The Rangers Are Building a Risky Team (And It Might Work)

  • Hey everyone!
    We are finally at the cusp of a new season. Every team has their own goals and ambitions. One team that's looking to take that next step this season is the Texas Rangers. In the past 2 seasons, they've spent more on free agents than any other team. Last year, they finished well under .500, but they seem to have a clear long term plan. The question is, will it work?

  • @YouGotDoinked
    @YouGotDoinked Год назад +21

    I don't think enough people have given credit to how big of a shift going from Woodward and Beasley as managers to Bruce Bochy really can be for this team. With their absurd 1 run game records and large amount of blown saves, having a legendary manager who forged their dynasty off of great pitching could be what this team really needs.
    Interesting to note that a lot of fringe players on this team have incredible potential to be big contributors next year
    Robbie Grossman is a monster against left handed pitching but was hurt heavily by the shift against righties. Plus the Rangers have had a major hole in left field for years now, where he'd be able to fill with a consistent bat and proven defense in left.
    Bubba Thompson has the potential to lead the league in steals by a great margin.
    Jon Gray looked incredible last year whenever he wasn't dealing with blisters.
    Not only is Jonah Heim a solid switch hitting catcher, he is also a top 5 defensive catcher.
    Even if the rotation gets injured, the Rangers still have a lot of guys in their bullpen that are able to eat innings in the back of the rotation like Ragans, Hearn, Dunning, and Otto.
    This team is much more of a contender than people give them credit for, and I truly believe they're the biggest dark horse in baseball right now. If things go perfectly, they can be one of the best teams in baseball, but even if things don't go perfectly, they still have plenty of room to make a run for a good while.

    They give their top pitching prospects, another full year in the minors, another full year to develope, sure it cost them money this year, but in the long run, if they can stay healthy, and fulfill their potential as highly touted pitching prospects, the rangers should be even better come 2024 on the pitching side, hopefully the money is well spent this year on that pitching with all those starters they signed.

    What has me more optimistic is not only has Chris Young been promoted to the role Jon Daniels had and brings in a different philosophy it feels like, but the coaches that were brought in. I've heard many times from former big leaguers how coaching was essential to gaining and maintaining their success. And I think bringing in Bochy was a great move but also bringing back Maddox as our pitching coach again will prove to be the most important and underated move for our pitchers. As a Rangers fan, after Maddox left, I don't remember our pitchers being any effective unless the players themselves had pure talent already. So I'm excited to see our pitching staff have some proper pitching development once again.

    let’s not forget to mention that there are many more fans at the stadium now so they will also be making more money, not sure how it will be with them spending more money, are they making more money in the long run? i have no clue, but the stadium is definitely WAY more full

    Jacob DeGrom has one of his worst starts in a while, and yet the Rangers went and won anyway with 11 runs. It's going to be a weird season in Texas this year

    I'm just glad that baseball could be meaningful again here in DFW. I've been so sick and tired of the Cowboys being the only thing that sports commentators talk about. The Stars playing well into the playoffs is another good thing.

    love the opening series in WHAT SHOULD’VE BEEN the 2011 World Series Matchup, but thanks baseball gods for fucking that up. Anyways, I really do not think this Rangers experiment will work. They have been so horrible for so long so I get what they are trying to do but the players they chose to invest in are so high risk that I just don’t trust a Degrom and a Semien both on the wrong side of 30 and an injury prone corey seager to lead this team anywhere. this roster also has almost no depth whatsoever.

  • @RyanPoehls

    While way early, 13-7 is looking like a great start. The teams is winning while Seager is out with a hamstring injury also.

    If Texas still had an outside stadium, no way we pull in these players. I remember back in the 2010's, players wanted to play in Texas but not outside because it's really fucking hot.

    We watched the Angels try building successful teams this way for years and it didn't work. They gave out huge deals to guys like Josh Hamilton, Albert Pujols, Justin Upton, CJ Wilson, and now Anthony Rendon. Big names, BIG money, small results. Teams that try to build a World Series contender through free agency alone are usually looking for a new GM and manager within 2-3 years
    Side note: Imagine if the rotation the Mets had envisioned worked out. When they were going through their rebuild, the starting rotation they had planned would have been DOMINANT:
    1- Matt Harvey
    2- Jacob DeGrom
    3- Noah Syndergaard
    4- Zach Wheeler
    5- Steven Matz
    If Harvey didn't completely forget how to pitch and they all stayed healthy, the rotation alone would have had them contending year after year

    correct me if i'm wrong but isn't "positive regression" just "progression"? lol it was a phrase i heard a few times in the video.

    • @brakel3ss
      @brakel3ss Год назад

      I think "progression" indicates direct improvement, where positive regression specifically points at someone or some team that was underperforming based on metrics, thus a regression to the mean in a progressive fashion

    • @doublersports2866
      @doublersports2866 Год назад +2

      The term regression does not necessarily mean trending down, it just means returning to the mean (average results) from outlier results. A guy that puts up 4 WAR every season, has a 2 WAR season and goes back to putting up 4 WAR seasons is experiencing positive regression. If a player goes from 2 WAR to 3 WAR to 4 WAR, that would be more in line with progression.
