Thank you for this really well done video tutorial. I recently picked up a Thompson PW 103-A-GBP, the predecessor of this machine, and your video helped me adjust it perfectly.
My friend gave me one of these machines. He used to repair sewing machines professionally and got it as a donation from a customer. He got it working pretty well. I had to jury rig the tensioner with half side of a pair of tweezers for a spring but otherwise that’s it. Between the two of us we brought it back from the dead. It sews almost anything. Seatbelts, backpacks, heavy cotton. I love it! Thanks for this video. May need to refer to it later on.
This is a great video. Thanks for posting it. It looks like I can apply this information to use on my Sailrite clone. I had a few hiccups when I first got it, but after some break-in it's working well now. With this video as a guide I'm confident in doing any needed adjustments in the future.
thank you for this excellent video, i tried to go on the internet to find a service manual and could not figure out a site to access a manual. i just came across your video and it gives me all the information i was looking for. i really appreciate the information given
Thank you for this outstanding video. It covers a multitude of sins (uh, Thompson clones) that many of us have. I got lucky because my REX came fully functional. The drive belt was misaligned, so some time bending the bracket (a different design than your Thompson) to change the position and angle of the idler pulley took care of that. Next thing is to move the servo from my Singer machine to the REX. The Singer is awesome with the servo addition, but it doesn't have a walking foot nor does it use the large needles of the REX.
Hello: I just ran across this video tonight which is a wonder that I hadn't seen it before. I have a Thompson PW 200 which I assume is very similar to the 201. I have not been able to find any guidance of any sort on this machine so this info from you is a boon. I have had mine for a couple of years and use it moderately. Very few issues but I am so glad to know how to make the adjustments you show. I am sure I will come back to reference this video from time to time. Thank you!
Nice info. and very detailed. I bought a Thompson years ago and it is still in the box, I never used it yet. I always wanted to do upholstery stuff. I'm not even sure what model it is. I'll have to check it and see which one. I remember it was expensive at the time.
One comment I would like to make. The small chrome screw-on piece on the side cover that is located about 7:00 o'clock from your thread tension adjuster is 180 degrees reversed. It is supposed to hook back around to the main vertical plate. The function is to prevent the cover from moving when the foot up/tension release lever is operated. The cover is held on by two only screws and this is a third fastener to stop side plate movement. I realize it looks like a thread guide to "who knows where" but it has a real function. Again, thank you for a wonderfully useful video. And nice camera work and editing. Nice clear audio too. Do you still have that Thompson PW-201?
First of all thanks for the great video. This machine is exactly a Singer 15k with modifications lol, I was looking for details on how they work so maybe I could transform my singer into one (I don't have access to these machines in my country).
AWESOME, GREAT JOB love mine and it still works. Mine has the bobbin arm that was broken when I got it, just pre-load bobbins but I love to find the part.
great video, really helpful, just found my machine which hasn't been used for 20 years and want to oil it and check it out, making masks so need a faster machine now.
@drsfloa Great video. I am having issues with thread tension on this machine. I have adjusted bobbin set screw and top thread tension knob dozens of times and still lower thread is loose.
Very impressive demo on diagnosing problems with walking foot sewing machine. I'm just getting started on leather sewing and thinking of purchasing a sewing machine like yours and would like to know what is the best needles for the Thompson machine. There are so many variations of needles out there, and like my regular sewing machine they are more incline to one type and make of needles over another. Thanks.
I just picked up a Thompson PW301 at a garage sale. It was cheap because they said the timing is off. I think it has all the problems you identified plus another couple.
Great video! I just purchased one that is not working but hope to get going and use on leather. It did not come with a foot petal. Can you show an example of one and how it attached?
Great info! I just got one of these and it looks like it might be out of adjustment. My stitch length is very short even with the lever all the way up and my tension set as low as possible.
That sounds like a feed dog issue. Remove the upper presser feet so you have a clear view of it. Pull out a ruler and measure the distance it is traveling when turning the wheel, it should move 4-5 millimeters per rotation when the stitch length is at the maximum. Push/Pull on the feed dog and make sure it doesn't move unless you are turning the wheel (sometimes the screw/connector come lose and needs to be tightened). When the needle is at the lowest position, the feed dog should barely have any space between it and the machine (
Excellent video. I was looking for something like this. Just a question, sailrite managed to increase stitch length to 6mm? Would you know which parts would be replaced to achieve that?
Hello and thanks for your video. I have a Thompson PW-301 and I am having similar issues as you. Can you tell me if there is anyplace to buy parts for this machine? My machine has a cracked rear pressure bar bracket. I discovered this while following your video on adjusting the pressure foot. The cracked bracket is binding and not allowing the mechanism to smoothly travel up and down. Thanks.
Unfortunately I don't have that part. Reach out to dandyrelics on ebay, I purchased some extra parts from a machine he's selling part by part. You might want to purchase the whole front assembly in case you come across any other parts you need. Good luck!
I bought a PW201 with a broken bobbin winder. Sailrite does not carry the part. I have tried the Sailrite LZ part from Sailrite but it isn't close. Has anyone found a retrofit or repair for the broken bobbin winder?
Great video especially of how to adjust the presser feet , can't thank you enough. Mine must be a slightly different vintage as the shuttle drive is pinned to the shaft not set screwed hence no adjustments and the spring plate is attached to the bobbin/shuttle race not the bobbin retaining ring. Anyone know where to get parts?
Would you be able to take a picture of the inside of the front cover? I believe my 201 is missing a part that interfaces between the tension pin and the presser foot lever. And i can't find a picture anywhere.
Hi there I’m hoping someone can answer this question. I was gifted Thomson mini walking foot PW 103A . The people who gave it to me thought I could use this for quilting? Is this an adequate machine to quilt with?
Hi Beth! I'm not a quilter, but I did a quick google search and it looks like a walking foot is useful for quilting. Assuming the machine you received is in good working order, you should be good to go. If it needs to be repaired, you might find it difficult to find someone that can do that. Before you start any projects I would do some basic sewing on the machine and make sure the feeding, tension adjustment and stitch lengths are working as expected. Search youtube for walking foot quilting videos there are quite a few. Good luck!
My thompson machine when it sew the stitches at the top is good at the bottom is bad.. I follow your thread settings but still the stitches at the bottom is not good.
Thank you for this really well done video tutorial. I recently picked up a Thompson PW 103-A-GBP, the predecessor of this machine, and your video helped me adjust it perfectly.
Thank You for all the time and effort that you put into this excellent Tutorial. Very Professional.
Excellent photography and nicely paced. Thankyou so much.
Thank you so much . I have searched this so much and you are correct nothing that demonstrates the walking mechanism
This the BEST machine repair and tuning video I've ever watched and I've watched dozens!!!!!! Thank you thank you thank you
My Thompson has the tensioners on the front like the Sailrite machines have. Very helpful video.
My friend gave me one of these machines. He used to repair sewing machines professionally and got it as a donation from a customer. He got it working pretty well. Great video! I’ve referenced it several times to get my 201 dialed in. I haven’t found anything else on line as thorough. Thank you.
We just acquired a Thompson PW 201 and this has been great to get acquainted with it. Thank you for this video.
Can you tell me what needle size these machine takes? I am getting conflicting info. TYVM
Best video ever about walking foot, thanks so much.
This is a great video. Thanks for posting it. It looks like I can apply this information to use on my Sailrite clone. I had a few hiccups when I first got it, but after some break-in it's working well now. With this video as a guide I'm confident in doing any needed adjustments in the future.
This is beyond excellent. Thank you.
Great video...thanks for taking the time to make it.

