Nice educational video that puts things in context. That Epiphany as a sort of tradition I'm not sure anyone here practices. From what I could find, the first club of winter swimmers was formed in the 1920s in Prague. Their main event, called ‘Memoriál Alfreda Nikodéma’ in honor of the man who founded the club, takes place on the 26th of December. To me it seems like they just mixed everything they thought was useful for propaganda, since the slogan ’In a healthy body there is a healthy spirit‘ is just a paraphrase of ‘Mens sana in corpore sano’ by Decimus Junius Juvenalis from the 2nd century AD.

I enjoyed your video, Eugenia! I am old enough to remember visiting Ukraine (from Canada) during the Soviet Union. I can recall the smell of strong body odor on the summer busses in Lviv because no one had antiperspirant. I gave away a lot of perfume samples because it was a great luxury at the time. And I remember the terrible poverty in the early 1990s, that affected my Ukrainian relatives. They sometimes didn't have enough money for bread. It is so important to be thankful for what we have. It is also very important for me to continue helping Ukraine and Ukrainians in any way I can! Wishing you good health, happy moments and dreams come true! 💙💛🇺🇦✨️

Hello Eugenia ☺️, great seeing you but apologies for the delay. I've had problems with technology since arriving in Ukraine and in a restaurant enjoying a lovely breakfast and WiFi. My supplier promises to have my tech issues fixed soon. Your video on traditional gift giving during soviet times is interesting but probably not too dissimilar from other countries. When I buy gifts for others, I always make sure that the gifts are what the recipient wants and likes and not what I think that they want or like. It's worked well for me so far. Thanks for thee video Jane. My parents were children during the Great Depression in the US. When I was young they were still pretty frugal. So Christmas and birthdays were times for practical gifts but also a few things just for fun. I was a curious kid so something educational could be practical and fun. Lots of memories. Thanks for reminding me.

If we want to be precise, the majority of these "Hungarians" are historically Ukrainians who got forcefully hungarized during the Habsburg times. Also in Hungary there are no bilingual signs in minority areas, Hungarians are unfortunately a very toxic society.

That’s a great story. When was growing up, I was the kid who was going around getting stuff people would throw out because it was broken, but it wasn’t because I was able to fix it. At first it was radios or microwaves or like vacuum cleaners and stuff, but then I would get cars when I got older. I would give away to people that needed it. After I got through with college I didn’t need to fix things but I still do it. I have a hard time when driving through the neighborhood and see something I know I can fix but my wife probably disown me if I brought home, and neighbors would probably be suspicious.
