  • Looking for an amazing waterfall walk on the Portuguese island of Madeira? Look no further than the PR9 Caldeirão Verde walk. This spectacular trail takes you along the levada da Serra de São Jorge through a lush valley to the base of a towering cliff, where you'll find a magnificent waterfall, known as the Devil's Cauldron. It is a beautiful and easy to follow levada that winds its way through the dense jungle-like forest. The trailhead at Parque Florestal das Queimadas is home to pretty thatched cottages, one a coffee shop, another a museum and shop where you pay for the parking (€3 per day in 2022) As you walk along the levada, you'll enjoy stunning views of the surrounding mountains and forests. The PR9 Caldeirao Verde is one of the most popular walking trails on Madeira, so getting there early to avoid the crowds is never a bad idea. If hiking on your own or in a small group, my tip would be to piggy-back onto another group otherwise as you get close to the Caldeirao Verde waterfall and the levada path narrows, you'll find yourselves constantly having to stop and move over as you're outnumbered by larger groups. As with almost all of the Madeira levada walks, this one is also relatively flat making it pretty easy despite the amazing things you'll be rewarded with. The Queimadas levada walk has a handful of tunnels, some fairly long, so a torch or flashlight is essential on this trail. Whether you're a nature lover or simply looking for a breath taking walk, the PR9 Levada do Caldeirao Verde walk is not to be missed. Madeira is an absolutely amazing place to hike and this levada is a great example of that. If you're planning to visit Madeira island, or are just looking for things to do in Madeira to decide on whether a Madeira vacation is right for you, I hope this video will be helpful.

    Thanks for sharing Caroline this very nice video. Love the pictures . Still looks like Hawaii , I love both Madeira and Hawaii which are volcanic Islands with the same type of climate. But there are no lovely Verde hikes in Hawaii. Can't belief people (men) peeing in the tunnels.👎🏻👎🏻 "Boys will be boys" Thanks for sharing. Hope you had a nice Valentine's Day💑 Hope Andy took you out for Dinner. Cheers 🍦🍦🤠

      Your Boys will be boys comment made me laugh Valentines is never a big deal for us because it's my birthday the day before so it feels a little silly to go out 2 nights in a row, just because society says we should. We've been away in Sweden, so I was treated to an amazing birthday meal, then on Valentines, went to an electric hockey game as their teams are much better than the UK's and the fans are intense in the best way possible! Hope you've had a nice Valentines! Cheers ☕☕

    Woah what a way to start the video, that view at the beginning was stunning. Clouds looked surreal and the time-lapse was perfect! What a spectacular find even with a couple of wrong turns. Love how you ended up at the wrong Levada, some wonderful waterfalls and crazy tunnels on that one, must have been fate! That is quite annoying when people don't even acknowledge your kindness in letting them pass, like you I always try to say thank you as a minimum. Cool room , just the job, hope that argument never materialised haha

      Haha, the argument never materialised - Andy never misses an opportunity to crack a joke! 🤦‍♀️🤣 Pleased you liked the start to the video - it was worth it in the end, but we learnt from our mistake on this one and the following day at Pico do Arieiro, we left earlier to have a buffer if we screwed up again and whilst much busier, we had a much more chilled sunrise experience!

    How are you doing mrs Caroline thank you for sharing your trips with us . As always iam gathering main information about places you visited briefly here it’s first of all meaning of Levadas are irrigation canals were built to carry water to agricultural crops around villages. There is whole network on Madeira island most of which are used by hikers to access many springs and waterfalls on island. Levada do caldeirao verde is undoubtedly most immersive of all mederia island . It’s part of official list of Madeira hiking routes . It’s possible to combine this hike with Levada do caldeirao which is however less safe . It’s one of best walks on island it’s filled with lush flora , many waterfalls and you often enjoyed amenity bed of clouds . Caldeirao Verde is located near Santana on northern side of Madeira. Road start to hike, you will walk by deranges that border Levada . Gradually enter forest of cedars beeches that make up Madeira Lauriss ilva forest .

      I found it interesting to learn that the paths along the Levadas aren't built for hikers though and that it's so maintenance workers can reach them... but they allow hikers to walk on them too which is amazing! It's interesting to hear what the internet thinks of this levada. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it, but I can list (and will list in a future video) a fair few walks we did on the trip which I preferred to Caldeirao Verde.

    How long did you stay in Madeira?

    • @WhenAdventureKnox
      @WhenAdventureKnox  Год назад

      Hi Luis, we were there for 2 weeks and 1 day (flew in on a Saturday, departed 2 Sunday's later). If you like the hiking element of the island, I think you can hit the main attractions in a week, but 2 weeks allowed time to do some non-hike activities and some lesser known trails too.
