I heard it on a twin engine boat I was thinking about buying. One of the engines behaved and sounded exactly like the engine in this video. The owner disclosed this at the time I looked at the boat. He had it looked at, but was never able to get the chatter to go away. He did tell me that it didn't seem to hurt the engine at all and the chatter did go away as the RPM's were increased. Not knowing what this was I passed on an otherwise very nice boat that was very well maintained.
My F225 does this. Always feared the worst but it always gets me home! Will look into a new SDS hub kit! Thanks!!
Never herd of such a thing in my 35+ years on the water. Shift klunk yes. When going from neutral to forward or neutral to reverse at idle. But that is expected.
I had this on my 2011 Yamaha 150. I had a stainless 3 blade prop. I just lives with it once i found out what it was.
It is caused by torsional vibration of the engine. Because an engine has intermittent power strokes as he engine turns a torsional vibration is produced. This vibration is a rotating vector perpendicular to the axis of rotation. A car engine with a manual clutch has a torsional damper built into the clutch disk. The clutch disk usually employs springs or rubber dampers to reduce this torsional vibration. In an out board engine like these there is no clutch (like a car) and the torsional vibration is essentially controlled only by the balance and selection of the entire drive train component's characteristics. Adding a rubber damper at the prop shaft to blade interface results in a dampening of this rotational vibration. It is really like the clutch disk dampers but at the other end of the drive train. Good video! btw - ever notice an automatic car transmission does not have a torsional damper attached to the flywheel? Instead the torsional vibration is absorbed by the fluid in the torque converter...pretty smart these engineers!
I had a Jetta TDI and had to change the clutch. The OEM was a dual mass flywheel that seems to be somewhat prone to failures so I put on a Single mass. Big mistake... Has this "clutch chatter" that drive me nuts I had to trade it in.
Had this on a new mercury 115 4 stroke repower. Dealer put on a "very" large stainless prop (15.6x19). Fixed the issue by going to a smaller aluminum prop (14x19) and flow-torq ssr hub. Thanks for the video. At first I thought there was a major issue with the motor, now all good!
Thanks for a good, informative video. The worst prop chatter I have run into is with my brother-in-law's MerCruiser 1.8L 4-cyl turbodiesel on an Alpha I drive. It chatters loudly at idle with an aluminum prop (pressed hub Quicksilver or Solas), and we've been afraid to try a stainless prop on it for fear of beating it up. My Suzuki DF115 will chatter occasionally with a stainless prop, but not as badly as that MerCruiser diesel.
I ve owned two boats with 4 stroke outboards. A suzuki 140, and another with a Yamaha 90. Both had V style powerheads. I ve never experienced any continuous prop noise or heard any others. All outboards when shifting make a grinding when shifting into forward or reverse. I ve always done so quickly instead of slowly draging this out.
Once after taking my Yamaha powered boat to Lake Wylie while drifting in white capped water with engine off but trim left down approching shallow water I felt a sudden bump from the motor striking something hard on a downward motion from a wave or wake. Instantly I trimed motor up to prevent hitting again. I m not used to operating in waters that have rocks or rocky bottoms. Later we left to return to ramp noticing no probs or sounds. After loading and moving to an out of way spot to get boats ready for hauling back home I always go around checking , and this time I wiggled prop and it had a good amount of loose slop. I got a sickly feeling thinking this isn t good and dollar signs ca chinging in my eyes wondering how expensive the repair bill would be and how long my boat would be out of service.
On way back home (I live near the coast) I remebered that bump
The next morning home, I took prob retaining nut off,removed prob and that plastic sleeve and metal slide insert were still on prop shaft. I thought it worked like a clutch replacing shear pin older style props. I reinserted them , put back on shaft and replaced prop. This time when retaining nut was retightened the prop had normal slight loosness. I ved on a lake then so pulled boat the short distance to ramp. I slowly idled out and added gas making sure no sounds or vibrations appeared. Everything went fine and I ve had no issues. If anyone has had any kind of prop chatter or experiences like mine I would appreciate a reply.

