    Great video! You thought your way through the install intelligently. Measure twice and cut once. Especially how you kept an even cut on the center bar and even deburring it before installation. Great attention to detail and without overly excessive commentary. Thank you for sharing this sir! 😀

    I was hesitant at first but I followed these steps and it went easy 🤓. The part about needing to run a tap through the 5/16 thread's on the backing bars was especially helpful. All 4 of mine needed it. I also had to cut the wheel mounting bars past the outside hole (3.5") so i could clear the hull on raising and lowering without the gear coming out of the base

    Thanks for the video. Mine just arrived. They now have the option on their website to order the 2019 model. This will make it a lot easier to install mine. I was just going to roll with it an figure it out. You made it look easy.

    Hey, thanks for making these videos! I ordered the kit. Im now hearing that this can crack my kayak plastic, even if I don't over tighten when installing. I have a 2021 outback. Have you had any issues?

  • @fredaw61
    @fredaw61 5 лет назад

    Now that you have had them on for a while has the hall shown and signs damage from the backing bar? The new groovey Bar looks like a better mount but I have no rear hatch to put the stiffener plate. Wondering whether to save up for both items.

    • @SouthernReelsFishing
      @SouthernReelsFishing  5 лет назад

      No signs of damage at all, and I have mounted it on 3 different Hobies. The mounting can be done from the front hatch, just remove any foam support blocks to give you enough room to fish the plates into place. The same wire trick should work.

    • @SouthernReelsFishing
      @SouthernReelsFishing  5 лет назад

      Yes the foam is just wedged in place to support the weight of the seat and standing areas. You can just pull it out to give you access to get the mounts into place. When your done just stuff the foam back into place.

    Jesse, The 2019 OB that I pick up on Sunday has this landing gear on it. I was just cautioned about it by an owner of a large yak accessory company. He advised that the weight of the yak can pull down on the mounting area and that over time, the backing plate/bolts have pulled through causing holes in the yak and voiding warranties. Stated hot days make it worse. Any signs of such wear on your yak yet? (this company sells a really nice cradle style cart, so he could be overly biased).

    • @SouthernReelsFishing
      @SouthernReelsFishing  5 лет назад +1

      Over a years usage on 3 different Hobie kayaks and no issues period. Biggest thing I see on the new Outback that might cause a problem is whoever installed the mount might overtighten the bolts which would cause the hull to spread and possibly crack over time. It would be easy to see this because there would be a bulge in the hill right under the mount.

  • @BamBamStefanko

    Do you have trouble with water coming over the bow with your 2019 compared to your 2017 Hobie?

    • @SouthernReelsFishing
      @SouthernReelsFishing  3 года назад +1

      Yes it definitely rides low in the front compared to the older Outback. I have never had it cause any major issues since my hatch seals good and most of the water just goes out of the foot well. But it is a wetter ride in rough conditions.

  • @Backlashed

    Any cracks yet? I've found two other videos about this landing gear cracking the hull after a while.

    • @SouthernReelsFishing
      @SouthernReelsFishing  3 года назад

      Nope. 4 years, 3 different kayaks and no cracks. People are either tightening the mounts too tight or are overloading the kayak from what I figure

  • @OscarMartinez-rw7tt
    @OscarMartinez-rw7tt 3 года назад

    After some use wouldn’t those holes where you mounted the bracket start splitting the kayak? I wouldn’t want to drill any holes in a pricey kayak.

    • @SouthernReelsFishing
      @SouthernReelsFishing  3 года назад

      I've had it on 3 different yaks and have never had a problem. trick is to just snug the bolts up, don't overtighten them.

    Perfect timing!
    A landing gear for my 2019 outback was just delivered and this video will be helpful!
    1 question I have,
    When you tightened the screws to the round backing rod do you just snug it up lightly or are you completely tightening it down?
    I’m concerned the round backing rod will deform the hull after time?
    I bass fish and usually bring 5-6 rods and lots of bass gear which adds quite a bit of weight to the outback. The added weight of my gear is sure to add extra stress to the mounting area.
    After owning the landing gear on a few previous kayaks it’s now a must have for me!
    Makes things so much easier!

