Have you heard about the Turul statue in Munkács or Munkachevo (idk the name in Ukranian) it was built in 1895 for Hungary's 1000 year aniversary they built only 7 of the in the entire carphatian basin , but in 2022 they took it down and replaced it with a huge ukranian coat of arms and they also took down the hungarian plate (its ok to build a ukranian statue but why destroy the old Hungarian one ?) its kind of sad :(

Eugenia, its two laws that are on debate due to forced ukrainization of minorities: 2017 Educaton law much cancelling education on minority language from the 5th grade ( secondary school)which means that instead of ukrainian learned as second language, púp ILS would require to learn all materials in ukrainian, while minority language can be taught in 1 class a week; 2. the 2019 Language act, "On supporting the functioning of the Ukrainian language as the State language". The law made the use of Ukrainian compulsory (totally or within quotas) in more than 30 spheres of public life, including public administration, electoral process, education, science, culture, media, economic and social life, health and care institutions, and activities of political parties. The law did not regulate private communication. Some exemptions were provided for the official languages of the European Union and for minority languages, with the exclusion of Russian, Belarusian and Yiddish. The Venice Commission and Human Rights Watch expressed concern about on both law's failure to protect the language and education rights of Ukrainian minorities. Apart from Hungary, Romania, Poland, Bulgaria and other countries. The Romanian parliament passed a motion condemning the law and warned that Ukraine could not proceed towards EU integration without respecting the language rights of national minorities. The topic is hot in Romania as well, as the number of ethnic Romanians in the chernowitz region is even higher, nevertheless as Romanians are also impacted by the banning of the Orthodox church as well. So no, these concerns are not an Orban lie, they are actual public concerns and topics in both of these countries where large portion of the voters expect firm representation on the topic from the governments. Actually apart the EU country ethnics, there is also concern on the minorities as ie Rusins in Zakarpathia, a historic minority much endangered in the current headwinds. Let’s be positive the issue will be solved soon, bearing in mind the grace period is over this year, and the education law is coming to effect this year after 1 year of postponement. I am sorry to say, Ukraine govt. will have to adapt to EU best practice in this topic, all countries have reworked their respected regulations conform Venice Court suggestions. Nothing more is expected here, than to follow what others did.

Because they have a different approach to language rights in education. Plus, Slovakia and Romania being part of the EU with virtually no borders, families are no longer torn apart, working /studying/making business on the other sideof the border is not a barrier.

    • @katalinkozak9869

All of this has been been nicely worked out during the accension talks to EU and bilaterally. Both Slovakia and Romania made huge progress in harmonizing their language, minority and education laws to EU expectations. Serbia, actually went even further and reintroduced regional autonomy to Voivodina region as it was in Yugoslavia era. Since 2022, Zakarpathia has a very cooperative governor who managed to calm some major terror and abuse concerns that arose in Munkachevo after 2015 . The cooperation with the governor and tge Hungarian state is perfect, whatever he needs, the Hu govt is trying to provide immediately, so that locals and the 100ths of internal refugees from East Ukraine can cope as well as possible in this dire situation. Unfortunaly however on legislation, the govt and parliament needs to act. And there we have some extreme hardliner nationalists. Lets be positive, everything is expected is to pretty much go back to the 2014 state. People learned Russian when they needed, they will learn ukrainian too in a generation. Up to Janukovich leaving, Russian was the other official language so people coped with one or another. Lets face it it is difficult , when from 1 day to another one has to adapt to so frequent changes. Until 1991 the official language was Russian, Btw 1938 -45 huhgarian, 1920-38 slovakian, 1867-1920 Hungarian, 1700-1867 german due to Habsburg rule, 1000-1700 Hungarian. In 2000’s , we still had elderly who lived in 5 countries, without ever leaving their village. Zakarpathia could be the symbol of the insane history of the 20th century Eastern Europe. God bless, all ethnicities in Ukraine would deserve finally some peace, freedom and prosperity!

I'm Australian born but with 2 German parents. I recently worked in Bosnia with some on an international project where I met some older Hungarians and Romanian that harbor 70 year old resentment against Ukraine. None so old they were born at the time. It was passed on from parents.. . It was poignant given the Russian backed Ethnic cleansing by "Greater Serbia" extremists that lead to NATO involvement in the region to stop a genocide.
-I simply said to that the people that started a civil war in Yugoslvia were total idiots. (I was really talking to them) That if they had of just been peaceful for 15 years they would have joined the EU and the Schengen Zone. Then any person of any language can work and travel and buy property anywhere they like. The EU was designed to stop war. Once Ukraine is in the EU there is no more excuse for resentments. The EU arose out of French desires to prevent future wars with Germany forever by integrating the French and German economies so tightly that war was unthinkable.
-Orban is an idiot and possibly a Russian agent but he is a determined one. Unfortunately the EU elites have gone insane with an open borders policy to dubious refugees which is morally wrong. That has to change. Putin exploits this by propagandizing the alt right in Europe, quite successfully.