I have been boating for 60 years and never heard of this, although I do hear a loud "ker-chunk" when engaging forward or reverse from the neutral position.
Before I changed the prop from a 3 blade aluminum to a 4 blade stainless steel prop on my 150 Merc, I read about prop chatter and bought the appropriate hub suggested by Mercury. It still chatters when in gear and idling and goes away as the speed is increased. With the former aluminum prop, there was no chatter at all.
I have some prop chatter on my 250 SHO. Started when I swapped from a powertech prop to a Mercury Tempest. The performance gain is worth the little noise in my opinion. The powertech prop blew out with very little effort. Haven't blown the Tempest out once yet.
I’ve got twin 2003 Suzuki 140s of a 28’ performer. These 2 motors are AWSOME!!!....BUT, prop chatter is nuts. The motors sound and feel good but all of that vibration is felt in the boat making things like all the glass rattle and fish box doors. Anything under 2k it makes lots of noise. Or especially if the 2 motors aren’t matched in RPMs. I wish there was a way to get rid of it. But your explanation was spot on. 🤘😎🤘
Thanks for bringing that up I bump my throttle and it goes away. My big problem is grinding into gear I think maybe the cables are missadjusted.

I did buy a 30 horsepower yamaha about a year ago. There was a rattle from day one. Got worse after 70 ours. At 140 ours Yamaha did a repair on the bottom end. Soon our boat wil be in the water , have to experience if the repair solved the problem .
Just changed my prop out for a lesser pitch on my Mercury 150 four stroke. Put it in gear and chattered like a mofo at idle. I had used a new standard hub when I installed the new prop. I then pulled the hub out of the old prop and found it to be the SSR. Put that in the new prop and chatter completely gone. I don't know how exactly they work but they do.
Yep. My Yamaha 200 started doing it after its water pump change. Dealer said they all do it after that and basically deal with it.

Oh that's what that noise is. I thought the zinc anode just above the cavitation plate was making the noise because it is loose.

I have twin F200 Yamaha on my Grady, I have prop chatter on the starboard engine not on the port,Counter rotating. I’ve just learned to live with it hopefully there is nothing detrimental down the line.
I have a 2 year old Yamaha F130 with 100hrs on. I swapped the SS Yamaha 18” 13 ⅛ 3 blade for a SS Turning Point 17” 13 ¼ 4 blade. The prop chatter can be significant at idle rpm in gear now. I used the TP dampener too. Once under way the chatter disappears. Hole shot performance vastly improved for pulling a mono skier out of the water which is why I purchased the 4 blade.
Just learned something new. My honda 115 does it and i never really thought of it. Thought it was normal due to the gear shift.
I've got a similar sound on one of my two inboards with straight shafts. It disappears as soon as I rev up a little so I guess it also has to do with some play in the gear.

Twin Yam 115's here...only chatter I hear is when I don't move them into gear fast enough. Never have chatter in gear at idle luckily.
I don't know enough about what it should sound like to be scared. My old Johnson sounds like that at idle or 1st notch above. Sometimes though, it will smooth right out, revs go down, speed goes up. Then it will die. Bbut, revved to 4500 and planing along at 25, everything sounds pretty sweet.
I have a Honda 150 and I am currently having this problem. I have used different hubs, some better than others, but I am going to try next the Flo Torq IV.
After this, if I still have some chatter I will looking at a way to lighten the prop.
Never heard of this condition in fifty years of boating - learning something new all the time on this channel. Our 90 Yamaha inline 4 has the factory aluminum prop so perhaps this is preventing the noise.
It's more than likely due to oscillation. A 4 stroke engine does not rotate smoothly at low rpms. It takes a sensitive instrument to see the fluctuations in speed. It happens in some engines more than others due to the rotating mass. Even a large truck diesel engine has this problem if the idle speed is set too low. I have seen low idle speed literally beat the transmission gears to the point where they had to be replaced. Once the idle speed is increased a couple hundred rpm, the condition goes away.

Hi, I think my engine may have this. 2007 Yamaha 225 4 stroke 3.3L V6.
When I put it into gear, get the typical biting sound, but then it seems to chatter.
Is this likely, even with a V6?

