We bought a REX over a SAILRITE. Did we choose well? (Sailing SV Sarean) EP. 27

  • Our old 1950's sewing machine was a monster who loved eating anything you put under its foot. It was time to swap it out for something much more practical - so after much research and pondering we took a gamble - and bought a REX.
The REX is a copy of the famous SAILRITE - and it had received mixed reviews, as with other copy models (New-Tech, Family Sew, Strongarm) however we took the gamble and ordered one.
Typically, we put it to the test on one of the tougher jobs one can do - sail repair. Did we have a win? Did we buy a dud? Watch and see...

Great vid guys! We're 15 yr Sailrite owners and...they are just the same as your Rex in many ways - SR have moved forward with new models over the years but their main advantage is they really tune up and "run in" their machines. The monster wheel was the bigee - it always used to come with the screw-in screw out clutch - never truly reliable. The needle bar is the same as far as I can tell, the slippage probably saves needle impacts from breaking the cast dog piece below the plate. We've managed to do that even so! The drive wheel tensioner bracket you highlighted as bent - and the bearing in the transfer wheel is another issue - every aspect of the drive train affects the sewing consistency and thus the thread tension ultimately. If it starts squeaking replace it. The one thing I notice with the clones is that most come with a single-width lower feed dog - whereas the SRs have a double grip dog. This works to increase the walking foot area but when we broke it I noticed that the double-wide assembly has a very skimpy section of the casting - a weak link. Perhaps the clones forgo the double wide dog to increase the size of the casting? The larger needles definitely help, as does the silicone-based Sewers Aid, when going through heavy weather stuff. thx agin!

Hey Folks , It's two years later. I'm in the market for a sewing machine and was searching for reviews of the Rex and your video came up. Your reviews was very helpful , I hope you are still doing well and enjoying life .

Hello. Unbelievable luck for me. I am an amateur (ZERO) sewing experience but I can do anything. After exhausting different web sites for used machines I finally figured I need a walking foot and that led to looking again for machines for that foot. Nothing or way to expensive and used of course. I finally narrowed it down to three affordable new ones and the one you have was my pick. Well, while looking at other previous videos of other machines and forums I remembered the sail rite 2 wheel. I wanted to know how to attach it or if it would. I saw REX in your title and I'll be darned...PERFECT video to see it done by you and ANNND some great tips to make it work better. Thank you 'sew' much. I am a fan of sailing NOAH and now I will be subscribing to you. Florida here and working on a Bow rider Regal interior. gday mate :)

I also purchased a Rex and am pretty happy with it. Paid about 1/3 the cost of an LSZ1. One of the things you get with the Sailrite model is it's set up right from the factory. The Rex wasn't, but Sailrite published he setup videos here on RUclips so I was able to do it myself. See the vidoe where they compare the LSZ1 to the "knockoffs" (actually the LSZ1 is the knockkoff). They show some parts they have beefed up because the originals will break. Those beefed up parts will also work in the Rex so if they do break just replace them with Sailrite parts. You could replace all of them and still be way ahead.

We're about to retire and spend more time on our 28ft Bristol Channel Cutter. We have no dodger or Bimini and our covers are old and patched, so we were looking into canvas work. We got one estimate for a dodger and frame at $5,400.00! Even getting a Sailrite frame, skin, and machine seemed awfully expensive. I was about to give up on the idea when I saw your video. Thank you for opening up this option.

I have the exact same machine, and really like it. I use the same pipe pliers trick for the clutch. It sews my sails well, except for the thick parts at the ends. I may try that Bar modification you described. Thank-you for the Manual!

I bought an OMEGA which is the 9 inch version of your machine. From what I can tell the machines are made in China and marketed under numerous brand names which includes SAILRITE. I had to do a few modifications to my OMEGA which included the Monster Handwheel (purchased from Sailrite), a new idler pulley assembly and I also had to reform the pulley bracket. After finishing all of the repairs and modifications the machine works beautifully. With the Monster Handwheel the machine can sew with the motor or by hand. My reason for purchasing the Monster Handwheel was because the handwheel that came with the machine was a casting and was warped, which prevented the bobbin mechanism from working properly.

