RangersU - History of the Texas Rangers

  • In honor of the Texas Rangers’ appearance in the World Series, ACU is sharing this brief history of the organization with Rangers fans everywhere. This engaging 20-minute video, led by John Blake, executive vice president of public affairs for the Rangers, is part of the Baseball History and Culture course ACU developed for the Rangers earlier this year. Blake has spent a career in major league baseball and was recently inducted in Rangers Hall of Fame.
In 2022, ACU launched an educational partnership with the Texas Rangers called RangersU powered by ACU, which offers online academic courses for players, coaches and staff interested in enhancing their leadership development, professional skills and knowledge of all things baseball. In the summer of 2023, RangersU extended its reach by offering academic content from these player pathways to the general public through RangersU Public Courses.

My grandfather had waited all of his life to have a pro baseball team in the Dallas area, and took me to a Rangers game in 1974. I was 6. Got a picture of myself sitting on Toby Harrah's knee and got my cap signed by a young Jim Sundberg. My grandfather had TV, but he always listened to the games on the radio instead. I wish he were here to see the Rangers finally win the World Series. 😊

I was born just prior to the start of the Texas Rangers 7th season in Arlington, in March of 1979. And I can vividly remember attending games in the old Arlington Stadium, the first of which would have been the summer of 1988, when I was just 9 years old. I was deployed to the Middle East in 2010 and 2011. Therefore, I missed seeing both of the previous World Series. I am very grateful that I was able to attend a game in September this year, against the Mariners. We Won…2-0! But more importantly for all of us Diehard Rangers fans, I’m thankful that I was able to watch every single inning of this successful World Series run! Thanks for posting…brought back good memories!

Started watching baseball as a 9 year old kid in 1987. Same year I bought my first pack of Topps baseball cards (junk wax era). Had a bunch of Starting Lineup figures, posters etc. Fell in love with the game. Then one night a few years later, the Rangers are in town to play my hometown Tigers, and I'm watching the game on tv when I first seen my favorite player of all time. #7 Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez. I think he's why I always had a little love for the Rangers except when they played the Tigers. I'm so happy for the Rangers and their fans, congratulations. Also thank you for developing Pudge. If it's not for him, I don't get to enjoy all those years of Tigers success, despite not winning a World Series.

Also, I loved the Ballpark in Arlington. A beautiful stadium with so many memories. I miss everything about it other than the heat. My family used to watch the 1st 2 innings from the concourse while we waited for the shadows to shift over and cover our seats near the left field line and third base.

Texas Rangers synonymous w/Offensive Power and No Pitching. We needed a change in the pitching culture, so we brought in Nolan Ryan (Team President) and Mike Maddox (Pitching Coach) to address that area of need. Eventually things changed, and we got to where we wanted (2 WS appearances ‘10 & ‘11) although coming up short both times. Hopefully, we get a chance to rewrite history very soon in ‘23…

Remember the days when your team couldn't give away tickets? The same organization that fired Whitey Herzog & Billy Martin. Y'all didn't give either one of those managers a fair chance. Fired Billy Martin after the Rangers finally had a winning season. If you had given either one of these gentlemen a fair shake the Rangers could have been in the World Series a lot sooner. In case you don't remember Whitey & Billy faced each other in the 1976 & 77 ALCS's. I wonder how Rangers management felt at that time.

My family was from Arlington and one of my great-grandfathers worked for or with Tommy Vandergriff’s father Hooker Vandergriff. Tommy single-handedly got the Senators to move to Arlington. I used to hit up those games in the 90s and it was hotter than a mother out there. Especially being along the 3rd base - left field side. Founded by Luis "Cowboy Jesus" Gonzalez in 1879 The Texas Twistersox were formally induced into professional play after 5 years of playing in the Spitoon League of former Civil War soldiers. After the old city of Creekbed was wiped from the map in the Great Texas City Twister of 1909, the team would be hastily renamed the Texas Rangers and moved to the fledgling rail town of "Arlingtonville", today known as the home of both the Rangers and Dallas Cowboys in 7 years. In 1915 the entire Texas Rangers squad was killed at the Somme, forcing the local women to pick up bats. The Rangers won the 1915 World Series against the Brooklyn Robins after 7 straight 1 run games, the highest recorded total score for any team in the World Series at the time; a record broken by a 4 run 2nd inning in 1922. In 1927, the Rangers' President Robert R. Roberts, and entire pitching and batting rotation was arrested for running an illegal hooch operation during prohibition which forced Arlingtonville to hire the entire 1926 World Series Champion St. Louis Cardinals roster to fill things out. They would subsequently win 867 out of 162 games that year, which would be their best overall record until 1940. After winning the 1944 World Series by having the opposing team poisoned, the entire team was killed on D-Day. The beleaguered Rangers again hired the 1926 World Series Champion St. Louis Cardinals roster, losing all 6 scheduled games that year. After a cheating scandal rocked Arlington in 1969, the league outlawed Pitcher Assassination through dugout sniper. Indeed, by 1970 no team was allowed to have any firearm on MLB sanctioned grounds. Sadly, The Rangers got away with 7 consecutive seasons of cheating, accounting for 5 of their 57 World Series titles during those years. From 1980 to 1990 Texas went through the longest win draught in recorded baseball history, only making the 1991 World Series on accident when a MLB computer replaced TOR with TEX. After defeating Montreal in 3 games, the Rangers would have unprecedented success until the entire team was killed on 9/11. Unfortunately, my "Complete History of the Texas Rangers" was printed in 2002 so, that's as far as I can take you.
