I still insist that of all the greatest singers I've ever heard, Eddie Levert maintained the most powerful, controled, melodic, gut wrenching, and soul stirring voices I've ever heard. I know, what about Teddy, Peabo, Ruffin, Luther, etc.? I just don't feel Eddie got his props, the masculinity of the Ojays and the power of his voice intimidated some folks, but I just have to tell the truth. You win in my book Eddie, props to Philly International as well!
Happy Birthday to Eddie Levert, longtime member and co-lead singer of the legendary O'Jays, born June 16th, 1942. On June 16, 2024 he celebrated his 82nd birthday. By any measure, the O'Jays are one of the most important Soul Music groups of all-time. Whether delivering funky dance music, romantic ballads, or thoughtful social commentary in song
Oops my reply got messed up (AND sent itself b4 I was done !!)Just MEANT to say,i think.I'm still om the time machine. ; I don't believe I ever got off it nor had any REASON need or desire to.,! From the first great summer I started loving this music in 73 age 9, I hopped aboard the Love Train + stayed !!
What must be remembered here ... This is another one where the vocals were live. If you listen to the recorded version, the verses were reversed ... And it is still fire. If you look at the crowd, half of them aren't dancing ... They are watching. Even they realize that this right here ... It's a moment. For real. 💗💗💯💯💯
Ojay's refused to be on Soul Train unless they could sing live!! No lip syncing here....Eddie said "Man ...I dont have to lip sync.... "I got something " !!!!

What I love after 50+years as a group Eddie and Walter had a perfect blend in being lead singer. Eddie has that raw, rich go hard sexy approach and Walter has that smooth, charming, sexy swag. Both are charismatic and dynamic performance. RIP to William who was a phenomenal dancer and background singer. He held his own. I’m sure his lost to the O’Jays was unimaginable.
This is kind of unrelated but I heard that McFadden and Whitehead wrote the song Backstabbers. Eddie hated the song because he wanted to do more love ballads. I guess this is proof lol

Boy oh boy! The sweetest one two punch in the history of R&B Soul was Eddie and Walter on wax and live! Their voices were so good together with the production of Gamble and Huff! The only other one two punches that could rival them were David Ruffin and Eddie Kendricks and K-Ci and Jo Jo from Jodeci! Simply spectacular 💯🙌🏾
Thank you Kenny Gamble & Leon Huff for writing and producing some of the greatest soul music in the history of music! I’m 52 years old and although it’s my parents music it was the blueprint of my childhood! From illly Philly to New York City.. PIR was in the house! 💯🎶❤️👊🏽🔥👏
I remember seeing the O'Jays sing the song, Just let make love to you. I went out of my mind !! And been in love with O'Jays ever since!! Thank you O'Jays, my first loves of music, I was in my late twentys' and early thirtys'. Loved them then and still do. Watch them grow old together, look good in your mature years, always, O'Jays!

Have mercy! One of the sexiest songs ever. I’ve seen a gazillion ST episodes from the very beginning but don’t recall any other performers not lip syncing besides these uber talented men. Anyone else?
One of my favorites!!! Eddie Levert is a beast one of best in the music industry. His voice is still strong some of the best concerts I've ever seen like non other.❤
I was born 1991 but this music is everything to me I feel like i had a past life in this era of music which is why i feel i don't fit in with my generation most of the time. I feel so comfortable being by myself & still getting things done. Also my mom who adopted me was born in the year 1944 she put me on to a lot of beautiful music.

I agree, Eddie's soul, was in that soul music!
No flashing lights. No hype men. No gyrating women. Just three smooth gentlemen with mics who could sing!

Back when Grown Men made Grown Men Music! Peace!
Folks, this is a live performance that sounds better than the recording. There is only one group that could do this, The Ojay’s.
