If you ever do see this sir, just know your videos have helped me a ton over my few years of boat ownership. You're doing God's work helping those of us who can't afford to go to a shop
I love how this chap just gets to the point of how to fix the problem. With a lot of videos I get tired of hearing about what they had for supper and what their children are doing.
My husband is having this exact same problem . He hit a unseen stump leaving the boat launch, at a very low speed. We thought that he was going to have to get into the gearbox and change out expensive parts. I am so thankful that you share expertise with us. I checked my prop and sure enough the thrust bushing is worn out. The rubber is gone. Thank you so much for the info and for saving me hundreds if not thousands of dollars. Our 1978 Evinrude 115 hp will be cutting through the water at top speed in no time.
My friend I want to say thank you for this video. I have a 120hp Johnson. I bought a prop from eBay for it over the winter, (as mine was kinda beat up). My first ride was great, second ride it started revving and slowing down. I though my gears were going. Your video saved me ALOT of work!! I put the old prop back on and it ran like a champ. I was out in a buddy's little 16 foot Boston Whaler with a 92 15hp Johnson on the back experiencing exactly those symptoms. Runs great in the driveway but no guts on the water. Tomorrow the prop comes off for an inspection of that bushing, which I suspected might have been the problem to begin with. Thanks as always Stu for the great informative videos.
@@craigbielsky115 Thats exactly my issue at the moment. Motor revs to full revs with no resistance but wont get past 2 grand in the water and I'm just staring at the sky. Any update on what the issue was? Thanks
I am not in the habit of commenting any videos but I had to make an exception here- this video solved my problem 100%. I was out on a Lake in Finland when my prop ever so slightly scraped some rock- nothing major, didn't think much of it. But then I had exactly the problem with high revs and going nowhere afterwards.I was afraid that the gear box was damaged but simply changing the prop as Stu suggested did the trick. I also changed to a larger pitch and suddenly my boat moves easier with high load- I just love these videos and the fact that Stu helped me from the other side of the planet. Keep up the great work! Cheers, Kristian from Finland.
Just bought a boat and quickly found this issue with my Johnson 90. Dropped the boat in the water for the first time and was able to rev it all the way up and had it go nowhere. My bushing was all mushy when I took it out. Thanks for the advice as always.
I know how to do all of this. But I like watching your videos to learn something new or a short cut. Keep the videos coming. You have the best boat videos on youtube
great R&R video! All outboard users should carry a spare prop (all boaters actually), and the tools to change it! Can't say how many times that has saved my weekend!
Thanks, just too good to believe, I never even knew that the bushing was even there to protect the gear box from further damage. I feel I had hit the prop sometime, and so I had lost power due to slippage. I better change my prop on my Yamaha 90 hp 2 stroke. Thanks once again, and a big Hello from Goa, India. Thank you for great videos. I think you just solved a problem. My outboard on my sailboat seems to be losing power. The engine revs just fine, but she don't go like she used too. Sooo. Tomorrow I will pull the motor and check the prop. and clean the plugs. and air filter.
This sounds exactly like what happened to me yesterday out on the water. It kept revving up with no acceleration when trying to go faster, but I was able to make it back at a low speed, Thanks for the video!

Enjoy watching your videos, you do a great job explaining what it is you are doing. This happened to my boat as i was approaching the dock last time I was out. My heart sank $$$$, I will be pulling the prop now! Thanks!
Thanks for this video. My outboard did this today. Couldn’t think what it could be. Was expecting the worse being having to replace the gearbox. I’ll be very happy if I get out of it for just the cost of a new prop.
I was out for a first test of a newly rebuilt 1968 evinrude 9.5hp yesterday and it spun the hub, it failed after I put into reverse. I had a spare so no big deal, but I thought about this video and it was a quick diagnosis. Its a good runner after a bit of work and very few dollars. I got 3 and half 9.5hp for $150 so I'll have spare parts for a life time.
When I was out the other day, I had these exact symptoms. Boat would move at low RPM but as soon as I would give it throttle, it would over-rev and we wouldn't move. This is the first thing I thought of. Thankfully I remembered your very first advice here to check for a prop or lower unit obstruction. That was it! Big old mass of lake weed on the front of the skeg. Put it in reverse and backed out of it. Problem solved. :P

Thank you, I just took my used boat out for the first time today . It was my very first time out and after about 15 minutes this happened to me I lost acceleration and it would only go forward slowly. I was scared it was a serious issue. Great video - thanks for taking the time to make it. I've got an Evinrude 15hp and had my first hub slip... Watching the video helps take away the fear that I'm going to mess things up - and especially liked the emergency fix. Subscribed to your page and looking for more excellent boating videos. Thanks!