    • @SouthernReelsFishing

      I have had it on 3 yaks now and never a single issue. I think the problem people have is they overtighten the mounts. I use sealant and loctite and tighten the mounting bolts to where they are just snug. definitely don't want to go so tight that it start deforming the hull around the mount.

    I like those wheels much better than the stock hard ones. My only complaint with boonedox is the wide bracket. Just the square bar designed with thru bolts through the bracket, a backplate and through center round bar would be much cleaner and just as strong or stronger.

    Excellent video!! I really was amazed with that wire trick; you make it look too easy. Boone Dox should have given you that set just so that you could this video for them. I agree that the wheel arms look better set more internally. It will also decrease any obstruction the protruding arms have along docks or tree limbs. The only thing that I am uncomfortable with is the fact that you are wedging that round bar stock into a wedge cavity. I think you are only inviting a split in the upper gunnel. How about mounting the system to the inner gunnel just internal to the storage cavity. It has a nice flat area 1/2 inch lower to the outer edge that you are using. There should be no splitting forces to the kayak. Just a thought. Hope this holds up in the long term for you. Each rock and bump is like taking a hammer to the wheel leg. Looking forward to the next video

    • @SouthernReelsFishing
      @SouthernReelsFishing  5 лет назад

      Great point about the mounting issue. I did not tighten the mounting bolts very much, and I used blue threadlocker to keep them from working loose. I tightened the bolt until I saw it just starting to spread the plastic slighty and then stopped. The hull is very thick there and I feel it will hold up just fine. I guess time will tell

    • @SilverShadow2LWB
      @SilverShadow2LWB 5 лет назад

      I am hoping it works out well for you. If you get a fracture, I think that Hobie will not honor the warranty after mounting this wheel set-up. At least that's the last that I have heard. I am thinking about having a stainless steel plate cut out for the flat area just 3.5 inches inside of the current location, and having it tapped for threads. If you are into engineering, it's a bad combination with a round stock fitted to a wedge shaped cavity. You may have better luck with smooth asphalt driveways, but here at the ocean, the wheels have a tougher time on sand and smaller rocks. Exiting the surf also is tougher on the kayak because of the wave action. It wouldn't be so bad if the kayak were covered under warranty or if it were cheaper. Good luck.

    • @roofer4kidz913
      @roofer4kidz913 5 лет назад

      Boonedox has an option to mount on the flat area as an alternative to the narrower gunnel install. By ordering the standard kit you’ll get the necessary hardware and reinforcement plate to do the install. I just order it for my 2019 outback.

    I had the same issue with the backer rods not being correctly tapped. Ended up stripping a hex bolt on one side. Frustrated and pressed for time I left one side secured with only one bolt. Worked fine until I took the outback over a rocky terrain. Ended up bending the aluminum mount on the side that was poorly fastened. Boonedox doesn’t sell individual parts so had to order new landing gear without the tires. It’s a great product but a definite quality control issue with that specific part.

    The product is good, although it's extremely difficult to install. The problem is that the people at this company are AWFUL to customers. I ordered a small box of bolts and knuckle hardware from them. The first problem was that they charged $43 to ship a small box from North Carolina to my house in CT. That's absurd. The next issue is that when I needed to return a couple of the parts, my email to customer service was ignored for a week. When they finally did reply, this is what I was told:
    "To be honest I would try to sell what you do not need because I am going to explain our return policy. You send back the parts that you do not need and once they arrive we inspect them; upon inspection we issue a refund of the product price minus a $25.00 restocking fee"
    So yeah - good product, but terrible to install, and the company doesn't seem to care about the customers. I'd buy something else if I could do it all again.
