for all your hard work on these videos.
I love Nate's enthusiasm on the topic and discussion. specially the practical elements of different types of Helmets and also thanks to Shad for pointing out the fantasy elements an adventurer may face.
Pretty cool stuff
infectious enthusiasm is an ENORMOUSLY effective teaching tool
The way Nate puts the Crusader helmet on is the content I need in my life.
Swords are cool too.
I love the vision filter of these helmets. I'd be happy with an entire episode of vision.
Loving this new dynamic keep up the great work guys
I love what you're doing with the channel now- so many great characters... Shadiversity indeed 👍
The sallet is by far my favorite helmet. The fact that it had great breathability and protection is just amazing. Plus, it's the one helmet I have IRL

This is going to be so useful for me, thank you kindly. I'm going to model my own helmet and 3d print it and I got a few ideas how to improve it from your vid. Love you guys, the chemistry between you is amazing ♥
Kettle hat is the perfect run of the mill any weather adventuring helmet.
Love to see this trio of sword and armour experts discuss and educate about why people of the past design products as such. 👍🏻
shad taking off the crusader helm was oddly photogenic
My favorite has always been the Sallet, but playing the game Kingdom Come Deliverance made me fall more in love with the Bassinet especially with the corvid visor (aka pigs faced.)
deliverance is a great game
@@ganymedes8 I would like to see more RPGs made in that style.

Ps : Love the trio and others that you've been bringing on keep up the amazing work.
These three are so fun to watch together!
The German Sallet helmet is my favorite, just above the great helm. It just looks so good, and it has cultural significance to me.
This was the second of your videos I ever watched, and it's still one of my favorites!