It isn't 'fixed.' It's jury-rigged. Don't run the boat with the prop like that longer than necessary; replace the prop or have a 'proper' replacement hub pressed in.
Excellent content on your videos I'm gonna try this on my boat I'm having the same issue ohh dough not sure it will be the prop bcuz it started after I service the motor mine will go fast but takes to long
Thought I heard a strange sound from my outboard followed by the boat losing forward momentum. The boats been much slower than normal, even at full throttle, and it's had me baffled for over a week. Going to check the prop in the morning. Thanks for the tip.
Another great video Stu! Thanks, had this exact same thing happen to me on the weekend, of course it decided to go while I was in the shipping lane coming back, thankfully the freighter had already passed through :) Learning a ton from your videos. Many thanks again!
Vry incredible tip to drill holes on either side of prop to secure it by placing & tightening by common hardware screws temporary fix until u manage to get a new prop
thanks, great video my wife and I just had this happen thought it was something really bad makes me feel better we could only idle around out on the Mississippi river.
Great video, I have just had this happen on my Mercury 15HP motor on our tender. I now greatly suspect that the rubber on the spline has done this having watched your video as these are the exact same symptons. I will now give the repair a go myself and just replace the prop but also do the dodgy fix just in case of an emergency and have a spare available.
Picked up a boat this past week , finally got out today with it . Brought the wife and kids , we were all excited .. planned on fishing and going waterskiing for the first time in about 15 years. Started up fine , got out of the no wake zone and hammered it down thinking I'd impress the kids..well , that didn't happen .Instead all it did was rev up really high. We were all happy to just be out on the lake so we just cruised around slow and just went swimming..I had an extra prop with me but no tools..Oh well at least I know what the problem is..
Good to buy spare prop and have in boat just like having a spare tire for your vehicle. If possible, paddle boat to shoreline and work on in shallow water just in case you drop something. May pickup extra nut, nut wire clip. Great videos as usual.
Sorry if this is a repeat I didn't read all the comments. Happened to me years ago too. As an emergency fix pull the prop and insert screws into the rubber parallel to the inner hub. The extra pressure kept the hub from spinning not only long enough to get home but for a couple more trips.
I made a temporary repair by putting 3 screws directly into the rubber bushing from the rear of the prop. NOT through any metal. I think the screws expand the rubber enough to give some bite. 4 years later, it's still working. I tried it on another spun prop but it didn't work.
Rookie here , great propeller repair . This is what happened to me this weekend , ???? please ,can I stop the grinding when changing from F to R , Thanks Mike CB Canada
Learning a lot from your videos, I just subscribed today but I've been watching and taking some notes. Im 19 and I inherited an old skiff with a 25 hp Yamaha 4-stroke and I've been teaching myself the maintenance for it. Learning a lot all the way over here in Florida:)
Hi you post very nice and useful video how to maintain outboard motor. i like boating and i like fixing outboard motors. But now we have winter time here in East Europe I had in my hands mosty all of small motors( up to 20 hp). Best to You

Thanks a lot for this. My boat lost traction at a time when I really needed it and it was a scary moment, made worse by not knowing what had caused the issue. Pity there is nothing about this in the troubleshooting section of the manual (Suzuki DF5).
I have been fishing for years, but none of my buddies with years of boat experience as well knew what the problem was. so easy but the bushing is so critical - who knew.
Good afternoon All, I have the same issue, boat idles fine. In FULL throttle she goes slow. There's a sweet spot on my Throttle but dosnt go any faster than 1100-1300 rpms. Engine has good compression on all cylinders. Reading about 140 for each. The first thing I changed was the Prop. It was the one with the rubber on both ends so I bought a nice one thats solid metal. Also changed the gear fluid while I was at it..... I changed so many things on this 1979 Evinrude 85hp engine. Started with the spark plugs, boots and wires, coils, battery packs on both sides, solenoid for the starter, the starter, primer pump and all full lines including adding a new filter. I also rebuilt the carbs and had them cleaned in some hydroelectric cleaner that really shocks the life out of you cause i touched the water.... started using high quality gas and i've added SeaFoam to the tank to better the fuel. Still do not know what the heck is going on?!?!?! Thanks for this video, we all have a common ground! -Nic
Hey Nic. If it really isn't revving above 1300 I would check that the throttle plates are opening the whole way. Many boats have a mechanism to stop them revving in neutral, maybe that mechanisms isn't coming off even in gear.