I have heard that noise before and never knew what it was.
I was once told at the Miami Boat show by the Yamaha folks that a dampening system will be a good choice to my 150. When looking that up i quickly steered away due to cost $$$. I am not sure if there are places when they sell them at a discount or used.
have it with my RIB (Bombard 600db) and an F-150 hp Yamaha, but only in low idle in forward gear. And: only with stainless steel prop, never had it with aluminium props. So basically exactly how it´s said in the video.
I have this problem. I have a mercury 25 hp 4-stroke. It's year is 06 and I have a solas Saturn stainless steel. Is there anything I can do to eliminate the noise? It doesn't have a removable hub.
My 2017 yamaha 115 4 stroke prop nut is tight but im still able to push in and out on prop a inch or so,,is this normal,,i up graded to ss prop from aluminum last year and haven had a issue,,,i had boat out today cleaning it and when i was flushing lower unit i noticed the extra play...IS THIS NORMAL or do i need a spacer

I have a 2018 Merc ProXS 115 CT and noticed there is 2-3mm of play in the prop (I can wiggle it). Is this normal?
I get this every now and again on my 99 Yamaha 150 OX66. I though it was some type of cavitation. Good info!

I have a 2017 60 hp Command Thrust Mercury 4 Stoke. I put a Vengeance S/S prop on with a Flo-Torque 2 and a with a Flo-Torque 3 and it rattles a lot. Don't spend money on a different hub, it still rattles bad. I just put my Black Max Aluminum 3 Blade back on. I will try that and I hope the noise goes away.
Same reason a 4 cyl Cummings will shake your teeth out and a 6 cylinder won't , I've always heard that if you can divide the number of cylinders by 3 it won't shake as bad because the pistons are 120 degrees apart instead of 90 degrees and the more cylinders there are the less vibration
First time I have ever heard of that prop chatter but I’m an 2 stroke guy .I don’t know anything about 4 stroke other than it’s a brand new lawnmower with a leg and prop

Replaced 17 pitch with 15 on My 2013 Merc 150 four stroke and it sounded like a baseball card on bicycle spokes at idle forward and reverse.. Put 17 pitch prop back on and noise disappeared. Due to performance issues had to use 15. Noise returned but engine performed better. 17 pitch prop was quicksilver, 15 is solas. Gues it doesn't matter what make.
Is the play @ 4:43 something to worry about, or is it normal? My Alpha one gen2 has the same.
I’ve seen this “prop chatter” on the 4 cylinder yamahas caused by not pushing the impeller down while pulling up on the driveshaft while servicing the water pump. This causes the driveshaft to move up and down and creating that noise.
Interesting, thinking of it now mine started after a water pump service. Was perfectly fine before that. I have also put on a different lower unit to rule out a bad lower. The noise did go away but I didn't have the propeller on. Added the propeller and noise came right back. Super aggravating for sure. Mine is a 2002 Yamaha Z200TXRA HPDI
I’m having this same issue. My drive shaft doesn’t move when I pull up on it though. Any suggestions? I’ve adjusted the linkage and got “chatter” to stop, but it’s putting a lot of pressure on the plastic arm. I definitely think what you’re saying is my issue. Any advice would be appreciated
I was thinking a balancer issue?? Manufacturers have been known to "just put the part on and get it out the door".. hence recalls...
Yeah my 2018 merc 150 4stroke has proper chatter right out of the box at idle in gear, once you bump it up a couple hundred rpm it goes away but still annoying
Same here, my merc 150 with the Flow Torq II does this. 900-1000 RPM it quits

I’m dealing with this now! I just went from an aluminum prop to stainless and now the stainless is giving me prop chatter at idle. It is an inline four cylinder too 🤣. I’ve tried a few different hub kits but I haven’t been able to eliminate the issue yet. I don’t want to go back to the aluminum because of the performance I’ve gained.
Amy luck so far with your prop chatter? I own a 2018 Mercury 115 4 stroke with a stainless steel prop 14.0” with a 19 pitch. The chatter started 2 weeks ago only when in gear. At idle, it won’t chatter unless you push or put pressure on the prop pushing it forward (on the trailer) just replaced the hub along with a new prop sleeve and the chatter still remains when pressure is applied against the prop at idle.

