The Rangers Are Building a Risky Team (And It Might Work)

- Hey everyone!
We are finally at the cusp of a new season. Every team has their own goals and ambitions. One team that's looking to take that next step this season is the Texas Rangers. In the past 2 seasons, they've spent more on free agents than any other team. Last year, they finished well under .500, but they seem to have a clear long term plan. The question is, will it work?

It worked...
Part 2 coming soon
When is it coming out
It brought rangers fans to tears. I am still in shock.
@@jrnorton4647 aiming for next week
@@UpfrontandDirect I'm right there with you. I'll still never get over it. I've gotten to witness(not in person) the Stars, Mavericks, and now the Rangers first chamionship reigns so it's quite a surreal feeling.
Cant wait!!!
Half a year later and its safe to say that its worked out!
Facts😂
It worked 🙌
World Series champions, 2023. It’s funny I predicted that!😂😂😂
SportsStorm coming into this season you were the only baseball creator who correctly broke down what the Rangers strategy was. I look forward to seeing your follow up video.
October 24th, 2023: deGrom was forced to get a second tommy john surgery in late April. Rangers just clinched their 3rd AL championship against the Astros without him. He's been with the team on the sidelines for every game this year.
November 1st, 2023: The Rangers just clinched their first ever World Series title. The risky team worked.
Can't wait for the follow-up video
As a Rangers fan, it is just great to see the owners spending money and being ambitious again. There is reason to be proud of the organization and the future.
That’s two off-seasons in a row that they added significant talent. No reason to think they are going to stop anytime soon. I think they will be significantly better this year and there’s no reason to think they won’t be even better next year after another great off-season. It takes a while to build a winner.
@@enjoyer6201 Or just overspending on players in FA. They aren't really building or developing anything
It’s one thing to spend money on talent it’s another to spend on talent that cannot seem to stay healthy.
@@jpauljorgensen1349 Wrong !! The young players the Rangers have drafted recently sucked especially the pitchers. Nothing to develop only more losing seasons
they’ve looked nice so far, Degrom bounced back today and the offense has been on fire to start the season
As a Rangers fan, I haven’t been this stoked for a season since the 2010’s
as an angels fan i can say the same out division looks like it can go either way other than the A’s lol
Yeah, I’m an Astros fan, but after way too long at the top I’m genuinely excited for the future of the AL West, and specifically hope the Mariners and Rangers can finally go all the way after decades of suffering.
Still stoked?🫣
As a loyal fan me to it’s been so depressing
@@EChino92this aged *HORRIBLY*
Rangers are such a weird franchise right now, like I can’t fully trust them to be contenders even with all their talent, a lot of upside but not much to show for it
It’s gonna be a fun year
At least they should be more watchable than last year
Season hasn’t even started yet. And if you’re referring to last year their free agents did well enough, with Lowe and Martin being a nice surprise. Their pitching was going to be bad last year as expected.
This isn’t going to age well.. two games in 27 runs scored in first two games lol
I hope this ages horribly. Rangers just swept the NL champs
The way this aged... masterful
I’ve been a Cubs fan since 1967, but I live in Dallas and root for the Rangers, too. I hope their plan works. I love going to the games in Arlington.
Came back to this video after the rangers just beat the Astros in 7 to make the World Series (:
you know why im here
Seems to be working out so far. Can't even imagine how good this team could be if Young, Leiter, and Rocker all hit their potential. Future is bright in Texas. As a Yankee's fan, it has been a delight watching this team. Just wish deGrom could stay healthy (though definitely improved Cole's Cy odds which is probably our best chance of winning anything this year).
I have a buddy in Texas, absolute DIEHARD Rangers fan. For his sake, I want them to succeed, but I just don't know if they have the weapons. Regardless, thanks Sportstorm!
I hope it goes well for them too. I have to support former Padre Chris Young
@@SportStorm23 For sure buddy!
It wont work, degrom will get hurt and even if he doesnt they still dont have that good of a team, maybe next year
@@bezllama3325 you must be a Mets fan, you’re probably just mad that verlander and Diaz are on the IL when degrom isn’t
@@bezllama3325 it’s all about building no one thinks they will win this year 😂 you slow
I'm glad DeGrom came to the Rangers because I've always wanted to see Trout Ohtani and DeGrom face off someday. Ohtani might experience deGrom's pitches as a hitter and make use of them as a pitcher.