Not Ukraine, Soviet Ukraine being part of USSR. Ukraine has a very challenging history as so many countries here in Eastern Europe. Actially the nation that has the biggest grief against western Ukrainians is Poland due to the insanity of the banderists (see Wolyn/ Lemberg or no Lviv massacres). Ukraine region was always very problematic and often bloody as the Balkans. My dads family is from there hence the name 😂! They find refuge in Transylvania, only then to be again refugees after Trianon in Budapest 1920. My grandad was born in a Wagon refugeecamp on the outskirts of the City which housed 100.000 of thousands. They returned later due to conditions, and noone ever left again despite constant headwinds. It is insane, that almost every generation faced war, ethnic or political athrocities in this region. When we thought its over in the 90’s, as you mention it started again in Yugo and now Ukraine. I would punish all who are lost in direction to eternal play/ repeat of Sag mir ep die Bluhmen sind… until they understand!

Transcarpathia, despite having 3 border crossings (where trade is uninterrupted), is one of, if not the poorest, region in Ukraine. Customs officers, who have been sent here from Lviv and other western regions (where there is only 1 border crossing), complain that they recieved 20 000 hrivnas in other counties and only get 8000 here. Again, the money from these customs does not go to Transcarpathia.
The law mentioned in the video would not only limit the use of hungarian in education, but in everyday life as well: for example a hungarian doctor couldn't talk to his patient in hungarian, but would be forced to speak in ukranian, even if both of them very native hungarian speakers. Not to mention, that hungarian children in Transcarpathia struggle with ukranian, because it is taught to them in school, as if they were native ukranians. They study words forthe first 2 grades and then are taught grammar, as if they were already proficient in ukranian.
In october of 2022 a sculpture if the Turul bird (the national animal of Hungary and the hungarian people) have been removed from Munkács/Mukachevo. The sculpture stood there for decades and noone took offense. It was not installed by separatist or without permission from Kiev. Yet in 2022 it was removed and the Trizub (the trident, which is an important symbol for Ukraine) took its place. Munkács/Mukachevo still has a notable hungarian population, though of course, not as much as Beregszász/Beregovo. The hungarian names of some settlements have also been removed since the start of the war.
Lastly, the frequent power outages, that plague Ukraine started in the autumn of 2022 in Transcarpathia and at first, only in Transcarpathia. When people started asking around, the justification for these outages were "be glad, that you do not get artillery barrages daily" and was essentially a way of bringing the war to us. Later these power outages spread to all of Ukraine. However, a graph from the company Oblenergo showed, that Ungvár/Uzhorod got almost as much electricity as th 3x larger Lviv, despite the Ungvár's lack of power. A month later, it was brought to light, that the company sold electricity to european countries through Ungvár. The company was fined 80 000 hrivnas, which is equivalent to one days earnings for them.

When aspiring dictators and their ideologies fail they always fall back on nationalism and territorial expansion to shore up their support. The narrative of oppression is an easy way to excuse these ideas and is pretty much what the Russians did in Eastern Ukraine.
As for the change in language laws; the parents in these areas are tax payers and their children deserve the same educational opportunities as any other Ukrainian citizen. As most third level institutions in Ukraine operate with Ukrainian as their academic language, depriving Hungarian speakers of a Ukrainian language education reduces the opportunities of these Ukrainian citizens. In short it’s Ukraines responsibility that these kids learn in the Ukrainian language.
What Orban sells as ‘oppression’ is actually a country giving its people more opportunity.

I personally know people from other ethnic minorities in Transkarpathia, there exist several German speaking villages (some Swabian ones in the lowland and some of Austrian origin in the Eastern mountainous area). I also know some of the Romanian minority.
The question those people ask themselves is not "Are we opressed?". The question they ask themselves is, would our lifes have been better if we would have stayed with Czechoslovakia like in the interwar periode, or with Hungary as in the centuries before, or maybe even with next door Romania. Than we would be EU-citizens, we could travel everywhere without visa, we would not be affected by this war, we certainly would be wealthier, life would be easier, etc.
Just think, to travel to 500 km away Vienna, they first have to go 700 km East to Kiev to apply for visa there at the embassy, than stay there a few days until you get you passport back, than go back home, relax from this first exhausting trip, and than prepare for going to the originally intended destination.
Those people just think: what is it my business, what is going on on the other side of the Carpathians. This view is very common even in neighbouring Romania. Transylvanians also say that they don't care for what is going on on the other side of the mountains. That's how all people inside the Carpathian basin think, not only in Ukrainian Transkarpathia.

This was a massiive violation of minority rights, which are not just about using your language in public, but also accesing education and public institutions in Hungarian. Hi. A Hungarian here. Re-electing Orban and his party over and over again is our national shame and a tragedy. What concerns the language law and what constitutes "oppression" though, I disagree with you. Forcing you to learn subjects in a language other than your own language is an attempt to assimilate minorities. Yes, there are more bloody ways to pursue this, but still, this law curbs minority rights quite significantly. Beregovo has 50%+ Hungarian population (i.e. minority is a majority), so right and possibility to use their native language there is one thing, but the law (even the version amended in 2023) provides little to no rights in areas where this percentage is under 10%. So, while I support Ukraine 100% and detest what our government does, I believe Ukraine should also be more open to discussion on this issue as this language law thing is rather counter-productive.