This sounds like excessive play in drive shaft and gear end play.
Once a load is placed on gears the force moves gears into a "loaded" position which removes the excessive play.
Example bushings worn and being able to push and pull prop into hub.
Like you had been showing in the video.
Like u joint play will have different harmonic vibration at different speeds and under different loads Like the propeller loads .
Just my take, I would think pulling apart the lower end would show end play wear and be close to manufactures replacement tolerances.
The problem is gear wear can be shimmed only so far before full replacement which equals $$$.
Just my take from 30 plus years in aviation with different types of drive units and 20 yrs in owning small engine repair.
It's all related if it's mechanical, floats, flies or drives.
I have an alpha one gen2, and has the same play on the propshaft (moving back and forth) as in the video, @ 4:43 is that something to worry about?
@@daytonasunset There are end play limits from the manufacture, this will give you a idea of what is allowed or not. You get play in everything, because it moves, but your allowed limits and excessive basically means you have "eaten up" the material of , say shims, bearings etc.. Cheaper to change a shim than the lower unit.

Does this apply to 2 stroke as well, i have the same knocking going on with my 115 Yamaha.
I did switch to stainless from aluminum as well. The first time i took it out after it made so much racket, like in the video i was scared to take it out. The thing is it didn't do it when i tried it out at the house, sounded fine, but when we put the boat in the water it started.
Put it back on the trailer, and crank it to again put it in gear and it was still doing it..

We just changed the prop on my dads boat because the other one was dented badly. Now we have the rattling/weird sound. Whats the best way to fix it? Is it a hub kit issue? Cuz its the exact same prop just a new one
Been running twin 2-stroke 200 yamahas for nearly a decade with prop chatter. It is annoying but goes away when you nudge the throttle. Nothing to worry about.
I get it on both my Yamaha 150s only when shifting into gear and out of gear so you have to shoot through Don't Dilly dally
I think I am just experiencing it. Slowing down from running speed I got huge amount of noise from the engine which stopped once slowed down. I chose to take it easy the next time out just running the boat to 2000 rpm and no problem I need to get out to try it again.
Prop chatter shakes the out put shaft, that's going to eventually make a main bearing shake away from the crank and over time starve the bearing of oil from the vibration
That's what I'm guessing cus that's what happened to my friends fishing boat
I have never had an issue till I just changed my water pump everything went back together easily which I had off about four time because when I started engine and put in gear had this knocking noise does not do it n neutral but fwd and rvs both have a knocking noise not sure if goes away afraid to drive it since it was not doing this before if I take my prop off it does not do it either

Because 4 cylinder in-lines are inherently unbalanced. Couldn't tell you if these motors have a balance shaft like some automotive engines, probably not since it takes up a lot of room inside the motor. The harmonic balancer is just for: harmonics. Much smaller vibrations than engine balance issues. Many engines have balance shafts, like a Ford's 6.8 V10, or an old eclipse 2.0 4cyl. Inline 6 and v12's are inherently balanced and do not need balance shafts.
never experienced prop chatter...i run a mercury 4 stroke motor....new version (2019)

This same noise my Johnson outboard started doing,It’s a 2 stroke motor,but when I put it on gear either forward or reverse,it kinda loses power and I have to get on the gas pedal for the propeller to kick in,and it makes that exact same rattling sound
It knocked out the clutch dog and shredded a magnesium washer in my bigfoot 50. The color of the lower unit oil was mesmerizing
I have never heard prop chatter and I’ve been a boat owner for 30 yrs but then again I own a 115 hp 2-Stroke Mercury not a 4 - Stroke. Not sure why this makes a difference? Or why inline 4 vs V-4 would make any difference if the issue is in the gearcase and drive shaft. Very Strange!
Another great video. I have bad prop rattle with my 75 Merc Optimax with an aluminum prop made by Solas with an integral hub. I've considered buying a stainless prop just to be able to use a Flo-torq hub to try and fix the problem, but I've been told that with the added weight of the stainless prop it will probably rattle more. Any suggestions on how to fix this rattle??

I just got a 2020 Boston Whaler 130 with the Merc 40. Yes! Sounds like a bucket of bolts inside the lower unit in forward, at idle! Did you find a solution?

Is this still an issue with _new_ outboards? I can just picture someone with a brand new boat and motor(s) having to deal with this. I'd want to get it _IN WRITING_ from both the dealer and engine manufacturer that this is a "non issue".

Maybe, if there is a water pressure sensor. It depends on the motor. I can't imagine a 15hp having that, though. But ya never know.
What about small single cylinder engines I have a 5 hp Mercury motor all most brand new only about 1 and half hours on no chatter just checking
