Conquering Madeira's Most Challenging Hike: Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo PR1!

The Pico Arieiro to Pico Ruivo hike is also known as the Pico to Pico hike, or the Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo hike can be found in the Massif Central of Madeira and allows you to hike to the highest peak on Madeira - Pico Ruivo. We were tipped off to get there early in the morning, whilst it was still dark as the Pico do Arieiro sunrise was meant to be phenomenal. We set off with a lot of time to spare after a slightly poor execution of a sunrise at Bica da Cana the day before, and we were not left disappointed with the stunning cloud conversion thrown in for good measures. There are 3 main routes to get to the highest mountain on Madeira, one from Encumeada (said to be incredibly hard) one from Achada do Teixeira (said to be the easiest, but not as picturesque) and then the route from Pico do Areeiro, what felt like the best of both worlds. As Pico do Areeiro is the 3rd highest peak on the island, and Pico Ruivo is the highest, this strenuous hike takes in some of the highest peaks of Madeira. The PR1 Vereda do Arieiro provides you with what you could argue to be the best view in Maderia, if not, then settle for one of the best views in Madeira.