Do you have a video for that? And I watch your videos all the time. You always bring that educational, entertaining, friendly and inviting, functional and innovative experience. I was super excited when I saw your reply.
Great video, I don't understand it to much but it seams just like my problem, so I will get a new prop. It's only a 9.9 2001 merc. So it shouldn't that expensive.
This is quite an interesting video indeed! I have been running my twin Honda 130 HP outboards and I have lost a significant amount of speed. I give full throttle but I was getting about under 3,000 RPM! I was wondering what was the problem so I tried changing the oil as the Honda manual prescribed. This video makes a lot of sense but I'm praying that it's not the bushings in the propellers LOL... Awesome video Stu!
+elspaniard002 Thanks mate. If you aren't getting above 3000RPM then it is unlikely to be the bushing as when they slip the engine can rev quite freely, a bit like a car sitting on an icy road - the revs are high but the speed is low. Sounds more like you are a down a cylinder or something. Have you checked/ changed the spark plugs recently?
Thanks for your reply Stu and much appreciated. I have changed the plugs but I still had the same problem. What I heard someone saying that maybe the mechanic changed the timing of the outboards. Could this change affect my performance on the water?
What year model outboards are they. If they are Honda 130s I'm thinking they aren't very old and will have computer controlled timing that can't be adjusted.
+Dangar Marine . Thank you very much for the information. I haven't been to my boat as yet but I will certainly have those suggestions in mind when I get to my boat. I remember you had a previous video on when a boat not wanting to start and I listened intently to every word. As for compression I do not have a tester. I checked the fuel and drained the vapour separator as well. Checked for sparks and I got them. Also I sent the starter motor to the repair shop but just not turning over. I realized that my battery cables are corroded so the motors are not getting sufficient current to start. I am going to replace them and attempt turning over the engines again. Thank you so much for the information; I've always wanted to know more about outboard motors and you have been of great help!
elspaniard002 Thanks, I'm glad the videos have been helping you. Yes, corroded battery leads are a very common problem out on the water. Let me know how you get on. :)
I bought a brand new prop that came with the bushing bad, or installed incorrectly. Unfortunately its too late to exchange it by the time I figured out it was bad and I don't want to buy ANOTHER new prop...I'm gonna use that "bodger way" to get by. I'm lucky if I get the boat out more than 1-2 times a year anyway!
+Dangar Marine Thanks for the feedback. It idles a little bit low but not too bad. When I got back to the boat ramp (thanks to a lovely couple who gave us a tow) I was flushing the motor and it went into gear fine without stalling. I have since tried putting it in gear and turning the prop by hand and it spins clockwise with a slight clicking sound every half rotation. It doesn't spin anti clockwise when in gear or either direction when it's in reverse. When in neutral it spins and feels smooth. I took the lower unit off recently so maybe I haven't connected it up properly. It's an old Suzuki dt85 1982 model and they can be tricky to get back together.
You mentioned the shear-pin set-up ... One day, many years ago, we were fishing about 15 miles off the coast of Florida. When my dad put the motor in gear to move to a new place, the 100hp Evinrude just revved. He quickly cut it, and we looked over the transom just in time to see the prop fall off! Fortunately, we were in about 10 feet (3 meters?) of water, so I could swim down to get it. And also fortunate that he always carried an extra shear pin on the boat.
It was late '60s so I may have that detail wrong. I know we had the Evinrude around the same time frame. But I vividly remember the words my dad used as it fell.
HI thanks for the videos. I have a 1979 Johnson 25 HP that has new carb kit and spark plugs. The motor runs great in a barrel I can rev the motor in gear but when on the water it will not accelerate past low rpms about 10 mph. It does not sputter or die just does not reach full speed. It can drive slow around the mooring field all day without problems. The same used to run great but it sat for a while before I got it. I pumped the primer bulb while running no change. There is a shock in the throttle handle sometimes on the water that I cannot feel in the barrel. Please help I'm at wits end
I would start with the basics. Check the compression, check the timing is advancing properly, check the throttle butterfly valves are opening fully etc.
My 77 evinrude was doing the same thing. Wish I found this video before I took apart my whole lower unit. Better late than never. Thanks for the advice.
Brilliant video! Thank you for the very clear information on what this issue is and what to do to fix it. Also, thank you for the last resort option to use in a pinch. Very handy!
Hey Stu, love the videos. Quick question - I am re fitting the prop assembly on my 2006 Yamaha 15hp 2-stroke, and of course did not pay attention to the orientation of the thrust washer when I took it off. Is it true that the bevel or taper in the washer should match the bevel on the prop shaft? Any advice would be appreciated, Cheers.
