I was listening to Family out in the car one summer. Loud as hell lol. This guy comes to the car and I though oh crap it’s too loud and he’s going to complain. He leans his head in and says in a Britt accent, “Ladybug I was at a Family concert back in the day and we were all enjoying ourselves until Chappo got pissed off at a guy in the front for throwing shit at him! So Chappo is through and launches a Tambourine through the audience. It hits me up side the head and lands at my feet! I have this scar right here and that Tambourine!” Wow Sir you sure impressed me that day. After that I read a lot of tales of Chappo and launching items lol!

Saw Family 4 times in Cardiff in their heyday and Roger again a few years ago and still love 'em. He must've wrecked 100's of tambourines and threw 'em into the crowd but never managed to grab one, but I DID shake hands with him in Cardiff Coal Exchange a few years ago :-))

Unbelievable. I never thought I'd see Chappo at his best again. Saw Family at Sheffield City Hall in early 70's a few times. Best live band ever. Saw Chappo at Boardwalk in Sheffield a couple of years ago and the voice was just as good but he insisted on doing new stuff. No "GoodNews Bad News" no " Strange Band" What a shame. Still love him though

Saw them at a Lyceum all-nighter around 1971 -unbelievable! What a band, a strange band indeed but nonetheless superbly brilliant. Thanks for these clips. Cheers to Chappo, Johns W,Polli Palmer and Rob. We won't forget you.

Back in the day bought "Anyway" on a whim , knowing little of the band. The first track was a live version of GBBB and I don't think I was ever so hit in the face by any track before or since. Still the best live track I've ever heard. TBH I don't much like anything else they did....but this song is rock perfection. RC is astonishing. Thanks for the up chappo.

This performance, although the track is incomplete, sums up the magic I first witnessed at the IOW August 1970. "Anyway" came out not long after and I bought it, the first of many. Chapman here is at his most frenetic, almost insane, mental...but I love it!

What a great live clip! I saw Family on the Anyway tour back in 1970 at Sheffield City Hall and I still maintain that it was one of the best gigs I ever attended. We didn't see enough of Family on TV although I dimly remember watching a 25 minute in concert programme on late night TV; I think it was a recording of either a Scandinavian or a German rock show, any one got a copy?

Colin I think what you are alluding to was shown late On Fri 26 October 1984 on C4(?) I believe. It was done in France inside what appeared to be museum of war artefacts. Songs played were "Dim" and "Part of the Load" (amongst others). I had this on VHs tape until my ex-wife recorded over it. Don't know if the prog is on RUclips(he wrote wistfully!)

Votes in Newcastle like 1 Family.2 Animals.3 Stones
Absolutely dynamic use of stop/ go rhythms.Charlie a very underrated guitarist[played on ogwt with Us legends] and Rick Grech nicked for supergroup Blind Faith
Reason they didnt make it in the States was that Chappo threw the mike stad which hit Bill Graham who controlledall the majorhalls He couldnt cope