I have used both machines. The Sailrite is definitely of superior quality. They obviously took the rough REX like machines and improved and fine tuned them and changed out some parts as well. It's not just a REX machine that's been painted and marked up in price. Sailrite also offers incredible support and online instructional videos, as well as high quality optional accessories and supplies. In America we have a saying "buy once, cry once"...it means pay the extra money for the quality, and you won't have to worry about fixing, modifying, or replacing a substandard product.

Hi Meg, off sailing at the moment and can't watch your weekly Vlog, but will be interested to see your comments. We purchased a Strong Arm a few years ago and very pleased with it - about 1/2 the cost of a Sailrite. I have become a master of retuning the machine as well as rebuilding it as various parts fall off. Not a big problem and the tuning was probably more due to my lack of sewing experience and trying to sew some very thick sail crews. I have built my knowledge base watching the Sailrite videos which is a bit cheeky. Projects so far include sail cover for main, generator cover, steering station cover as well as lot of repairs including the home shade sails which paid for the purchase in one go. Haven't the skills for UV replacement or dodger (YET)

    • @SailingSVSarean
      @SailingSVSarean  6 лет назад

+Terry Baker Haha yes sounds a but like the Rex, but gee it's great to be able to finally tackle the big projects and know it'll all hold up. Being able to utilise bigger needles which can take sail thread is a win also.
A friend has a Strong Arm and we initially tried to order one, however the supplier has changed business.
I have uploaded pages of the Strongarm manual for people to download, as we found it extensive and very useful.
Congrats on all the projects - who knew you were a Mother Hubbard! :)
At some stage we are going to lay up a fibreglass dodger. We are thinking to lay plastic over the current one in order to make up a mould... hopefully it'll work ;)

Ah, yes! Sailrite, or something else. I had the same dilemma. The Sailrite is the best. No doubt about it. However, it is expensive. So, I bought a Reliable for $399. I had some of the same problems. Reliable sells a Cuda Crank, which is similar to the Monster Wheel. It threw the belt all the time and I had to bend the mounting bracket to make it work. That being said, the Reliable does the job. If I was independently wealthy, I would buy the Sailrite. But, I'm not! Good luck mates!

You two are adorable! I just got an old Thompson. It runs good. To be honest I don't have any evidence that the Sailrite machines are any better than the other brands. They are all made in China or Taiwan or wherever at this point, and the quality is about the same across brands from what I've heard.

Hey guys, great video. I just bought a machine identical to yours from Alibaba (minus the Rex label). I also bought the monster balance wheel from the same supplier, but as well as the clutch screw it has 2 Allen key grub screws under the drive belt that clamp down on the shaft giving extra grip. Also an upholsterer friend of mine told me you don’t need to disengage the clutch to wind the bobbin (which I have successfully done) as long as there is nothing obstructing the needle and the presser foot is up.

Some critical parts are different from nailright. If your presser feet get out of timing , you wont get full video from them either. Screw hole on metric screws are small and cheap. Nailright is bossier and they went will Allen's. Not hard to modify if you buy from them . Dremel and diamond bits , cause hardened steel .

there are sprecial needles for sale. these have a tip thats sharpened in a triagular shape so they cut the material instead of puncture. you can stitch a whole cow back together with those.

You referred to your thread as "cotton". I hope that is an English colloquialism because cotton does not hold up well in sunlight and salt water. Better to use UV treated Polyester thread at least V92 (T90) weight or, even better, PTFE thread like Tenera. Love your vids, your can-do attitude and your accent.

The Sailrite has issues also. The one most mentioned is the very loud motor, which as one reviewer mentioned, she needs to wear ear plugs when using it.

I purchased a sailrrite lsz1 years ago to make my own dodger, bimini and repair sails. Sadly I never used it after the boat sank, so sold it on ebay at a good discount. I had planned to purchase another sailrite machine in the future, but now will look at other options. The rex looks pretty much the same, but the question is, is it? Lots of knock offs out there that don't perform the same. But with your mods you seem to have a good machine.