Thanks a lot vor this video, just had this issue last night and trying to replace the prop myself, my question is: my boat is in the water and my trailer is being serviced at this moment, would be ok to remove and replace the prop while submerged in the water?
HI danger, thanks i will start with the compression test on each cylinder. I will change all 4 of the plugs , since I will be in there....I have never change plugs since I got the motor....might be a good idea.
Also be sure to keep the plugs in order (know which cylinder they came from when you take them out) and take a look at each one. See if anyone looks more fouled or corroded than any of the others.
I have same problem on my 1989 beyliner Capri 1770 inboard motor start and runs will not acelérate past safety mode or currently limp mode. Do you think it could be same problem ? Please help. Thank you
Hello. I'm Alex. I have been watching your videos for a while and l appreciate very much your sharing of knowledge. I wanted to ask you if would possibly share some light on an issue l'm having with my 2006, remote control, 20hp yamaha. I purchased the motor used. The issue l'm having is that as soon as l put the gear forward (or reverse) it just takes off very fast. It is extremely difficult to load it back up on the trailer because it will just not go slow. Any help or advice would be very appreciated. Thank you very much. Alex.
Hello. I'm from Europe. I found a boat motor here. Mercuri classik midcentury 45 HP. I would be interested in your opinion, is it still worth buying, are there any spare parts, eye rings? How is their consumption developing? Thanks if vant helping me.
here's a question for you. Is it worth to fix/rebuild lower unit for an old 1997 50hp Johnson? Rebuild would cost few hundred bucks (that is if i have tools) and lot of time or spending $2100 for another LU?

Thanks for the video my 50 hp has been doing this I thought it was something difficult to fix I will get me a new prop for it
Right????
Lordy how simple was that? Glad I didn't tear into my lower unit..
Happy Boating!!
Great video - thanks for taking the time to make it. I've got an Evinrude 15hp and had my first hub slip... Watching the video helps take away the fear that I'm going to mess things up - and especially liked the emergency fix. Subscribed to your page and looking for more excellent boating videos. Thanks!
Thanks Brent, glad the video helped you. :)
I did the same thing....on my Johnson 40hp 1972...it runs well!!!
Wow, I just ran into this issue this weekend. I've been racking my brain trying to figure it out and failed to consider the simplest issue. Thanks.
It is an odd one if you aren't familiar with it, and relatively common too.
Not much experience with boats eh? It shows.
@@871jamie We all start somewhere.
Great tips Stu. Never knew you could even fix a prop with a spun hub. Great info to know and have. Thanks!
Thanks mate. It's a good technique to file away in the back of your mind should you ever need it.
It isn't 'fixed.' It's jury-rigged. Don't run the boat with the prop like that longer than necessary; replace the prop or have a 'proper' replacement hub pressed in.
omg this same issue just happened to me Saturday exactly like he said felt like clutch slip
hope this is my fix !
It is quite a common problem. Fingers crossed for you. :)
Excellent content on your videos I'm gonna try this on my boat I'm having the same issue ohh dough not sure it will be the prop bcuz it started after I service the motor mine will go fast but takes to long
Dude thank you so so much. I thought it was something in my gearbox causing the issue. You just saved me atleast 100$ probably more. Thanks
Super informative content. And not to intimidating to tackle myself. I never knew this about the prop bushing. Great job.
Thanks Steve, it is a common problem that's for sure.
Vry incredible tip to drill holes on either side of prop to secure it by placing & tightening by common hardware screws temporary fix until u manage to get a new prop
A '74 Johnson 50 doing just that. Thanks for the video, not near as terrified now! A good Easter weekend project now.
+R. R. You're welcome, fortunately this one isn't a serious problem. :)
thanks, great video my wife and I just had this happen thought it was something really bad makes me feel better we could only idle around out on the Mississippi river.
A new prop should see you back in action in no time. :)
I truly hope you know how valuable your advice and knowledge is man. top form
This is my second or third video I have watched from you and they are great!!
Thanks Stu,
Really helped me out of a lot of money that I thought I was going to spend.
You’re welcome, glad it helped.
Your video's are very good.Straight to the point and well presented. Thanks for posting!
+shaun mcinnis Thanks Shaun, glad you like them. :)
Ah well, at least it is an easy fix. :)
I will be trying this on my outboard as a test to see if it is thst then replace the relevent parts if it is the same problem, thanks.
Great video, clever fix.. if any of you spend enough time on a boat, you may consider having a spare prop.. cheers!
Another good approach for sure.
