    I did it last fall by throttling off too fast and going in reverse to avoid a sand bar that I should have known was there but forgot about. I missed the sand bar but when i tried to take off again it let go. 18 miles up a lake with no cell service lol. Long story short I now have a tool box with spare hubs and all the stuff needed to change it out on the fly. Great video wish I'd have watched this a year ago!

    I agree with you on this topic of a spun hub. And the rubber bushing was put in there to save gears in the lower unit and the prop in case you hit something. But more than often if you hit something it still gets the lower unit gears or bends the shaft and does not spin the hub. This is the part I don't quite understand how is the rubber bushing stronger than the shaft or gears.

    • @aquatickilla5471
      @aquatickilla5471 4 года назад

      Exactly....you have a hub that protects the lower unit gears if you hit something, but you have a skeg on the lower unit to protect the prop if you hit something, so no matter how you look at it....you do damage to the lower unit, but I guess it's better to replace a gear case housing vs. Gears, housing, drive shaft, and possibly powerhead damage due to the abrupt stop.
      I hit a rock on my inshore boat and did no damage to the prop, but the entire skeg is gone and I can visibly see the gears....lol
      And just the other day had my offshore boat out and hit absolutely nothing and rpms shot up on one motor and lost mph, had to limp home....spun hub

    1993 17' Boston Whaler Montauk with 90hp Evinrude in Northern Michigan. I change my water pump every 2 years. pump kit has stainless steel housing(O E M) When I was a young guy, I'd go out onto Little Traverse Bay; hit huge swells and over rev.(not good, but fun as hell!) cost me $2,000 to rebuild engine. Lesson learned. That was 20 years ago. Great video! Thank you

    Talking about hotter than normal exhaust temperatures, once you have a malfunctioning cooling system, not only do you have higher exhaust temperatures, but more importantly, there is a reduced amount of cooling water mixing with the exhaust. And that is what actually is what keeps the hub cool.

    I have a mercury xri 200 and this happened to me about two weeks ago. thats exactly what I did. it was getting dark and I punched the hotfoot to the floor to make it back to the launch and started to get up and it just stopped. if I put it in forward or reverse the prop spins but no thrust to push the boat and if I hit the hotfoot the rpm's go up but I go no where. so should I get a new hub pressed in or buy a new prop?

    • @bassresource

    Was on the lake yesterday I hit a log hidden behind a rolling wake was to late for me to miss. I had a slip now when I run half throttle water pours into the back from the motor sloshing it in. What do I need to do?

    • @bassresource
      @bassresource  3 года назад +1

      Although the hub is meant to take the brunt o hitting an underwater object like, there could still be damage to the lower unit. You should take it to a boat shop to have them look at it just to be safe.

  • @carstenkjller6680

    If You sails and hit a floating line, the engine and propel stops instantly, and if the propeller hits a small stonereef, that can spin the hub too.

      @@bassresource Well since it's been and i'm giving my age but 40 yrs since i was driving boats. Kids, skiing , ha not much fishing. 🍺🍺 Remember i hit some stupid pipe ( found out much later with low tide) far from home. Barely got boat to shore and i did have old prop and wrench under a seat. took a while but that saved our butts. LOL. didn't have a flash light. had to do in the dark. that sucked. sitting in four feet of water. Ha the good ol days. So back to the present. Waiting on new boat for some fishing and getting out. Hopefully comes soon. So i saw a video that caught my attention on spun a prop. I was like broke a prop ??and went to your channel which i have been following and subscribed to. Great info and whala you explained it fantastic. watched a few more after that. Ha seems that they came up with a great idea to not damage lower unit. I would have still took a chunk out of prop so i think for me just to feel better i will still have one. ha. But i see exactly what your saying. Not a need like before. I like working on my own stuff so appreciate such a easy explanation. 👍👍👍 Still learning and sure i will makes sone mistakes. Hoping to retire soon and get back out there and enjoy the water. Not just the way we did as kids. ha. thanks!

    Last time we went out our boat made a noise, my husband was like better hurry. Then it stopped spinning. He said the motor still turns but prop not spinning. We spent almost 6k on an 86 mercruiser a year or two ago. Lots of servicing paperwork included. I know I spent too much but I grew up on the lake and wanted a boat. Do you think it’s a spun hub on prop? Is that the first thing to diagnose considering the motor still turns? We were just cruising back to the dock didn’t hit anything when it happened. Hoping I can get hubby to find time to fix it. My dad has a boat mechanic but my hubby always finds a way to fix something. I can’t spent a grand on a 50$ fix

    • @craigmcelroy9477
      @craigmcelroy9477 Год назад

      Does the motor start, if it does it is the hub I think. I'm no master mechanic by any means, but I bought a boat and has a 3.0 mercury cruiser, went out first time and boat ran great, after one hour running, it went down, at a low rpm, it was fine, try to go faster and it would stop, replaced the hub and prop @ 300 bucks, went back out and at about one hour, done the same thing, I'm thinking it is maybe getting hot and spinning the hub, but the boat runs great, don't seem like it is hot, but there isn't anything else to spin or slip from what I see, guess I'm back to finding an issue that is becoming a headache and making boating a pain in the a**.

  • @lh98

    I wonder if starting on land using the muffs causes more exhaust heat in the hub and that's why they degrade faster. Personally I doubt there would be much heat from the exhaust when started in the water because the water is cooling the prop and hub just being submerged. I always start and warm my boat at home first so that when I get to the river I know she's gonna fire right up and go. Mine is carbureted so she's always a bit cold hard starting at first. Perhaps land starting is why I have a spun hub and am here viewing this video now. Btw your shirt looks like a tv commercial. 😂 thanks for the info.

  • @123chooby
    @123chooby 3 года назад

    I was following another boat and got into his prop wash and the motor over-revved and caught. It spun the hub out. I could still limp home at 5kts, any faster and prop would spin. I suspect hub was old also. Replace your hubs periodically.
