    What do you guys think of the Boonedox Landing gear???

    • @LackofEffort
      @LackofEffort 4 года назад

      They look/sound cheap. Are they really hard plastic? It doesnt look like they would work well in sand either. Have you used them on the beach?

    • @mackb3164
      @mackb3164 4 года назад

      I have the new groovy version on my Titan... it looks nice. No issues with the plastic brackets yet... I liked the old version more. The groovy landing gear sticks A LOT. I’ve tried dry lube, grease, etc. hasn’t broke in yet I guess.

    • @aaanglers
      @aaanglers  4 года назад

      @@mackb3164 So I checked mine and it turned out that I had overtightened the bolts causing an indent in the knuckle. This made it hard to insert the wheel arm. I would double check your knuckles to see if they are damaged. Otherwise lube and leverage gets it done.

      Burly Fishing I had an issue initially with my hardware constantly coming loose, so I added lock washers and locktite. But maybe I over tightened it. I’ll check...

      Installed the landing gear on my Titan 2 years ago. No problems.
      I DID cut the "excess" off the arm, where the wheels go. (Made it easier to pull-up the wheels, when on the water - OR lowering them...!)

    @Burly Fishing.... Awesome video as usual. Thanks for posting these! I can't help wondering if we could mount it (with some hardware changes like new H rail with T groove) to the top of the rail rather than beneath the rail? It would be about 3-4" shorter when deployed, but much easier to install/remove, and no holes required. I wouldn't store it with the wheels in place (to reduce fatigue), but for short duration should be fine. btw loved your trick with using a wire to pull the bracket up. Not sure why I didn't think of that one. Tight lines!
    Ooops... I should have read Nelson Peter's post first. I completely agree with him. Should have read all the responses first.

    I had the original Boonedox Landing gear on my 2012 PA 14. It was flawless and worked great with a heavy load every time. This year 2017 PA 12 the new groovy style second outing snapped both plastic ears from binding up in some soft sand. And no I didn’t have any sand tires the sand had a soft spot. Basically the arms of the tires are like breaker bars and snapped both side of the ears off instantly. The old style setup hands down was and is the best Boonedox design in my opinion. Especially when it comes to a PA that has some weight.

    • @aaanglers
      @aaanglers  4 года назад +1

      100% agree! Boonedox had to update the plastic gussets and retro fit everyone. They sent me a new set to replace the plastic with metal gussets.

    I really like your idea of the extra reinforcement. 👍🏼 I just ordered my 360 PA-14 and already received the groovy landing gear plus extra parts. Did you use the sealant between the backing plates and the boat as well? Why or why not? Ty

    • @aaanglers
      @aaanglers  4 года назад +1

      Just in the drilled holes. Nor reason not to, other than difficulty reaching that part of the boat. I think all plates are standard sized now, so if you have the HD hardware, you can always replace pieces no problem.

      That’s what I was thinking. I have one on my 2018 PA 14 and it was a monster to install it under the H rail. You have to have extra long arms, although the wire trick works it was still very challenging.

  • @CrazyCranker
    @CrazyCranker 3 года назад

    I think I had the ultimate nightmare install on record. I have the first gen landing gear for my 2015 PA12. The bolts seemed too short to thread in. :( after a week of frustration I gave up.
    :( Boonedox finally sent me some longer bolts that worked but, found out they were not stainless and started to rust. First time I used the sand wheels they would not come up. they were locked in place when under the water. Had to spend more money to buy the tuff wheels.
    Never again-lol, I have moved on to the "Wilderness Systems cart" one cart for all my boats. :)

    When you were installing, it looked like you took off the back and front parts of the rail for the spacers, but I did not see the center piece removed (where the rudder control is). Did I miss that, or do you just have the rials a half inch higher at each end? I had my boondox installed by the seller (who will remain nameless) on my Pro14and they said they could not install behind the seat because the rail was too low, so they stuck everything on the back of miner - done several years ago and I am sill o'oed. Gotta get that redone.

    • @aaanglers
      @aaanglers  4 года назад

      Yeah, behind the seat is the only way. You don't remove the center piece. The spacers are 1/2 in and the rail just bends to fit the boonedox under it.

    I'm guessing that the inner pins are there instead of a spacer so you can put a wider wheel on (sand wheels maybe?). How sturdy where the legs over bumpy ground? Videos I've seen in the past they seemed to wobble quite a bit.

    • @aaanglers
      @aaanglers  4 года назад

    • @jimtress4805
      @jimtress4805 4 года назад +1

      The sand wheels also require replacement legs, when I bought my wife's through ACK they said they would just fit the existing, but they no longer sell the wheels without the legs as a package. I returned the wheels - not worth $240 for the set up to me...

    • @aaanglers
      @aaanglers  4 года назад

      So I didn't wrap the wire around the inside bar. I pushed it through the bolt hole then coiled it up so that it wouldn't pull through. This is why you need a really heavy gauge wire. Then I just pushed it back into the boat and pulled it out by hand. Hopefully that makes sense. I'll be redoing this with the new hardware on my Hobie 360 next week, so I'll try and get a better shot.

    Did cut crossbar although after getting it done decided I probably did not have to. GAVE UP ON THE WIRE thing everyone uses. Drilled holes in boat the I screwed bolts through support bracket, bought 4 stainless steel washers/lock washers/nuts, and even with my short arms could reach inside, stick the bracket with the protruding bolts into the holes and grab them from above put the plastic gusset on and snug it down with a washer/lock washer/nut. Not counting the time to get the extra hardware ($4.11) it was a 10-15 job. Trying to line up those holes with the wire to get the bolt started is RIDICULOUS. No wonder the “instructions” (if you can call them that) do not give you a hint on how to do it 🤷‍♂️😳

    Well, I was loving my groovy landing gear until today when both knuckles spun out of the gussets and the landing gear collapsed. As far as I can tell the bolts going into the gussets might have loosened up enough to allow the backing plate enough slack to slip over the small tit that is on the gusset. After seeing this happen it strikes me that those small bolts and the plastic gussets may be way too small to handle the torque and weight of pulling the kayak on the wheels. It is a lot of stress and apparently, that is the week link. There are no lock washers with the kit and not a lot of room for them either. Not sure if lock tite would help.