Absolutely, the AL West in general is stacked
Looking forward to the follow up video to this one.
I should've checked the recent comments, lol
It worked. Go Rangers!
This video aged well, the plan worked!!
Yesss, I love the Ragans shoutout. Big fan of his and wrote him up a couple times last yr. So happy to see his velo back and he could be a key piece for them, either as a multi-inning RP or sliding into the rotation to cover an injury
Very great video. Rangers are off to a good start just hope they can stay consistent!
Ay man I love the channel been here from the start, you need wayyyyy more attention, great video and content. Keep it up!
I don’t know quite why, but I get the feeling that this experiment is going to work and the Rangers are going to win the 2023 World Series.🎉🎉🎉🎉😂😂😂
Hey, i come from the future to say “IT FUCKING DID” LFG!!!
The removal of the shift has made Seager lead the league in doubles and he has an OPS of 1.013 and OPS+ of 170….
I don't think enough people have given credit to how big of a shift going from Woodward and Beasley as managers to Bruce Bochy really can be for this team. With their absurd 1 run game records and large amount of blown saves, having a legendary manager who forged their dynasty off of great pitching could be what this team really needs.
Interesting to note that a lot of fringe players on this team have incredible potential to be big contributors next year
Robbie Grossman is a monster against left handed pitching but was hurt heavily by the shift against righties. Plus the Rangers have had a major hole in left field for years now, where he'd be able to fill with a consistent bat and proven defense in left.
Bubba Thompson has the potential to lead the league in steals by a great margin.
Jon Gray looked incredible last year whenever he wasn't dealing with blisters.
Not only is Jonah Heim a solid switch hitting catcher, he is also a top 5 defensive catcher.
Even if the rotation gets injured, the Rangers still have a lot of guys in their bullpen that are able to eat innings in the back of the rotation like Ragans, Hearn, Dunning, and Otto.
This team is much more of a contender than people give them credit for, and I truly believe they're the biggest dark horse in baseball right now. If things go perfectly, they can be one of the best teams in baseball, but even if things don't go perfectly, they still have plenty of room to make a run for a good while.
You were right
You typed all of that for a team that won’t sniff October.
@@EChino92 worry about getting a winning record before you talk
Texas Rangers World Series champions 2023.
HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH@@EChino92
Absolutely great and in depth video, thank you
As a Astros fan in a family whos split between the rangers and astros, the rangers have a good shot for playoffs this year. if they make it good for them, but they still gotta duel it out with houston before September ends
no problem
Risky but smart in my opinion especially on the pitching side. Degrom healthy, he is the best in the game.
They give their top pitching prospects, another full year in the minors, another full year to develope, sure it cost them money this year, but in the long run, if they can stay healthy, and fulfill their potential as highly touted pitching prospects, the rangers should be even better come 2024 on the pitching side, hopefully the money is well spent this year on that pitching with all those starters they signed.
Great analysis. Always enjoy your content!
Rangers bought 3/5 of a rotation, all of whom have a history of being injured.
Good job Rangers, you primed the pump 2 years too early with injury prone players (don't forget about Segar).
4th place, and out of the playoff race by early September
We'll see
This aged poorly.
@@yofuryxexpo No argument here. They ran into teams that just fell on their own face and all the Rangers had to do was step over them, but in the end they're the 2023 Champions, and that's all that matters.
Congratulations to the Rangers for their first World Series victory! It's gotta feel good!
aged like milk. id never give my dumbass opinion again after this if i was you.
4th place and out of the race LOL how did ur team do buddy? bet they didnt do better than mine
@@Beamin439 Everyone that wasn't a Rangers fan had them behind at least the Astros and the Mariners. You can be the keyboard warrior after the fact all you want but at least I made my stance known early. The fact is that they barely made the playoffs, and then ran into teams that fell on their own face and all the Rangers had to do was step around them. They're the weakest looking Champions I can ever recall seeing, but in the end they got the job done, and that's all that matters.
Congratulations to the Rangers on their first World Series victory! I bet it feels good!