Very useful video. Thank you. I just thrifted one of these machines and I am sure it will need some TLC.

Did it work out for you? It seems that this machine isn't well suited to thin fabric.
@drsfloa Great video. I am having issues with thread tension on this machine. I have adjusted bobbin set screw and top thread tension knob dozens of times and still lower thread is loose.

Terrific video, learned enormous amount of information. I just picked up a Thompson PW-200 I would assume they’re about the same your 201machine?
Great video! I just purchased one that is not working but hope to get going and use on leather. It did not come with a foot petal. Can you show an example of one and how it attached?
Very good vid. Great deal on this machine. Have you compared this to a Sailrite machine? Do you feel both are pretty much the same machine?

I was given a Thompson mini walking foot PW 103Aé Where could I get a manual or more information. Great video informative and easy to follow.
Thank you. Do you have a video on how to lube it.
can you add the walking foot parts to a regular machine ???
Hello and thanks for your video. I have a Thompson PW-301 and I am having similar issues as you. Can you tell me if there is anyplace to buy parts for this machine? Do a video on inner and outer foot timing and heights.

below is the secret video y'all are looking for...
Looking for a bobbin winder....Sailrite sent me the wrong one. They said it would work but its to big.
I know Im quite randomly asking but do anyone know of a good website to watch newly released series online ?
@Russell Duke I use flixzone. You can find it on google :)
@Joseph Walker yup, I have been watching on FlixZone for years myself =)
@Joseph Walker thanks, I signed up and it seems to work =) I appreciate it !!
@Russell Duke Glad I could help xD
Could you go deeper how to make the machine to turn.? Thanks.
How to fix thread being hard to flow flawless. It break all the time right after one turn.
Do the Thompson machines need to be cooled with a pan of oil underneath?
No

Check out this video from the machine break down. There should be a few shots in there to help you out. ruclips.net/video/pa9trp41Wus/видео.html

Class 15 bobbin
My thompson machine when it sew the stitches at the top is good at the bottom is bad.. I follow your thread settings but still the stitches at the bottom is not good.