@@荒井まめ-m6e At least it is not prohibited to teach and learn whatever subject in German. There are several German (Slovak, Croat, Romanian, etc) schools around Hungary where the language of tuition is in these languages. Whether there are enough schools to offer education in German, Coat, Slovak etc, I don't know. But at least, currently there is no law that those that do exist and operate should close or give up teaching in the given language. As far as I know there are roughly 130 minority schools in Hungary. Unfortunately if population of a certain minority community is not very dense in an area, it is possible that they cannot execrise this right in the in their own village or even in their own region. But if there is funding and enough teachers, it is possible to establish such schools. I think there are 80+ ethnic German educational institutions in Hungary, not counting schools where education is bilingual and those that are primarily for German students (not ethnic citizens of Hungary). Also, some of these German institutions are (partly) sponsored by Germany (e.g Andrassy University and several secondary schools.)

Or do they do as most of Europe and have "English" available for tourists. Not doing so seems to be an economic penalty for them. If I was Ukrainian and had a choice, I would go to the business that caters to me enough to include Ukrainian names/descriptions.
Secondly, Beregovo only became Ukrainian because of the Soviets. Does Ukraine get much benefit from that area (economic mostly)? Does it give the area much support?
What does the local citizenry consider themselves? Ethnically Hungarian, I'm sure, but do they "feel" Ukrainian?
Then again, Belegovo could be used as a negotiating prize if something came up with Hungary and EU financing or NATO membership. Sometimes you have to grease the palms of those that have what you want.
But that depends on the Citizens of that area.

Even the deepening of Bîstroe channel was made by the Ukraine without the permission of the Romanian government endangering the Danube Delta environment which is under the UNESCO protection.
So please let the suggar coating but Ukraine act in many ways as Russia and shame on you for this!

As a separate fact, around the years 1840-1867, according to the Hungarian statistician Elek Fényes, the proportion of ethnic groups in "Great Hungary" was as follows: Hungarians - 4812759 - 37.36%, Slavs - 4330165 - 33.62%, Vlachs - 2202542 - 17.1%, Germans - 1273677 - 9.89%, Jews - 244035 - 1.89% and others 0.15%. Hungarians (and some other nations in this region) are not immigrants (well, not modern day immigrants), these minorities (in several cities even still majority) have been living there since the beginnings of time. The region belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary between 895 and 1920 and Hungarian was and still is the majority language and culture in large parts of that area. Hungarians do not have problem with Ukrainian immigrants there, but try to protect their right to use their language freely, even in schools. This has virtually nothing to do with Orban, but he of course uses this as a good argument for being Putin's puppet.

It was my land hundred or more years ago, I want it back mentality is wrong in this century. Old and useless. The new is cooperation regardless of nationality. Working together is makes us richer and stronger. Against like Putin’s Russia. But, there are leaders who are dividing us for ruling us.

Think of the Hungarian speaking areas in Ukraine as the French speaking area in Canada and you'll get it why Hungarians feel threatened by Ukrainian nationalism and language laws.

The language law is/was opresive, because it denies children education in their own language. The law was found wanted by the Venetian commission.😂😅

I have been my self in Ukraine ушгород and surounding villages and the ukrainians were very rude to me when they heard that i spoke hungarian with my family members. And i am an ethnic hungarian from slovakia so i know how rasist the slovaks are towards us and the same is in ukraine. Of course there are always good people too but the goverment of these countries are against hungarians. Also why is zelensky sending the ethnic hungarians to die in your ukraine war? Its not even their Business. Why is zelensky sending my people to the meat Grinder? And why do we need to help ukraine? You are not in the EU. You guys should just surrounder to end this proxy war which you can not win it only leads to more and more death people. People that die for nothing.

Maybe because ethnicity doesn't equate to citizenship, and that's why people fight, and many of them left on their own.

So if they all going to leave for Hungary I don’t see a problem here, to the contrary-problem solved! I met Ukrainian ppl here in the US, very very bad impression, it’s personal one… as far as Russia, if it will help Hungary regain our lost territory, I guess it’s worth it.

Orban's claims will lead to the enclavation of these territories inhabited mostly by ethnic Hungarians, enclaves in which young people will no longer have the same chances and opportunities as other young people with Ukrainian citizenship, not knowing the majority language will be a handicap in getting a good job , or to the desire to occupy leading positions in state institutions, will mean blocking in a reduced space in the Hungarian community. The chances of progressing outside the country will be equal to the chances of any other foreign national who has left his homeland.

Give back Kárpatalja, and problem is solved. It is ancient Hungarian land. Not even Ukrainians stole it, but the Czechs, then the Russians, and they give it to Ukraine 73 years after WWI. Ukraine didnt even exist when it was already stolen. Ukraine illegally occupies it, its a fact.