Rangers are in a weird position rn. If all goes right realistically they’ll just be fighting for second place. I don’t see anyone touching the Astros in that division. But I do like how aggressive they’re being and that they have an actual plan. We’ll just have to see if the Mariners can continue their run and if the Angels can actually put it together this year which would make the West a lot more interesting
Agreed 100%. Astros own the #1 spot. But as an angels fan that number 2 spot is gonna be fought tooth and nail this season. I’m actually excited about it. I think if the A’s had an owner who wanted to win the AL west would be the most competitive division in the league. Good luck to the rangers tho 👍
🎉
Not only did they make the playoffs, we are World Champions now!!!
Crazy to watch after into the season
Evaldi was an absolute steal. Yes, he's incomsitant and oft injured, but he always earns his money in october...
2023 World Series Champions!!!
And now the future’s so bright we’ll have to wear shades 😎
Well so much for long-term huh we're already in the World Series and up one game to nothing against the Diamondbacks right now
Watching Jon Daniels get fired and watching the new GM start writing checks was great
Is part 2 still coming? As a rangers fan, I would love to see it!! What a season it was for us, just incredible
Just wanna say great video you explained the Rangers quite well
It worked.
Halos, Mariners and Rangers are gonna be neck and neck all year for 2nd place, barring major injuries
What has me more optimistic is not only has Chris Young been promoted to the role Jon Daniels had and brings in a different philosophy it feels like, but the coaches that were brought in. I've heard many times from former big leaguers how coaching was essential to gaining and maintaining their success. And I think bringing in Bochy was a great move but also bringing back Maddox as our pitching coach again will prove to be the most important and underated move for our pitchers. As a Rangers fan, after Maddox left, I don't remember our pitchers being any effective unless the players themselves had pure talent already. So I'm excited to see our pitching staff have some proper pitching development once again.
I think the Nationals showed the proper method for a team “rebuilding” develop your offense internally and buy pitching.
I’d say a solid 81-81-83-78 esque season. The addition of Bochy is massive. I think next year they win 95 games. They need Nate Lowe to transpire into what he can be. As well as adolis, and leclerc and burke need to continue pitching well
Well the way they are playing right now, id say 90-93 wins is a decent possibility
id say a world series is a decent possibility@@strattonsneedon5978
The issue is Jacob throws too hard…his ability comes from freezing batters who don’t know if his slider is coming or his four seamer. Dialing back the latter to 96-98 will enhance his durability and has proven to not hurt his ability to strike batters out.
Thanks for making this video. As a Rangers fan, I'm just happy that we are at least attempting to be more competitive. I like the pieces that we have acquired, and also feel really excited about the development of guys like Jung and Leiter. Obviously this rebuilding plan has plenty of potential to fail, but I'd rather swing and miss than not swing at all and be content as a cellar dweller
Smart video title.. definitely made me want to watch
Great video!
You were spot on with Cole Ragans.
as a rangers fan im excited we haven't been good in so long

what you said about the rangers becoming the new angels is what i was afraid of more than anything, but i guess there is always risk in whatever move you make in baseball. you really do have to just get lucky sometimes. so far they look pretty good this year though, gotta say they have the most complete lineup 1-9. and yeah seager was a huge victim to the shift, glad to see the new rules are helping him this year.
Great video. Never would've guessed you only have 54k subs. Keep up the great work!
Thank you!
The Rangers are hoping that all the money they are shelling out will pay out in the future. I doubt that will happen.
Just wanted to revisit this
Jacob degrom has the best stuff Major League Baseball has ever seen however when he gets the ball up he is hittable he also doesn't pitch to contact enough and that has correlated into injuries I believe he has the stuff to be an elite top-shelf closer in the mold of John Smoltz. Eventually I think that's where he goes

So far its working
if you’re looking for a barrel of laughs check out semien’s turf vs grass splits in the first half of 2022. truly bizarre, even if he seemed to reign in the anomaly somewhat towards the fall.
