I Bought My 1st Tractor!!

  • Planting corn and soybeans in a timely manner is one of the biggest variables in harvesting a high yielding crop. This past spring, we had a wet spring that caused us to plant half of our corn acres and all of our bean acres late. This late planting caused a massive yield loss. Due to seeing these differences, we were highly motivated to purchase a bigger planting for planting season 2020. The only issue with us buying a bigger planting is that we did not have a tractor big enough to pull a 24 row planter. Now we were on a mission to buy a 24 row planter and a bigger MFWD tractor.
Right away we jumped on an auction that had a 24 row planter and a 340 horsepower MFWD tractor. Once we got to the auction we were disappointed in the overall condition of the equipment. Dad and I go over a few things we looked at on the planter and tractor to determine we were not interested. Once we left the auction, we headed three hours away to purchase a 24 row planter we looked at a few days prior.
A few days later we had another auction come up that had a very clean 2014 Case IH Magnum 340 with 1,000 hours on it. I did not film the auction due to it being so cold, but I did film the tractor once we got it home. After giving a quick run down on it, Dad and I washed the 1991 Case IH 7140, the new Magnum 340, and the 2005 Bobcat T-190. After getting things all settled in the shop, I give a quick tour of the new tractor.
    Thank you for watching!

How you guys make sure that every little detail is taken care of. On every piece of equipment you have. This tractor is huge but beautiful. I respect how you take care of things. Keeping everything in top notch order especially after harvest. All equipment is washed, filters changed, everything greased and sometimes even polished!!!!. Your continuous care for your equipment keeps them running for years and years. My parents taught us that you keep care of what you have and you'll have it a long time. Pretty much how you have taught Summer, Cole and Cooper. Great job Daddy Cornstar!!! 💯😃👍🙏

Cole, it costs money to make money. Investing in your farm when a deal comes along will show profits fast. If you're able to yield 40-50 bu per acre more by early planting and harvesting, it's a win-win.
While you've got the new Case IH 340 in the shop, rotate the tires. Normalize the tire wear. Since you estimate putting 300-350 hours a year on the tractor, purchase DEF by the case instead of the IBC tote. DEF goes bad, usually a 18 month shelf life.

Just found and started watching your channel this week. Love your attitude towards farming. I will say I've gotten to see the first hand problems of DEF. It is very nice to see you have put enough thought into what you wanted before you bought it to at least be able to come to a decision about whether or not it would be more beneficial to keep or delete the DEF system. You are absolutely correct. Most places are not willing to work on something that has any emissions system deleted as it could potentially come back to them since they are a certified service center.

    Yuuuup! That's a sweet tractor!
Daddy corn star, true story. So my Dad was real sick he needed a double lung transplant, he lived really far from the hospital where he would have the transplant, I lived about 30 mins from it, so he came to live with me while he was on the waiting list. I helped him with all his personal care, the first month he was with me I was shaving him and I said " Dad I'm just gonna clean up your eye brows too, ok? " he says " yup, if you reckon then need it", I said, "oh yeah...It's needed." So we get to talkin then all of a sudden I said " ought. Oh" .Dad says " well know, I reckon that's not a good "ought oh, now is it?" ...I said, "well, that all depends on how you look at it" ...He says , " well hand me that mirror, might as well see what we're dealin with "...so, I hand him a mirror. He looks everything all over and says " well...ya can't leave it like that, you best make the other one match"...I said " Dad! I'm NOT shaving half the other eyebrow off also! "...He said, " oh yes you are, now you created this mess, you're gonna fix it! Get ta shavin"...so I did. My very frail and very sick Dad looked mighty shocked, or in a perpetual state of "awe" with both eyebrows clean shaven off right to the mid point!. Every day I had to take him to his physio at the hospital, the first day he went with the new eye brows. , he was just chompin at the bit when I came to pick him up. I get his gear ready and I'm wheelin him down the hall and he starts telling me about what happened at " exercise class" ...He says " as soon as the nurses saw my new eyebrows they all came right over to ask me who did them ( I'm thinking oh Lord), then he says " yup...I was the talk of the group today.". We get all piled into the car, wheel chair, oxygen tank, Walker and backpack stowed away, we pull out of the hospital parking lot and he looks at me and says " you suppose there's anything else you can shave off tonight before we go to exercise class again?". I just about died. I responded emphatically " no"...I will not be shaving all your eye brows, or your head, or your arms or anything else off so that you can be the talk of the class!" ...we had a long 6 mo nth wait, and after his transplant we had some hard times also, but I'll tell ya, that eyebrow story made us both crack up, every single time.
Sorry for the long story, but when you talked about the shaven eye brow, I knew I had to share our story :)

Hey Cole you are really a smart guy to be so young. I love how you have the patience to look for problems that you don't want to deal with instead of looking at the things you love about it. Finding things that you love can overcome the bad things and get you in a lot of trouble. Hey..... Daddy Cornstar you have done a great job on rasing some smart boys and girl of course, she is a cut above but boys are usually not as easy to raise. You and Mama Cornstar did a fantastic job...........

Good to see you all take pride in your equipment/investment. We bought several peaces of equipment and tractors at action. One tractor had an injection pump go bad shortly after we brought it home. But we had payed a really low price for it so it wasn't too bad. Congrats CornStar family! Looking forward to seeing it in the Field in the spring!

So true! It's rare to hear a young farmer who speaks with so much experience. I especially enjoyed the presentation in which he explained the massive equity losses farmers have been suffering the past several consecutive years. I farm in SD, west of the border with Iowa, and am a first generation farmer. My area is in the third consecutive year of excessive rainfall that has been resulting in many fields not being planted, with the fields that were planted often not planted until late June. What Cole said about the benefits of early planting are spot on accurate. Real world economic conditions in farming do not allow non-multi-generation farmers the luxury of experimenting with latest-technology farm machinery. So it's a real treat to hear this young farmer lay it on the line.

I love those 340s! I've been all over those tractors from splitting them to simple stuff. One thing I will say is as soon as you're in it, run it! those tractors are built to get into and be put to work and I've seen problems arise if they sit idle for too long and don't get up to temp in the mornings for the DEF. Lots of reliable power! I work on Red, Green, Blue. Yellow and everything in between but nothing comes close to working on case! And as far as ride quality I can't agree more the cab suspension is nice and simple but effective. The front axle leveling is nice also.