I’m thinking of buying one to do a delta enclosure on both of my fishing boats because I really don’t want to pay for a sailrite machine ether,350us sounds a hole lot better then 1000us... thanks in advance guys! +S/V Tranquility Hi guys! We purchased it from a local chandlery 'Marlin Marine Whitsundays', however you will likely get a better deal online. We were very lucky with the UV thread also as the sailmaker we spoke with had some extra in stock, so sold it to us there and then. Very handy.

Very interesting about the Rex, I've brought a older Pfaff, but there's no way that you could put it onboard! I've also been caught with a few mods, so you don't have that to yourself. In my maths you saved a third, postage is definitely a killer to Oz from the states. Thanks for sharing 😃

Howdy Howdy, spot on video, I have been looking for a machine to sew banners & I think the Rex might just do the job, I have been looking at others not a Salrite & there up at the 2 grand mark, where did you buy it from & all the parts please if that no problem, I have downloaded the jpg's from your website & will make them into a PDF for you if you like, that might make it easier for other to download as one file.
    Cheers

+Paul Swan Hey Swany! Thanks so much! I actually made it into a pdf file, however I couldn't load it to the website - so had to go with the jpg's. Thanks for the offer tho!
We purchased the Rex through a dealer on Ebay. I will nab their details for you later and post back here.
The Monster wheel we ordered from Sailrite directly. Might pay you to research their 240V motor over purchasing the converter, unless like us, you dont mind.
      Thanks again - rock on!

    • @MrRandyk2
      @MrRandyk2 2 года назад

I know, I sometimes wonder if comments are turned off? I do not get notifications because I use my phone and doesn’t show them...
The said they bought it from eBay, and gave the user name.
I just took the risk and ordered one of the least expensive that I could find on “Etsy”. It is taking a while to come, so I’ll see how things go. There was another company that I found “HdSew Portawalker” for reasonable price and they have the 9” model. I emailed them twice though, and no response.
Also Jack, there were a couple of used ones (Lsz-1 Sailrite) that I found, but the asking price was so close to new that I skipped them. In 2016 Sailrite made several improvements, so this is desirable. And... Sailrite just announced a servo motor bundled with it, but....you need to do a $1,600 dance!!!!!!! So, I’m testing out my $350 bundle soon. Hope you end up with a good machine!

Cheers Gang. Not so sure all the bugs have been worked out on the Sailrite, Ive certainly had a few issue’s with mine. But then again, my experience with larger commercial machines over the years leaves me a bit bias. Word of caution, the set screw for the needle bar is designed to allow the needle bar to move should you hit something hard while under power. Best to hand walk when going through the thick stuff. Replacing a bent needle bar can cause you a ton of grief. Also, get yourself a bit of beeswax when trying to go through really think stuff, especially plastic fittings and such. Its a good lubricant and wont stain your work for the most part. And it will seal up tiny pinholes in your canvas too. Keep up the great work, and enjoy the journey. Good choice. I've done a little research and it is in the centre of options with a better price. I love walking foot machines, you can make so many things including leather goods, fabulous not just for sails. I have on old industrial machine which, now that I see a counter top machine, will be ditching in favour of a Rex. Now here is, what I cal an essential self help machine, that will burn a hole in your mind till you get one... www.ausee.com.au/shop/category.aspx?catid=46 ...a small but very usable little lathe that I saw at a recent trade show in Sydney. The supplier is in Melbourne. This is small enough to stow away and bring out onto the bench when you need to fix that round bit. It turns up to 110 dia and 125 between centres yet is only 440mm long and $500 new. They have a range of sizes to fit available space. The other yachtie essential I discovered is that Fruedenberg have an "o" ring seal kit that uses rolls of "o" material that you cut to length and glue to form which ever diameter seal that you need, ie a universal seal kit, ie2 you don't need to keep so many spare parts.