That projection chart is wacky!! It undershot the Astros and Mariners win by probably 10 each
and it did lmoa
Wow very impressed with his research and how he presents it...been a Rangers fan for all my life God Please this year...just one just one...😅😅😅
Can confirm, it worked
The rangers are me in every franchise mode I do, there playing the show irl and it’s working
Love degrom, when hes healthy hes the best pitcher not the best baseball player. You cannot take that away from ohtani LOL
You should make an update video since we have the #3 record in the AL rn lol
let’s not forget to mention that there are many more fans at the stadium now so they will also be making more money, not sure how it will be with them spending more money, are they making more money in the long run? i have no clue, but the stadium is definitely WAY more full
12-6 tonight, most likely going to 13.....
89-92 wins is my prediction. Just a feeling
This aged like fine wine.
I’ll take my chances!!
Jacob DeGrom has one of his worst starts in a while, and yet the Rangers went and won anyway with 11 runs. It's going to be a weird season in Texas this year
I'm just glad that baseball could be meaningful again here in DFW. I've been so sick and tired of the Cowboys being the only thing that sports commentators talk about. The Stars playing well into the playoffs is another good thing.
love the opening series in WHAT SHOULD’VE BEEN the 2011 World Series Matchup, but thanks baseball gods for fucking that up. Anyways, I really do not think this Rangers experiment will work. They have been so horrible for so long so I get what they are trying to do but the players they chose to invest in are so high risk that I just don’t trust a Degrom and a Semien both on the wrong side of 30 and an injury prone corey seager to lead this team anywhere. this roster also has almost no depth whatsoever.
While way early, 13-7 is looking like a great start. The teams is winning while Seager is out with a hamstring injury also.
I need this to work.
If Texas still had an outside stadium, no way we pull in these players. I remember back in the 2010's, players wanted to play in Texas but not outside because it's really fucking hot.
Mark Cuban, TAKE NOTES!
I just became a Rangers fan in the past few years but i’m as die hard as they come. I love everything about the team and ill support them whether its 110-52 or 52-110🙌🏻
"The Rangers just need some luck on their side"..... I love DeGrom, but he is literally the unluckiest MLB pitcher in the past decade 😅
Great fuckin video man well done
Can you please do a video on whether or not Catfish Hunter should be in the hall of fame?
In the first 3 games the rangers have score 29 runs and swept the Phillies. Not a bad start
As a Mets fan I never like deform because he’s always on the DL
high risk high reward
We watched the Angels try building successful teams this way for years and it didn't work. They gave out huge deals to guys like Josh Hamilton, Albert Pujols, Justin Upton, CJ Wilson, and now Anthony Rendon. Big names, BIG money, small results. Teams that try to build a World Series contender through free agency alone are usually looking for a new GM and manager within 2-3 years
Side note: Imagine if the rotation the Mets had envisioned worked out. When they were going through their rebuild, the starting rotation they had planned would have been DOMINANT:
1- Matt Harvey
2- Jacob DeGrom
3- Noah Syndergaard
4- Zach Wheeler
5- Steven Matz
If Harvey didn't completely forget how to pitch and they all stayed healthy, the rotation alone would have had them contending year after year
One month later... the Rangers are 8 games over 500 and in first by 3 games after winning 2 out of 3 in Anaheim.
They've already tied 2 records and are 3-0. The risk was worth it
Signing mediocre starting pitching isn’t getting the rangers anywhere. DeGrom, Perez, Eovaldi, Gray, Heaney is very meh imo
I also feel like they’re similar to the Angels
Who’s here after they sweped the Phillies to start the season
As a rangers fan, I'm just glad they're doing something
seager hasnt show up yet so who knows when all cylinders start firing
correct me if i'm wrong but isn't "positive regression" just "progression"? lol it was a phrase i heard a few times in the video.
I think "progression" indicates direct improvement, where positive regression specifically points at someone or some team that was underperforming based on metrics, thus a regression to the mean in a progressive fashion
The term regression does not necessarily mean trending down, it just means returning to the mean (average results) from outlier results. A guy that puts up 4 WAR every season, has a 2 WAR season and goes back to putting up 4 WAR seasons is experiencing positive regression. If a player goes from 2 WAR to 3 WAR to 4 WAR, that would be more in line with progression.
I think it worked.
“…positive regression…” 😂
Just a summary. It worked
It would be an interesting season for the Rangers for sure.
Until they meet the Astros.
HAHAHAHAHHA what was that? you say something about the asstros? HAHAHHAHAHA@@joe3009