I have had several different couplings replaced over the years without any vibration issues.
Mate, another great video, clear & concise with no BS. Keep up the good work!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and advice. Another great intuitive video.
Learning a lot from your videos, I just subscribed today but I've been watching and taking some notes. Im 19 and I inherited an old skiff with a 25 hp Yamaha 4-stroke and I've been teaching myself the maintenance for it. Learning a lot all the way over here in Florida:)
Hi Greg. Glad the videos are helping. Good luck with your new boat! :)
Hi you post very nice and useful video how to maintain outboard motor.
i like boating and i like fixing outboard motors. But now we have winter time here in East Europe
I had in my hands mosty all of small motors( up to 20 hp).
Best to You
+Evin Fan Thanks Evin, glad the videos help you. It's interesting, I was looking at what percentage of the worlds population live in the northern hemisphere and are having winter right now and apparently it is 88%! I'm expecting views to increase by July. ;) Take care, Stuart
368k views and only 2.2k likes SMH, less than 1% could be bothered hitting the like.
Thanks Stu, this vid along with all the others are gold for me.
Blessings mate.
Thanks mate, appreciate your support!
yep great exactly my prob! caught prop in a reversing with motor down accident then on a rock!
id be sure this is my problem! thank you!
Thanks a lot for this. My boat lost traction at a time when I really needed it and it was a scary moment, made worse by not knowing what had caused the issue. Pity there is nothing about this in the troubleshooting section of the manual (Suzuki DF5).
I have been fishing for years, but none of my buddies with years of boat experience as well knew what the problem was. so easy but the bushing is so critical - who knew.
yeah that's what mine does, when you take off it drops down and the motor is still wound out. so i think i will change my prop.
Derek Perkins the prop is probably fine,it's just spun on the inside. Much cheaper than a new prop
Good afternoon All,
I have the same issue, boat idles fine.
So it shouldn't that expensive.
a lot of helpful info here and straight to the point too, thanks!
Glad it helped. :)
+Greg Hi Greg, the clicking is normal. Have you made any progress with it?
You mentioned the shear-pin set-up ...
One day, many years ago, we were fishing about 15 miles off the coast of Florida. When my dad put the motor in gear to move to a new place, the 100hp Evinrude just revved. He quickly cut it, and we looked over the transom just in time to see the prop fall off! Fortunately, we were in about 10 feet (3 meters?) of water, so I could swim down to get it. And also fortunate that he always carried an extra shear pin on the boat.
That's the important thing, being able to get your prop back too. Lucky it was shallow water!
It was late '60s so I may have that detail wrong. I know we had the Evinrude around the same time frame. But I vividly remember the words my dad used as it fell.
Thank you so much for this video. Helped me out a lot!!
Your videos are very helpful.
Great to here.
awsom videos I'm new to boating and learning heaps .way over here in newzealand
+Craig Edwards Hey Craig, glad the videos are helping you. Always great to hear from a near neighbour. ;)
Thank you for the replY! The compression is fine but its a 2 cylinder and one plug was black and one was clean? Any diagnosis from that?
Thank you very much for this video and the quality. It helped me out a lot!
Thank you, you've saved me from having an expensive long wait at the repair shop!
Good news! :)
My 77 evinrude was doing the same thing. Wish I found this video before I took apart my whole lower unit. Better late than never. Thanks for the advice.
Oh well, as you say, at least you will be in the know for next time. :)
Brilliant video! Thank you for the very clear information on what this issue is and what to do to fix it. Also, thank you for the last resort option to use in a pinch. Very handy!
You're welcome mate, glad it helped you. :)
Thank you sir!! Excellent explanation and vid. solved my problem, thank you again.
Thanks for the video. I think this is what's going on with my boat.
Thanks! Very instructive. Exactly the information I needed.
You are amazing talent man .
Great video, I watched 20 miles out in Gulf of Mexico. Took 6 hours to get back at idle 👍 But at least I made it back 👌👌👌👌
Great video mate. Keep them coming
Thanks Samo!
How important is it to replace with the same size prop? Mine has been discontinued.
Great fix to get home.... or in our case, from our remotr off grid home back to town
here's a question for you. Is it worth to fix/rebuild lower unit for an old 1997 50hp Johnson? Rebuild would cost few hundred bucks (that is if i have tools) and lot of time or spending $2100 for another LU?
Hi, help!
1995 Mariner EFI, revs but no speed increase, prop bushing ok. In forward gear, prop turns fairly easily, reverse, prop does not turn. What to do please?
Great video, quick question does the thrust washer have seals? Thanks
